00:00Today, May 22nd marks International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, with the powerful theme, Acting Locally for Global Impact.
00:11While international summits make headlines, unsung heroes worldwide are fighting global warming every day by protecting and restoring biodiversity in
00:21their own communities.
00:25In Ecuador's Amazon, Varani leader Nemonte Nenquimo made history by leading her community in a landmark legal battle against the
00:35government and oil companies.
00:37In 2019, they successfully protected over half a million acres of pristine rainforest, one of the planet's most vital carbon
00:47sinks preserving biodiversity and blocking destructive drilling.
00:51In Kenya, young activist Elizabeth Panjiru Watuti founded the Green Generation Initiative at just 21 years old.
01:01Through education and hands-on action, she and thousands of youth have already planted over 30,000 native trees, restoring
01:09degraded lands, combating desertification and inspiring the next generation of environmental stairwells.
01:16Along vulnerable coastlines, local fishers and community activists are restoring mangrove forests.
01:23These incredible ecosystems capture carbon up to four times faster than tropical rainforests, shield shorelines from rising seas and storms,
