00:00For me, for my brain, this was actually the fascinating quote of the weekend, and it comes from number 30.
00:08Okay?
00:08Let me read this.
00:10It is a handful of sentences.
00:12It's not that long, but it's more than one sentence.
00:15So let's just see if we can follow along.
00:17It's called a paragraph.
00:17Okay?
00:18Well, actually, in the way that it's written, it's actually three paragraphs.
00:21Oh.
00:21But don't get intimidated.
00:22It's not those kind of paragraphs.
00:24It's like sports writing paragraphs.
00:26Just can you follow along for, right?
00:29Sure.
00:29Okay.
00:30Here we go.
00:31Steph Curry, quote, I've only been in one locker room for the last 17 years.
00:36Before you win the title, you're building the foundation for what a championship team looks like,
00:43even though you have no idea what that really meant.
00:47Then you accomplish it, and then everything else is based off of that.
00:51It's been that way since 2015.
00:53I think we can reshape the narrative.
00:57Knowing in the back of our mind that a title is the ultimate goal, but we have to get back
01:03to the basics of what makes a good basketball team.
01:06A competitive basketball team.
01:09A competitive basketball team every single night.
01:11Realize how hard it is to win in this league.
01:14Can we rethink how we do things with the foundation that we've established?
01:20We don't have to keep saying championship, championship, championship, championship every day.
01:27Even though we've experienced that.
01:30Can we build the foundation again?
01:33End quote.
01:35That, for me, is the middle ground.
01:39That's alignment.
01:41Steph Curry, as usual, has the answer.
01:45Right.
01:46Here's Steve Kerr on the left.
01:47It's all about Steph.
01:49I'll follow Steph anywhere.
01:51Here's Joe Lacob and company on the right.
01:54Hey, we're not on a nostalgia tour.
01:56And then here's Steph creating the middle ground that would allow everybody to stay together.
02:03This doesn't need to be maniacal about championship constantly.
02:07Can we all get together, evolve a little bit, redo the foundation, and just be a good basketball team?
02:15Young guys, old guys, all the guys.
02:17We can, but does that include Steve Kerr?
02:21That, to me, is where, I mean, what he said is exactly right.
02:25They're not going to win a championship again, most likely.
02:28Even if you go out and you add Giannis or LeBron.
02:31Like, LeBron comes in on the minimum, and, you know, you get Al to stay, and you get Chris Stapps
02:36to stay for cheap, and whatever.
02:37All the things that you want to have happen, you win the lottery.
02:41And you get whatever player you want.
02:43DeBansa or whoever you think could actually fit better or best.
02:46If all those things happen, do you go out and you win next year?
02:49Probably not.
02:50Or the year after?
02:52Probably not.
02:52So, what Steph is saying, I think, is the reality of where we are, where he is 38.
02:57He'll be 38 and a half when the year starts, and Jimmy's 37, and, you know, coming off an injury
03:02and all the rest of it.
03:03So, how do you go from where you are now to where you are in five years?
03:07It's by starting to rebuild the foundation.
03:10Exactly right.
03:10And, by the way, there's too much thunder talk.
03:13If you want to talk about the remainder of Steph's career and actual championship contention, I give you one team.
03:21Hell, I give you one person.
03:23How the hell are you beating Victor Wembenyama in the next two to three years?
03:26Tell me.
03:27Explain that to me.
03:28Stop it.
03:29That'd be hard.
03:30It's not the Warriors' problem.
03:31It's everybody's problem.
03:31Right.
03:32It's everybody's problem.
03:34Explain to me how the Nuggets are going to do it.
03:36How the hell is Luka going to do it?
03:37How the hell is Shea going to do it?
03:40Hasn't been able to do it this year.
03:43Like, until I see otherwise, screw the thunder.
03:47The Spurs are the team.
03:48They may not be fully, fully ready, ready yet because they haven't done it yet.
03:52Right.
03:53But they're going to go through their run this year.
03:55It's going to give them all the experience they need and then figure out how to beat them starting next
04:01year.
04:01He's unstoppable.
04:03He is the craziest cyborg I've ever watched with a ball.
04:07Did you watch him last night?
04:09I mean, not since Shaq have we seen somebody so unstoppable.
04:12And, like, Shaq was unstoppable then when the two was better than the three.
04:17We didn't know about the three then.
04:18Yeah, he was unstoppable as long as he was inside of 10 feet from the rim.
04:23Victor can be anywhere on the whole floor.
04:26He's bringing the ball up.
04:28He's 7'6", and he's bringing the ball up.
04:33I just miss me with championships over the next two years unless you're wearing a Spurs jersey.
04:40Right.
04:40Or, I mean, I think Boston has a real chance this year.
04:43I mean, Detroit down 0-1, whatever.
04:45I mean, you never know what could happen as we've seen it.
04:48Sure.
04:48He could get hurt.
04:49He could get hurt.
04:50I get it.
04:50You could get upset or you could have to go into a long series or whatever.
04:53But as far as the Warriors and their chances over the next, what, two years of Steph before Steph turns,
04:58I don't know, 40?
05:00Like, it's not likely.
05:01Even look at the Lakers with LeBron.
05:04Like, LeBron was awesome this weekend, and he looked great.
05:07Incredible.
05:07He's just incredible.
05:08He's just incredible.
05:09But can he do that 16 times in the playoffs and knock off OKC and San Antonio and Boston or
05:16Detroit?
05:17Probably not.
05:17Probably not.
05:18All right.
05:19888-957-957.
05:20We'll play the Draymond thing for you here in just a few.
05:23Marino in the city.
05:24Hi, Marino.
05:25Thanks for calling.
05:26What's up?
05:27You know, I listen to Steinle sometimes, and I love the way he grew up in the East like I
05:32did.
05:33And I was really getting on the Warrior bandwagon in 2017 and 2018, even though I first visited here in
05:421988.
05:43So San Francisco has changed so much.
05:46And you have people under 40 that want to call the Warriors a dynasty.
05:51I'm sorry.
05:51That's not a dynasty.
05:53The Celtics, when nobody appreciated the Celtics, and I was a child, what did they win, 9 out of 11?
06:01So they're not, you know, like, you know, for example, there are no dynasties in baseball anymore.
06:06But, I mean, what's up?
06:08We call the dynasty.
06:09Another one we'll call a mini dynasty.
06:11I even, I'm tempted not to call the Bulls a dynasty.
06:15They won six out of eight, but it was, they haven't been seen since.
06:19All right.
06:20Marino, thanks, man.
06:21I think you're coming from a completely different time on planet Earth, and that's fine.
06:25That's your backdrop.
06:26But the Bulls were a dynasty.
06:28The Warriors were a dynasty.
06:30Right.
06:30I can't really, I can't see that any other way.
06:33I'm sorry.
06:34I mean, yeah.
06:34That's just.
06:359 and 11.
06:36Okay, sure.
06:36Yeah, that was a different world.
06:37What were their, one and a half teams?
06:39Right, exactly.
06:40Like, I mean, we got to be, and that actually, what's interesting about Marino's call is that.
06:46That's where we're at.
06:47And I thought that's what Steph was saying.
06:49You have to learn how to evolve based on what's new.
06:54That's true if you want to assess dynasties.
06:57And it's true if you want to learn how to, you know, score the basketball in 2026 in the NBA.
07:03You can't just sit out of the three-point line and fire away, especially when you are a middle-of
07:07-the-pack shooting team.
07:08And that's what the Warriors were this year.
07:10Right.
07:10And you have to evolve.
07:11And you look at, like, you mentioned San Antonio with Victor Wenbanyama.
07:15Well, those guys don't just shake off of every tree where you get a guy who is 7'6 or
07:197'5 or whatever who can do everything.
07:21But in this day and age, you have to be able to score in different ways.
07:25And the Warriors built their dynasty.
07:26And I apologize to Marino for using that term.
07:29But they built it based on the fact that they did something that no one else was doing.
07:33They did it first.
07:34They did it best.
07:35And nobody else could catch up to what they were doing.
07:38But now everyone does what they do.
07:39So what's the future of the NBA?
07:42Well, the future is, in part, having a guy like Victor Wenbanyama, who is unguardable and phenomenal.
07:48But also, you have to figure out what is going to be the next trend for the NBA to, you
07:53know, try to counteract that.
07:55Let's go to Shaw in Oakland.
07:58Hey, Shaw, what's up?
08:01Hey, what's going on, guys?
08:02How you doing?
08:04I'm good, man.
08:05I see what you're talking about, especially about evolving.
08:09And I think that that's what needs to happen.
08:13And under Kerr's watch, I've seen a lot of things that happen.
08:18But I've seen a lot of mostly good things that happen when he was there.
08:21Well, I mean, when he's there.
08:22Besides all the Durant situation, the Jordan Poole situation, could they have handled it a little bit different?
08:28Yes.
08:29But that's over and done with.
08:30And Draymond still being Draymond, that's another rock in the road.
08:35We know that if we're going to keep dealing with that for one more year or we'll figure something out
08:39with him and his contract and everything.
08:41But at the end of the day, we need to start getting a little bit younger.
08:45We're mixed with some veterans and stuff.
08:47But is that going to occur or Draymond, we don't know.
08:50But they've got to get a little bit longer, a little bit bigger, all the way around.
08:56Steph can't keep playing all these minutes that he's been doing.
08:59His body is starting to break down a little bit.
09:01He's still amazing.
09:02But Father Tom is undefeated.
09:05So you've got to adapt to it.
09:07And that's the whole coaching staff of the Warriors, too.
09:09They need to adapt to certain situations and look around the league and see what they can do without getting
09:13better.
09:14So hopefully Kerr is involved in that.
09:16And if not, well, I mean, I still have faith in Kerr.
09:19I still think he's a good coach.
09:20But if he's not included in this shuffle, hey, man, it's been amazing.
09:26It's been an amazing road trip.
09:27And we'll see what happens.
09:29Sha, thanks.
09:30I think that's all very, very fair.
09:32It's easy for us to talk about, you know, everybody needs to evolve.
09:35And then you go, OK, how?
09:37Like, what is it that you want to see done differently?
09:42What is it that you want to see?
09:43And I mean that about all parties.
09:45Here's where I'll fall back.
09:46And this is where I land on your side with regard to Kerr's future and whether or not he will
09:50or won't be back.
09:52I think Joe Lacob wants him back.
09:54I really do.
09:55And I think Steve Kerr wants to be back.
09:57And we know what Steph Curry and Draymond Green think.
09:59Right.
10:00They've said it publicly.
10:01So when everybody wants a certain thing to be true, the only question then becomes, all right, how do we
10:09go about making that a reality?
10:12And I think all that takes is really an openness to, for instance, what Sha is talking about.
10:18Like, is there an openness to not making the sun, heaven, moon, earth, everything totally 100% revolves around Steph?
10:29And it's not because he doesn't have the talent.
10:31It's because he has runner's knee.
10:35So, like, we've got to – everybody just kind of needs to move to, like – I imagine this sort
10:42of, like, twister.
10:42And you've got all those little circles all over them.
10:46Everybody just needs to move to a new circle.
10:48You don't have to leave.
10:50But, like, Steph has been standing in that center circle for, what, 17 years?
10:56Like, move to the next row.
10:59But who can be that center circle?
11:01This probably isn't going to be right now.
11:03And he's still going to be, quote, unquote, the center circle.
11:07But maybe just not shine so damn bright.
11:10Like, right now he's the entire board.
11:12He is.
11:12But I think the frustrating part is what happened to Jimmy.
11:15Because if Jimmy Butler didn't get hurt, you could at least say that, all right, Steph may not be the
11:20center circle every night.
11:21But you've got Jimmy.
11:22And if Jimmy can play, you know, 65, 70 games as the, you know, number two.
11:28And sometimes he'll be Batman and Robin the other days where, you know, Steph is on the court.
11:33If Steph is out, then Jimmy can be that guy.
11:34But you didn't have that this year.
11:36You had, you know, Malafi Leones.
11:39And you had, you know, you're at seven.
11:41And you had Pat Spencer.
11:42And you had so many games where you didn't have really anybody but Pods.
11:46And that's why I think Pods got a lot of heat that he didn't deserve is the fact that a
11:51lot of times he had to be that center circle.
11:54Let's go out to Nick in Berkeley.
11:55Nick, thank you for calling in.
11:57What's up today?
11:59Man, I don't know what the Warriors are going to do, man, with the likes of Wim Liana and, you
12:03know, whoever, like, you know, like Oklahoma City.
12:06Like, what are you going to do?
12:07I mean, you've got to get, like, three.
12:08You've got to make bold moves.
12:10I mean, you've got to go out there with Lincoln, got to back him up.
12:12And they've got to go get, like, LeBron, and they've got to go get, like, two other players of that
12:17caliber to start with Curry and Draymond if you're going to keep playing Draymond or slide him to the power
12:22forward.
12:23I mean, what are you going to do with Wim Lina except, like, hack him to death, you know what
12:27I'm saying, during the game?
12:28You've got to get physical with Cats.
12:30But the NBA is not.
12:30You can't get physical.
12:31It's not like the old school NBA where Cats would beat each other up.
12:35So, like, you know, they protect the players now a little bit more, but they're not protecting Curry as much
12:39still.
12:40That's why he gets beat up a lot, too.
12:42You know what I mean?
12:42It's like, man, come on, man.
12:43It's one of the greatest players of all time.
12:44You get no respect from the Reds still.
12:46And it's just, like, very frustrating as a fan to see him get tugged on, his jersey tugged on constantly.
12:52I mean, he might as well just get by one of those old tear-off jerseys like Earl Campbell used
12:56to wear.
12:57You know what I'm saying?
12:58But it's just like, man, like, come on, man.
13:00Seriously.
13:01Like, what are the Warriors going to do?
13:03They've got to go out and get some big brand names if they want to keep people in the stands
13:06and keep the excitement.
13:08Is that why they're keeping Curry around?
13:09Just to put people in the stands or are we actually trying to rebuild?
13:12I mean, it's pieces of all of it.
13:14Nick, here's how I, again, just the way I'm thinking, here's how I would respond to it.
13:19When you say, like, oh, what are the Warriors going to do because of Wembenyama?
13:24This is real tough for people now.
13:27Here's what the Warriors need to do.
13:29They need to stop worrying about championships.
13:31Right.
13:32That's not what we're doing right now.
13:34And if you don't believe me, would you like me to read again what Steph said over the weekend?
13:42Quote, we don't have to keep saying championship, championship, championship every day.
13:48Can we build the foundation again?
13:52That's your job.
13:53That's the job.
13:54That's not a rebuild.
13:56That is, can you evolve?
13:58Can you adjust?
13:59Can you bring in some new faces?
14:01Can we start doing things a little bit differently?
14:04He wants to focus on just being a good team.
14:07And I love that idea.
14:09And it is incumbent also then upon us to re-remember 2009 and every year that happened before it when
14:16we weren't sitting there going, you must be a championship contender or we won't come to a game.
14:22That building across the bay was filled every damn night and there was never a thought about a championship.
14:30No.
14:31We celebrated a thing called We Believe because they won a series.
14:34Yes.
14:34And they were an eight that beat a one and I get that.
14:36But even beyond that, you went to Utah and you lost in five and that still is one of the
14:41greatest moments in franchise history.
14:43And if you talk about like building a team, think about San Antonio.
14:47It's not just, oh my God, you won the lottery.
14:49You got Wendman Yama.
14:50And I'm looking at their draft right now.
14:52Back in 2019, they got Keldon Johnson with the 29th pick.
14:56He's still there.
14:57Next year, they got Devin Vassell at 11.
14:59Good player.
14:59They got Joshua Primo in 2021.
15:04In 23, they got Wemby at one.
15:06The next year, they got Kastler at four.
15:08They got Dylan Harper at two.
15:10So, I mean, they did well in the lottery.
15:12They did really well in the lottery.
15:13They won the lottery, but they also got good players around him.
15:16And read their records all of those years.
15:19Awful.
15:20Like they had 22 wins and, you know, 24 wins.
15:23And they had so many years where they were bad.
15:26Six straight years of no playoff.
15:27So, what Steph is saying is not let's be bad, you know, right away.
15:32Let's be bad on three.
15:33One, two, three.
15:34Let's be bad.
15:34But what he's saying is we're probably not going to win championships for the next year or two that I'm
15:39here.
15:39But in the meantime, let's draft.
15:41Let's get better.
15:42Let's build it.
15:43Like Keldon Johnson in 2019, nobody thought then that he would be a part of a team that might win
15:50a title this year.
15:50Seven years later, right?
15:51I just think it's, to me, it's just about thought process.
15:56It doesn't mean, like, don't try to win.
15:59It doesn't mean that you're not allowed to win a championship.
16:01It's just thought process.
16:02And I love what Steph is saying there.
16:04Let's back up, let's breathe, and let's try to be good again.
16:09Start there.
16:10But a lot of Warrior fans in a transitional phase, I feel like, kind of want to walk before you
16:15crawl,
16:16which is how do we beat Wemby next year?
16:19Well, I'm going to raise my hand and say, you won't.
16:23No, don't say that.
16:24But they beat him twice in a row this year.
16:26And then I'm going to tell all the other teams the same thing.
16:30You can't be 7'5 next year.
16:34Or probably ever.
16:35Like, that's my belief.
16:37He's about to go on his run.
16:39That's what I think.
16:41And unless something goes completely haywire with that man, and what we know about the NBA,
16:47which is if you've got that dude, you're probably going to win more often than not.
16:51I think over the next five years, he's going to win more often than not.
16:56And maybe more than five years, because he's still a baby.
16:59And it's definitely going to cover the remainder of Steph Curry and LeBron's careers.
17:04That I know.
17:05So, you know, that's just my opinion.
17:07But that's why I love what Steph is saying here.
17:10Like, yes, there's a way to do this.
17:13And I believe there's a way for Steve Kerr to be the coach and Steph to finish as a warrior
17:17and also sort of adjust your foundation.
17:20Is there a way to win a title?
17:22Not unless a bunch of weirdo stuff happens.
17:24Right.
17:25Right.
17:25You know?
17:26And that's okay.
17:27And this is not 2022 where, you know, Steph would have been, what, 34 at the time?
17:32And Draymond was 32 or 33?
17:34And, you know, Clay and whatever, Jordan Poole.
17:36And you had, you know, Andrew Wiggins on an absolute heater four years prior.
17:40And these guys are all now a lot older.
17:43And I'm just looking at the Spurs.
17:44And you've got De'Aaron Fox is 28 and Johnson 26 and Wemby is 22.
17:50Dylan Harper's 20.
17:51I mean, are you kidding me?
17:52And they're incredible already.
17:54Right.
17:54Stephon Castle, your guy, your man crush.
17:56I love him.
17:57He's 21.
17:5821 years old.
17:59Like, you're looking at a team that is probably not ready to win now, but next year when they're
18:04going to be, you know, having this experience and they're all going to be still in their
18:07early 20s to mid 20s and you're going to have a team of guys in their late 30s.
18:12The only problem they have is the luxury tax and the salary cap.
18:18Well, you know, like, I don't know what the hell they do in three years.
18:22Well, next year, Wemby's only making 16.8.
18:25Exactly.
18:25So you're fine right now.
18:27De'Aaron Fox is making 49.8 next year.
18:30Exactly.
18:30So you're fine right now.
18:31But when you get three years in a row of extension eligible, Wemby, Castle, Harper, have fun with
18:38that.
18:39I mean, I don't know how you do that.
18:41The De'Aaron Fox contract, just looking at it.
18:44Oh, my God.
18:45That thing is an albatross.
18:46Well, good player.
18:47But when's it up?
18:482030.
18:50Oh, it's got that many more years on it?
18:51He's got 49.8, 53.8, 57.8, and 61.7.
18:56That dude's getting traded.
18:58I mean, yes.
18:59In a couple of years, that dude's getting traded.
19:00No, for sure.
19:01But just looking at their money, like, Wemby is still an unbelievable bargain.
19:05Obviously, he's still on his rookie deal.
19:07So they're in their sweet spot.
19:08They're in their window.
19:09And the Warriors are not in their window.
19:12And so, yeah, I mean, even if you want to, like, close your eyes and dream that everything
19:17goes your way this offseason, like, Steph is back, and Draymond takes less, and, you
19:22know, Porzingis takes a minimum, and LeBron comes here, and he plays for Peanuts, and Al,
19:28and De'Anthony, and all the rest of it.
19:29And then everybody's healthy now.
19:31Right.
19:31And everyone's healthy.
19:32You're still maybe the fourth best team in the West.
19:34Yeah, like, you can do some things.
19:36Sure.
19:37You're not as good as OKC, San Antonio, or Denver.
19:40No.
19:40Dude, they lost two fewer games than the Thunder, and all everybody talks about is the Thunder.
19:45I'm like, I don't know if y'all noticed.
19:46The Spurs are here.
19:48It's now.
19:49It's then.
19:51If it's not now, it's next year.
19:53Agreed.
19:54And if they play each other in the conference finals, buckle the bleep up.
19:59Yep.
20:00That's going to be an epic watch.
20:02I think it will be.
20:02Yeah.
20:03And I was actually having this conversation yesterday with somebody right after I was
20:06listening to you and your side piece on our station.
20:09You're going to offend a big, big, strong man now.
20:12He doesn't know where to find me.
20:13Just so you know, I'm nobody's side piece, OK?
20:16I'm the main course.
20:17Go ahead.
20:18In fact, you're the appetizer, and you are the dessert, my friend.
20:21Nah, bro.
20:21We don't need none of that.
20:23We're not trying to do none of that.
20:24I'm sorry, Mr. Salam, but that's the way that goes.
20:27But I was talking to somebody yesterday, and they were saying, ah, the Spurs.
20:30And I said, you kind of have to, like, go through it once before you can actually do
20:34the thing.
20:35Maybe.
20:36I mean, normally you do.
20:37I remember, now I know the Warriors have been to the playoffs the year before, but when
20:41they won their first, I remember feeling like, ooh, that was about a year before I thought
20:45it was going to happen.
20:47Like, it was quick.
20:49Right.
20:49But I know they went through.
20:51I mean, they lost in seven to the Clippers.
20:52Right, right.
20:53Correct.
20:53Correct.
20:54Which.
20:54Round two, right?
20:55Yeah, I mean, losing to the Clippers seems like so 12 years ago, right?
21:00Feels like a dream.
21:03Larry in Berkeley.
21:04Hi, Larry.
21:05Thank you for the call.
21:05What's up?
21:07Hey there.
21:08How are you?
21:09We're good.
21:10Yeah, we got you, man.
21:12Okay, good.
21:13Listen, there's one thing I think you guys may have overlooked, and it's behind Steph's
21:17words.
21:18It's four words, lightning in a bottle.
21:20I think what they think is they can get it, they can capture it.
21:25You know, there were only 18 players that went through the whole season without getting
21:28injured.
21:29Injury is a big part of it.
21:30This team came together, sort of, without Jimmy and Moody.
21:35At the very end of the playoffs, where finally, they had a team that might be able to do something,
21:40but they hadn't played together.
21:41So, when you look at that, and you look at expectations, go back to 2023, that team,
21:48and no way anybody would predict that 2023 team would win a championship.
21:52Or was it 2022?
21:54I forget what year it was.
21:55Yeah, 2022.
21:56But anyway, 2022.
21:58But, you know, in Steph's mind, in Kerr's mind, in all their minds, they know they can
22:03catch lightning and lightning in a bottle.
22:04Does that mean if the cards fall the right way with injuries the way they are?
22:09I was looking at Wemby's play yesterday.
22:11That guy's got, he's got legs that go six feet tall.
22:16They look like toothpicks.
22:18And the energy that he's looking for.
22:21Oh, we lost Larry a little bit there at the end.
22:23Yeah.
22:24I mean, lightning in a bottle.
22:25Okay, sure.
22:26I'll buy that if you're playing the lightning in a bottle game.
22:29Right.
22:29But that's, understand what that is.
22:31That's lightning in a bottle.
22:34That's a lot of hope.
22:35Right.
22:35I mean, that's like every time you buy a lottery ticket.
22:37That's kind of what you're hoping for.
22:39Yep.
22:39That's not a plan.
22:40It's not.
22:41I mean, I hope that's not your plan.
22:43And the bottle might be broken.
22:45And I mean, shout out the weather right now.
22:47There might be lightning today, but in general, there's no lightning.
