Reynaldo López went just one inning yesterday against the Nationals, and his poor performance cost the Braves a game. While it's only a game, it did serve as a reminder of the depth concerns the Braves have on the mound.

00:00They lost to the Nationals 11-4.
00:02It was just a terrible first inning.
00:04Reynaldo Lopez didn't have his normal stuff.
00:06Got taken out after one inning.
00:08Five hits, four runs, three walks, one strikeout.
00:10That was the longest first inning I've seen in a minute.
00:12Yeah, it was frustrating to say the least.
00:14And for the most part, I mean, there was a couple pieces of good contact in there.
00:18But for the most part, it felt like, you know, walk, hit off the end of the bat,
00:23broken bat, single, those kind of things.
00:25And then all of a sudden, it just got upside down.
00:26I think the overall takeaway for me coming off that first inning
00:31was whether or not I should have any lingering concerns about Reynaldo Lopez.
00:35And the answer for me is no, because of those things I just talked about.
00:38The velocity was good.
00:40Location, just a little bit out of sorts.
00:42And I don't know if there's a mechanical issue.
00:44Remember, wasn't he the one we talked about back in spring training
00:48that had the dip in velocity?
00:51And they were like, it was just a tweak to the mechanics.
00:53And he was able to kind of open his hips again and get through there
00:56and have the velocity jump back up to 93.
00:58So the velocity was fine.
00:59I wonder if there's another tweak to the mechanics as far as location goes.
01:02But you kind of not knew it was coming.
01:06But we asked this question like two weeks ago.
01:08It was like, eventually, one of the question marks we had,
01:11we'll have a bump in the road.
01:12And he just happened to be number one.
01:14But I have no concerns as far as his outlook goes.
01:18Yeah, don't look now.
01:19But Jose Suarez has given up four on runs in his last, like, ten and so innings.
01:25So I don't know what he's found.
01:29But he might have found something, maybe a little something that he can hang his hat on.
01:35Look, I'm not saying he was unscathed.
01:39He was earned run-wise.
01:40But he did walk four guys last night.
01:45So it's not like he didn't put himself in some awkward situations
01:49and kind of run his pitch count up.
01:51But he's kind of quietly kind of turning into a guy that you can throw out there
01:59with a big lead and he won't, you know, scare you.
02:02Or you can bring him in a game where, you know, there you go.
02:06You didn't do much and, you know, your starting pitcher is abysmal.
02:11And you throw him out there and he can keep the game close
02:14because that's exactly what he did.
02:15At one point, this game was like four to three.
02:19And then, you know, you kind of got into the part where, you know,
02:23guys started really just let it go wide open.
02:29So it's just interesting how that is because you go look at it
02:32and Hamilton and Puyops are the guys that really let this game
02:38just get out of hand.
02:39But so a wonder if Suarez is going to be a guy that solidified a bullpen spot
02:45because he can also pitch every three days like that.
02:49And it's not because he pitched, what, just Friday night like that.
02:52Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised with him last night
02:55because, you know, having to warm up in the first inning
02:58has to be a little bit jarring.
02:59It's like, I don't know.
03:01I don't know.
03:01I was just about to start my nap.
03:03Right.
03:03I was just about to start my nap.
03:05I did not know how it was going to go.
03:08But like Bo mentioned, he did pitch three innings, four walks, four strikeouts.
03:11So he did hold it down for a moment until, yes, it just got away from everyone.
03:16But to me, it's like a toddler when they fall.
03:18Like they fall, all right, walk it off.
03:19Get back up.
03:20We're fine.
03:20They're going to play again tonight.
03:21We're going to be fine.
03:22I'm with you.
03:23And look, there's been so much good grace kind of built up
03:26with the way they've looked over the last couple series.
03:28And I think it'll be interesting to see the way the rest of this series
03:31does play out because you do have, you know, sale going on Thursday.
03:35That's a big series against the Phillies coming up this weekend.
03:38You're due a roster move.
03:40I wonder if there's not a roster move coming where maybe sale does slide back
03:44to a Friday.
03:45But wins are wins in the month of April.
03:47And so you're going to get all of them that you can.
03:48And hopefully you can go out and at least get another series split
03:51and, you know, maybe even go further than that.
03:54Sorry, you need an outing tonight from Perez like he gave you in Philly.
03:59I don't care if he grinds it out.
04:00Just go through and give me at least five innings of two runs or less
04:06and I think we win the game.
04:08I do.
04:09This is the way I feel about this team right now offensively.
04:11I mean, they scored runs last night.
04:14And, you know, you just couldn't – you just got to a point where you couldn't
04:18do enough offensively because you were just so bad from a pitching standpoint
04:23last night.
04:25The move thing is interesting because I did see Fuentes' name mentioned
04:29multiple times.
04:30So he might be on his way.
04:33I don't think that they'll move sell, though.
04:35I think sell will pitch as he's scheduled on getaway day.
04:41One o'clock, I think, on Thursday, so I'm at 1.15.
04:44Well, and Rysell Glacius was placed on the 15-day IL with right shoulder
04:50inflammation.
04:51I'm wondering if that is still lingering from the sore neck he had the other day.
04:56Like, he slept on his shoulder wrong.
04:58Or maybe it wasn't that he slept on his shoulder wrong the whole time.
05:01Maybe he was like, I think I slept on it wrong.
05:03And then it turned out to be something.
05:04I don't know.
05:04That's great.
05:05Yeah, I'd be interested to know that.
05:07And, of course, we are eagerly awaiting Spencer Strider's return.
05:10He had a great night in Gwinnett with Sean Murphy catching.
05:13He did.
05:14His velocity averaged 96 miles per hour, topped at 98, and went for 65 pitches.
05:18So he could be ready for 80 pitches next time.
05:21I hope so.
05:22And I know Grant was tweeting it out, talking about it, you know,
05:25the ramp up from 80 pitches to 90 pitches and then, you know,
05:29where you're at after that and what you kind of want to do.
05:32You know, Bo spoke on it earlier.
05:33It's you want to be very comfortable with where he's at,
05:36but you also need him badly.
05:38I guess not badly.
05:39That's a little bit over the top.
05:40That's a little bit hyperbole.
05:41You don't need him badly.
05:42But you'd like to see him back in a Braves rotation sooner rather than later.
05:45No, I think it's a little bit opposite.
05:48I know you kind of misspoke, and that's not really how you feel,
05:52but you've given yourself enough leeway to make sure he is 100% ready to go.
05:58He's healthy.
05:59There's no rush because you're 16-8, five games up over second place,
06:04which the Nats are tied with the Marlins for that.
06:06The Phillies and the – and you kind of expect the Nats and the Marlins to slowly fade,
06:13but the Phillies and the Mets were supposed to be contenders.
06:15They were supposed to be guys that you would finish maybe behind both of them,
06:18and they are not close.
06:23You know, the Mets lost their 12th straight game.
06:26I think the Phillies lost yesterday.
06:27So you've given yourself a little bit of space, and hopefully Hurston Waldrop,
06:32who I know is throwing again, can slowly work back.
06:37Maybe you get Strider back by mid-May.
06:39Maybe Waldrop back by mid-June.
06:42Maybe July.
06:44And then what you want – maybe what you need to do or what you're desperate –
06:50what you're maybe possibly a desperate need is not necessarily a need anymore.
06:54I don't know.
06:56Hopefully you'd love that it happened,
06:58and then you can figure out what to do with the trade deadline
07:01where you can make this team better.
07:03Because right now they look pretty good in a few spots.
07:06And the Braves will get another shot at the Nationals tonight at 645.
07:10Martin Perez is set to pitch.
07:12Tomorrow the Hawks face the Knicks in Game 3 of their first-run playoff series.
07:16Remember, the only place to get the game for free with local announcers
