00:01Lindy Ruff, he's been through it.
00:04A lot of his team has not.
00:06A lot of you have not.
00:10Buckle up.
00:13Game one.
00:15Off the charts energy and drama and tension.
00:19All right, now we have today.
00:21Guess what?
00:22Tomorrow, let's go again.
00:24That's the, again, the drumbeat of it all
00:27that is both super satisfying and riveting
00:32but also like a little bit,
00:34man, I'd like to have a couple more days with last night
00:37that I don't get because game two is tomorrow
00:41and whatever happens, then that'll be the thing
00:43that we maybe, as Lindy put it,
00:46about some of his players might lose sleep over.
00:49Whatever.
00:51Welcome, to say the absolute very least,
00:53a welcome return to our lives.
00:57The Sabres being in the playoffs.
00:59What a night.
01:01803-0550 for your calls.
01:03I'm Mike Shope.
01:03Thanks for listening.
01:04Bulldog is here tomorrow, but not today.
01:07We will talk to Paul Hamilton at four,
01:09see what today sounded like,
01:11and then Sal Capaccio later.
01:14The Bills did some media,
01:16and the draft is Thursday night.
01:17Draft is this weekend, as you probably know.
01:19I'm saying it like maybe you don't,
01:20but you probably do.
01:22Here's Kevin with us.
01:23Hi, Kevin.
01:24Shope, what up, man?
01:25How you doing?
01:26Hi, good.
01:27First of all, welcome to Sabres for the playoffs.
01:30But last night, that game,
01:32that game kind of like,
01:34it almost loved you to sleep,
01:36because we had those power play goals.
01:38We didn't really get any shots.
01:39We really weren't doing anything.
01:42But what kind of struck me was,
01:45when Gelke, or Genki, whatever his name is,
01:48when he missed that wide open goal,
01:51I think something snapped in these guys,
01:53and they were like,
01:54let's get this thing going,
01:55because all of a sudden, man,
01:57I'm thinking like that three-minute span,
01:59boom, boom, boom, boom, three goals.
02:02I'm like, where was this at all night?
02:04Because normally the Sabres are up and down the ice,
02:07up and down, you know,
02:08they got some stuff going on.
02:09So it kind of reminded me of that 8-7 game,
02:13where they were going back and forth,
02:15going back and forth.
02:16But if this, if last night's game,
02:18it's going to be indicative to what this series is going to be,
02:22this is going to be a hell of a series.
02:23I'm looking forward to it, man.
02:25I'll shut up and listen to what you got to say.
02:28Go Sabres, baby.
02:29Okay, Kevin.
02:30I mean, I can't.
02:31I'm not that guy anyway,
02:33but I can't buy into the geeky miss at the end of the second
02:38meant anything to their emotions,
02:40other than what was already evident.
02:42I mean, it was 12 minutes before they scored the first goal,
02:46and both goals were Thompson specials.
02:48You know, they were fine,
02:50except for the score of the game.
02:52Like, they were fine most of the night,
02:54but needed their best, by far, goal scorer to create for them,
03:00and he did.
03:01So, I mean, they were very lucky.
03:03Lukanen was in more ways than one on that miss at the end of two,
03:08just because, like, the shot was there,
03:10and then the puck still goes through him
03:13and doesn't go in,
03:15and nobody's there to,
03:16man, that would have been a real crusher
03:17to give up that goal at the end of the second.
03:20So, I mean, I don't know.
03:22You know, a lot of you are different than I am.
03:25You might know how I think.
03:26I just think you jump over the boards,
03:28and you go do your job.
03:30And I don't think most of the time
03:32the score or the conditions of the game
03:34or whatever you want, however you want to put it,
03:36really affect that.
03:37I mean, I can't tell you that I played,
03:39so you don't have to believe me,
03:41because hockey players tend to talk like it does happen,
03:44except that it's almost never provable.
03:47Here's CJ next.
03:48Hi, CJ.
03:49Hey, Mike, good afternoon.
03:50You know, the vibes last night were different,
03:53but in a great way.
03:54So before they did, you know,
03:55the whole saber tooth coming down from the rafters
03:57and the Goo Goo Dolls nostalgia video
04:00and Mrs. Jennerette banging the drum,
04:02that was all fantastic.
04:03But it's pregame warmup.
04:05It's 7 o'clock.
04:06And usually pregame warmup,
04:07you know, the guys are shooting pucks around.
04:09They're throwing pucks over the glass
04:10to fans and stuff.
04:12It wasn't like that.
04:13Like, these guys were dialed in.
04:14They were honed in.
04:15They were getting pucks on net.
04:16But then, as the Sabres got off the ice,
04:19Yornis Corpuselo, the backup going for the Bruins,
04:21was kind of milking it a little bit.
04:23And he was shooting pucks on the far end of the net.
04:25And everyone in the arena was just booing the heck out of him
04:27before he got off the ice because he was the last guy on.
04:30And it's just people were just locked in
04:3135 minutes before a puck drop.
04:34So that was different.
04:35And then just one quick aside, too.
04:37My dad passed away about 11 years ago now.
04:40So he was not able to see the Sabres make the playoffs
04:43since that happened.
04:44So I met my wife 10 years ago.
04:47She's from southwest Ohio, not a big hockey area.
04:50Took her to her first Sabres playoff game last night.
04:53And, like, the intensity of the hitting
04:55and, like, once we broke through with the first page goal,
04:58I mean, she was just in amazement about what the arena was like
05:02because we used to go to Sabres games for $10 to do something cheap
05:05and enjoy it, you know.
05:06But now it's spending big money for a team that they deserve,
05:10you know, a packed crowd.
05:11And it was awesome last night.
05:13It was great.
05:13Yeah.
05:14Well, really cool for you that you got to be there with her.
05:17A friend of mine just texted me about Corpo Salo.
05:20I didn't even know about it.
05:21But just in the last commercial break, he texted me that,
05:24do you know what happened with the backup goalie of the Bruins?
05:27I'm like, no.
05:28And he told me, and you already have said it here,
05:31and he said, I've never heard louder booing than for that guy.
05:37Why poke the bear?
05:38I don't know.
05:39Again, it was 2-0 Boston late,
05:41so maybe it really didn't have that much of an effect.
05:44But, you know, still, we'll see if he's up to the same shenanigans tomorrow.
05:50Thanks, CJ.
05:51Tony is next.
05:51Hi, Tony.
05:54Hey, good afternoon.
05:55Hi.
05:55First off, congrats.
05:56It's huge when electric, unfortunately, can't afford to be there.
06:01But, listen, I think we need to pump the brakes.
06:05Last by checks, it requires, I don't know, is it 16 games to win the Stanley Cup?
06:10We need to be excited, but we need to pump the brakes.
06:14Why?
06:15Coming from southern Ontario, there's a hockey team.
06:19Why do you and I need to do that?
06:21Well, I think the Sabre Nation needs to do it.
06:25Why?
06:26There's this franchise that, you know, as I said, I live north.
06:29I know you're going to talk about the Leafs,
06:31but I still don't understand why anybody needs to relax.
06:34Well, wait a second.
06:35We haven't won anything yet.
06:37Everybody knows that.
06:38The Toronto Maple Leafs are infamous for celebrating against the Boston Bruins,
06:43and how's it turned out for them for the last 60 years?
06:47Because they what?
06:48Because they got too excited?
06:50Because fans cared?
06:51That's why they lost?
06:53Well, I don't know.
06:54You listen to lots of reasons.
06:56What's your point?
06:58The point is we haven't won anything yet.
07:00Everybody knows that.
07:02We won one game.
07:03You sure about that?
07:04Yes.
07:05Nobody follows the NHL and is confused about what the standings say.
07:09Nobody.
07:11And nobody's confused that it requires 16 wins to drink out of the family cup,
07:15correct?
07:16Yes.
07:17Good.
07:17Well, listen, I hope it continues.
07:20It would be a great story if we can find 15 more wins.
07:24Thanks for taking my call.
07:26Of course.
07:26Yeah.
07:27Who doesn't love that guy in life, right?
07:33Is he there for anything that you enjoy,
07:35to tell you that you shouldn't enjoy it, or just this?
07:38I like, he's going to preach to me about the Leafs.
07:41Is that guy possibly driving around thinking that the fans are the reason
07:45the Leafs don't win?
07:47Is anybody?
07:49Is it our fault that the Sabres haven't won?
07:52You're not allowed to be excited today?
07:54Oh, please, explain the playoffs to me.
07:56So wait a minute.
07:57Let me get my notebook.
08:0016, how do you do the math on that?
08:02It's four rounds, and then, yeah, I guess that probably checks.
08:07Screw that.
08:11This city, I mean, thanks for the sermon.
08:16It doesn't even need to be said.
08:19All that I'm thinking about saying right now does not need to be said.
08:23You wait 15 years for a playoff game,
08:27and you sound to that guy like you think you just won the cup?
08:31Is that true?
08:33Is that how I sound?
08:34Is that how CJ sounds and Kevin sounds who called in?
08:38Is that how other people who have called the station today sound?
08:41How do you even measure that?
08:43I'll tell you how I think I sound.
08:45They're up 1-0 in the first round.
08:48And on top of that, they just, we just enjoyed, they just provided.
08:56I mean, I think it has a chance to be, like, an all-time great game experience for people.
09:02They have to win the series, not the cup.
09:05They have to win the series for the game to, like, like I just talked with Adam Krautwurst about it,
09:10a different example, for the game to sort of hold up.
09:13Otherwise, like, that's kind of a thing that's a little bit morbid,
09:16but you could sit around with your friends at a bar trying to remember great Sabres highlights in series they
09:21lost.
09:22I just, I mean, I'm not sure I'd recommend this.
09:25I'm not sure if it's cathartic or whatever.
09:27Nobody's confused.
09:29And not one sane person thinks Toronto hasn't won a cup because of the fans.
09:34Like, just, you're insane if you think that.
09:36I don't think the guy really did.
09:37He just wanted to, you know, lecture me on, and all of us, of course, too, on how this really
09:43works.
09:44Get out of here.
09:46How about somebody from Toronto trying to tell us this story?
09:51Get out of here.
09:53I think you're jealous.
09:54I think the Sabres just did a thing that you are missing because the Leafs are not in the playoffs.
10:01And, unfortunately, we don't want this.
10:03You wouldn't want this on anybody.
10:04But when you go this long before even getting back into the tournament,
10:08I mean, of course it's going to be more intense.
10:10Of course it's going to be more exciting and all of that.
10:13That's just how it is.
10:15That's just human nature.
10:16I mean, of course we're going to be this.
10:20This heightened pitch about them.
10:23I mean, just, who doesn't love that guy in life?
10:27Actually, you shouldn't be happy, Mike, everyone.
10:32You should sound like you know your history.
10:34I do know my history.
10:35If I didn't, maybe I'd have to listen to that.
10:39Here's Steve next.
10:40Hi, Steve.
10:41How we doing?
10:42Okay.
10:43So, first of all, don't ever take that guy's call again.
10:47Well, it's not up to me.
10:48It's not up to me.
10:49Second of all, if he knows the Sabres in Buffalo so well,
10:53he knows the Buffalo fan base.
10:55That's who we are.
10:56It's what we do.
10:58We rally around one win and then look forward to the next one.
11:02We celebrate it.
11:03We accept it.
11:04And, yeah, tomorrow night we'll move on.
11:07So what if you don't?
11:09What's that?
11:10So what if you don't?
11:11Fine if you don't.
11:11I mean, it's...
11:12Right.
11:13But for him to come out here and say that, oh, it's only one game.
11:16We understand it's one game.
11:17We're well aware it's one game.
11:18I'm pretty...
11:19I think you have a pretty good handle on the format.
11:21Absolutely.
11:22It's just...
11:23As soon as that guy started talking and said that, my blood immediately started boiling.
11:27I'm like, does this guy know who the Buffalo fan base is?
11:31Well, you know...
11:32That's who we are.
11:32Thanks, Steve.
11:33I mean, it's...
11:36What more needs to be said here?
11:37It's any fan base.
11:38Like, it's just...
11:39It's okay to be happy.
11:43I find in life, if you can be happy, you should revel in it.
11:47And not think about the bills you can't afford to pay or just, like, other stress points in your life.
11:53Find something that makes you happy and stay there.
11:56Or just listen to Tony, who calls a radio show and says nobody should be happy.
12:00Here's Ryan next.
12:01Hi, Ryan.
12:02Hey, good afternoon, guys.
12:04I'm going to jump in and join the other callers.
12:06It's like, screw that guy.
12:08I mean, we've went 15 years of not being able to celebrate.
12:12We should be celebrating today, buzzing.
12:15Just what an awesome game that was.
12:18And, of course, if you follow hockey and have any understanding of what it's going to be to be a
12:23Stanley Cup winner,
12:24yeah, you need 16 wins.
12:25And hopefully we can do that.
12:27And what an amazing thing that would be.
12:29But we should be happy today because we've had 15 years of not being happy.
12:34And maybe this sets the tone for the rest of the series and maybe the playoffs.
12:39But, yeah, party it up and just celebrate because it was just such an awesome night.
12:45Awesome game.
12:46It really was.
12:47Thanks, Ryan.
12:48Another thing that just does not need to be said despite the previous caller's confusion.
12:53The players and the fans are not the same thing.
12:56Okay?
12:57Like, fans being excited, there is no harm in that.
13:00There is no reason to spank anybody for being excited, clearly.
13:04The players, do you think the players think they just won the Cup?
13:08I would never say that.
13:11I think I'm somebody who didn't mind that the Sabres didn't walk into the playoffs with more experience.
13:16They're professionals.
13:18They'll be fine.
13:19And I think they were.
13:21I don't think Morgan Geeky's miss got them going.
13:25I think they were going.
13:26They just didn't score until they did.
13:29It was a great night.
13:30The players and the fans.
13:31I mean, listen, now I'm the guy who being like, you guys know what you don't know?
13:35That's not the same thing.
13:37The fans, as much as we might sometimes like to think so, do not have much importance in this.
13:43It's awesome to watch and experience, and last night was unbelievable in how long, I mean, pent-up energy, how
13:52long we've been waiting for this.
13:54And then the season was the season, and last night still topped it.
14:00803-0550, thanks for your calls.
14:02We have Paul Hamilton coming up with the latest.
