With Greens leader Shane Rattenbury’s decision to walk away from ACT politics after 17-years in the legislative assembly there will soon be a countback to fill the seat. While it is expected a former MLA and minister would be the easy pic, who will be the future leader of the minor party is less clear.

00:02Shane Rattenbury insists the blowback from the now shelved idea of a power-sharing arrangement
00:08with the Liberals wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back.
00:11We landed where we did.
00:12I'm okay with that.
00:13That's the point of having a party.
00:17If you want to just do it the way you exactly want to do it, go and be an independent.
00:20Even so, he concedes had it gone ahead, the timing of his resignation would have been
00:25different.
00:26I was disappointed in the way the conversation probably didn't get explored as thoroughly
00:29in our party as it might have.
00:30Former MLAs argue there are merits to being on the crossbench, but Mr Rattenbury was
00:36always ambitious.
00:37What is important for government is what do you actually spend your limited resources
00:42on?
00:42Do you fix the footpath that's next to us where there's no signs left anymore?
00:47Do you build a new school?
00:49Whatever.
00:49That's the things that make a big difference to government and if you want to do that,
00:55it's core cabinet.
00:56Former Greens MLA and Minister Rebecca Vassarotti lost her seat in Currajong at the last election.
01:03She's yet to confirm whether she'll throw her hat in the ring for the count back.
01:08If she does, under the Hare-Clark electoral system, it's expected she'll succeed.
01:13The commission will go back and look at all of the votes that contributed to Shane Rattenbury's
01:17election and look at who those voters preferenced after Shane Rattenbury. Work out who their
01:22next preferred candidate would be. It tends to be the case that if someone's voting for
01:26a Green candidate, they'll also vote for other Greens candidates.
01:29Today, none of the Greens MLA's were willing to comment about whether they'll put themselves
01:33forward for leadership positions, with that process of election by party members not expected
01:38to begin until late next month.
01:41If elected, the party's former deputy leader would also be eligible for a tilt alongside
01:46current deputy leader Joe Clay and MLA's Andrew Braddock and Laura Nuttall.
01:51You need people who can talk to people across all party lines, consider all the opportunities
01:57and find ways to move forward to progress things that are good for the community. So yeah, we've
02:04got multiple people who could do that.
02:06Important decisions for a minor party that wants to stand out amid a rise of interest in independence.
