00:18As pessimistic as one can get these days, the garden's our hope, the earth is our hope,
00:24nature is our hope. I just think if people had all this knowledge, if people continue to gravitate
00:32towards learning about sustainability, I think we can see a turn, but everybody's got to pitch in.
00:40Humans will survive. There'll be mass population decline, and then there'll be a small group of
00:46people that will be able to continue on, and their lineage will be able to continue on.
00:52But a lot of us are going to die. And we'll just add a laugh track.
01:04Call out the instigator, because there's something in the air.
01:14We've got to get together sooner or later, because the revolution's here, and you know it's fine.
01:44There's a lot of scraps. A lot of scraps in the world. What do we do with all these scraps?
01:53Well, you pile them up, and then you plant something in those scraps. So today, let's talk about compost.
02:10Welcome to our garden. Thank you, Isla. It's nice to be here.
02:19What's your favorite thing about composting?
02:21That we get to use all the dead stuff and brush it up.
02:26And turn it into something that we can use to plant other things.
02:31Yes.
02:32That's the miracle of it, right?
02:33Yes.
02:34You want a piece of gum?
02:35Okay.
02:36No, no, no. Wait. I can't.
02:37Okay.
02:38Wait, are you allowed to at school?
02:40I don't know.
02:41Show me around, Ewan. What's in here?
02:43We got some edible flowers.
02:45Oh, my gosh. These are edible flowers.
02:48Yeah.
02:49They don't taste that good to me.
02:51They're not my favorite.
02:57Aw.
02:58What is it?
02:59It kind of tastes like a tree.
03:01How do you know what a tree tastes like?
03:04You've never eaten a tree?
03:05No.
03:06Okay. Let's go this way.
03:07Show me more this way.
03:08Okay.
03:09What do you like about gardening?
03:10I like to dig up stuff.
03:14I like seeing how they grow.
03:17What is your favorite vegetable?
03:19Probably some carrots.
03:20Mmm, cucumber.
03:21I like broccoli.
03:23You do like broccoli!
03:24It's my favorite.
03:26What's your favorite fruit?
03:27Kale.
03:28Kale's not a fruit.
03:30Oh, yeah.
03:30Your favorite fruit is?
03:32Mango.
03:33I love a good mango.
03:35Yeah.
03:36I like your hairstyle.
03:37Yeah?
03:37You and I have good, kind of rebellious hairstyles, you and I, don't you think?
03:41Yeah.
03:42What kind of music do you listen to?
03:43Nickelbacks?
03:45No.
03:45Nobody.
03:46Can't find one person.
03:48These are ghost peppers.
03:50Are they haunted?
03:51No.
03:52Well, then why do they call them ghost peppers?
03:54Because they're really hot.
03:57But most ghosts aren't known for being hot.
03:59If you could be anything in the world that you wanted to be, what would you be?
04:04I want to be a vet.
04:06You don't mean a veteran, you mean a veterinarian.
04:09Yeah.
04:09Yeah.
04:11Probably somebody who works in a show.
04:13Works in a show?
04:14Yeah.
04:14Oh, like show business stuff.
04:16Yeah, like, have you ever seen School Walk?
04:18Who's that with?
04:19Jack Black.
04:21Never heard of that guy.
04:22He's one of my favorite actors.
04:24Good for him.
04:25No, my first favorite is Ryan Reynolds.
04:27Ryan Reynolds.
04:28It'd be nice to meet an actor one day.
04:29Yeah.
04:30It would be nice to meet Ryan Reynolds and Jack Black.
04:33Yeah.
04:34You ever heard of this guy, Zach Galifianakis?
04:38Yeah.
04:38What do you think of that guy?
04:39It's not my favorite.
04:41Hmm.
04:43There's scarlet runner beans, and under here there's probably one that's cut open.
04:50Wow.
04:51Look how gorgeous that is.
04:53You know what they look like?
04:54Cyndi Lauper's pants.
04:55What?
04:55You think you could do a little test like what is a plant and what is not a plant?
05:00Yeah.
05:01Okay.
05:01Asparagus plant or not a plant?
05:03Plant.
05:04Sweet potato.
05:05Plant.
05:06Sour potato.
05:07Not plant.
05:08Endive.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Swan dive.
05:11No.
05:12Eggplant.
05:13Plant.
05:14Scrambled eggplant.
05:15Not plant.
05:16Robert plant.
05:18Not plant.
05:19You're good.
05:20You're very, very good.
05:24Can I smoke out here?
05:26No.
05:26You're not allowed to smoke.
05:29Oh.
05:29Kale is one of the most hardy plants, don't you think?
05:32Actually...
05:32Oh, what happened?
05:34Broke off.
05:36Let's go.
05:38Has Ryan Reynolds ever been to this garden?
05:41No.
05:42Yeah.
05:42Doesn't seem interested.
05:43I'm gonna read the list of names, and I want you to tell me if they're fruits or vegetables
05:48or not.
05:49Okay.
05:50Ready?
05:51Horseradish.
05:52Vegetable?
05:53Yes.
05:54Jackfruit.
05:55I think it's a fruit.
05:56Jack Black.
05:57Never heard of it.
05:59You never heard of Jack Black?
06:00Yeah.
06:00Who has?
06:03Liberace's.
06:04Not a fruit?
06:04That just doesn't make any sense.
06:07It doesn't make a lot of sense.
06:09That's probably the wisest thing anyone's said on this show.
06:12I knew you were smart the moment you walked in here.
06:14I could tell.
06:15But glasses doesn't mean I actually...
06:18No, I know.
06:18And I don't...
06:19You're right.
06:19I don't want to stereotype.
06:20And my beard doesn't mean that I'm smart.
06:24Oh.
06:26Composting provides the ideal environment for organisms like bacteria and fungi.
06:31Excuse me.
06:32Fungi.
06:33To break down organic waste.
06:35The stuff left over is compost.
06:41It would be cool if it produced fungi though.
06:43Woo-hoo.
06:45Or tech bros.
06:46Uh-huh.
06:51And I know of you sit around your house in the morning, drinking your coffee, thinking
06:54to yourself, man, if I could just one day talk to a composting expert.
07:02We found one.
07:06Let's go talk to Joyce.
07:09Well, some of this hasn't broken down yet.
07:11It's kind of wasteful.
07:20Joyce.
07:21Hey, Zach.
07:22Hey.
07:23Good to see you.
07:24Nice to see you.
07:25Yeah.
07:25I'm very excited about all this.
07:27Welcome to Maryville.
07:28Hey, thank you for having me.
07:29I brought you some peppers from my garden.
07:31It's the last thing in my greenhouse.
07:33Woo-hoo.
07:33I don't know.
07:34But they're just...
07:35Oh, that's gold.
07:36Nice peppers, yeah.
07:37Beauty.
07:37Seven dollars.
07:39I owe you seven dollars.
07:43So the question is, what is compost?
07:47Compost is decomposing organic matter.
07:52Soil is earth that is alive.
07:55It's a mixture of sand and clay and silt.
07:59But in order to make soil alive, you need to add a lot of organic material to it.
08:04And so the ideal way to do that is by adding compost.
08:08And then all this compost will feed the plants.
08:11What you want in compost is a nice mix of high carbon and leaves are your classic example,
08:20and grass clippings are your classic example.
08:23But we're talking about not this kind of grass clippings.
08:26No, no.
08:26Well, you can't do that.
08:28You could compost that.
08:29That'd be great for your compost.
08:30I don't even know what you're talking about.
08:32You have set up an amazing...
08:34Is it a quiz?
08:35What'd you say?
08:36This is the test your compost skills game.
08:40Some of it is great for your compost.
08:42Some of it is terrible for your compost.
08:44And some is debatable.
08:46Okay.
08:46All right.
08:47Let's get started.
08:47Do you mind if I just say yes or no?
08:50Okay.
08:51Plastic?
08:52Do you think I'm an idiot?
08:54Don't answer that.
08:55Dog or cat poo?
08:57No.
08:58Is this supposed to represent that?
08:59Well, you don't want me out here with dog poop on the table.
09:02That's a good point.
09:03I was going to say, whoever's dog this is, I'd like to have one just like this.
09:06Because this is a great bet.
09:09Okay.
09:09Coffee?
09:10One of the greatest things.
09:12Shredded paper?
09:13Good.
09:13Really good.
09:14Eggshells?
09:14Fantastic.
09:15As calcium.
09:16Yep.
09:16Clothes.
09:17I would put 100% cotton clothes in there, but I wouldn't necessarily put my jock strap
09:21that's made in Italy.
09:23You're good.
09:24My high-end jock strap that I wear.
09:26My personal opinion is the teabag industry sold out and made all these plastic.
09:31So they can go themselves.
09:33Ouch!
09:34Sorry to excuse my language.
09:35Ouch!
09:38Ouch!
09:40Why do I feel like I don't want to put bread in mine?
09:43Because of mold factors?
09:44Because of animal factors.
09:46Oh, okay.
09:46Not mold.
09:47Mold is great for your compost.
09:49It's another decomposer, right?
09:50It's still helping to break stuff down.
09:52Yeah, I guess right.
09:53That's right.
09:54You can touch eggshells.
09:55Dairy.
09:56If you're going to put these animal attractants in a plastic thing.
09:59Gotta do metal.
10:00Yeah, or bury it in deep so that animals can't smell it.
10:03Most of this stuff is great for compost.
10:06Yeah.
10:06It's kind of, if human beings have touched it, just kind of stay away from it almost.
10:11You want all this to be nature.
10:12Sure, that's a good...
10:13I mean...
10:14The closer to the tree, right?
10:16Can I show you my compost?
10:17Yes, please.
10:17All right.
10:18So what do you think?
10:19Oh, that's great.
10:20Not bad, right?
10:21Yeah, really.
10:22There might be a finger.
10:23Oh.
10:23Don't tell anybody.
10:25Terrible accident at the house.
10:27It's beautiful.
10:27I'm impressed.
10:28You've done a great job.
10:30I'm very, very, very happy to hear you say that.
10:32Yeah.
10:32Yes.
10:32It's nice and rich and...
10:34Oh, smell that.
10:36Yeah, it smells...
10:37No, this was not the case when I dug it out.
10:40It was a little stinky and now it's dried up a bit.
10:42Oh.
10:42So probably on the bottom it might be still stinky.
10:45If it's stinky...
10:46No good.
10:46Just to decompose some more.
10:47And you probably need to add some more carbon, some more of your...
10:50But this is a good smell, right?
10:51Oh, yeah, yeah.
10:52Smell this.
10:56So these are our speedy bins.
10:59My dad started the speedy bin business 30 years ago.
11:03They're designed to keep out rats because the fear of rats is the main reason that people don't compost at
11:09home.
11:09And so our goal is to resolve that further.
11:13Get rid of that fear.
11:13Yeah.
11:13I dig a little hole.
11:15Yeah.
11:15Pour in all the stinkies.
11:20And then cover it over.
11:23And then because that is high nitrogen, we need to balance it with your carbon source, so in this case
11:28our leaves.
11:28And so what I generally do is for every pail full of scraps I'll put in a couple handfuls of
11:33leaves.
11:34On the top...
11:35Yeah, and look at all these worms, eh?
11:36Oh, yeah.
11:37Look at that.
11:37That's...
11:38That is a healthy compost.
11:40Right.
11:40That means it's alive.
11:41And there's gonna be thousands of different decomposing microbes in there.
11:47You can't buy that.
11:48You cannot go to a store and buy this beautiful, rich stuff.
11:55For one thing, if you were to buy it in a store, they would probably pasteurize it and kill all
12:00the goodness in it, right?
12:01And also wrap it in plastic and there's more problems.
12:03Yeah.
12:04You can make your own stuff.
12:05Exactly.
12:06Yeah.
12:07I mean, this is all the future.
12:08It has to be the future.
12:10Yeah.
12:10It has to be.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Amazing.
12:12Joyce, I'm so glad that I got to meet you.
12:16Honestly.
12:17This has been a thrill.
12:18Yeah, it's been great for me, too.
12:19Really good.
12:20We need a lot of people like you in the future.
12:22We really, really do.
12:23Yeah.
12:24The heroes of the earth.
12:26Thank you, Joyce.
12:45You know, I always tell people, you know, if you're going to go into the garden, there's no need for
12:50any technology.
12:57All those bells and whistles that come through the phone are not needed.
13:01You need to be in the earth.
13:06Hold on.
13:07Hold on.
13:10Hold on.
13:14Hello?
13:16Hey.
13:17I'm doing some garden show.
13:20What are you doing?
13:21Sick.
13:23All right.
13:24Bye.
13:43Bye.
13:59Wow.
13:59Look at this forest.
14:01Should be a lot of things around here today.
14:03That we can compost.
14:07That checks out.
14:08That checks out.
14:09That checks out.
14:10That checks out.
14:10No Nerf products.
14:12Okay.
14:13I think we're good.
14:14Guys, should we sing some songs?
14:16Yeah.
14:18Composting is so fun.
14:20Everybody.
14:21Composting is so fun.
14:25Composting is so fun.
14:27Guess who's not fun at all?
14:30Ryan Reynolds.
14:33Okay.
14:33Here we go, guys.
14:37Good job.
14:47Hey, Ewan.
14:48I know the lady that makes these.
14:52You ever met Joyce?
14:54No.
14:54She's a smart ass.
14:58Okay.
15:05I honestly think for human beings and for the world itself, the only future is agrarian.
15:14We should all know how to garden.
15:16It's a better hobby than jet skiing.
15:20It's a better hobby than...
15:22I used to alphabetize my coat hangers just for fun.
15:26It's good for you.
15:27Plus, it feeds you.
15:30Trust me.
15:31You're talking to a guy that used to eat cigarettes.
15:35Why gardening?
15:38Well, why not?
15:41Good enough.
15:42Everybody go home.
15:47Ow!
15:51Hey, Zach.
15:52It's Ryan Reynolds.
15:53I saw the show.
15:54I'm not a huge fan, but I love the gardening.
15:57I like the topics and the message and the love.
16:00You know, I love the guests.
16:02I'm not a huge fan of whatever it is that you personally are doing, though.
16:06But I was wondering if you could pass my number on to Ewan.
16:10If you wouldn't mind, I have a couple of projects.
16:12I'd love to run by him.
16:13Bye!
16:16Ah, don't you hate it when people do?
16:18Bye!
16:19I hate it so much.
16:20Bye!
16:22Oh, God.
16:22I'm doing it all over again.
16:24All right.
16:24I hate you.
16:25See ya.
16:25What?
16:26When people die, do they throw bodies in there as combos?
16:31Woo-hoo.
16:35I love them.
16:36Cool.
16:40Bye.
16:41Bye.
16:41Bye.
16:42Bye.
