00:00I really, this is an exploratory conversation.
00:04Are you interested in what's going on the rest of this season for the Golden State Warriors?
00:09And this is inspired by anybody, because I've had these people in my life,
00:14who over the last especially 24 hours, but hell, we've been talking about this for weeks,
00:19the idea of Steph coming back, and people go, for what?
00:22Why?
00:24It's not like you're going to win a championship.
00:27Is that the only thing that we're doing here?
00:30That's it?
00:32That's it.
00:33It's either championship or, forget championship or bust,
00:38have you all become championship or disinterested?
00:43Is that where we've arrived in sports fandom?
00:46I hope not for your sake.
00:49Not for this team.
00:49I mean, I'm looking at the board tonight.
00:51There are nine games in the association.
00:53Six of them have double-digit point spreads.
00:56Yep, it's that time of year.
00:58Right, but you've got, like, the Bucs.
01:00They're getting 18 and a half at Houston.
01:02You've got all these teams who are clearly like the Grizzlies.
01:05They're not playing anybody, and the Warriors are still out there trying.
01:08So, yes, I'm watching, even though it's no Steph and Jimmy and no Moses
01:13and all the rest of the guys.
01:14Like, Chris Dapps isn't playing and Melton's not playing,
01:16but the Warriors, it'd be great to see them go out there
01:18and give a good effort against San Antonio.
01:21What's the up-to-date number on the Warriors game?
01:2314 and a half.
01:24Up to 14 and a half.
01:25Yeah.
01:25So, yeah, 13 when we talked about it yesterday, up to 14 and a half.
01:28Jazz are getting 17 and a hook at home against Denver.
01:32How do you find the number?
01:34Like, how do you, you know what I mean?
01:3614, 15, 16, 17 and a half.
01:39Like, how?
01:40I don't know.
01:41You're going to get blown out.
01:42Right.
01:43Is what basically we're saying.
01:44But are you going to lose by 16 or 28 or somewhere in between?
01:48I'm so fascinated by it.
01:49It's the computers that generate these, and, I mean, they are so good at it.
01:53Pete and San Ramon, thank you for calling.
01:55Let's take these calls.
01:56Hi, Pete.
01:56Thanks for checking in.
01:58What you got?
01:59Hey, thank you all for taking the call and nice subject.
02:05I got my point and then a point about somebody else I talked to.
02:09My point is, I'm very much interested in these last regular season games.
02:16I'm watching Will Richard, LJ Cryer, D, what people call the others.
02:26I'm watching their development, and I'm really interested in all that.
02:31The second point is, before the last homestand that they ended up with the two wins, and everybody
02:40was all excited, right?
02:41Well, coming into those two games, a couple I know who are 30-year-plus season ticket holders
02:50came in and said, I didn't ask them.
02:55They let off with, man, I don't know if I'm going to renew or not.
02:59What's going on here?
03:01And by the time the second game, the second victory happened, they felt better.
03:09I hope the rest of the season goes well enough, they renew.
03:14So that's what I got today.
03:16Thanks a lot for your time.
03:17All right, Pete.
03:18Thanks.
03:18So wait a minute.
03:19We got a couple that was considering not renewing season tickets, but then they decided we'll
03:23do it because they rallied to beat the Wizards?
03:26Yeah, that sounds about right.
03:27All right.
03:28I mean, whatever you want to do.
03:30Yeah.
03:30Honestly, if you're only going to be a season ticket holder, or you're only going to be interested
03:35if Steph is going to play, then you're not the kind of NBA basketball fan that I am because
03:41I watch them.
03:42I've always watched them because I love basketball, and they're my team.
03:45So even when they were dreadful, when they didn't have anybody worth a hill of beans,
03:50I still would watch because I want the Warriors to do well.
03:53Yep.
03:54Well, it's funny.
03:55To me, it's twofold.
03:56It's that.
03:57But then let's go back to the Steph thing.
04:00What if you are one of these people that's just like, man, you're all about Steph?
04:04Well, if you're all about Steph, don't be fake about it.
04:09Don't say that you want to savor every moment that we've got left.
04:12And then when he's ready to potentially play this Sunday, it's like, no, no, no, no, no,
04:16no, no, no, no.
04:17Don't come back.
04:19You'll ruin everything.
04:21You might hurt yourself.
04:23You might lower the Warriors draft position, whatever it may be.
04:29Like, I'm going to still sit here until I know that it's not the case and think to myself,
04:34there is a path to, and now it's less than two weeks from tonight, there's a path that
04:4213 days from now, the Warriors feel the team that has Steph Curry, Kristaps Porzingis, Al
04:50Horford, Draymond Green, DeAnthony Melton, GP2, Brandon Pajemski, like a squad, a squad
05:01that could go win a road basketball game in a big environment, like a veteran laden team
05:07that could perform.
05:08They've got a shot and they've got a shot.
05:10And so because of that, I'm interested in seeing what goes between now and the play
05:14in game.
05:15And yeah, who can you get healthy?
05:16And what might you be able to do if you're the 10, can you go to Portland and win?
05:20I'm with you because it's sports and a guy who I used to coach out at Drake, he's the
05:26head basketball coach now at Idaho, Idaho goes as a six seed and they win the big sky
05:31out of nowhere.
05:32They're a 15 seed in the tournament.
05:34They drew Houston.
05:35And so you look at that and you think, I mean, they're not going to beat Houston.
05:39This is Houston.
05:40You're Idaho.
05:41But I watched every second and you hope that, you know, maybe a 40 minute miracle can happen
05:46and you can pull it off and they lost by 31 and it probably wasn't that close.
05:50But if you were interested in the story, you watch the game, even though you knew, quote
05:55unquote, how it was going to go.
05:57And it's the same thing with this warrior thing.
05:58Like, can they beat Portland?
06:00Sure.
06:00Can they beat the seven, eight loser in the play?
06:02And sure.
06:03Can they go out and beat OKC or San Antonio?
06:05Sure.
06:06It's probably not that likely, but I'll watch every second of it.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Because it's sports.
06:11I mean, if your mentality is championship or bust, but you mean that in a larger sense,
06:18in other words, even in years when you're maybe not a contender, you're following along
06:24the moves and the maneuvering that's happening so that you can get back to that, that's where
06:29I sit.
06:29I understand that.
06:30But that means that I'm there for the off years, too.
06:34Do you know what I mean?
06:35Yeah.
06:35Like, and this goes for, we could liken this to any sport that we're talking about.
06:41You and I were just joking during the break.
06:42I might, I might have to pull the second TV up tonight during dinner.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Because Wemby is in town and the Warriors have a game, even though they're missing, I
06:50don't know, like the top seven players or something like that.
06:53And, and then meantime, the Sharks have a massive game tonight.
06:59Massive.
07:00They're not winning the cup.
07:03I'm confident in that.
07:04I mean, now they're allowed to, they have a better chance of winning the cup than the
07:08Warriors do of winning the Larry agreed.
07:10But I would argue that they're both, they're dating those two numbers, right?
07:15They're dating, you know, flirting with each other, six, one might be a seven, something
07:20like that.
07:20Oh, you had to go there.
07:21I actually started it.
07:22I think one of them's like a one and the other one's a two.
07:25Yeah.
07:26And actually it might be like one of them's a point one and one of them's a one.
07:29It might be something like that, but so what?
07:32Like the Sharks are a great example of what I'm talking about.
07:36Like get into this thing that is building toward whatever the hell it's going to become.
07:42And it really could become something uber special.
07:46But don't you want to be here now?
07:49They can't, you find some fun in, in, in that.
07:52And right now the goal for the Sharks and the Warriors is actually the exact same thing
07:58with a different pasts, but correct.
08:01I think their presence are make the playoffs, right?
08:04Let's see what happens.
08:06Then when you get there, instead of giving your 38 year old goat, a swing at it, you're
08:09giving your 19 year old prodigy, a swing at it, his first swing versus maybe Steph's
08:15last swing.
08:16So there are so many great parallels.
08:18Sharks only two points out of the final playoff spot and Anaheim, the division leaders, the
08:23team they face tonight at the tank, six o'clock national TV, beat them.
08:28That's right.
08:28Beat them.
08:29And you're in for the moment.
08:31That's right.
08:31Yeah.
08:32They have 10 to go.
08:33So you probably need to win six of them.
08:35Most teams have eight or nine.
08:36They've got the fewest games played in the West.
08:38It's been that way for a while.
08:39So they're going to have more opportunities for points.
08:41Um, Rob in San Jose.
08:43Hi, Rob.
08:44Thank you for calling.
08:45What's going on?
08:47Yeah, you kind of are touching on some of my point.
08:50I'm not that interested in the rest of the warrior season or care.
08:55Will I watch?
08:56Yes, I will watch just because I'm a sports fan and a sports junkie, but I'm like more
09:01interested in the sharks just because I think of one, how the season's going.
09:06Like you're saying where they're at, they're a young up and coming team, young players, not
09:12a lot of ego, no drama, not players mismanaged, no injuries.
09:16I think that in totality of the warriors with Kuminga and the injuries and just Draymond and his antics.
09:24I think there's just a lot that has worn on the fan base to a certain degree and the makeup
09:31of the team around stuff where it's like,
09:34I'm not that interested in the rest of the season.
09:36I'm not title or bust because I'm going to watch the sharks and I'm going to watch the giants and
09:42you have other things going on.
09:43The masters is coming up.
09:45So I'm definitely more clued in to some of the other sporting events and teams than just the warriors, even
09:52though it's the end of the season and it's the stretch run.
09:55You know what I hear in your voice, Rob is, is actual fatigue.
09:59Like that's what, that's what I hear and I get it.
10:02I totally get it.
10:03But like, that's what I hear in your voice.
10:05If you're, if you're in on the sharks and they're very unlikely chances, but you're not in on the warriors
10:12and they're very unlikely chances.
10:14But the reasoning behind it was the sharks feel new to you and the warriors feel stale.
10:20Is that accurate?
10:23A hundred percent.
10:24I think the sharks now where the warriors were at in like 2012, 13, right?
10:28You could kind of see something.
10:30They were young.
10:31They were exciting.
10:32And there's just been a lot that's gone out.
10:34Why have we got scar tissue with the warriors that over these years where it's been these ups and downs
10:39and the drama, whereas the sharks don't have that.
10:42And Oh my God, you know, Mark, if you're a sharks fan, there's a lot of scar tissue from the
10:48losses and good teams that we've had that didn't get it done.
10:51That now it's like, okay, we're kind of back.
10:54We have a chance.
10:55Let's go.
10:56Rob.
10:57Thank you very much.
10:57Appreciate it.
10:58What if I asked it this way, since we just were playful about this year, who's got it.
11:03And I'm not going to say championship.
11:05Listen, the way I phrase it, who's got a better chance to get to the, Hmm.
11:12Should I say conference finals or conference semifinals?
11:15Who's got a better chance to get to the conference semifinals next year?
11:20So just, you're talking about win a series, sharks or warriors, win a series.
11:25Um, I would probably go with the sharks.
11:27Would you?
11:28I would just, you know, what we saw this year from the warriors is I'm afraid what we likely will
11:34see next year from the warriors, which is old guys get hurt.
11:37Could be.
11:37Doesn't mean that they're all going to get this hurt.
11:39And Moses is not old and he got hurt, but that's why when Grandy was talking about easy money going
11:45over 47 and a half wins for the season, I, I kind of bristled because of the chance that these
11:51kinds of things would happen.
11:52And so next year, all your old guys are even older.
11:55Sure.
11:56Sure, sure, sure.
11:57So in terms of your question, that would be the one, the one variable.
12:00We don't even know who's on the team next year.
12:03Well, Steph and Jimmy and Draymond, you know, some of them.
12:06Yeah, I don't know.
12:07Like, I would presume that those three are on there.
12:09Well, and Jimmy for only part of the season, I would presume the same.
12:13I would presume that Will Richard and Brandon Pajemski are on the team.
12:16I think Chris Topps Porzingis is probably going to be on the team.
12:20He's on the team.
12:23If Moses can be back at some point, that's on the table, though seemingly kind of unlikely.
12:29But then there will be others.
12:31Right.
12:31There will be others that we haven't met yet.
12:32And we don't know entirely who will be on the Sharks team, but we do know that their
12:37young core, they're all going to be back and they're all going to be, you know, 19, 20,
12:4221.
12:42And so with a year more experience and more seasoning, yeah, I kind of like their chances
12:47more of winning a series.
12:49And even if you threw the Giants in the mix, too, like, can the Giants go out and win a
12:54series?
12:55They might be even more favored than those other two.
13:00Um, I don't know, but even the fact that you have to think about it is interesting to
13:06me because, again, if they're all kind of in the same neighborhood, then why wouldn't
13:14you sign up for all, if not for fatigue?
13:18And you're allowed to have fatigue.
13:20That's it.
13:20Like, I know there's a lot of people listening to this show who are done with Draymond.
13:24And then there's a lot of people listening to this show who still really like and appreciate
13:29Draymond, both for who he has been and even the some things that he still brings.
13:35You want to know one of the most, I don't want to spoil it too much.
13:37One of the most interesting quotes of that Draymond article in the Anthony Slater piece
13:42came from Steph Curry.
13:44It came from Steph Curry.
13:46And, um, he said, quote, I think Draymond would tell you he's not going to take an average
13:55team and raise their level.
13:58But when it comes to a really good team, he's going to turn them into a championship team.
14:04So there is a conversation and maybe even an argument there with regard to the idea of,
14:10well, um, then should Draymond be a part of this anymore?
14:15Because in this moment, at least, they're not a really good team.
14:19They might, they might get to be one again.
14:22I don't know.
14:23But at their age, maybe not.
14:25But that's, that's part of why Draymond, it's not the only reason I'm not absolving Draymond
14:32of the season.
14:33But that's part of why Draymond looks the way he looks this year.
14:37This is not what he does.
14:39Right.
14:39He is not an elevator of a bunch of young average players.
14:43He's not the kind of guy who goes from averaging eight, eight and five, and your two best scores
14:50are out and suddenly now he's going to go turn it up an average 24.
14:53That's not his game.
14:54And he even said it in the piece.
14:56He talked about how he doesn't run as fast.
14:58He doesn't jump as high.
15:00He doesn't do a lot of things that he used to do.
15:02So now he has to go about things differently.
15:04And when you don't have Steph and you don't have Jimmy, then a lot of times you're not
15:09going to run the screen and roll.
15:10And so Draymond winds up just either in the corner or on the wing, just kind of waiting
15:14for catch and shoot threes.
15:16And he's actually shot it pretty well this year relative to his ability and his career
15:21numbers.
15:21But without those other great players around him, the things that he does so well, they
15:27don't really have the same impact.
15:28Duck sauce, San Jose.
15:30Hey sauce, what you doing?
15:34Hey, good afternoon, guys.
15:35Thanks for taking my call.
15:36Yeah, man.
15:37Yeah, just a couple of things on, you know, I think you kind of asked this question last
15:41week to Willard about, you know, and I don't want to put words in your mouth, but you were
15:44kind of saying that, you know, you did have some fatigue from some of these fans, like
15:49what, you know, with the mentality, whether it's championship or bust and like for the ones
15:53that do mean that literally, I would say, I don't even know why you'd waste your time
15:57even worrying about it because that's like telling you without telling you they ain't
16:02got no hoop IQ.
16:03I mean, anyone who really thinks it works that way, they're not really a basketball fan.
16:07I mean, let's be honest.
16:08Anyone that tells me, you know, you haven't put in the time either playing or learning,
16:12watching the game that you know that it just don't work like that.
16:15So now you did say a few minutes ago that maybe they don't all mean that literally, you
16:20know, they just mean like working towards the championship.
16:22And I get that.
16:23As far as last year, like I would say that was a true definition to me of a puncher's
16:29chance.
16:29Like, you're rolling into the playoffs, you know, the morale was good with Jimmy New.
16:36That's a true puncher's chance right there.
16:38They probably weren't going to win it, but they were playing so well and clicking so well
16:42that they had a shot.
16:43You never know.
16:44So this year, I mean, I mean, I love the Warriors with all my heart, but if I'm being
16:48honest, like I don't know, I don't think they have any chance in hell.
16:51I mean, I just I don't that's too big of a task.
16:55You know what I mean?
16:55But they don't the last which they don't.
16:58Right.
16:58But yeah, I'm still going to watch.
17:00I will watch.
17:01But yeah, I don't know.
17:02I don't believe they're going anywhere in a one game scenario.
17:04Yeah, but not in a not in a seven game.
17:06And then, you know, the last thing I'll say is like everyone has a chance, you know,
17:10everyone has the right to approach fandom however they want.
17:13Like for me, even if my team is not good, yes, I can find other ways to enjoy them.
17:18But I will say right now, like one of my ways is if I if I can cling on to
17:22a young player
17:23that I find exciting and I like his skill set, that's enough for me.
17:27But I will say right now, none of the young Warriors possess that for me.
17:31That's just my opinion.
17:32And I know you guys don't you know, you don't all agree.
17:35Like I've called in about pods before.
17:37I'm not I'm not huge on him.
17:38I know you guys, you know, kind of disagree with that to an extent.
17:41But like I'm already looking at the draft, man.
17:44Like I like that Mullins kid with that shot.
17:47I see some I think Bleacher Report had the Warriors taking him at 11th, you know,
17:50or maybe LeBaron Phylon at 11th from Alabama.
17:53I would love either of those two picks.
17:55So, I mean, that's all I got, guys.
17:57I appreciate the time as always.
17:58Yeah, Doug Sauce, appreciate you.
18:00Thank you, Sauce.
18:01I don't think anybody I've not met anybody who who has latched on to the idea of pods being a
18:08star.
18:09Maybe Joe Lacob.
18:10He's the only one who's made a comment.
18:12Even pods himself has kind of dialed that back a little bit, you know?
18:15Yeah, so like I don't I don't think about it that way.
18:17I think about Brandon Pajemski as like can that be a productive player on your team going forward?
18:22My answer is yes, he already is.
18:24Yeah.
18:24So, but no, I don't I don't I don't foresee stardom.
18:27And and so if you don't want to like if you can't latch on to that because it's not like
18:32visually pleasing to you and you don't see the ha ha and you don't see stardom, then fine.
18:37I totally get that.
18:39Like the the best thing that Duck Sauce just said there, which is completely true.
18:43Everybody gets to enter this however you want.
18:47But that's why I put the question out in as open ended of a way as I can possibly think
18:54of, because I think it's incumbent upon all of us to acknowledge the changes that we've undergone.
19:02Like we should acknowledge that we are a very, very different fan base than we were before Steph Curry arrived
19:11completely, completely.
19:13And so that's fascinating to me.
19:16And I'm not going to lie.
19:18I find it to be at times a little frustrating, a little bit annoying.
19:25It's the nature of life, though.
19:28But I get it.
19:28Exactly.
19:28I get it.
19:29I really do.
19:30And it's what happens.
19:31And you want to go back to the early days of the dynasty.
19:36And you had those yellow shirts that they would give out, the gold shirts and every single solitary human being
19:42in that building was wearing them.
19:43It didn't matter if you had your douchey button up shirt that's one hundred eighty five dollars and you really
19:48wanted to have it.
19:49You put the shirt on because everybody wore the shirt and it was new and it was exciting.
19:54And, you know, the Warriors were one and there was Warriors chance and Roracle and all the rest of it.
19:59And as you go through and it becomes kind of old hat.
20:02OK, we're good.
20:03We win again.
20:04It's still fun.
20:05But you go now.
20:06And if they do have a play in game here and they give out those shirts, you're going to have
20:10about a 70 percent.
20:12I'm putting the shirt on percentage.
20:14And that's just because people have gotten a little bit fatigued of the experience.
20:18It's just human nature.
