U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested American troops could seize Iran's Kharg Island oil export hub, even as he added in comments published Monday that a deal with Tehran to end the war “could be made fairly quickly.”

On the ground, the war showed no sign of letting up: Tehran struck a key water and electrical plant in Kuwait, and an oil refinery in Israel came under attack.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump has said he's considering having American troops take Karg Island.
00:07That is the Iranian oil terminal in the northern part of the Persian Gulf,
00:11through which the Islamic Republic ships most of its oil.
00:15Now this came in an interview with the Financial Times.
00:18Trump considered taking Iranian oil in that interview.
00:21At the same time, he suggested that negotiations with Iran were going well.
00:26This is coming as Tehran today acknowledged receiving a 15-point ceasefire proposal
00:32from the Americans, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman dismissed it as outlandish,
00:39but also said that there were no direct negotiations currently ongoing between Tehran and Washington.
00:46All this comes as Iran maintains its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz,
00:51the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, through which about 20% of the world's oil and natural gas passes
00:57in peacetime.
00:58Now, though, only a few ships a day are going through, and those must have Iran's permission.
01:05Now, Trump has American forces that are moving into the region.
01:08That includes U.S. Marines, as well as other paratroopers.
01:13But it remains unclear whether or not he's going to go ahead and order this operation on Clark Island,
01:19or to potentially unblock the Strait of Hormuz,
01:22or if this is just another negotiating tactic to try to get Tehran to the table
01:26and find a ceasefire to end this war.
