Central Asian leaders back proposal for UN water agency

Leaders from across Central Asia, alongside representatives from countries including Georgia, Armenia, Mongolia and Azerbaijan, are taking part in discussions on regional environmental priorities.

00:00All five Central Asian countries have joined the initiative to create an international
00:04water organization under the United Nations.
00:07The idea of establishment was proposed by Kazakhstan's President Kassamzhu Martukaev
00:11in Turkmenistan last year.
00:13Heads of the state from Central Asia and the Caucasus along with delegations from 15 countries
00:18gathered in Astana today to the Regional Ecological Summit.
00:21Water security is a matter of extreme importance for Kazakhstan as well as for the whole Central
00:28Asia. Our future depends on managing this vital resource wisely and fairly.
00:35This initiative is particularly timely as the UN is currently reviewing thousands of mandates
00:43offering an opportunity to strengthen coherence and effectiveness in global governance.
00:51The region continues to face the long-standing ROC crisis alongside declining water levels
00:56in the Caspian Sea.
00:57Kazakhstan has managed to rise the level of the North ROC by almost 40% through ongoing
01:03recovery efforts.
01:04Against this backdrop, there is an increasing focus on green development initiatives across
01:08Central Asia, particularly in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.
01:13Many of these projects are being implemented with the support of international financial
01:17institutions, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European
01:22Investment Bank.

01:53will run for three days featuring 58 events on the agenda. Central Asian countries and their
01:58Eurasian regional neighbors aim to deepen cooperation on sustainable development by
02:02signing a joint declaration titled Environmental Solidarity of Central Asia.
