00:00down of course it cost me money as i thought mckenzie gore and the offense warming up was
00:04gonna get it done again in where the hell are they choppy uh sacramento sac down yeah sacramento
00:12sacramento rangers lose 2-1 on dfw sports station and the home of former rangers hitting coach
00:19brett boone live on the fan cam twitch and youtube here on sean and rj good morning brother how are
00:25you i like that shirt what's happening thank you is my is my background white enough yeah yeah it is
00:32it's very well yeah it is well i'm trying to figure that out but good morning guys how you doing
00:38doing doing pretty well choppy is convinced that the rangers should forfeit all of their home games
00:44not to hit inside the globe there in arlington because he's convinced it's not the talent it's
00:50not the lineup it is the building that is costing them their offense at home did you ever feel that
00:56way last year where were you yeah where were you defending me last year i you know yeah you you
01:04never want to make it an excuse you know i played in early 2000s it was safe go field at
01:09the time in
01:09seattle and it it was the biggest park in baseball and it got into some guys heads and it becomes
01:15mental
01:17uh going around the league last year once i got to pretty much all the cities there was a distinct
01:22difference between playing at home and playing on the road now the pitchers loved it and that's not
01:27to take away from our pitching staff a year ago they were great uh but i'll tell you from a
01:33mental
01:33standpoint it's like early on in colorado you'd go to colorado and boy those hitters would be smiling
01:37on that plane those pitchers would be you know hiding in the back going oh i got a pit hopefully
01:42my my
01:43my start doesn't come up in colorado it becomes mental when you that's your home field and you
01:50have to play there all the time from a hitter standpoint and and i saw it you know last year
01:55my
01:55my job was to get that out of their mind there's nothing you can do about it you play a
02:00game the
02:00other team has to play at the same facility so it's it's equal footing but i but i but i'd
02:06be uh
02:06you know i'd be lying if i said i haven't seen teammates that it gets in your head and it's
02:12like
02:12okay if i hit the ball right of left center man i really got to hit my best bolt or
02:19it's not going
02:19out and then bad thoughts start to creep in your mind like if i pull the ball a little more
02:23i don't
02:24have to hit it as hard and that just gets away from your your stance there's guys on that team
02:29that
02:29it doesn't matter but for for the masses yeah it's a big ballpark i haven't been there this year
02:35obviously i haven't seen if it's carrying the same way but i remember the veterans a year ago the
02:40simians the seegers i'd hear them discussion in discussions that hey at 23 this ball was flying
02:45out of here and the ball isn't just isn't going now with the new metrics uh guys soon as it's
02:50hit
02:50they look at the angle and they look at the exit velocity and they said that should be a home
02:54run
02:54it's almost like a math problem so it was definitely playing really big last year i don't know if it's
02:59still playing big this year but from what you're saying it's uh you're hearing that early yeah it has to
03:05be their head because like you know it just seems that you would think it's just fly balls that should
03:10be home runs it should become out it's also like they're also not getting they're not racking up
03:14ground ball singles line drive singles so it has to be mental and i would say the same thing and
03:20ask
03:20you this about wyatt lankford this year with his start like you know the mental side of baseball
03:25you're you're only a handful of games in but you're hitting 161 like how long before you press
03:32when you're off to a bad start as an individual well well that's why this game it's it's so hard
03:37and and you fight through its trial and error and we're all young at one point you know wyatt's had
03:43these huge expectations every ever since he came to the big leagues and i think people expect a little
03:48more out of where he's at in his development i i know i love wyatt lankford uh he's a he's
03:55a talent
03:56tons of talent and he's a young player and everybody's saying oh he's going to be the next mv
04:02p looks like mike trout well that's that's kind of unfair expectations put on anybody i think wyatt
04:07lankford's going to be better than he was a year ago i don't think he's going to be that mvp
04:11this
04:11year that everybody thinks he is i think in a year or two when wyatt really starts to come into
04:16his
04:17own i think he's gonna be one of those players that you talk about in the mvp race but i
04:21think
04:21the expectations that have been put on him a little bit unfairly let him develop wyatt's a good
04:27player he tinkers he's one of those guys that figures it out himself and a lot of us have to
04:32do it that way you can't just go in there and put hands on it so you got to do
04:35this this and this
04:36you can give you can give your advice you can give your trial and error my that's what i used
04:41to tell
04:42him my experiences what i went through as a young player but why it's one of those guys he'll sit
04:47in
04:47that cage and he'll tinker he'll tinker he'll tinker he'll figure something out i saw it on several
04:51occasions last year it's going to be the same i don't worry about the the rough start for him he's
04:56going
04:56to be fine i think he's going to be a little bit better version when it's all said and done
05:00than wyatt langford was a year ago but i don't see him going from a year ago to he's going
05:05to be
05:05contending with aaron judge for the mvp i think it's a process and i think why it's in the middle
05:10of that
05:10he's still a young kid you know i said a couple years ago i watched him i said this guy
05:16should be
05:16playing in the minor leagues but he's too talented to play in the minor leagues so he's in you know
05:22it's
05:22it's kind of a it's a compliment in a in a way but uh he's still a young kid he
05:27hasn't had much
05:28experience in pro ball except for at the big league level and he's he's going to be i'll tell you
05:33he's
05:33going to be the only the only thing the negative thing i have to say about why it is he's
05:38almost too
05:38physical he goes too hard you know ken griffey jr when they used to tell him early in his career
05:43hey don't be running into those walls well you can't tell somebody that you're wired the way you're
05:48wired and he's fun to watch and when he puts it all together gets all this this experience under
05:53his belt he's going to be a lot of fun to watch but i don't i don't worry about the
05:56early really
05:57rough start brett boone brought to you by granger for the ones who get it done granger offers the
06:01professional grade products you need delivered when and where you need them call click granger.com or
06:06just stop by brett you know nimmo's been a revelation for the rangers at this point he has been the
06:13stud in
06:14the lineup so far obviously hitting above his career numbers and it's early and a lot of these
06:18things will probably balance out a little bit but like how sustainable is it do you think to rely on
06:22nimmo to be this type of an impact player in their lineup the whole year you know i watched i
06:27was
06:27really interested to see how this season started man nimmo i can't say enough about him as as far as
06:32you know when i ping pong around the league and i watch a lot of games uh and a lot
06:36of different
06:36divisions nimmo to me as far as impacts of new players uh is going to be for me is one
06:42of the best i watch
06:43him he just seems comfortable you always come to a new team with expectations you want to you want
06:48to do good you want to show that they traded for somebody that you're going to make them proud
06:52i'll tell you he just seems like he just for some reason just fits really good at the top of
06:57that
06:57lineup he's been the biggest positive i've seen in in the rangers lineup or their starting rotation
07:04so i i think he's just fit in really great i think he's going to be a huge boost for
07:09that offense
07:10at the top obviously he's hitting 330 already he's got two or three homers uh i think i think
07:16that's going to be a real win in the long run for for the rangers getting him and i was
07:20you know when
07:21that when i heard they got nimmo i i was kind of skeptical a little bit he hit 25 home
07:25runs a year
07:26ago in new york i said you're going to come to texas if the ball's flying that way probably not
07:30going
07:30to hit 25 and and it's interesting to see how people react to a trade going going from new york
07:36to texas but i'll tell you what he seems right at home i think that's a huge acquisition for that
07:41offense and you know they need someone like that at the top brett what's your take on the west so
07:48far
07:48uh we had seattle and less then the astros lost eight in a row then it's the athletics at the
07:54top
07:54and the rangers at the top what's your take so far interesting division in it you know coming in i
08:01thought from what i saw last year and i think i told you guys is i think the class of
08:05not only the west
08:06but of the american lake i think is the seattle mariners and they got off to a horrible start
08:10they've they've kind of rekindled that they're getting it going a little bit it was like who's
08:15going to be second third you always say houston you know houston's been there for so long you're
08:19just used to houston knocking on the door every year man with those injuries javier goes down their
08:25big guy brown goes down the huge thing i think they're going to miss is framber valdez who's been a
08:29staple in that rotation for a long time he's gone so i'm looking at houston early yeah they're really
08:34reeling they lost i don't know seven eight in a row i don't think i'm starting to think i don't
08:41know that houston's going to be the factor that they have in the past in this division the wild
08:45card for me a's are playing better the angels a year ago we played the angels and man they were
08:51scary offensively i don't think they can pitch enough to to contend for that division but that
08:55offense is scary uh we went to anaheim and man they gave us all we needed to handle we'd score
09:01three
09:01they'd come back with three we'd score two they'd come back with two angels are a juggernaut
09:05offensively don't think they can pitch enough a's nice story doing better i don't think they have
09:10what it takes i look at this rangers it's all going to come down to to health you know i
09:16think the
09:17offense is going to be what it is you're going to see hopefully some improvements some for people
09:20it's good to see burger off to a good start he's got four home runs already he was banged up
09:25last
09:25year a lot it's really good to see nate come back the way he started i kind of watched him
09:30something was off early in the season the last two starts have been the nate evaldi that these guys
09:35are going to need degrom's been great the last two uh gore's been steady uh josh young has bounced back
09:45josh young that's that's good to see because he had a lot of stuff going on a year ago he
09:50got sent to
09:50the minor leagues back and forth he's got to be a huge part of it and i think the key
09:54to this
09:54this rangers how about the new guys in the bullpen they're second in all baseball in the
09:58bullpen they've been doing a great job it was good to see martin get it out last night it was
10:03good to
10:03see garcia get a clean inning but the guys at the end it's been junis and beaks and and uh
10:09and i i
10:10think lats is going to be a huge swing guy he can he can spot start for you but he's
10:15also really useful
10:16out of the pen alexander i love cole win i think he's going to be a future closer uh he's
10:21the real deal
10:22so that pen's good as long as that rotation with degrom and evo they're a little bit older
10:27lighter's going to come along he's got great mentors in that in that room to help him rocker's
10:32rocker he's going to have his learning pains but but i think he's he's good i think it's a solid
10:37rotation if everybody's healthy i don't see why the rangers aren't the one that gives seattle a push
10:44but i think clearly in that division line to line talent wise one through five pitching staff
10:50and the lineup i think seattle's definitely the class of the west brett boone joining us here 105
10:56to the vent you mentioned health you know last night curvello uh leaves the game after two pitches
11:01he threw one of the dirt you know he's moving his arm the next one he throws he throws his
11:05glove down
11:05motions the team to come out and it was like one of the things like oh man you know his
11:10reaction is
11:11like we're not going to see him maybe maybe for the rest of the year first thing i thought i
11:15was
11:15like everything is like his bicep tendon rolled up on him where he was holding his arm yeah and then
11:19you see the orioles manager get one take one in the face was what was that the worst injury you
11:25saw
11:25on the field during your playing days worst injury oh uh i saw a kid named holman this is early
11:36in my
11:36career when seattle we're in texas actually not the last stadium the original stadium and a line drive
11:44from a mario diaz if that rings a bell hit him right in the forehead right here i'm playing second
11:50base i run in he's out cold on the mound it looked like a bullet hole in his forehead and
11:55i almost thought
11:56he's dead and he was unconscious they brought him back uh and it's just one of those line drives back
12:03to the pitcher hit him right in the forehead i also saw tom browning uh broke his arm on a
12:08pitch
12:08oh so those are those are two of the worst but uh you never like to see anything like that
12:13and i was
12:14i was pretty lucky to avoid those major injuries where you know you got to get carted off or something
12:19like that i i kind of avoided those booney your guy itro had the statue unveiled the broken bat
12:26the broken bat uh tell us something that we wouldn't know about itro suzuki and how many
12:33straight pure hitters would you take over him
12:39best hitter you know my thoughts on best hitter bonds and it's not even close uh it's not even close
12:47pure hitters that i played with or against albert albert pool pool holes yeah yeah
12:56how about i thought you're gonna say albert bell he wasn't bad either yeah but but but we're gonna
13:01talk just pure just pure hitter yeah uh guy i played with that righty lefty i don't care if it's
13:07randy johnson i don't care if it's pedro martinez i'm dating myself with these with these pitchers
13:13i've got to send him up there and i need a hit throw bonds out of the equation do you
13:20know what i think
13:20about him i'm sending tony gwen to the plate over anybody yeah he's just i thought you're gonna say
13:26edgar i thought you're about to go edgar i'll tell you what edgar mid-90s he's no joke he could
13:32start
13:32him with two strikes and that would be fair for the rest of us to compete with him from an
13:35offensive
13:36standpoint but i think one my life's on the line i hate to get i hate to get grim here
13:41my life's on
13:41the line i need a hit i'm taking tony gwen i thought you were maybe too young for tony wow
13:48i played with
13:49tony in 2000 wow well how did he approach it did he blow you away with you know now he's
13:56talking
13:56and you know he's talking hieroglyphics what you got to do is you got to get it back here and
14:01i go
14:01tony first of all you're left-handed i can't even talk to you because you're left-handed
14:06everything's breaking into you everything's breaking away from me and it was one of those guys where
14:11you know you try to listen you respect what he's done in the game and you try to get that
14:16info but
14:17but i'm i'm serious about the right left yeah righties you are tough lefties are really tough
14:22to relate with because they just see it from a different angle i remember johnny olorud one of
14:27my favorite teammates of all time we couldn't have a conversation about hitting he'd come to me
14:31sometimes when there was a tough left he goes booney what would you do here and i'd give him my
14:35best
14:35advice but it's really tough talking righty and lefty tony i just kind of watched how we how we
14:40prepared you know if i tried to get anything from him it was how we went about his business and
14:44he was
14:45prepared he was a big t guy he would hit for days and days and days off that t uh
14:50but he just got
14:51in position got his foot down he used to say i guess with that voice he'd say i'd get that
14:55foot down and
14:56wham uh but man to watch to watch him hit the eye that he had it just seemed like he
15:03slowed the game
15:04down like a barry bonds more than the rest of us and uh man he he was a player he
15:09was a lot of fun
15:10he was a lot of fun to play with and and what a hitter this was awesome thank you so
15:15much man we'll
15:15do it again you guys
