On Monday, Pope Leo XIV begins his first apostolic journey, choosing Africa as his destination. Over the next 10 days, the pope will travel nearly 18,000 kilometers and visit 11 cities in four countries. teleSUR

00:05We are going live to Africa, more specifically to Algeria, as the Pope Leo XIV continues his
00:11first apostolic journey in the African continent. He's currently, right now, we're seeing the live
00:15images in our screen. He's currently visiting the Mosque of Algiers, the Great Mosque of Algiers,
00:21one of the largest mosques that exists in the world, an iconic place, of course, for the Muslim
00:27religion. As we were saying, this is the first apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV. In his
00:33pontificate, his first trip, he decided to go to Africa, a trip that will take over 11 days,
00:38where he will visit several cities, bringing a message of peace. The main purpose of this
00:45apostolic journey is to bring a message of peace, of reconciliation. He also made it clear that
00:51he's going to make a way, he's going to try to make it possible to find new ways of coexistence
00:58between both the Catholic and the Muslim religion in this clear movement that represents that action.
01:05The Pope visiting one of the greatest, one of the largest mosques that exists in the world,
01:08the Great Mosque of Algiers, here in the capital of Algeria. As we were saying, the first country
01:13that the Pope Leo XIV is visiting in this 11-day first apostolic journey. Now the 11-day visit combines
01:23pastoral encounters with Catholic communities, with the meetings also with political leaders and civil
01:29society, and symbolic gestures, as the one we are witnessing right now, of interreligious dialogue
01:35and reconciliation. As we were saying, the itinerary reflects a focus on peace, youth engagement, and
01:41a shared social mission across Africa. We're saying the Pope now holding talks with the leadership,
01:49with the religious leadership at this, we were saying, this Great Mosque in Algiers, the capital of
01:55Algeria, as they are holding conversations. Now this happens after the Pope previously, earlier,
02:05in the day, met with the president of Algeria, and after he was received by highest authorities at the
02:12international, at the international airport, at the Touhoude-Bountedienne International Airport,
02:19then as part of the work agenda of this first apostolic journey, they went on to exchange with different
02:26authorities and different society across the capital in different activities that were scheduled. Now as we
02:33were saying, the Pope, earlier to this visit to this Great Mosque, met with the president of Algeria,
02:40and also other representatives of government and civil society, and the diplomatic corps at the Yama
02:46Elda Sahir Conference Center, in a gesture that highlighted the importance of interreligious dialogue in the
02:53Muslim-majority country. Pope Leo XIV is also expected to hold meetings with members of the local Catholic
03:02community at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa, following, after the conclusion of this visit to the
03:10great apostolic, to this great mosque in Algiers. Now according to his travel itinerary on Tuesday,
03:18April 14th, the Pope, that belongs member of the Order of Saint Augustine, is also going to travel to
03:25Anaba, another area of Algeria. He is going to visit there the historic archaeological site of Hippo
03:31Regus, which is closely associated with Saint Augustine of Hippo, and later on he is expected to meet with
03:41the elderly that are carried by the Little Sisters of the Poor before celebrating a grand mass at the
03:48Basilica of Saint Augustine. We recall that this first apostolic journey which takes place over a
03:5511 days. He will visit four countries in Africa, Algeria being the first, and he will then continue
04:04on Wednesday, April 15th, he will continue to his apostolic journey, his first apostolic journey,
04:10traveling to Yunde, the capital of Cameroon, where he will continue with this important, as we were saying,
04:17the first apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV in his pontificate, bringing a message of peace and
04:23interreligious coexistence, especially in the current context that the world is experiencing with the
04:29Middle East crisis following the war, the US-Israeli war against Iran, where the Pope has also expressed
