From Manesar to Noida: Why Workers Are Protesting
Transcript
00:02The visuals of chaotic, leaderless protest in Noida may seem sudden, but they weren't.
00:07The unrest had been building quietly across NCR's industrial belt for days.
00:11But here's the thing, the first signs appeared in Manisir, Haryana.
00:22The Haryana government on April 9 revised minimum wages with effect from April 1, 2026.
00:27The last revision happened on October 21, 2015.
00:31This hike would mean unskilled wages rising from 11,274 to over 15,200 rupees.
00:37But this hasn't happened on the ground.
00:40The protestors in fact claim that they are getting attention now because
00:43The protests have exposed deep fault lines in the region's labour economy, forcing authorities into damage control even as political
00:54blame games intensifies.
01:06What followed was a wave of largely leaderless protests as migrant workers, already strained by rising inflation and stagnant wages,
01:14gathered in large numbers.
01:15Other workers alleged that they would not provide adequate safety equipment and that the cost of aprons and slippers was
01:21deducted from their salaries.
01:23Working hours were long and they were often no days off, they said.
01:26And they alleged that despite these protests,
01:29What do they come to me?
01:30What do they come to me?
01:30What do they come to me?
01:31What do they come to me?
01:32No one will come to me.
01:32We are fighting today, right?
01:34We will take it away from the company.
01:36And for many workers here, the anger isn't about just wages.
01:40It's about fairness.
01:41Because as George Orwell once wrote,
01:43All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
01:47From Manisir to Noida, that gap is now out on the streets.
