Can we say that about these NFL teams and players?
Transcript
00:0497.1 Valenti and Rico rolling on until 6 p.m. today.
00:10So there are radio segments that you call benchmarks, right?
00:15Benchmark segments that you do, and, you know, I have a couple, either or.
00:20Can we stop those for majority rules?
00:24You've got one, Rico.
00:26Can we say that?
00:27And you do it on Mondays.
00:30Can we say that on Mondays, my first chance to do this with you?
00:33What do you got for me?
00:47All right.
00:48You know what?
00:48Here's the thing.
00:50I got some things, observations that I've had, and it's going to cut across a lot of different sports today.
00:57But, for one, guys, can we say that for some reason or another, the NFL has just been extremely quiet
01:05as of late?
01:07Just, you really haven't heard anything about anything about anything.
01:16100%.
01:16We need a break from it.
01:19Mark Cuban was wrong when he said pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered, the greed is going to be due.
01:24Obviously, it's not their undoing.
01:25But these other professional leagues, you know, the UFL or whatever it's called, that are not going to work.
01:31What a big mistake to give us football right after we had football.
01:36Do this league, do your league, June, July, and August, lead up to football.
01:41Give us a chance to miss you.
01:42We all, I think, are needing a break from a very exhausting line of season.
01:47Yeah, but if you do those leagues, you're going to be competing with baseball.
01:49But I get what you're saying.
01:51Pre-draft, this feels very much like the calm before the storm.
01:54We're hearing about a lot of things that could be happening soon, whether it be trades or anything of that
01:59ilk.
01:59But I think that's just it.
02:01It's just the calm.
02:01But once that starts happening, I feel like we're going to have a monsoon of activity.
02:06I agree with Kenny.
02:07I'm with him.
02:08This is like the tornado watch.
02:09Some things could happen, but we'll see.
02:13I really think there's going to be a lot of noise next week.
02:16Funny you guys said that.
02:17Because dealing with the NFL draft, guys, can we say that there's just no juice for this draft?
02:24You got one, and I guess it's only because there's one quarterback.
02:29You need lots of quarterbacks in order for the draft to be interesting.
02:33There's one Fernando Mendoza.
02:35You can keep telling me Ty Simpson, but I ain't buying Ty Simpson at all.
02:40There has been about as much buzz created in this draft as a $1 well drink, okay?
02:47That is to say, just about no buzz whatsoever from that $1 well drink.
02:53And I'm asking, what's the reason why?
02:56Is it more because of where the Lions are picking, or is it more because you guys are just down
03:00on the Lions?
03:01I'm talking about top down.
03:02I hope these guys behind the glass are right, and there's a bunch of deals that are about to get
03:07done.
03:07Because draft day could be fun because, I don't know about you guys, there's really one guy, Mendoza, Raiders.
03:17After that, any guy can go to any team at any slot.
03:22That's a lot of unpredictability, a lot of excitement.
03:24Right.
03:25It's normally like, ironically enough, the old saying is, well, once the Raiders make the pick, that's when the draft
03:31starts.
03:32Well, they get the first pick.
03:33And then after that, I have no idea who goes next, who goes after that.
03:39Are people going to trade up, trade down?
03:41It's just, I don't know, just kind of weird.
03:44Draft day, by the way, good movie, bad movie.
03:47Bad movie.
03:47Oh, it's a good movie.
03:48Bad movie.
03:49Good movie.
03:50Bad movie.
03:50Okay, you know what?
03:51I'm going to get to you in a second.
03:52Go ahead, Kenny.
03:53Yeah, no, I think the reason there's a lack of buzz here is just the talent pool is not as
03:57deep as other years,
03:58and the quarterback pool isn't as deep as other years, and you point to all those things,
04:02and what reason do you have to expect people to be like, yay, it's draft time?
04:06I don't think you can do that.
04:08How in the world is draft day a good movie?
04:10In the middle of the draft, they held a funeral on the field, on the practice field, because they don't
04:19have anything.
04:20And all of a sudden, the security guy says, hey, I came across some information.
04:25Really?
04:26It took you the day of the draft to come across information.
04:29They didn't know that was his sister that he handed the ball to?
04:32Hey, listen, no one came to his birthday party.
04:35You don't draft the quarterback when no one came to his birthday party.
04:38He hands the ball off to some woman.
04:39You mean his sick sister who dies afterwards?
04:44Oh, that was her.
04:47Horrible movie.
04:48Oh, come on.
04:49This is so hurtful.
04:50I'll be critical of that, but I like Remember the Titans.
04:52I'd like to point that out.
04:54Okay.
04:54That's a bad movie.
04:55Well, that's because that's your Black History Month.
04:57Yeah, that was the only shit during Black History Month.
04:59That was the only movie they would show in my high school.
05:01All right.
05:03A little college football, or at least college.
05:07One is just college across the board.
05:09Can we say the NCAA has finally, in a broken clock theory, come up with something right?
05:16Normally, they do everything wrong they possibly could, but the NCAA is going to try to come up with the
05:22five-for-five rule, meaning you got five years, five years of eligibility in five years.
05:29There is no red-shirting.
05:30You can play for five years, and then you're done.
05:33Your clock starts after high school or when you're 19, depending on if you go to prep school or something.
05:39But after that, you start.
05:42That's it.
05:43There's no more red-shirting, no more suing to get extra years of eligibility.
05:47If you get hurt, you get hurt.
05:48Well, it also prevents the stupid Chris Wenke type moves where you got like a 27-year-old playing against
05:5718-year-olds.
05:57Hey, I'm still eligible.
05:59Right.
05:59Can I play?
06:00If you're 23, you're not a 23-year-old freshman.
06:03You got this year.
06:05And that's it.
06:06Yeah, and then you're done.
06:07Your timeline is 18 to 20.
06:09It makes too much sense, so naturally, they won't sniff this.
06:12No, I think they're actually going to do this, which is like...
06:14I have no faith.
06:15Why did it take this long?
06:17My faith in the NCAA is only higher than my faith in the Red Wings.
06:23Okay?
06:24That's what we're talking about here.
06:26That level of faith.
06:29I mean, 10 out of 10 for Mark.
06:31No notes.
06:31I agree with everything you just said there.
06:34See, I think what this is is a broken clock.
06:37They just happened to get this.
06:40Yes.
06:40They really didn't put any effort in it.
06:43They're just like, oh, you're going to do this.
06:45Because it's not a good idea.
06:47I don't like it.
06:48Really?
06:48If you go to a restaurant that burns your food every time and they one time don't burn your
06:52food...
06:53It's still a bad restaurant.
06:53You still get no credit.
06:55It's still the NCAA.
06:56Guys, this is it.
06:58Five years, no red shirt.
07:01You can play for five.
07:02Just play for five.
07:04Yeah, Rico, it makes sense.
07:05They don't do things that make sense.
07:07That's correct.
07:07We're hearing everything you say.
07:09It sounds great.
07:10We have no confidence that the psycho girlfriend is actually going to do something stable.
07:16None.
07:16But she said she was sorry.
07:17I don't believe her.
07:20Once a psycho, always a psycho.
07:22You know what?
07:23David and Kenny, I got one each for you.
07:25Who wants to go first?
07:26I'll go first.
07:27David?
07:28Selfish.
07:28Can we say Bryce Underwood will be the Big Ten MVP Player of the Year because of the
07:36backwards pass that he did in the spring game?
07:38We can definitely say that.
07:39That was the most brilliant play I've ever seen.
07:45No.
07:46No, we cannot say that.
07:48From the angle I saw, it looked like he was past the line of scrimmage.
07:52I also saw the linebacker coming to sack him.
07:55And of course, it's practice.
07:57So he lets up.
07:58So he wouldn't have been able to complete anything.
08:01No, it's propaganda.
08:02I don't want to see that.
08:03I love the fact.
08:05Hey, did you see this?
08:06Yes, I saw the clip.
08:07I did.
08:08You want to talk about the erosion of college sports?
08:10Remember when spring games used to be something big?
08:13Remember when National Signing Day used to be something big?
08:16The people who look only at the ratings, they'll point to the ratings.
08:21Ratings are great.
08:22And I'll point to you those special elements of college football that we all used to love.
08:27I don't even know when the spring games are anymore.
08:29They may not even play against each other in the spring game anymore.
08:32It's just running routes and drills.
08:35Well, now it's because either injury, but at least you can have spring games because last year, last two years,
08:42you couldn't have them because I'm not going to showcase somebody because the portal was open right after the spring
08:48game.
08:49So Mark Ryan goes out there and has this great game.
08:52And all of a sudden, there's a, you know, hey, Florida's called and said, hey, you want to come down
08:58and play?
08:58They're offering me more than the McGonagall ball.
09:00I'm out.
09:01They're not, they're not ethical.
09:03No.
09:03Kenny, for you.
09:04Yes.
09:06Based off of what's happened now in basketball and football, can we say that the Big Ten is past the
09:10SEC?
09:11No.
09:11Yeah.
09:13Oh, come on, Kenny.
09:14I'm as much of an SEC honk as you are.
09:17They floored past the SEC and left us holding the bag.
09:21You got to be kidding me.
09:23Three straight national championship wins in football versus three straight not even appearing in the game.
09:28You watched what March Madness looked like.
09:32Soared past the SEC in the NIL era.
09:36So my response to that will be, I'm looking more of what's the bell cow of college sports, and that's
09:43football.
09:44And SEC is, you could argue that they haven't had the late success that the Big Ten has.
09:50That's fair.
09:50I'll give you that.
09:51But they're a deeper conference.
09:53They have more, if most of the Big Ten teams played most of the SEC teams, it would not look
10:00very good for the Big Ten.
10:01If this, then that, it don't mean a thing unless you got that bling, brother.
10:04Hey, David, real quick sidebar here.
10:07I don't want Kenny to hear us.
10:08Here we go.
10:09Isn't this what the Big Ten used to say all the time?
10:11Yes.
10:12Well, there's so many of us, and we cannibalize each other.
10:15And, you know, blah, blah, blah, and stuff.
10:18You know what we don't have to say to that?
10:20Wah!
10:24I'm learning the wah.
10:25I'm learning it.
10:26I'm sinking it.
10:27Slowly but surely.
10:28That is, can we say, for a Monday here on Valenti and Rico.
10:36Coming to you.
10:36There we go.
10:38Nicely done, Rico.
10:39Nicely done.
10:39You have no idea how quickly Rico put that together as well.
10:42That was some solid work by you.
10:44I mean, that was overnight.
10:46Just boom.
10:47Well, thank you.
10:47Ready to roll.
10:48All right.
10:49Brad Holmes spoke up today.
10:51Are we buying or selling what he's saying ahead of the NFL draft?
10:56That's next here on 97.1.
