The Grove. North end of the Quiet Spine.
Seven sticks in a circle. Pale wood, damp, warm in winter. Under the bark, names have grown up from the roots. Not carved. Risen. Like the forest learned to write.
Kids called it a game once. Count to seven, step inside, run back out. Now the circle keeps count.
Antlers move in the canopy. Not a deer. Not a man. It listens. It borrows voices. It calls with your mother’s tone or your friend’s laugh to fill the empty spot.
The scheme is simple. The Grove needs seven. There are always six names. The seventh stick waits.
You don’t play Sticks and Schemes. It plays you.
