00:00:14Okay, Mom, my mom's gonna put her camera away now, guys.
00:00:18Sorry, one sec.
00:00:25Here we go!
00:00:26Here we go!
00:00:28Blue and yellow!
00:00:30Who's blue and yellow?
00:00:33I really appreciate the Ryder Cup
00:00:35and everything it means, and
00:00:36I think it has brought a certain amount of
00:00:38intrigue to the entire season.
00:00:41What do you do here? What kind of stage
00:00:42like Dutch ball?
00:00:48The Ryder Cup is the most intense
00:00:50feeling we get in golf
00:00:53by miles.
00:00:59We're gonna go into the first row
00:01:01and make my guy up there, man.
00:01:04We're gonna start in the second row.
00:01:06There's just something different to it.
00:01:08It just always creates
00:01:09so much drama.
00:01:12U.S.A.
00:01:15I don't know if I could have dreamed
00:01:17of ever actually being at the Ryder Cup
00:01:19and I'm ready to show the world
00:01:20and the country what I've got.
00:01:23We're friends all year until the Ryder Cup.
00:01:26And it's, you know, Europeans on one side
00:01:28and Americans on the other.
00:01:30It's kind of weird in a way.
00:01:34I guess you could compare it to, like,
00:01:36maybe MMA fighting or something.
00:01:37It's kind of weird.
00:01:39What is happening?
00:01:42Please welcome to the stage
00:01:44your 2025
00:01:45European Ryder Cup team.
00:01:53And ready to take back the Ryder Cup.
00:01:56Please welcome to the stage
00:01:59the 2025
00:02:00United States
00:02:01Ryder Cup team.
00:02:09We are playing for something
00:02:10far greater than ourselves.
00:02:14It's about pride
00:02:15and the legacy you leave behind.
00:02:24We are on a quest to reclaim the Ryder Cup.
00:02:27Jeff Page Black is known as
00:02:29the People's Country Club.
00:02:33It's been called New York's home course.
00:02:37This week, with your passion,
00:02:40you're gonna make it America's home course.
00:02:42Thank you. Go USA!
00:02:45It just feels a little bit different
00:02:46being in New York.
00:02:49Those New York fans,
00:02:50they want us to win
00:02:51more than anyone.
00:02:52They're very passionate.
00:02:54Bring it home, boys!
00:02:55It's like they don't have, um,
00:02:57a filter.
00:02:57A haircut coming!
00:02:59A haircut coming!
00:03:00A haircut coming!
00:03:04It's very intense.
00:03:06There's a lot of pressure.
00:03:08You have 50,000 people cheering for you
00:03:11or you have 50,000 people
00:03:12cheering against you.
00:03:14Let's go!
00:03:15It's just...
00:03:16It's hard.
00:03:18Emotion is involved in every shot.
00:03:22Every hole.
00:03:24It's gonna be huge.
00:03:26It's gonna be the mother
00:03:26of all Ryder Cups.
00:03:28Everything they've worked for
00:03:30in their life
00:03:30has led to this moment.
00:03:44Great to be in a New York state of mind.
00:03:47A new dawn breaks.
00:03:48Not a battlefield unlike any other.
00:03:51Beth Page Black.
00:03:53Come Sunday, it will set
00:03:54with only one of two destinies complete.
00:03:58Welcome to the 45th Ryder Cup.
00:04:11Beth Page Black.
00:04:12It's really breathtaking.
00:04:15It's really, like, stunning.
00:04:18You get a real sense
00:04:19of the grand stage
00:04:21that this is gonna be.
00:04:22So quiet right now.
00:04:26There's so much anticipation.
00:04:29It's really exciting
00:04:30to kind of be on the grounds
00:04:31and start to feel like
00:04:32it's kind of coming to reality.
00:04:35Come around me here
00:04:36so I can talk to all of you.
00:04:38Fellas.
00:04:39We are gonna be relentless competitors
00:04:41on this golf course.
00:04:42Out there, that is our arena.
00:04:45This is the best team
00:04:47on the planet right now.
00:04:50And we're gonna carry ourselves that way.
00:04:51We're gonna be cocky.
00:04:52We're gonna be confident.
00:04:54This is our time.
00:04:57I want everybody at this moment
00:04:59to remember what happened at Rome.
00:05:00Put your hands together
00:05:01for the winners of the 2023
00:05:05Ryder Cup, Team United!
00:05:11The U.S. is coming off a really humiliating defeat
00:05:13in Rome a couple years ago.
00:05:16And these are prideful guys.
00:05:17These are the best players in the world.
00:05:19The last thing they want to do
00:05:20is lose again,
00:05:21and have to wait another two years,
00:05:23and to lose at home.
00:05:24We have an opportunity
00:05:25to play that same team this week.
00:05:28They come into this arena,
00:05:30they have nowhere to run,
00:05:32nowhere to hide.
00:05:33Okay?
00:05:34Everybody in here.
00:05:36This week,
00:05:38this is our home course.
00:05:39This week,
00:05:40this is the course we grew up on.
00:05:43USA on three.
00:05:44I love everybody.
00:05:45One, two, three.
00:05:46USA!
00:05:46USA!
00:06:13Are we wearing hats or no hats?
00:06:15Uh, you know what?
00:06:16I just don't know.
00:06:18I think they do stuff perhaps.
00:06:20We're on dryers.
00:06:21We got the same size.
00:06:23We got the same size.
00:06:26When you've won a Ryder Cup,
00:06:28like, you never want to not win a Ryder Cup.
00:06:33We have 11 of the same 12 guys
00:06:36that we had in the last Ryder Cup.
00:06:39We have a WhatsApp group still from Rome.
00:06:42I think it's going to be a huge advantage
00:06:44to have that continuity
00:06:46and to have, obviously,
00:06:47a repeat captain as well.
00:06:48New York subway kind of vibes.
00:06:51That you haven't made?
00:06:52Yeah.
00:06:53I just told them,
00:06:54make me something cool.
00:06:56That's what they came up with.
00:07:01I'm so proud that I've played
00:07:03four Ryder Cups.
00:07:04I just go into them trying to be the best teammate I could be.
00:07:08What would make me the happiest about it all,
00:07:11aside from the team winning,
00:07:13is if, you know,
00:07:14one of my teammates got asked a question
00:07:15and they would say, you know,
00:07:16Tommy was, you know,
00:07:17the best teammate that you could imagine.
00:07:21I don't like talking about myself that much,
00:07:23but, like,
00:07:25I think I bring, like,
00:07:26a lot of glue to the whole team.
00:07:28And people laugh at me,
00:07:29like, I'm always in the team room.
00:07:30I'm always last to bed.
00:07:31I'm always first up.
00:07:33I love being there.
00:07:34I love being around people.
00:07:38This is definitely the most united team ever assembled.
00:07:42And, obviously,
00:07:43that familiarity that we all have with one another
00:07:46enables us to focus on the job at hand.
00:07:48You okay, Joe?
00:07:49Not thinking about chemistry or bonding.
00:07:53The team is formed.
00:07:54Let's go.
00:08:12No, no, no.
00:08:13Come on.
00:08:14This ball sack.
00:08:16Somebody throw the damn ball at me.
00:08:19Well, I'm sure you're going to have a shot.
00:08:21Ow!
00:08:22Oh, Christ, man!
00:08:24Oh, you're so hard.
00:08:31The team's makeup are very different.
00:08:33The United States have six rookies of their 12,
00:08:36so half of their team have never played
00:08:38in this kind of environment before.
00:08:42There's been this sense in recent Ryder Cups
00:08:44that the Europeans are better
00:08:45just because they mesh better together.
00:08:48And the Americans just have to find some way to reverse that.
00:08:52To take a dozen guys who just play an individual sport
00:08:55and are only ever looking out for themselves
00:08:57and bring them together to play on a team
00:09:01in one of the most intense environments in all of golf.
00:09:05Holy shit!
00:09:09I'm very excited.
00:09:10I wouldn't even say necessarily nervous.
00:09:14More just like anxious and excited
00:09:16and ready to kind of get it going.
00:09:20Yes.
00:09:20It's going to be awesome to kind of get some advice
00:09:23from some other guys,
00:09:24learn how other guys maybe strategize golf courses,
00:09:27how they take on different golf shots.
00:09:31Ben, Cam, and I, we kind of know that we're the rookies,
00:09:34so we're kind of looking out for each other.
00:09:36We pump each other up a little bit more.
00:09:39I'm pretty nervous.
00:09:40I want my game to feel tight.
00:09:42I want to feel confident
00:09:42because obviously there's more people to let down
00:09:46instead of just myself this week.
00:09:48Did you ever actually dream of playing in the Ryder Cup?
00:09:51What was that level of belief?
00:09:53Yeah, I did watch, of course, Ryder Cups growing up.
00:09:57Did I ever dream or think I would be on a team?
00:10:00No.
00:10:01You know, I think that kind of stems back to self-belief issues.
00:10:04And, you know, once I had my first daughter,
00:10:07you know, her favorite song was Let It Go,
00:10:09and I think I just tried to go by that mantra.
00:10:11Can you sing it for us now?
00:10:12Let it go.
00:10:16Oh, my God.
00:10:17There's a lot of new blood on this American team,
00:10:20but the U.S. has an incredible, deep, talented roster.
00:10:24They've got Xander Shoffley, who won two major championships.
00:10:27They've got the best player in the world in Scotty Scheffler.
00:10:30We're a very, very deep, very talented team,
00:10:34very hungry team.
00:10:35Nice, JT.
00:10:36Pretty.
00:10:37Just like I taught you.
00:10:39Seven of the top eight in the world rankings currently are Americans.
00:10:44And with the home crowd support behind them,
00:10:46I think they are the favorites.
00:10:49For as competitive as the Ryder Cup always is,
00:10:52going back to 2014,
00:10:53all of the Ryder Cups have been won by the home team.
00:10:56And there's a couple reasons why.
00:10:58Number one is the home captain having the ability to set up the golf quiz.
00:11:02Also, the crowd.
00:11:04You get the crowd on your side.
00:11:06It's a very real thing.
00:11:07You feel that momentum.
00:11:08You get the support.
00:11:10New York fans are incredible.
00:11:11I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to hopefully get them riled up and excited for what's to come.
00:11:19USA! USA! USA!
00:11:22One of the biggest achievements in the game is to win an away Ryder Cup.
00:11:26The fans are going to be loud and everybody expects it to be boisterous.
00:11:32Well, I think it's New York, isn't it?
00:11:34We all know how rowdy they can get, how spirited they can get.
00:11:37You know, that makes it extra challenging for us.
00:11:43But we have superstars on our team.
00:11:46They've been in that environment before.
00:11:50This is going to be my seventh Ryder Cup.
00:11:52Something that I'm very proud of.
00:11:54Myself and Rory, I guess, being the only two guys on the team that have tasted a victory in foreign
00:11:58soil.
00:11:59It's rarefied air.
00:12:02Winning an away Ryder Cup for either team has been a real challenge in the last couple of decades.
00:12:06So, I think that's what we're all looking for, is a little advantage.
00:12:12What advice have you given to the younger guys?
00:12:17I'm very lucky.
00:12:18I get a lot of support pretty much everywhere I go when I play golf.
00:12:21And it's going to feel a little different for me this week.
00:12:25So, it's really just trying to find the balance of using that energy from the crowd to fuel your performance.
00:12:31But that's the challenge of playing away, right?
00:13:01It's just spectacular.
00:13:07It's just spectacular.
00:13:10It's just spectacular.
00:13:11Right up here for me.
00:13:12One, two, three.
00:13:14Good.
00:13:15Again.
00:13:16One, two, three.
00:13:17Good.
00:13:17Having done that job in Italy, I think there's a ton of pressure on you as the host.
00:13:25And I think they care a lot about doing a great job for Team USA.
00:13:31And last one for me.
00:13:33One, two, three.
00:13:34Thank you very much.
00:13:36I lied.
00:13:36One more.
00:13:36Okay.
00:13:38It's so special.
00:13:40No one could even begin to understand how much work and time and sacrifice.
00:13:47Missing kids' birthday parties and going to weddings alone over how many years.
00:13:54To be able to relax and celebrate being there.
00:13:59Like, okay, this is why.
00:14:01We're leaving, brothers?
00:14:03Yeah, all done.
00:14:07USA!
00:14:09USA!
00:14:10USA!
00:14:12USA!
00:14:14USA!
00:14:15USA!
00:14:15Go, USA, baby!
00:14:16Let's go!
00:14:18Welcome to a scene unlike any other in the game.
00:14:23The buildup has been enormous.
00:14:2850,000 fans expected to be out there each day.
00:14:32Woo-hoo!
00:14:34Started lining up before the sun came up.
00:14:37Scotty!
00:14:39Scotty!
00:14:40Sheffler!
00:14:40And it is the greatest spectacle in golf.
00:14:48For the first two days of the Ryder Cup, they're actually team matches, so these guys play by themselves throughout
00:14:53the whole year, but in the first two days of the Ryder Cup, they need a partner, and that's a
00:14:56huge decision for the captain.
00:15:00Fireworks in match one with the powerhouses of Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas taking on Tyrell Hatton and Jon Rahm.
00:15:08It's really important for the captain to get the energy right and also has to make sense from a statistical
00:15:12standpoint.
00:15:13Their games have to be compatible, but also their personalities.
00:15:16Do you know who's hitting first between the two of them?
00:15:19I don't.
00:15:19I gotta think it's Bryson right.
00:15:21Bryson, first tee, driving the green, obviously.
00:15:25Yeah, I think it has to be Bryson hitting the first shot.
00:15:28Statistically, though, it's better for him to tee off on the even holding.
00:15:31You're too lost in the numbers, Luke.
00:15:34This is the Ryder Cup.
00:15:35Throw those numbers out the window.
00:15:37The opening tee at the Ryder Cup.
00:15:4030 miles east of Times Square on this morning on Long Island.
00:16:02As soon as a Ryder Cup week begins, it's us against them.
00:16:07And the scoring is winner-takes-all.
00:16:11There are 28 matches over three days and, therefore, 28 points up for grabs.
00:16:17All of the matches are head-to-head and each match is worth one point
00:16:21or a half point awarded to each side in the event of a tie.
00:16:25Because Europe is the reigning champion, they only need 14 points to retain the Ryder Cup,
00:16:31while the US would need 14 and a half points to take it away from them.
00:16:37Good morning and welcome to the first day of the 45th Ryder Cup.
00:16:43This is match number one.
00:16:46Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas,
00:16:49will take on Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton.
00:16:52It takes every single emotion you've got.
00:16:57Just turned the volume up to 11.
00:17:11Does find the rough.
00:17:14Now on a tee.
00:17:16Bryson DeChambeau.
00:17:22Keegan Bradley said he wanted to lead with a spark.
00:17:25This is that man, Bryson DeChambeau.
00:17:32Oh, he's nailed it.
00:17:34That is perfect.
00:17:36So look at that.
00:17:38Wow!
00:17:38That's how you get the crowd going.
00:17:43USA, USA, USA!
00:17:47What an opening moment.
00:17:50For Team USA.
00:17:53AA, USA, USA, USA.
00:17:57So far this hole has gone exactly the way the US has wanted.
00:18:01this for the icing on the cake to go one up through one in a home ryder cup
00:18:12what a start and that's what they wanted
00:18:20just as designed for captain keegan bradley
00:18:32come to a pga tour event and mcelroy and tommy fleetwood they are loved by crowds
00:18:39not this week tommy
00:18:49brilliant and they have been so far
00:18:53mcelroy chance to win the hole
00:19:00what a team these two have been
00:19:04match one could be in jeopardy for the americans
00:19:11just went left on them so a chance for europe to get up in the first match
00:19:20rahm walks it in europe takes the lead
00:19:25momentum certainly on the side of europe right now here in the first session
00:19:29they've kind of taken the crowd out early here was not expecting day one to go like this like
00:19:37obviously it's not over it's just not the way you hope day one goes in america in new york
00:19:45justin thomas now it's been called the heartbeat of the us side they need the defib machine right now
00:19:52wow and that'll do it we needed that button what a joke for luke donald
00:20:00damn that sucks that sucks and now fleetwood to close it out
00:20:09fleetwood mac another massive margin for europe
00:20:15that man's done everything right so far and two rider cups his captain
00:20:20this european team came in with so much confidence and they've they've done exactly what they needed
00:20:25to do which is silence the crowd right off the bat
00:20:29the crowd i think they're on mute i think that's literally where it is right now um
00:20:34but yeah more of the same come on europe that's the air force one america bringing in reinforcements
00:20:44as we get set for the afternoon session a glorious start for luke donald
00:20:50the european captain is trying to make history crowd is bigger and louder now dan
00:20:59you felt like the u.s were trying their hardest to make that first tea experience as loud and obnoxious
00:21:05and supportive of the u.s teams as much as possible you make us feel like we're definitely the visitor
00:21:15there's a new spectator in the house the president of the united states donald trump
00:21:21the united states donald trump
00:21:25anytime you see the president it adds weight a feeling that doesn't exist in a lot of sporting events
00:21:31he felt like it was going to give the whole team a jolt that's certainly what keegan bradley's hoping for
00:21:37it's the dream scenario for bryson de chambeau gonna shake hands there with the president
00:21:43and he's first agreed him out there as he comes out of the tunnel
00:21:47president trump got golf shoes on if the americans don't get it going the president might want to play
00:21:58walking out with the president united states it's one of the craziest moments in my life
00:22:05i tried to keep myself as calm as possible
00:22:10well if there was ever a stage for a comeback it was just set
00:22:15there is a sense of urgency for the united states
00:22:22first blood to the united states jj spawn
00:22:26you know we open up the show talking about the american rookies coming into a tough situation
00:22:30so far they've all stood up young is next to go at this par four
00:22:37any point you earn in one of those events is special but i i think
00:22:40you know i only get one chance at a first match and you know i did my best to make
00:22:46it count
00:22:48it's that club in such a nice position at the top
00:22:52oh wow what a shot young with the chance for his fourth birdie in this match
00:23:01five-foot lead for him and justin thomas the pride of sleepy hollow cameron young
00:23:11the rookies are finally bringing some energy for the americans and it's starting to look like
00:23:15there's a little bit of hope what a debut into the ryder cup what a confidence he's to play this
00:23:20might make keegan bradley think about what do i do with cam young tomorrow morning
00:23:29and that will be conceded in this victory for cameron young and justin thomas six and five
00:23:40played so well and we felt like a victory like that could just spark something in everybody else
00:23:47certainly having a better afternoon than morning but they needed to didn't they
00:23:52you never know what a little spark will do it's griffin i'm all in seven
00:24:02he's tracking he's tracking ben griffin
00:24:07bringing the energy what of iris
00:24:13ben holds this putt out of nowhere and like bang he's right involved in the match justin rose
00:24:18is next this is crazy every time the u.s seems to be building a little bit of momentum europe
00:24:23answers
00:24:24right back
00:24:30justin rose right back at you what a response holding that one on top of ben was like
00:24:38we're not going away this is not going to be easy we're trained in match play to always expect
00:24:44our opponent to make the next shot but man come on like that was my moment seventh ryder cup for
00:24:50rose still making putts like that this is for birdie to tie the hole for scheffler
00:24:59body shepherd not looking like scotty scheffler there boy this is great news for europe scotty
00:25:04sheffler is not on fire
00:25:08oh man sticks it right in there
00:25:17tommy fleetwood has tied it up all of a sudden it's feeling like friday morning all over again
00:25:32tommy fleetwood has a chance to win the hole
00:25:38which he takes and europe go up in that second match european fans well represented here
00:25:45and loud with the lead here in this ryder cup 18. see we have a great battle with ben and
00:25:52bryson
00:25:53justin rose with a birdie pot to win this match i sort of remembered a little bit like rome
00:26:01when i had a part late in the afternoon and was able to kind of hold it and have that
00:26:07moment where
00:26:07i shared it with the whole team and i kind of turned around i was like for you for you
00:26:10for you for
00:26:12and i kind of wanted this one for tommy
00:26:17justin rose buries another one for a winner
00:26:22the vision that we had for the day was kind of like encapsulated by being able to pull that part
00:26:27in 18 give each other a hug and come off victorious yeah it was huge fleetwood finishes
00:26:33off a fantastic friday justin is somebody that i've looked up to for a long time i've learned so
00:26:39much from him and yet it's always so cool to watch how he plays when he's in contention
00:26:43and we will go into saturday with europe comfortably in front five and a half to two and a half
00:26:59i mean i'm pleasantly surprised that we're we're winning um that's obviously always the goal
00:27:06awesomes are tricky thing to get right it's like a puzzle that you're trying to put together there's
00:27:11lots of different parts to it golf course personality matchups statistics um yeah there's so much that
00:27:18goes into it and i think you know if you spend enough time on it um and obviously if it
00:27:25works out
00:27:25then you feel pretty smart about yourself there's a pretty big lead after the first day but still a lot
00:27:32of points to be played for so um we're just going to keep riding that momentum
00:27:39welcome everybody to day two here at this rider cup the americans are in deep trouble here new york's
00:27:45starting to look like rome we're ready for a fight um seems like new york's woken up a little bit
00:27:50here
00:27:50crowd's going uh i'm excited i got a good feeling about today
00:28:07and now fleetwood with the putter turns it right back around
00:28:14the europeans look awfully strong right now a couple of blues already on the board
00:28:23standing in the bunker rom here at the eighth
00:28:28oh that's silly oh my gosh much more than luck
00:28:37wow this is right of it i think oh my goodness a calamity not the start at all that the
00:28:47united
00:28:47states was hoping for down eight and a half to three and a half
00:28:54mcelroy
00:28:56well a lot of chatter from the crowd and not good comments
00:29:00well they're already at it and rory dealt with it on day one as well
00:29:25the american fans felt like they probably had to come out and try and help their team on saturday
00:29:31especially saturday afternoon we were so far ahead and yeah it was it was interesting it was wild
00:29:43you want rider cups to be different you want them to be high energy you just don't want it to
00:29:48go over step and mark that bunker's looking tasty guys shut the up
00:29:56there's one moment where rory didn't hit that part i think for five or six minutes
00:30:05it's backed off again
00:30:09it's one thing to give them a hard time but uh you can't do it when the guy's over the
00:30:13shot
00:30:15when they were trying to started doing it in our backswings and they started trying to properly
00:30:19put us off when we were actually playing the game that really really pissed me off
00:30:22it's funny when you stand up to them they're very quiet
00:30:30it's just a combustible situation out here right now just the crowds are amazingly involved in the
00:30:36process some of the videos that emerged were were shocking there was this moment with rory mackerel
00:30:43and his wife erica walking past a crowd and all of a sudden a can of beer lands by erica's
00:30:47head
00:30:58so i'm actually the one that took this video and in real time i thought the same thing everyone else
00:31:04did that this was a beer thrown from the crowd at the european team but when i re-watched it
00:31:10slowed down
00:31:11zoomed in it became clear that it was maybe a more confusing narrative that maybe the beer was
00:31:17accidentally knocked out of somebody's hand but the reason everyone initially thought it was an
00:31:22attack was because there was a pretty ominous feeling on the grounds that i don't remember
00:31:28seeing at another golf tournament ever this one has crossed the line more than a few times
00:31:35it was against the spirit of what we do in riding cups and you could see it almost affecting the
00:31:40american players a little bit in a way you know they were trying to hush the crowd as well you've
00:31:45had
00:31:45multiple instances where justin thomas has been trying to quiet the crowd down temperatures and
00:31:50tensions can rise at any given time in a rider cup plus the atmosphere that was created by the crowds
00:31:56meant the players were on a knife edge at any given point there was an incident where justin rose was
00:32:02getting ready to hit his putt
00:32:09rose said it was his putt oh yeah that was a little key exchange there justin rose just telling the
00:32:15the caddy of bryce de chambeau greg bodine to get out of his way as he was reading this putt
00:32:24it's going to be a gentleman's sport and it wasn't a gentleman's sport on saturday afternoon
00:32:39i don't care what people call me because like i'm a grown man i can deal with that and i
00:32:44think rory
00:32:45him and tommy talked about trying to win with excellence in class and yeah we tried to do that
00:32:49as well it's not for me to say you know people can can be their own judge if whether they
00:32:56took it too
00:32:56far you know i'm just proud of us for being able to win um today with you know what we
00:33:02you know what
00:33:03we had to go through if america's gonna win they need to change that scoreboard in their favor
00:33:08now this is not over we know that let's not jump ahead but it's as good as over no it's
00:33:12over
00:33:13you guys are better at this in a hundred ways didn't be they they were seen anything like
00:33:17they were a heavyweight puncher throwing heavyweight punches at us and we were taking them and giving
00:33:20back stronger ones well the only good thing we can say from an american perspective about saturday
00:33:29at the ryder cup it's over that's it you you know when you accept this role you
00:33:38you know the consequences that can come with it i was in the back room with the captains
00:33:45you know staring at this score and it was it was sad to look at that score but you know
00:33:50i had a job to
00:33:51do to go speak to the team and i really had to like really had to get my shit together
00:34:00i just reminded them about how cool it would be to tell your 16 year old self
00:34:07that you were going out to play for your country at beth page black the next day how far everyone
00:34:12in
00:34:13this room has come to get to this point to even have this opportunity and they kept they kept saying
00:34:19we're gonna win this i could tell that they meant it and it was like wow who knows
00:34:30come sunday yeah everything's a bit tense everything's um heightened your mind is telling you like
00:34:38we're fine but there's there's always this feeling that anything can happen
00:34:45you know we're talking about take care of your own point you know let's try and win by a record
00:34:50margin that's the stuff of dreams we're in a very very strong position but we can't let up we have
00:35:02to
00:35:02go out there and try and win the session we've poked the bear now like we expect them to come
00:35:07out swinging
00:35:16there have been final day comebacks in ryder cup history but if the u.s is to win this ryder
00:35:21cup at beth page it will be by far the most monumental in history
00:35:41we've had a late twist with victor hovland withdrawing from today's matches with a neck injury which means
00:35:47harris english sits out and half a point has gone to either side so there's a rule in ryder cup
00:35:54that
00:35:54if a player withdraws each team is awarded half a point as if that match was halved and the day
00:36:00begins
00:36:00so all of a sudden it's 12 to 5 for the europeans entering sunday just two points away and keegan
00:36:09bradley
00:36:09wondering how it's all gonna go today
00:36:13yeah that feeling's pretty pretty awful because there's nothing you can i didn't even know this
00:36:18practice happened you know 99.9 of captains have never had to deal with this the americans aren't
00:36:24happy about rules are rules and now the europeans need just two points out of 11 matches to retain
00:36:30the ryder cup and the americans are without one of their top ranked players in harris english harris english
00:36:39he handled this with the most class i don't even know the word for it he keeps springing up how
00:36:47he doesn't want to make the spot himself and this he wants to do what's right for the team and
00:36:52i know
00:36:52how much this means to the players and i know how hard they're trying and i know that they want
00:36:58nothing more than to win for harris english the europeans are only two points away from retaining the
00:37:07ryder cup and making history on u.s soil to earn a comeback the us team needs nine and a
00:37:14half points
00:37:15they have to dominate every single match there's no margin for error and
00:37:21and i think we're all just holding our breath this is match number one between the european team
00:37:29represented by justin rose
00:37:37against the united states of america team represented by cameron young
00:37:45having options to lead the team out on sunday is an incredible honor to go out number one is
00:37:51definitely you know it's a statement
00:37:53i was playing well and i think my sundays throughout the course of the season have been strong
00:38:03honestly a huge honor to go out first
00:38:11i know justin rose has one of the best records in his ryder cup career and i know i've got
00:38:16to play
00:38:17some great golf to have really any kind of chance cameron young didn't even play the first session now
00:38:22he's the first man out in singles we knew we had to get cameron young on the golf course he
00:38:28was playing
00:38:28exceptional golf probably the best on the team
00:38:35good looking oh that is right what they needed cam young the native new yorker and there's american
00:38:43red up early so far through two days europe has been relentless
00:38:51the smasher bryson full swing i think he likes it well he's chasing it
00:38:59wow best drive of the league so far by anyone
00:39:03bryson's best bradley sends him off down the hill with even more adrenaline
00:39:10young for birdie at the sixth
00:39:15that's his third birdie in the first six holes
00:39:20go to justin thomas here at six just off the fairway
00:39:28oh there it is
00:39:31first deuce first deuce from the fairway so get in justin thomas your side has not heard anything
00:39:38like that all week to the seven par putt bryson gotta have it
00:39:46be a good one
00:39:50five up through seven amazing bryson if he loses that match early on and he's only played for two
00:39:57hours like this could be over quick and griffin ready to go
00:40:03a minor miracle today
00:40:07i got off to a great start
00:40:10used a lot of that fuel from saturday straight into that sunday round and griffin
00:40:14a chance to win the hole and does keegan made a point just don't look at what other guys are
00:40:20doing and focus on your match but i wanted to see what guys are doing price this is a must
00:40:26make being four down
00:40:31it has to start somewhere if there's to be a fight back that might be the moment
00:40:47mcelroy and he's backed off a couple of times every time that they've heckled he's responded and usually
00:40:54it's been positive
00:41:00oh we're not a good one
00:41:05he needs to keep his cool because that's the worst shot you will ever see from roy mcelroy
00:41:11let's head across to 14th where justin rose is first apart for birdie
00:41:18oh wow
00:41:21truly got some stuff from justin rose isn't it
00:41:23what a good match
00:41:35justin thomas has bounced back to take a blue off the board
00:41:39keegan bradley watched it
00:41:41we're out there
00:41:43chipping away and we saw some putts go down and we saw some celebration from the guys and it was
00:41:48awesome
00:41:49jj spawn
00:41:52to win the hole he was two down through three he's taking the lead
00:41:56i gotta keep pressing there's no let up
00:42:00i just remember that us open finish i had if i could do it there i can do it here
00:42:06jj spawn continues to play well after yesterday's late surge
00:42:10this is ben griffin for a birdie
00:42:17he and boyguard are tied griffin from way out
00:42:23being the third to last group i had six or seven matches in front of me so i could hear
00:42:28all the
00:42:28energy at the same time certainly we're not going to pull off this miracle in my mind like i'm just
00:42:33doing my part to try to win this match and that's all i can control but back of my head
00:42:36i'm like this
00:42:37would be crazy if this actually happens this is dechambeau to win the hole on fitzpatrick who's in for bogey
00:42:48looks like we might have a ride of cup on our hands folks
00:42:56with the course the way i've set up no rough obviously greens were soft it makes it hard to
00:43:01separate yourself from players and we saw that in the singles and so a lot of the matches went to
00:43:0718.
00:43:11justin rose tied with cameron young this for another birdie
00:43:20never was online
00:43:25when he missed i mean it's shocking honestly it's hard to believe that i have this opportunity in front
00:43:30of me so young will have his chance to take out one of europe's all-time greats to win the
00:43:38match
00:43:39you kind of have two different things in your mind at the time you're like on one hand what's my
00:43:44process look like to execute this putt well and on the other hand i'm sitting there like i have a
00:43:49putt
00:43:49to beat justin rose on 18 in a rider cup in new york
00:43:57and taylor the young has come full circle it has given the entire u.s side some hope
00:44:08back at 18 right rough for justin thomas
00:44:17again it is still improbable but the united states trying to pull off by far the greatest final day
00:44:24comeback in runner cup history this is a big putt for fitzpatrick from seven feet for par to tie the
00:44:32hole and keep his one-up lead
00:44:37and dechambeau has caught it with one left he looks like he could lift up a house right now
00:44:47at 18 and fleetwood has given jt a chance to win it
00:45:06two clutch 30 putts by the americans at the 18th maybe the impossible is starting to become possible
00:45:18over at 15 xander shopley a four and three winner he takes down rom all of a sudden the americans
00:45:27are
00:45:27taking down europe's best
00:45:31no matter what way it turns out from here i think keegan will be very very pleased with what happened
00:45:36today
00:45:42we were hearing american cheers non-stop i'm like they're feeling it guys they're feeling
00:45:47it keep putting the pressure keep putting the pressure
00:45:52well it's russell henley making some putts and he's two up as i got around the back nine i lost
00:45:57at 13 and 14 and i was like this could actually be the biggest disaster of all time it just
00:46:02all of a
00:46:02sudden feels like we're just running downhill the unthinkable starts to creep into your mind for sure
00:46:08and over at 17 scheffler to keep that one-up lead
00:46:16scheffler winless thus far hoping he finally gets a w on sunday
00:46:26jj spot rolling it in it's gotten contagious for the u.s well the putters have flipped now now the
00:46:32americans
00:46:32are making all the important putts that was the time i finally looked at the board and saw like
00:46:38a lot of red i said oh boy here we go and then on the back caller here at 17
00:46:45cantley has to make to
00:46:47continue it with over
00:46:53not this time for patty ice
00:46:57and europe on the precipice
00:47:02the cup is on the line right here if bryson de chambeau
00:47:05misses this putt just like that europe retains the cup
00:47:16but de chambeau holds off europe for just a little longer
00:47:21a great effort by bryson again five down through the first seven holes
00:47:26he's able to get the half point with fitzpatrick
00:47:30well that means that europe are now within half a point of retaining at 13 and a half to eight
00:47:36and a
00:47:36half got a half point from fitz okay that's half you know you're looking at leaderboards
00:47:42every match is close shane lowry 15
00:47:49two down against russell henley
00:47:52oh big shot right there
00:47:59what a three from larry half the deficit
00:48:05and coming over to 18. world number one over world number two one up victory for scotty scheffler
00:48:14u.s still has to run the table down the stretch
00:48:19over here at 17. jj spawn needs just two putts to win the match on sepp straka that's going to
00:48:27do it for
00:48:28jj spawn
00:48:28you can see more of him in right of cups i'm sure
00:48:38having jt cam pat all right there on the green watching my match and and everyone just storming
00:48:44the green like i just scored a winning touchdown it was like a feeling i've never had before on a
00:48:49golf course
00:48:51the u.s clinging to hopes they got to get the full point in all four matches europe could retain
00:48:59the cup
00:49:00right here if lowry wins this hole
00:49:08oh shane lowry
00:49:13walking down the adine i said to my caddy i said i've got the chance to do one of the
00:49:17coolest things
00:49:17in my life here like i literally i said that to him and i think the fact that i said
00:49:21that and i was
00:49:21aware of the situation i was in um really helped me um and i think when you're nervous and when
00:49:27you're
00:49:27in those situations you need to get it out i need to talk about it russell to go first
00:49:36the u.s needs to run the tables cannot afford one game
00:49:47that's what's amazing they've actually put themselves in position to have a chance
00:49:51to win the full point
00:50:03so hanley opens the door and lowry's trying to jump in here
00:50:09flowery with this spot to tie up this match
00:50:15it's mad what goes through your head when you're in those moments
00:50:21the crowd at the back of the eating green are so close to the edges of green
00:50:24the american players and wives you can just see them jumping around the place
00:50:30chance for lowry this is your moment shane this is it to retain the cup for europe with one stroke
00:50:37of
00:50:38the potter i don't think i'll ever have or feel that much pressure again
00:50:50and shane lowry has done it europe pulls off one of the biggest upsets on u.s soil
00:51:04so
00:51:10shane lowry you look in disbelief tell us all
00:51:19i mean i've been so lucky to experience amazing things in this game
00:51:25that was the hardest couple of hours of my whole life honestly
00:51:29i just can't believe i can't believe that point went in i said over a code this is it
00:51:33and like the ryder cup means everything to me honestly
00:51:43it wasn't even joy it was like relief i think that whole celebration was just pure relief
00:51:48honestly i think the ryder cup is everything i really do
00:52:03i don't want to make sure
00:52:06shit happens like it doesn't always work out and so
00:52:15so grateful to have gotten the experience this ryder cup i mean it's really cool to have been a part
00:52:20of that team and see the fight and see the passion from every single player
00:52:27we weren't really supposed to do this but i just escaped the team for a little bit and just went
00:52:32and found like the family area and just shared like a i don't know like a 20 minute moment with
00:52:38um
00:52:40yeah my family dana's dad just kind of soaked it all in it's pretty cool
00:52:48i can graduated luke and told him just how really incredible it was to watch his team play the way
00:52:55they did at such a high level i can say without question i think luke is the best european ryder
00:53:00cup captain ever you know in sports sometimes there's monday morning quarterbacking is there
00:53:05anything you might have done differently i don't know they they played better than us they deserve to
00:53:09win they're a great team i'm never going to get over this it's just never going to happen
00:53:19i'm really emotionally tired from this
00:53:27i'm trying to to put this behind me but it's impossible like i've come to the realization that
00:53:32i actually just have to figure out a way of living with this
00:53:52luke you've just joined tony jacklin as the only european ryder cup captain to win home and away
00:53:57what does this victory mean to you what does it mean to your team
00:54:00it's going to be the most stressful 12 hours of my life um shout out to the americans and keegan
00:54:07his captaincy um but this means a lot obviously to me and the team couldn't be more proud of these
00:54:14guys what they've gone through and now they'll be taught for generations to come now as someone that
00:54:20that will go down in history
00:54:46great feeling um it was very tense for a long time today
00:54:51here but uh boys grinded and kept going and it was amazing just so happy for our elite
00:55:23yes we lost it was tough we didn't shy away we didn't let everything fold we we went out on
00:55:29sunday and just fought our hardest we fought for the country we fought for keegan we fought for each
00:55:34other and it showed i think by the time the week's over we all create this this new bond
00:55:41and it was just so cool to be accepted into like this circle of guys and and be treated as
00:55:47one of their
00:55:47own it's been certainly a highlight of my career it's such an incredible week i mean main takeaway
00:55:54is just how much i would love to skip two years ahead go try to beat that same team again
00:56:00i will be forever grateful for this group it's such a weird thing to have such a
00:56:07such a soft spot in your heart for something that has such a horrible ending
00:56:11but then i i think about all the moments that i had with the guys hanging out together and you
00:56:16know
00:56:16all the times that we had leading up and the dinners that we had and i would just love to
00:56:21win
00:56:21win one rider cup before i'm done like literally keegan could not have been a better captain he did
00:56:28everything with so much passion all the guys told me they couldn't believe how how great of an
00:56:33experience they had it sucks that we we weren't able to win for him hopefully people can remember
00:56:38this rider cup for the fight we had on sunday keegan's been a great guy he's been there for us
00:56:44he's been
00:56:45very vocal it's such a great job inspiring us and and he's he's been the leader keegan's fantastic
00:56:52i thought he did an awesome job so i know it was a hard situation for him but i think
00:56:56he embraced
00:56:57it incredibly well perfect captain to me and i couldn't have asked for for any more than that
00:57:03and you know i'd love to play for him again
00:57:20this win i think means so much to team europe the gravity of the achievement was not lost on us
00:57:27it was
00:57:28almost like a little bit surreal that we'd done it celebrating as a team there's nothing like it
00:57:37for me personally it was like you know i want this to want this day to last as as long
00:57:42as i can
00:57:44europe's victory over the americans is historic they pulled off their first win on foreign soil since
00:57:51medina and it's also only the second time in history that a rider cup captain has won back to
00:57:58back it's it's kind of a pinch me moment when when someone says you're the greatest rider cup captain
00:58:04ever you know i found my calling in a way i get a lot of the plaudits as captain but
00:58:12i'm very fortunate to
00:58:13be a small cog and a very much larger plan of people who really care about what the rider cup
00:58:19represents
00:58:21it's been a blessing really and um my job is to keep imprinting those lessons and the history on those
00:58:28players making them feel they're playing for more than themselves would you do it again
