00:25Oh, esto es en español, ok
00:28¿Quieres que me diga en español?
00:31Ok, no voy a hablar en español
00:34Muchas gracias, Shalia
00:35¿Cómo estás en España?
00:37Estoy bien, estoy bien
00:38He estado aquí varias veces
00:39He estado cerca de aquí
00:42Creo que está en Alcobendas
00:44Sí, en el campo de entrenamiento
00:46Hace varios años
00:47Así que hemos estado aquí varias veces
00:50Quiero preguntarte
00:51¿Qué ha cambiado entre
00:54la joven chica que iba a ir a Beijing
00:56a la leyenda?
00:58Creo que es realmente
01:00poder advocar para mí
01:01y saber quién soy
01:03y ser confiante
01:05Creo que fueron los cambios
01:08para mí y la evolución
01:10es lo que pasó
01:10pero cuando era joven
01:11yo estaba muy seguro
01:13de quién era
01:14lo que quería lograr
01:16en el campo
01:16yo estaba solo
01:18y cuando era joven
01:20me empecé
01:21me empecé
01:21intentando
01:25maximizar
01:26los objetivos
01:27y mi potencial
01:28y me empecé
01:29y me empecé
01:29y me empecé
01:30que tenía mucho más
01:30para dar
01:31así que creo que
01:32es realmente
01:33el cambio
01:33poder adaptar
01:35en diferentes
01:35ocasiones
01:36de mi carrera
01:37¿Cómo se ha pasado?
01:39¿Qué haces ahora?
01:40¿Qué haces ahora?
01:41¿Qué es tu futuro?
01:43Realmente
01:43creo que
01:44cuando se pasó
01:45estaba bien
01:46y me empecé
01:48y luego
01:49me empecé a llorar
01:50y me empecé a ir a la carrera
01:51y me empecé
01:52una mañana
01:53y me empecé
01:53y me empecé
01:54y me empecé
01:54y me empecé
01:55a la carrera
01:56y me empecé
01:56y me empecé
01:58pero también
02:00me empecé
02:01y me empecé
02:04a mucho tiempo
02:06con mi hijo
02:07que juega
02:08en casa
02:09y me empecé
02:10a todas las sessões
02:11de la semana
02:12y a todas las torneas
02:15que puedes pensar
02:15sobre
02:16lo que ha sido
02:18muy acelerado
02:19para mí
02:19es realmente zoning in on the Pocket Rocket Foundation,
02:22which is my charity,
02:24y amplifying the voices for those who don't have that voice
02:28and giving student-athletes the platform
02:31to celebrate who they are
02:34and to focus on putting together their sport
02:38and their education and balancing both
02:40to create lasting change.
02:41So I've been able to really use my experience
02:44and leverage that skill and advocate for student-athletes
02:48and also just finding time from a business standpoint
02:51with Afemi, building up my portfolio,
02:54becoming an owner, investing in ideas,
02:57investing in my own ideas
02:58and having that time to really just transition
03:02to the next phase.
03:03So I see you're not bored at all.
03:05No, I'm not bored, not at all.
03:07And looking back to your career,
03:09the biggest challenge was physical or mental?
03:13I think I would like to say both.
03:16You know, both were challenging
03:18because I think when I just started,
03:21it was more the mental part of it,
03:24like, you know, just not knowing who I was
03:26or being, feeling like I didn't belong in a space
03:30and that was hard for me,
03:32especially coming from Waterhouse.
03:35So for me, the idea of a young girl from an inner city
03:38becoming an Olympic champion or a world champion
03:40was hard to even think about
03:42because I didn't have a lot of those,
03:44you know, influences around me.
03:47So it was hard to kind of accept that.
03:49And I think as I got older,
03:51I kind of started to, you know,
03:53step into that zone
03:54and saying to myself,
03:55I deserve to be here.
03:56I deserve to...
03:57When did you start to believe that?
03:59I think I started believing that
04:01after I won my Olympics medal in 2008
04:04because I remember
04:05I really just wanted to be in the finals.
04:09I kid you not,
04:10that was the goal,
04:11to make it to the finals,
04:12nothing else.
04:13Okay.
04:13Right?
04:14And I think walking away
04:15with that gold medal
04:16kind of gave me the inspiration
04:18to dream higher and bigger.
04:20And I was like,
04:21okay, now I'm going to say what I want
04:23and mean it
04:24because saying it actually makes it real.
04:26And I think for a lot of people,
04:28they think saying it gives it,
04:29makes them,
04:30you know,
04:30puts a huge burden on them,
04:32but actually it doesn't,
04:33it just means that you're confident
04:35about what you want to achieve
04:36and the things you want to achieve.
04:38What's the biggest highlight of your career?
04:40I think the biggest highlight for me is
04:44having my son
04:45and coming back after having my son.
04:47I think for us as,
04:49for me as a female athlete,
04:50I've never heard a lot of it.
04:53You've always heard conversations
04:55about people saying,
04:56oh, don't have a kid yet
04:58or wait until you finish your career
05:00because somehow tracks having a son
05:04or having a child slows you down
05:06or it takes away from your career.
05:08And that's something that I grew up hearing
05:10because the reality is
05:11my mom got pregnant with my brother
05:13when she was young
05:14and she was doing track
05:15and she didn't get to do it anymore.
05:18She actually stopped
05:19when she had my brother.
05:21And then for a lot of young girls
05:23in my communities
05:23and in Jamaica,
05:24when they had a kid,
05:26they stopped going to school
05:27because they somehow felt like
05:29they could only do one thing at a time.
05:31And I think for me that's been the highlight,
05:34really just setting that narrative
05:36and having that conversation
05:37that it's okay to want both things
05:39and to have both things
05:40and to do well at both things.
05:41So I think, you know,
05:42walking away with my World Championship medal
05:45in 2019 after having my son
05:47was the highlight for my career.
05:49Has there been any secret
05:51for your longevity?
05:53Secret for the longevity?
05:54No, you can tell.
05:57There's no real secret.
05:58It's just really adapting
05:59to the season that you're in
06:00and learning your body,
06:02knowing who you are,
06:03knowing where you are in your career
06:05and kind of, you know,
06:07holding on to that.
06:08The athlete you are at 21
06:09is not the athlete you are in your 30s.
06:11And you have to learn
06:12and know your body,
06:14know what you want
06:15and kind of, you know,
06:17fix those things
06:17and adapt to those things.
06:19And I think that's the highlight for me
06:21is that at every different juncture
06:24of my career,
06:24I kind of know what place I was in
06:26and I kind of leaned to that
06:28and tapped into that.
06:29So I think those things
06:30are very important
06:31is that you have to just know
06:33who you are,
06:34know what you're chasing,
06:35know that the athlete
06:36that you are in your 20s
06:38is not the athlete
06:39that you will be in your 30s.
06:40And you will have to make changes
06:42and be honest with yourself
06:44and open to know that,
06:45hey, I need to revamp this
06:46or I need to change this.
06:48So honesty is really important
06:49as a part of, you know,
06:50your career choice.
06:52And be inside those changes
06:54in an Olympic final
06:55that the differences are tiny.
06:57Yeah.
06:59Do you can make that difference
07:00with some changes
07:02or it's also mental?
07:04It's, it's, it's,
07:05I would like to say mental
07:07more than anything else
07:08because you have been working
07:11or training for an entire year
07:13for that moment
07:13and you have been running races.
07:15For me, it's,
07:17you have to know
07:18what is your peak performance.
07:20You have to know
07:21what you need to do
07:22in each race
07:23and you can't forget it.
07:24You can't allow the moment
07:26to let you forget it
07:27because sometimes that happens.
07:29You get into a race
07:30and the race itself
07:31becomes the moment
07:32instead of you focusing
07:33on what gets you
07:34to that line.
07:36You know,
07:36the execution,
07:37focusing on what it is
07:38that you will need to do
07:39as an athlete
07:39to get to that line.
07:40Not what the person
07:42will do in lane one,
07:43not what the person
07:43will do in lane two
07:44because the reality is
07:45you cannot control
07:47what anybody else does.
07:48You have to control
07:49your thoughts,
07:50what it is that you want
07:51and I've always said
07:53you can't make it easy
07:54for anyone else.
07:56The reality is
07:57I'm standing at the line,
07:58I have to focus
07:59on what it is
08:00I need to do
08:01to get to the finish.
08:02I can't be focusing
08:02on what you are doing
08:03because that's not
08:05going to help me.
08:05That's counterproductive.
08:06So the reality is
08:07I think in a race
08:09and on Olympic finals
08:10it's a lot more mental
08:11than it is physical.
08:12It's what you tell yourself
08:14the minute
08:14or the moment
08:15the starter says
08:16on your mark.
08:17It's what you tell yourself
08:18in a warm-up track.
08:19What do you tell yourself
08:20during the course
08:22of the races?
08:24You know,
08:25can I just one more?
08:26One more,
08:26last one.
08:27Last one.
08:27Thank you.
08:28You know better
08:29than anyone
08:30how does it taste
08:32the wind?
08:33Is it,
08:34did it become
08:35an addiction
08:36for you
08:36at any point
08:37of your career?
08:38For you?
08:39Winning?
08:40Win?
08:41I love to win.
08:43Yeah,
08:43who doesn't?
08:44Right?
08:45I think
08:45winning is almost
08:47like
08:47it's the confirmation
08:49that the work
08:50that I've put in
08:51has materialized.
08:53It's almost
08:54like the moment
08:55you say
08:55okay,
08:56I did it.
08:57I earned this
08:58and it's the moment
09:00you start to believe
09:01that all those
09:01sweat,
09:02the tears,
09:03everything
09:03that you've been
09:04able to work
09:06through
09:06over the course
09:07of your season
09:08has finally
09:09paid off.
09:10So I think
09:10it can be
09:11addicting
09:11but then you
09:12win at different
09:12stages
09:13and at different
09:14things
09:14and winning
09:15for me
09:16may look
09:17different
09:17from somebody
09:18else.
09:18Somebody else
09:19win may mean
09:20just making
09:21the finals.
09:21Somebody else
09:22win may mean
09:22I had a hard
09:23year this year
09:24I just want
09:25to make it
09:25to the finals.
09:26I just want
09:26to have a
09:26personal best
09:27because the
09:28reality in races
09:29you have people
09:30who have run
09:30their best race
09:32ever and they
09:33still walk away
09:33without a medal
09:34but that's
09:35a win
09:35for them.
09:36So winning
09:36looks different
09:37for everybody.
09:38Thank you so much.
10:04Thank you so much.
