Will the Commanders make a completely unexpected pick at No. 7 tomorrow night?
Transcript
00:00Our draft night party is tomorrow night at Honor Brewing in Loudoun.
00:05Come hang out.
00:05Listen to the Junkies from 6.30 to 8 p.m.
00:09Followed by Grant and Danny from 8 to 11 p.m.
00:11Honor Brewing is located at 42.604 Trade West Drive in Sterling.
00:18We'll be broadcasting live 6.30 to 8.
00:23Grant and Danny take over.
00:27I don't know if I'm going to hang all the way until the commander's pick.
00:31That'll probably be around 9 o'clock.
00:35I'm going to guess a bit later than that because the start time of the draft is 8.
00:40You know the first pick.
00:41That doesn't start right.
00:41They're not going to get on the clock until 8.30.
00:438.15.
00:44Is everybody going to use their 8 minutes?
00:46I think most teams tend to use the media anyway.
00:49They draw it out.
00:50Whatever time they have.
00:51It's not going to be like a 2-minuter.
00:53Yeah, you might be right.
00:53I probably will stay, and then I'm going to bolt right after.
00:57I'm going to put the commanders.
00:57Because it's almost an hour ride back home for me.
00:59The commanders, they'll make their pick, if they stay at 7, at around 9.15, 9.20-ish.
01:06That means I'm in my driveway, 10.10.
01:10Correct.
01:11Yep.
01:11It should be a little sooner than that, Cakes.
01:13If it actually starts.
01:15So, Drav, you said it always starts at 8.
01:17When does the first pick start, typically?
01:21Like, 8.10?
01:22I'm going to guess 8.15, 8.20.
01:24Goodell comes out and talks, and then he says, the Raiders need to be 8 minutes.
01:28No, but they will.
01:29They'll hype it up.
01:31Can they just pick Mendoza in the first minute?
01:34They do.
01:35They'll hype it up.
01:35When's the last time a team that had the number one pick just immediately?
01:39All right.
01:39Over, under, on time of Raiders selecting Mendoza.
01:43Five plus minutes.
01:44I'm going to put 8.21 and 30 seconds.
01:47Oh, you mean the time of day?
01:49Time of the night.
01:50I'll take under.
01:51Are you going later?
01:51I'll take under for a dollar.
01:53All right.
01:53Earlier than 8.21 and 30 seconds.
01:55I just don't know when they're officially going to say they're on the clock.
01:57I'm going to say after 8.21.
02:00Okay.
02:00For a dollar.
02:01Just a dollar.
02:02Put that in the book.
02:03We kind of have to remember what time it is when they select.
02:06Yeah.
02:07Yeah.
02:08But, yeah, I would say that they, let's just say Commanders select around 9 o'clock.
02:12But what's interesting about this draft, and by almost all accounts, is after Mendoza, it's a crapshoot.
02:22I mean, people have an idea of the top six or seven guys.
02:25Just where?
02:26What order?
02:26But, like, how it's going to go?
02:28Or if there is a team that is sort of desperate and wants to trade up, that could obviously be
02:33a big game changer.
02:34But, I mean, you see the mock guys, that they have Reese going to the Jets.
02:39They have Bailey going to the Jets.
02:43Then that changes things.
02:44You see people now, all of a sudden, the hot, sexy thing is the Cardinals taking love, which, you know,
02:50I've been convinced,
02:51but I listen to Logan Paulson and GP, that that's just a smokescreen.
02:54Who knows?
02:56The Giants, you've seen them all over going receiver.
03:00You've seen them going styles.
03:02Styles, they could pick anybody.
03:04They could go Caleb Downs at five.
03:06Well, here's the question that we wanted to throw out now.
03:10We've been talking about these same names over and over, different order.
03:14Is there a wild card pick that Adam Peters might make?
03:19He is notoriously tight-lipped about this.
03:23Right.
03:24Which is a positive.
03:25I think that's a great thing.
03:27He did say some nice things about Sonny Styles, I think, on Ohio State's.
03:31I'm sure he said nice things about everyone.
03:34Last year, he kind of surprised everybody with the Josh Connerly selection.
03:38Nobody really expected them to go Connerly.
03:40That was basically based on need.
03:41Let me give you what I think he could go where it could surprise you.
03:45There's a big clue, again, when they went after Pierce and they went after the other receiver
03:51that they couldn't close.
03:52Romeo Dobbs.
03:53Romeo Dobbs.
03:53Couldn't close it.
03:54So they know they need to upgrade.
03:56And signing De'Ami and Van Jefferson and these other guys, you know, whatever.
04:00They're bottom of the roster guys.
04:01They're not guys that you need at the top.
04:03So they definitely feel like there's still a need.
04:05I think they think they're going to get Ayuk, but it's still a question mark.
04:07So let's assume they go receiver.
04:09Everyone in the world is assuming it's Tate.
04:12You know, if they love, love, love, love, love Tate, they're not going to tell everybody
04:15they love, love, love Tate.
04:16I think the curveball could be they go receiver, but they go Tyson or they even go.
04:21Maybe they maybe what you call says, you know, the guy Lemon is the next Amon Ross,
04:26a brown case keeps saying, well, I was just in Detroit.
04:30David Blau was just in Detroit.
04:31I like that combo.
04:33Give me that kid.
04:34I am kind of, I'm kind of buying into that.
04:36So I could see that be the curveball.
04:38They go receiver.
04:39That would be a big curveball.
04:40But it's not Tate.
04:42Yeah.
04:43It might not be Tate, but if you got even a poor man's version of Amon Ross St.
04:47Brown, if you got Lemon, I mean, Amon Ross had over a hundred catches in each of his
04:52last three seasons.
04:53He had 90 catches as a rookie.
04:55I don't even think that's a curveball though.
04:58Here's my curveball.
04:59I think that's a curveball.
04:59Here's my curveball.
05:00Find me one person that hasn't picked Tyson.
05:03I don't love what they did.
05:05Who?
05:05The commander?
05:06In terms of.
05:07I've got one.
05:08I've got a curveball for you.
05:10Or the Lemon.
05:10Oh, yeah.
05:11It was Lemon.
05:11No.
05:11But I've got one that hasn't picked Tyson.
05:13So in the off season, and I don't love it, but they brought back Deami Brown and they
05:19added Van Jefferson, who's been a solid pro.
05:22I know he's not a great wide receiver, but two seasons ago, you had Terry, you had Deami
05:29Brown, you had Zaccheaus, you had McCaffrey, and you had this prolific offense, right?
05:36They essentially have that same receiving core minus Zaccheaus, throw in Jefferson, throw
05:42in Jalen Lane.
05:44I mean, the curveball would be, they don't go wide receiver, they go tight end and take
05:49Kenyon Sadiq.
05:52Completely would shock everybody.
05:54Now, he's, in most mock drafts, much lower.
05:57But they go, and people go, oh, well, they brought in a receiver.
06:00I mean, they brought in a tight end in free agency, too.
06:03But they draft the tight end, and now you have two, and Cakes loves receiving tight
06:10ends, who are studs.
06:11I do love them.
06:12Four Jaden Daniels.
06:15And, you know, we saw what they did with the running backs.
06:18They've added Rashad White, you can throw two out of the backfield.
06:22They've upgraded there.
06:23So they decide, all right, we don't need necessarily a top flight receiver in the draft
06:28or a top flight running back in the draft.
06:30Let's go tight end.
06:32This is a tight end to compliment who you brought in.
06:36That is a true curveball.
06:38Oh, yeah, I would agree.
06:38Certainly.
06:39That's an out-of-the-box pick.
06:40I don't think that's going to happen.
06:41That's a curveball's not going to happen.
06:41Yes, that's a big-time curveball.
06:43I'm willing to bet that.
06:44But that's a curveball that's landing about 10 feet in front of the plate, so you can't
06:48swing at that.
06:49So I would say, even though that's not a real curveball name, because he's considered
06:58one of the top 15 prospects, but no one is really talking about him coming here, I think
07:03Reuben Bain might be a little bit of a curveball.
07:07Because when we're talking about edge guys or defensive front seven guys, we're not really
07:12talking about Bain.
07:13But that's like the curveball that I threw when I was in high school.
07:16It was like a four-inch breaker.
07:17It barely would curve.
07:19Your curveball's crazy.
07:20He's not going to have it.
07:20Reuben Bain could happen.
07:21But Reuben Bain is not really in most, at this point, in nobody's top seven.
07:25He's usually right after.
07:26Right, that's what I'm saying.
07:28He's been knocked down a bit.
07:29I think it would be kind of a surprise if they passed on certain guys, you know, the
07:33Sonny Stiles of the world, and they went Reuben Bain.
07:36I think that would be a slight curveball.
07:39My curveball is that they pick Lemon, but it's not going to be at seven.
07:42Because they feel like they can move back.
07:44And I think a perfect spot would be the Rams, who are sitting at 13.
07:48Maybe they want to move up.
07:49But they have two first-round picks.
07:51Why would they want to move up?
07:52But another spot might be the Jets at 16.
07:55But that might be a little out of the range where you comfortably think you could still
08:00have him around on the draft board.
08:02You know, my other curveball, and it wouldn't be if they stay at seven, but if they trade
08:07down, I mean, they targeted Tyler Linderbaum for a reason.
08:13They got rid of Biotic for a reason.
08:16And it wasn't just Nick Allegretti.
08:18He's a backup plan because they clearly wanted Linderbaum.
08:22I'm not saying you'd definitely draft a center, but maybe there's a guy who they like at guard
08:27slash center who they would draft later in the first round.
08:33No.
08:34No.
08:35Do you trade down and take a guard?
08:37Yeah.
08:38With our first pick?
08:39I mean, right now I'm looking at a mock draft.
08:40This is Kuyper's mock draft where he has the guard from Penn State, number 21.
08:48Well, I mean, do they need a guard?
08:51No, but they need a center.
08:53You would think that you're going to take a center in the first round.
08:56No, they'll take a center later.
08:58Well, they're willing to entertain Linderbaum for $24 million or whatever.
09:03Well, he's regarded as the best center in the game.
09:04Yeah.
09:05I don't know if they're willing to risk a first round pick on a center.
09:08These are the players that are not a curveball at all.
09:11Could happen.
09:12Bailey, Reese, Stiles, Love, I would be surprised if he dropped that far.
09:17Love, Tate, Tyson, I guess Delane, and Downs.
09:24Those are the guys, what did I name, about seven players?
09:26So those are the guys that would not be curveballs.
09:28I think any other player is kind of a curveball.
09:30By the way, in Kuyper's draft, Kuyper's got Spencer Feneau, the offensive lineman from
09:38Utah, going to the Ravens at 14, and he's a guy who they believe could either be a swing
09:44tackle or could even be the team's next starting center.
09:48Look, the exercise we're doing here is...
10:02I mean, that's just a different receiver.
10:04It's kind of conventional wisdom.
10:06I'll work with you.
10:07Let's say they trade down and they take the guard from Penn State.
10:10They trade down, let's just say, to 20 or something, or with somebody.
10:12Or let's say they take Spencer Feneau from Utah.
10:15Okay, and they say, you know what?
10:16We think he could be our center, he could be guard, whatever.
10:21He's a versatile guy.
10:22We just wanted that depth.
10:24I'll be disappointed.
10:26That would be a disappointing pick.
10:27If they do that.
10:28I want to draft a stud.
10:30I don't...
10:31I know everyone wants to trade down and get more picks.
10:34I don't care about more picks.
10:36I want a stud.
10:37I want a can't-misser.
10:39And I know there's no such thing, but I think there are a few guys that are
10:42with a very high likelihood of hitting, and I think they're in the top five or six.
10:48I'll tell you who I think might be the safest pick of all, and he seems to be
10:51dropping on team's boards, and that's Caleb Downs.
10:55I think he might be, like...
10:58I don't see how he can miss.
11:00And he's kind of dropping because he didn't run.
11:03I guess he doesn't necessarily have the world's greatest measurables.
11:06He's a little on the smaller side.
11:08I think he's a can't-misser.
11:10But because of positional value, he's not being regarded as highly, at least in the last few days.
11:17But you wouldn't be surprised if he was taken there.
11:19Oh, I'd be thrilled.
11:20I'd be thrilled.
11:21I'd be like, that's a can't-misser, in my opinion.
11:24Some of these other guys, it'd be like, okay, a lot of potential there.
11:27Hope it hits.
11:27I feel like there's a good chance that Downs or Sonny Styles goes five to the Giants
11:33with the first of their two picks in the top ten.
11:36Right.
11:36I feel like if I could get a good price on betting one of those two names to go off
11:41the board there, that I would bet on that.
11:44Because they also love, obviously, Jordan Tyson.
11:47Joe Shane just had a dinner with him a few days ago, like a week before the draft.
11:52So that could be who they're eyeing at ten.
11:54Yeah.
11:54But I feel like five's early to take Jordan Tyson.
11:58Yeah.
11:58What if both Tyson and Tate are gone by seven?
12:01That's what I'm telling you.
12:02Then they could take, if they're still convinced, they could take Lemon.
12:05Yeah, I don't know if they would take him that high.
12:06But, yeah, I mean.
12:07That's why we're talking about curveballs.
12:09Yeah.
12:09I think if Tyson went to the Giants, let's just say the Giants really love Tyson,
12:16they'd take him.
12:17And then Cleveland, they might want a receiver.
12:20They'd take Tate.
12:22It could be out of the wide receiver business.
12:23They could be.
12:24But.
12:25Maybe they'd just jump on downs right there.
12:28They could.
12:29Or Stiles.
12:30I guess they could figure, you know, hey, we'll take downs, plug and play,
12:34and then we'll try to get a Diggs or somebody in here.
12:37Hopefully we get Iyuk.
12:38Mm-hmm.
12:38And we can, you know.
12:40They just band-aid it with some older guys instead of young guys.
12:43The problem is, it's obviously a need.
12:46We all know it.
12:48They went hard after a couple in the offseason.
12:50They know it.
12:51But, you know, if Terry, if this is, in fact, his last year, let's just say that the naysayers
12:58like Jason Bishop, Jason William Bishop are correct, and that Terry's off his A game,
13:05then they have no receiver next year.
13:08They have no receiver.
13:09If they don't, nobody to build around.
13:12That's why I think it really could be receiver.
13:16If this is Terry's last year, you've got to have the next guy.
13:20They don't have the next guy.
13:21They've got nothing.
13:22I know.
13:23Unless they go out and get one of those guys who hasn't signed yet.
13:25I'm totally getting suckered in, by the way, by what I'm sure is a smokescreen,
13:29that David Blau has to find his next Amon Ross St. Brown.
13:33So it's a guy that went to the same school, has the same body type as him, plays in the
13:37slot.
13:38That's why I think it might be a play.
13:39It makes too much sense.
13:41It makes curveball.
13:42It's very suspicious to me that all the mockers and everybody lately, they're putting Tate in there.
13:48Right.
13:48It's just suspicious to me.
13:50Because it'd be great.
13:51I'd be happy with Tate.
13:52Look, I wouldn't be surprised if Tyson goes before Tate.
13:55Tyson is just so dicey.
13:56I'd be kind of surprised if that happened.
13:58But, look, if the Giants can't keep it in their pants and they love Jordan Tyson, they're sitting there at
14:035,
14:03they may just say, we'll take Tyson here and we'll take whoever falls.
14:07Maybe Downs falls to us at 10.
14:09Here's what I think, KC, you would agree.
14:11From all the experts I've listened to, I've listened to a lot of these guys,
14:15Tyson, if it wasn't for injury, he'd be the number one receiver.
14:18Not even a question.
14:19Yeah, he's got a great skill set.
14:20And so if you think, hey, you know what, he had a broken collarbone, throw that out.
14:23That's a one-off.
14:24And then he had a hamstring issue.
14:26We don't want to handle hamstrings.
14:27How many college games did he play?
14:29I think about like half.
14:31But those are the issues.
14:31I think he only played like 17 college games in his career.
14:35But those are the issues.
14:35But he missed the whole year.
14:36Yeah.
14:37I did hear one defense that none of the injuries are related to the next.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Well, think about it.
14:42Collarbone's a one-off.
14:43Okay, hamstring's a lingering thing.
14:44But, you know, at the NFL level, they're like, we don't want to handle hamstrings.
14:48And the ACL's separate.
14:49That was years ago.
14:51Yep.
14:51Well, look, I just think you make great points about receiver.
14:55I mean, their number one receiver turns 31 before the season.
14:59And they're going to want to get out of the contract.
15:00And they're going to want to – they've got to get a young stud.
15:02So –
15:02And they're going to want to get out of the contract.
