00:00U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday, April 13th, that the American military had begun a blockade of Iranian
00:07ports
00:07as part of his effort to pressure Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz and accept the deal to end
00:13the war, which has raged for more than six weeks.
00:17According to Vessel Tracker Marine Traffic, at least two tankers approaching the strait on Monday turned around soon after the
00:24U.S. blockade had begun.
00:27The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Agency said the blockade restricted the entirety of the Iranian coastline, including ports and
00:35energy infrastructure.
00:39On the other hand, Iran responded with threats on all ports in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman,
00:45taking an aim towards U.S.-allied countries.
00:50Iran's effective closure of the strait, through which a fifth of the global oil transits in peacetime, has sent oil
00:56prices skyrocketing,
00:57pushing up the cost of gasoline, food, and other basic goods far beyond the Middle East.
01:05Prior to the U.S. blockade, Tehran had allowed some ships whom it perceived as friendly to pass while charging
01:10considerable fees,
01:12leading to accusations it is holding the global economy hostage.
