Nigeria drops terrorism charges against ex-justice minister: lawyer

Nigerian authorities have withdrawn terrorism financing charges against former justice minister Abubakar Malami, his lawyer said on Wednesday

00:00Abuba Kamalami was earlier this year charged with knowingly abating terrorism financing
00:06by refusing to prosecute terrorism financiers whose case files were forwarded to his office.
00:13His lawyer, Adedayo Adedeji, told reporters outside court on Wednesday
00:17that the offense of terrorism financing had been removed from an amended charge.
00:23Nigerian media likewise reported that a lawyer for the secret police,
00:28the Department of State Services, told a court in Abuja that the terrorism allegations had been dropped
00:34but the firearms charges remained.
00:37Malami and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, are accused of wanting to commit terrorism
00:42by having an unlicensed gun and ammunition at his home.
00:46They both pleaded not guilty to the illegal possession of firearms charges.
00:52Malami, who served as attorney general and justice minister between November 2015
00:57and May 2023 also faces allegations of financial crimes.
