00:06baseball insider former rangers hitting coach brett boone host of the brett boone podcast and
00:12he is brought to you by granger for the ones who get it done granger offers the professional grade

00:21any of your teams ever get no hit ever i was thinking about that when they got no hit i
00:28said
00:28never got no hit close close a couple times never got no i've been on a no i've been on
00:34a team that
00:35pitched a no hitter um but no never been no it is not a good feeling i've been close though
00:41a few
00:41times you know we go into the seventh you're just looking at each other like this can't happen you
00:46know you're beyond winning the game it's like yeah you don't want that headline you do not want that
00:53headline it was i'll tell you i watched probably at least six innings of that game that's one of
00:59the most bizarre no hitters i've ever seen i mean i i i tuned in at the beginning i saw
01:05that first inning
01:06where uh is it emai yeah he's all over he's all over the call over i'm like what what is
01:12going on
01:13here no hitter you kidding me and then to follow it up with yesterday's first inning it's baseball's
01:19crazy it's crazy it just there's just no rhyme or reason i look around you know i i look around
01:25this
01:26this schedule and i watch all these games and it's like two weeks ago we're talking about chicago cubs
01:31can't lose a game they just lost 10 straight out of out of nowhere you know i deal with it
01:36with my
01:37brother you know they're hot they go 11 11 and you know 11 out of 13 then they lose eight
01:43out of nine
01:44it's like nothing makes sense but uh so it makes it great never know explain to the non-major league
01:50player why when you're getting no hit it's against the unwritten rules to try to bunt your way on to
01:57get a hit well it's it it's not you know that's a that's a misnomer and even big leaguers oh
02:04you can't
02:05bunt on me bull crap here's the deal first and foremost my job is to win the game
02:13i don't care how i how i get on now yes when you get into the unwritten rule okay if
02:20it's seven
02:21if it's seven nothing and you're getting no hit in the eighth yeah you don't drop a bunt now i
02:27i agree
02:28with that but if it's two to nothing i'm within two i need to get on base i need to
02:36find a way to get
02:37on base so a bunt is in order and i don't care what anybody says i'm i'm my job i
02:41don't care about
02:41your no hitter i could care less my job is to give my team an opportunity to win so if
02:50it's a
02:50you know if somebody walks it's a three-run game they're given they're given you know me or my
02:56teammate to bunt and we bunt to bring the tying run to the play there's nothing wrong with that and
03:03and i've seen that over the years i've seen oh you know the the back and forth the debate oh
03:10you know
03:10as long as your goal is to win the game put yourself in position uh to bring that tying run
03:16to the plate
03:19anything goes font whatever you want to do so i'm i'm not of that but yes i'm with you i'm
03:25with you on
03:25the blowout you know you don't you don't drop a bunt in the six nothing no hitter no you that
03:30that's when
03:30you have some integrity and you try to hit your way out brett ranger fans uh hit a breaking point
03:36this past weekend after the angels series they're fed up uh they want chris young's head on a platter
03:42they want ray davis's head on a platter going after skip as well what do you say to the ranger
03:47fans
03:47who are are just absolutely fed up well i think you know i've been on a lot of different teams
03:54and
03:54that's what happens it's not i look at these situations i look at a lot of teams around the
04:00uh around baseball right now and their managers are on the hot seat you had two early big firings
04:05that you didn't expect with boston and with philly and it's not cora's fault it's not rob thompson's
04:12fault when it comes down to it's the players it's the players they win games they lose games as coaches
04:18we
04:18we facilitate we help but it's not their fault it's it's uh but somebody's got to be accountable
04:25for it and i think when you take one of these positions you know as being the owner well as
04:30being the owner you do whatever you want but but when we take these roles as coaches managers general
04:36managers presidents you're in a position where when things don't go good and it's not necessarily
04:41your fault or even closer you're going to hear about it i think these guys are professionals they
04:46understand that i completely understand the fans and their frustration that's what makes this game
04:51great is is the fans and having that opinion you know as a player i was from the from the
04:56ilk of
04:57you know if i'm not doing my job i know what i i know what i signed up for being
05:01a major league player i
05:02get to make a really good living uh getting getting a pretty awesome life getting to doing things people
05:09dream of and when i'm not performing i expected to hear it from the fans now i i hope you
05:14keep it classy
05:15and and you don't cross the line but but that's part of it and if you can't handle some criticism
05:21when things are going bad you're not playing well well you you're in the wrong occupation so i
05:25completely understand the the frustration uh with the fans the good news is as a player as a staff
05:32with the texas rangers i watch these guys and i have obviously a little bit of skin in the game
05:36i love
05:36these guys i just came off the field with them and i'm pulling for these i hate to see them
05:40doing
05:40uh having a tough time especially offensively i stick i stick to my guys but i always try to
05:47find a silver lining and and when times are tough it's like here's the deal yeah it hasn't gone the
05:53way we want we've had a lot of injuries you got wyatt seager smitty uh josh young just went down
05:58for
05:58a couple days he's back in the bullpen yet didn't have martin garcia there garcia still isn't back so
06:04you've been playing kind of you know not fully fully cocked here when it comes to a full roster
06:12but let's let's look at the division we're playing it for the first time i think yesterday a's lost
06:20the ace are leading the division with a sub 500 record so think about this if the if the season
06:27started off this bad we're in pretty good shape if you're a texas ranger you you have four over four
06:34months to go and you're sitting here four games under 500 and you're a game and a half out of
06:41the
06:41division yeah things could be worse i mean if you're in the atlanta's division how you look at
06:46you're looking up and the season's almost over but you're sitting in this division count your lucky
06:50stars and say hey i got a lot to play for let's turn this around the four months let's get
06:54these
06:54guys that are injured get them healthy and get them playing again we've got you've seen the staff
07:00you've seen what they're capable of now it's a long season you got to get you know you got to
07:04stay
07:04free of injury you know evaldi and degrom they're not getting any younger but you've got a formidable
07:10staff and a bullpen that's doing a really good job offensively i think they're playing under their
07:16capabilities absolutely evan carter had a big night last night but he's been struggling i mean you look
07:21at this lineup up and down are they most formidable lineup in the game no but i'll tell you what
07:27you're
07:27right in the mix right now so i don't think it's a time from a player from a organizational uh
07:33perspective
07:33with all the all the things going on in this division uh it's not a time to panic it's a
07:39time
07:39to get it together and let's go brett you know there was a uh i remember isaiah thomas had a
07:46quote years
07:46ago where he said the secret to winning basketball is realizing that it's not about basketball it was
07:52about all the other factors surrounding an nba team how much in baseball do you feel like
07:57winning or getting on the right track when your offense is underperforming and other things like
08:00that how much of it is about the non-factors the culture factors and and what was your experience
08:06being inside the rangers organization how you felt like the the culture was
08:11well i think it's a good culture but i think you're right i think culture is big you know you
08:16got to create a culture you got to create a winning uh guys coming to the ballpark wanting to come
08:21to
08:21the ballpark guys enjoying one another did brett just disappear yes yeah let's go out all right let's
08:31see if he signs back in i almost interrupted bob i saw i saw i can't take it i can't
08:37take the amount
08:37it's not it's not you making excuses but anytime i hear another word or term and i'm about to go
08:43at
08:43brett with it anytime i hear something besides a lack of talent it drives me crazy oh there's a there's
08:51a hundred percent a lack of talent yeah they don't have a good they don't have good enough players and
08:56talent stop with the underperforming stop with the culture stop with the wind tunnel stop with the
09:03manager there's not enough talent do you do you think the culture is good i don't just from some
09:09of the buzz we've heard about kevin pilar talking about the way that organization was some of the
09:12stuff we've heard about see you're like i'm not saying i'm not saying that would fix everything but
09:16it does make me wonder like is that also a contributing factor is it just another thing
09:20i don't know i i think skip is liked early on i think what how i think chris young is
09:27the big
09:28question mark in terms of uh intensity and it's there you know there's when you're struggling
09:38and this goes for any work office right like when you're struggling sometimes you need the leadership
09:46to be hands off and say it's fine i know we're better than this sometimes you need them to crack
09:52skulls right it's incumbent upon the leader to know how and when to do what and i think my big
10:00question about the rangers culture is what does chris young do during success right and what is chris
10:11young does he make it so uncomfortable that people are too uncomfortable to do their jobs i don't know
10:18i but i that that is my big question about what's happening but i don't blame chris young right now
10:24for his temper i blame chris young for the lineup that's my issue with it we got brett moon on
10:29the
10:29phone uh brett we were just talking about the culture before you got cut off yeah i'm sorry my
10:34computer i don't know why it went out um yeah the culture is something you you create as players i
10:41mean
10:41it's not up to anybody else i think as coaches as staff behind the scene guys i my my message
10:46to to
10:47staff members is a let's keep let's keep our stuff let's keep the the non-uniform personnel front office
10:54coaches let's keep that behind closed doors they don't need to see that these players need to come
10:59out and play that's all that matters they're the most important piece in the room and and we are
11:04background players like i always said so as a co as a staff member i can only do so much
11:10yeah i can set
11:11a great precedent a tone from a staff perspective but that doesn't matter it's the players and they
11:18need to find a way you're you're a big leaguer this isn't time to coddle you and that you know
11:22that's a little bit of the thing i think it's changed over the years where and it's not these
11:28guys's fault these players coming up but they're very you come to the big leagues now as a rookie
11:33and hey you're here and you we treat you great when i came up it was like sit in the
11:39corner shut
11:39up until you do anything i'll tell you you know what i'll tell you when you when you finally do
11:45uh kind of establish yourself and you kind of make it where you stand in the room with the other
11:51guys
11:52going you know what i'm a big leaguer i'm accepted the the the gratitude and and oh it's like wow
11:58you
11:58know what i went through to earn this so it was worth it now i see a lot of when
12:02you get to the big
12:03leagues oh we're going to make it comfortable for you and everything's good and everybody be nice to
12:07the rookie it's like well yeah i think that's good as far as how you treat another human being
12:13but i don't know if it's the greatest thing for creating a tough atmosphere where these guys are
12:17gristled and appreciate what they're given a lot of things are just given these days if you have a
12:22lot of talent it comes with a little sense of entitlement which we didn't have in my generation i
12:27don't want to sit here and say get off my lawn it's better when i played it's just a little
12:32bit
12:32different and i wonder sometimes if that creeps into the culture because a lot of guys are given
12:37things now instead of earning them going through a tough tough road to to get there and to be an
12:42established big leaguer but yeah getting back to the culture culture is created by the players as
12:47coaches as staff members chris young in the president position there's only so much he can do i'm just a
12:52big a big proponent of keep that away from the players keep that as far away as from the players
12:58as
12:59you can and then you got skip schumacher you're the you're the head dog you're the top dog don't
13:03let them see you sweat you're the flight attendant when there's turbulence and you've got to be the
13:07one that people look to you start to panic everybody else is going to panic so that's that's the top
13:12this
13:12is when you earn your money as a manager it's not putting the lefty in at the right time or
13:16the right
13:17here or having that lineup perfect how the algorithm sets up it's about managing people getting these guys
13:23putting them in position to succeed and creating a really good winning positive attitude putting
13:28everybody in the best possible position they can to be as good of players as they can be
13:34brett boone joining us here 105 to the fan um i wanted to ask about to grom because in his
13:39last
13:39four starts i mean he's really getting hit pretty hard uh he's allowed eight home runs in those four
13:45starts you know six runs four runs six runs when do you start to get worried about a pitcher that
13:51is
13:51an all-time great but they hit a stretch where they're really pitching poorly right now
14:01no yeah and with the grom i've watched him and i and i saw him give the four home runs
14:06up i think
14:06he's never done that before and then last down he gave up a couple or a couple i think in
14:10the first
14:11inning um but i remember three or four starts ago i'm watching to grom and you know you watch all
14:18these
14:18great pitchers in the game today and you make comparisons three or four starts ago i'm watching
14:23jacob pitch i think he went seven innings shutout innings and i said man he's he's at the age he
14:29is
14:29now and he's still when he's on his game he's as good as anybody in the game so it's not
14:36like he's had
14:38a couple starts but we haven't seen the old de grom in years or or six months or or 15
14:43starts
14:44i saw greatness top caliber number one elite stuff three or four starts ago so so at the because i've
14:52seen that i'm not in a mode where i would panic if i'm a texas ranger obviously your top your
14:58top
14:59guy your number one starter he needs to be better than he's been recently but the fact is within a
15:05month i've seen that dominant stuff from de grom so it's not like you're in a panic mode it's like
15:10no
15:10we need a little more consistency we need you to be a little more de grom more than you have
15:15been
15:15lately but i don't panic like it's gone it's you know the the old de grom is gone because i
15:21saw it
15:21three or four starts ago thank you brother enjoy it as always thank you thanks guys he is brett boone
15:28former rangers hitting coach right here on your home for rangers baseball
