00:00Do you know who you're talking to? No. Apparently no. Bulldog is back from Yellowstone.
00:06I am back. You're wearing the shirt? I am wearing the shirt. I'm the guy that went to the concert
00:10last night.
00:10Yes, I saw Styx last night on the Grand Illusion tour. So I've got the t-shirt to prove that
00:16I was there.
00:16Anybody sign it? Any wild animals? I did not get any wild animals signage.
00:24Okapi? Any Okapi sign it? I'm jealous. I'm sure it was amazing.
00:29All the animals. And watched plenty of hockey. The way my days shook out, I saw a lot.
00:36I mean, a few hours of it was on an airplane yesterday, but still, way to go United. Your Wi
00:42-Fi worked.
00:44Not Manchester United. No. The Friendly Skies United.
00:49Well, it worked out great for you Sunday night, right?
00:51It really did. Yeah, it was really the end of the trip. So, perfect.
00:56Tell us how you experienced this game.
00:59It was not, it could have been, I think there definitely was a scenario in a window where I could
01:09have been at a crowded place and gotten people rooting for the Sabres.
01:14Because they were, you know, we had enough time. We got to Montana on Thursday and we were within like
01:19a 75 mile radius the whole time we were there.
01:24From where we stayed the first night to where we stayed the majority of the trip and even the Yellowstone
01:28Park.
01:29We were very close.
01:30So we went to a couple of places and felt places out like Thursday evening, Friday evening.
01:34Like, would this be a good place? Would you put a hockey game on in here for me?
01:39Like, absolutely. We're going to watch how we're watching. Montana likes hockey, it appears.
01:44Like, it was on Saturday afternoon. It was on every place we went. And we went to three, four places.
01:49Were you in Bozeman?
01:51Bozeman is where we flew in and out of and spent Thursday night.
01:56I've never paid close enough attention. Is Bozeman on that top ten list every time of markets that watch the
02:03playoffs like we are?
02:04I don't know.
02:05Buffalo, Providence, West Palm Beach, Florida, Bozeman.
02:10I don't know if there's a Montana market that makes the cut there or not.
02:13How many people live there? Like, if you have a thousand people, they have more than that.
02:16Yeah.
02:16If you had a thousand people and 200 watched the playoffs, you'd break records.
02:21Right. Yeah. Because you're, yeah, the majority of your, yeah.
02:24Yeah. But anyway, I ended up, we were sort of cooling our heels Sunday afternoon.
02:31We went out, we did a full day Saturday, all the animals except for the moose.
02:36Still, the quest continues for the moose.
02:39Lights are booked.
02:41We had a wildlife guide on Saturday and he told us that moose are everywhere in the Grand Tetons.
02:48So I think, like, that's the next trip.
02:50But anyway.
02:51Wyoming.
02:51Wyoming, yeah.
02:53Josh Allen country.
02:54So Saturday, Sunday, whatever, we're just out, just doing stuff, great, like, you know, wonderful meals, just a great trip.
03:02Sunday afternoon, we're sort of cooling our heels in the room, 3 o'clock, couple hours till game time.
03:08Everything is still on the table.
03:09This place, that place, any other place.
03:12Like, trying to figure out what to do.
03:14And the knock comes at the door.
03:17And it's someone from the hotel, obviously, I guess, or a housekeeping.
03:22And I answer the door and they have an envelope with my name on it.
03:27And the woman just says, this is from housekeeping, just wanted to pass it along.
03:31So I close the door and open it up.
03:33And it's a little handwritten note to me.
03:35Mr. Parker, we understand.
03:37I don't know if I have the wording.
03:38I tweeted it.
03:39But I understand if you've worked up a thirst over 14 years of a playoff drought, but here's a couple
03:46of drink tokens for the bar.
03:48We'd love to see you tonight.
03:50Like, well, now I feel like this is where I'm going to watch.
03:55I think I want to go watch the game here.
03:57Not that I hadn't been to the bar yet.
03:59It was just down the hall from our room.
04:01So I decided, okay, we're just going to do that.
04:04And we were the only people watching.
04:06Is that right?
04:07In the bar.
04:08Oh, no.
04:08There were people there, but there wasn't a lot.
04:11If there had been Saturday at the same time of day, well, actually a little earlier in the day, the
04:16bar was packed with people watching hockey.
04:19And I was having a great time watching.
04:22Colorado.
04:23Yeah.
04:24Later on, like Ottawa, Carolina, maybe.
04:26Was that Saturday afternoon?
04:29Saturday, yes.
04:29Yeah, yeah.
04:30So, you know, that was really cool.
04:32And I'm like, oh, well, it'll be like that again.
04:33I guess we'll just go here.
04:34They just, you know, were thoughtful enough to find out that I'm staying here.
04:38And so, okay.
04:40Nobody is in there watching the game.
04:42Wow.
04:44After the second period ended, we went back to the room.
04:47And it sort of, like, felt like, you know, I'm, like, I'm wont to do.
04:52The Sabres are losing.
04:53And it's 2-0 right away there, right to start the third period.
04:55And, like, okay, learn lessons.
04:58It's the playoffs.
04:59The goalie was really good.
05:00Da-da-da-da-da.
05:01And then the game just, like, you know, tipped on its head, obviously.
05:04But that was all just me and my wife in a hotel room.
05:08That can be good.
05:09It was a really nice room with a view of mountains and, like, a fireplace outside.
05:12But it still was, like, there was not a scene because we did not go where there would be one.
05:20And there wasn't one that came to us.
05:22And you might have had, I don't have any excuse in not finding a scene.
05:28You might have an excuse.
05:31You might not have had an easy time finding a scene.
05:33I'm pretty sure, like I said, there was a place we went on Saturday afternoon that was, like, borderline dirt
05:42floor, Old West Saloon.
05:45Saloon doors, like the swinging doors.
05:47Love the swinging doors.
05:48Then an actual door behind the swinging doors.
05:50But, like, the entrance from outside is swinging doors, right?
05:55And cool band playing in there, like, kind of cool hippie cowboy vibe, like, and hockey on, like, six TVs.
06:05Wow.
06:06Saturday afternoon.
06:06Like, I'm sure that that place would have been a scene if we had gone there.
06:11And we could have maybe made it a scene for the Sabres if we had gone there.
06:15Like, hey, these people are from Buffalo.
06:16Ah!
06:17Whatever.
06:18You take a jersey or a shirzy or a visor or anything?
06:23I had my Sabres hat.
06:25Hat.
06:25A hat.
06:26Yeah.
06:26Counts.
06:28And so I think we could have found a scene.
06:30It was just, I felt compelled because the lodge we were saying that was so thoughtful to send this note.
06:36And I'm like, all right, we'll just go down there.
06:38And it just turned out to be nothing burger.
06:40I wore a jersey downtown Sunday.
06:42All right.
06:43I mean, for me.
06:44Yeah.
06:45I'm wearing a Blue Jays visor today.
06:48So you were, what?
06:49My son wanted to go to the canal side.
06:52Oh, okay.
06:53He was enjoying his so-called 15 minutes from being on the video when he was shown, all his
07:04friends lifted him up in the air at the party at the plaza or whatever it was.
07:08Oh, wow.
07:10But I threw on a Ryan Miller and went and hit some golf balls with Jeremy and just dropped
07:15him off and watched the game with my wife and daughter, which was its own scene.
07:20And yesterday in here, most of what we did ended up, as you might expect, sounding like 2006 where
07:28we're talking about superstitions and I had to leave the room because the TV was on or I had to
07:34turn it off
07:35or I had to do these different things.
07:37And, you know, now it's like we've talked about for weeks here to, with people in mind that have never
07:43experienced it, we're already to the next one.
07:46Right.
07:47Tonight.
07:47That's right.
07:48So a loss tonight and game one is like, oh, whatever.
07:51Yeah, right.
07:52Good thing.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Tomorrow's show, if they lose tonight, tomorrow's show is, thank God.
07:56Thank God they won game one.
07:57They won game one.
07:57Because you're going, you know, to Boston with a split, which is absolutely all Boston really
08:03wanted when they came here.
08:05Welcome back.
08:06All the old, you know, well, we, you know, we really wanted to do was get one, you know,
08:11and if they get the second one, well, you know, we were really hoping to get to whatever.
08:15It's hockey, man.
08:16And they come fast and furious and the ride is relentless usually.
08:21And so, yeah, I mean, what a perfect, I'm sure everything's been said.
08:26You know, nobody needs to hear me rehash Sunday, but what a perfect re-entry into the world
08:33of the playoffs.
08:34It's like despair for two and a half hours or two hours.
08:38Despair.
08:38They were playing badly, but they could not score and they're losing two to nothing.
08:42Disappointment.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Disappointment.
08:44Like, like I said, we let, we left, like I said, let's go watch the rest of us in the
08:48room.
08:49Uh, now again, we weren't disappointing anyone.
08:51There was the only people there watching the hockey game.
08:53Like, well, let's just go back to the room and just sort of, okay, start licking wounds
08:58and figuring out how to posit how disappointing this is and whatever.
09:03And then it just flipped on its head.
09:05And then it's absolute euphoria for what hours after the game ended.
09:11Like the, the, I enjoyed watching the scenes of people leaving the arena as much as watching
09:16the highlights of the plays of the goals, uh, and, and hearing the reaction.
09:20Like just seeing people experience that level of emotion again about the hockey team is
09:28very hard for me to keep at arm's length.
09:32I just want to, I want to, I want it pouring over me at all times because that's how I
09:36feel
09:36about the hockey team.
09:37And when I see it manifests itself like that, it's just awesome.
09:41Well, two, nothing, uh, as it clicks under eight minutes, one to 10, it'd be like a two
09:49or a three because they weren't getting dominated, but they were getting shut out at home in the
09:55first playoff game in 15 years.
09:56So, you know, it was pretty low Thompson from behind the net.
10:00Okay.
10:02Six.
10:03I mean, there's enough time here left where they could get one more.
10:07I was saying yesterday, how in my house, I said, just get me to midnight, get this game
10:11to midnight and I'll be, I'll, I'll take it.
10:14And then you have the second goal, which I just have been obsessing about.
10:19Um, I'll get back to that.
10:20I want, I saw some of you were obsessing.
10:22I, I, yeah, good, good, good.
10:24I think it's a very good catch.
10:25You sound like, you know, what happened.
10:27I have a, I have a good, okay.
10:28I can't wait to find out.
10:29So Thompson makes it two, two.
10:31Then I'm like an eight.
10:33Cause you know, we're even right.
10:35Right.
10:35And they're the better team in this game.
10:37Like I'm not going to use momentum cause I don't care about that, but still they're
10:41rolling.
10:42I mean, I got four, I got four minutes and a tie.
10:44I'll take it at home.
10:45Yeah.
10:45And then Samuel saying, oh, I mean, that's euphoric.
10:49And then talk Thompson again, makes a great play on that empty net goal.
10:54Just to bank it off the glass and out perfectly to, to talk some luck in that.
11:00But four, two, when Boston made it four, three, I was laughing hilariously at home.
11:05I was like, oh, that's funny.
11:07And then, uh, then it's over.
11:09So now to whatever everybody else says, you know, you haven't won anything yet, but great
11:16night and good enough start to feel like you could make a run here.
11:20Yeah.
11:21The over the overall here, I mean, um, remove the euphoria and the drama of the comeback
11:29and you know, how long it took for them to finally get on the board and everything else.
11:33Like to me, they were clearly the better team.
11:36Like it looked like the matchup to me that validated wanting to play the Bruins.
11:40Yes.
11:41Right.
11:41Like they, they, they, they really, you were going to have the puck all the time.
11:45Turned out the Sabres were initiating the physicality in the game with something I wasn't
11:49exactly expecting.
11:50Um, it's a weird combination to have the puck as much as they had the puck and also out
11:55hit the team you're playing.
11:56Cause usually that's the other way around.
11:58You don't have the pucks you're chasing and you're hitting people trying to get something
12:01going your way, whatever.
12:03Um, so yeah, now it's just like, I, I feel really good about the series recognizing that,
12:09you know, tonight could be the same script except, you know, you somehow Thompson doesn't
12:14get that second goal because Swayman doesn't mysteriously lift his leg for reasons that
12:18I will guess about whenever you want me to.
12:20Okay.
12:21Um, you know, so it's, it's, it's still going to be super tight.
12:25I mean, look at these games so far, right?
12:28Yeah, sure.
12:28Philly shut out Pittsburgh three nothing last night.
12:31Um, still, but everything has been nip and tuck here.
12:35LA Colorado.
12:36I saw a lot of that and LA has to be going into this game tonight feeling like they did
12:42everything they wanted to do in that game.
12:44Well, is that Boston too?
12:45Maybe.
12:46Yeah.
12:47Yeah.
12:47That they were, they were close.
12:48You know, it was, it was, it was their game in a way like, you know, the goalie is supposed
12:53to be one of the strong parts of their team.
12:56So he was and, and will continue to be.
12:59Um, so I think it just really, it sets up kind of how I think a lot of us expected
13:07it
13:07to.
13:08And all that means is that you're probably in for five or six more games, just like Sunday.
13:13I expect, it's not expected hoped, hoped, sure.
13:17You know, really like you give me, you base it on shot attempts and possession stats and
13:23then the, give me the final score.
13:25I'm like, I'll take that game every time game one.
13:28Yeah.
13:29But it was very stressful.
13:30I mean, they, Boston could not be scored on and Lukanen was sort of that Lukanen that's
13:36a little bit all over the place for much of the game.
13:39Didn't engender to me anyway, tons of confidence.
13:41And he's still a question mark, I think going forward in this, but got it done.
13:46He's had a fine season.
13:47Those two breakaway saves on Pasternak.
13:48That's right.
13:49Massive.
13:50That's right.
13:50Massive plays in that game.
13:51Three, three nothing.
13:52I mean, I don't know how much more demoralized the crowd could have gotten than it was already
13:57a two nothing.
13:58Well, actually those breakaways.
14:00It would have made a two.
14:00Yeah.
14:01Those were both in the second period.
14:03Still.
14:03So what, but either way, like it's two nothing in the second instead of it.
14:07It would have been a lot, I think, but.
14:09Well, that's, those are plays.
14:10Would you not agree?
14:11Those are plays where he is right on, right in position.
14:16Yeah.
14:16Like he's not flailing to make those things.
14:19No, no, right.
14:19They're not lucky.
14:20It's pretty straightforward what's happening.
14:21Here comes David Pasternak coming.
14:23And you can even gauge what he may be capable of doing left or right deking shooting based
14:29on pressure coming and whatever.
14:30Those plays are not all created equal.
14:33Right.
14:33The second one, he's kind of forced to go left.
14:35Right.
14:35And then there's a rebound that's also saved.
14:37Yeah.
14:38But yeah, right.
14:39I mean.
14:39Those were huge.
14:40I mean, I, you know, need it be said.
14:42I mean, in, in, in tight playoff games, stopping the best goal scorer of the last five years
14:48in the league twice on breakaways is pretty, pretty big.
14:51So I tweeted after talking about it at length, the screenshot I picked of the Thompson goal
14:58right before he shoots the puck.
15:00And I mean, dozens of takes and I've loved all of it because not everybody's on the same
15:07page with that.
15:08And almost none of us have ever played the game on a level where we would have any ideas
15:12or like, Oh, but he would have scouted Swayman at the Olympics.
15:15Thanks.
15:17How helpful is that?
15:18Maybe it's very, maybe it's irrelevant.
15:20So there was a great wide range of opinions on that goal.
15:23What do you think?
15:24I think one of the first comments, well, I shouldn't say it that way.
15:28One of the only comments I saw from your Twitter feed discussing this goal, uh, I think had
15:35it right away is that there's a defender's stick that is coming in Zdorov, right?
15:41And he's reaching there.
15:44And I think, I think he gets just enough of Thompson's stick to throw the shot off.
15:53I don't think Thompson shoots it where he intended to shoot.
15:55Okay.
15:56I think Zdorov and, and I think Swayman's behavior, I'm, I don't think it makes sense
16:01to lift your leg unless he's thinking, I mean, he's, I think he's got the glove, he's got
16:07the corner covered.
16:08So he should be thinking if he tries to go top shelf, I've got him because like the angle
16:14he's at, he's not getting it over my glove into the corner.
16:16Right.
16:17So I've got that.
16:19And, but from, I'm guessing Swayman is reading Thompson's stick angle, right?
16:25Cause we talked about this.
16:26You can't just wait for the puck to be in the air.
16:28You are looking at hands.
16:30You're looking at the angle of the blade, everything.
16:32All in milliseconds.
16:34It's all just super microprocessor.
16:36And I'm guessing Swayman, his, he lifts his leg because he thinks Thompson is trying to
16:42beat him above the pad under the glove, which is a pretty common place to shoot now on goalies
16:48because goalies are so structured.
16:49They're in the butterfly.
16:51Ostensibly, they should be taking away the bottom of the net where Thompson scores on Swayman.
16:55If they're sealed to the ice in the bottom, I'm in a, I'm going in a butterfly here for
16:59people not watching.
17:01Oh, and how could you not be?
17:02So you're, you're down there.
17:04So how wide are the pads, right?
17:05Five, six inches.
17:06You've got that.
17:07And then the glove is here.
17:08So in between the pad and the glove on both sides is a pretty common place to shoot now.
17:13And I'm guessing he thought that and rather than bring the glove down because he thinks
17:18he's going high.
17:19So I don't want to assume he can't try to pick the corner.
17:22I'm going to lift my leg.
17:24I'm going to lift my leg.
