00:00With 110 murders recorded for the year to date, and a woman, police, and a young child among the victims,
00:08calls have been growing from concerned members of the public for a curfew to be implemented.
00:13However, one senator does not believe that is the solution.
00:17I don't really see how a curfew would make much of a difference.
00:20I don't know, given the nature of the crimes that were taking place,
00:25whether there is much more that the government could have done to prevent it.
00:30I think the government is trying its best.
00:34But, you know, crime has so many facets.
00:39Senator Vieira also responded to calls from some quarters for the prime minister to address the nation.
00:46Everybody has their own style.
00:49I don't get the impression that she's not working.
00:55You know, her style might be to sit back and let her line ministers go in front and deal with
01:00it.
01:01And I think that's a fair position to take.
01:03On Sunday, the opposition called for international support and intervention
01:08following WPC Eversley's murder and the looting of the police station.
01:14How would foreign intervention have prevented that?
01:18How would foreign intervention assist us in that type of crime, you know?
01:22Well, a lot of people feel that our local systems lack integrity and can be compromised or already compromised.
01:32I am a great believer in this country, in the people of this country.
01:39I believe that we can fix what is wrong in this country.
01:45I don't see the need for any foreign intervention or help.
01:49This is our problem.
01:51Meantime, the senator is throwing his support behind Police Commissioner Alistair Guevaro,
01:57saying he has confidence in the top cop.
02:00I think I do.
02:03He has a unique way of speaking, but he seems to be leading from in front, and I think he's
02:10doing his best.
02:11Independent Senator Sophia Chot SC acknowledges that the crime situation is troubling.
02:17However, she too is putting her faith in the police commissioner.
02:21Yes, I do.
02:25And I hope that he only continues to build and grow and develop his skills.
02:29A little bit that I've read indicates that the powers that be do not think that a curfew might be
02:36the most appropriate course of action right now.
02:39I would imagine, especially in light of what occurred at the police station,
02:44that the commissioner of police is working assiduously to solve that crime
02:48and to bring those people who are accused of having committed that crime brought to justice.
