00:06Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Opening the event, the UN Secretary-General,
00:12Antonio Guterres, urged Member States to take decisive action to protect the rights
00:18of Indigenous peoples and address long-standing challenges facing their communities.
00:25Indigenous peoples are bearers of cultures, knowledge and ways of life that have sustained
00:31humanity for thousands of years. From the Amazon to Australia and Africa to the Arctic,
00:39you are the great guardians of nature, a living library of biodiversity conservation
00:46and champions of climate action. And your participation in global decision-making
00:53has never been more critical. Our world today is roiled by division and discord.
01:00We see conflicts over land and plundering of resources, non-stop environmental degradation,
01:09technologies that accelerate cultural erasure and inequalities that endanger the health and
01:17dignity of millions. And too often, those who did the least to create these problems pay the heaviest
01:24price, especially Indigenous peoples. Experts warn Indigenous communities face deepening health
01:32risks driven by colonial legacies, climate change and growing conflicts. They stress that health is
01:38inseparable from land, environment and sovereignty.
