00:00My journey thus far has taken me from the skies to the water and now to the
00:05desert for a taste of the Baja 500. And it was living up to its reputation as one
00:14of the most treacherous off-road races on the planet.
00:18Everything stopped in seconds. I was in complete shock.
00:30Are you okay? Yeah, I'm fine.
00:34Being strapped in had helped us survive the bone-jarring impact.
00:38But I fear the journey of this project was over before it really began.
00:43And then...
00:48They immediately jumped in to help because that's the Mexican way.
00:54And just like that, after seeing my life blush before my eyes, thanks to the Mexican people who are back in the race.
01:13Oh my God, the people are the best!
01:16Viva Mexico! Viva Mexico!
01:19Viva Mexico!
01:27Wow, dude, that was nuts.
01:29Yeah, it's gonna be like that, dude. You gotta be careful.
01:32Okay.
01:33We don't want to get hurt.
01:34Gabe was right.
01:36The smallest mistake out here can have serious consequences.
01:40Crashes are a constant every year.
01:42And not everybody is as lucky as we were.
01:48We had survived the crash, but it soon became apparent that the car wasn't handling right.
01:52Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop. This is our pit right here.
01:56Pull up, pull up.
01:57Hey, something's wrong with the right front tire!
01:59We flipped!
02:00Are we on fire?
02:01Oh, no. Oh.
02:02Oh, .
02:03This is bad.
02:08I think it's out.
02:09Are we good?
02:10Are we good?
02:11We're good.
02:12Thank you, guys.
02:13Three, two, one.
02:14We go!
02:15Go!
02:16To the right.
02:17To the right.
02:18To the right.
02:19Not only was this the most difficult driving I have ever done, but it was the most stressful,
02:30knowing I wasn't just responsible for my own life, but for Gabes, too.
02:35It's gonna get goadier.
02:37You can see the terrain that we've gotten into now.
02:40It's all rocks.
02:41It's hard on our body.
02:43It's hard on the car, too.
02:44This is where axles break.
02:48We had been racing over intense terrain in the blazing sun for hours, and we weren't even
02:53close to be finished.
02:54These had been the hardest miles of my life, but the worst was yet to come.
02:59I'm completely exhausted.
03:02The sun is getting hit.
03:04At any moment, this is dark.
03:11As night fell, so did the last of my energy.
03:16My focus was fading, the road blurring before me, and that was the least of my problems.
03:21Wow, I can't see.
03:22The brutality of the race took its toll on my body and my mind.
03:37It has been almost 12 hours since I started the race, and it was more than clear that I wasn't gonna make the 18-hour cutoff.
03:49Understanding the very thin line between pushing your limits and safety is very difficult, and it seemed for the first time, making the decision to stop was the wisest.
03:56So, we pulled out of the course and made our way back to Ensenada.
04:03As we approached the city, my disappointment at being among that 45% who didn't finish the race was real.
04:13I'm exhausted.
04:14But it didn't last.
04:15The real victory was simply having the guts to start.
04:25To be part of the rare brotherhood of athletes who dared to take one of the most punishing races on Earth.
04:31After hundreds of miles of pain, dust, and adrenaline rush, processing this adventure was a mix of relief, pride, and honestly just pure emotion.
05:04¡Vivense nada!
05:05La verdad, muchas felicidades.
05:07Está impresionante esto, de ir loco.
05:10¡Viva México!
05:11¡Viva México!
05:12¡Viva México!
05:13¡Viva México!
05:14¡Viva México!
05:15¡Viva México!
05:16¡Viva México!
05:17¡Viva México!
05:18¡Viva México!
05:19¡Viva México!
05:20¡Viva México!
05:21¡Viva México!
05:22ultimate test cliff diving cliff diving is one of the world's most punishing sports athletes
05:30launch themselves from dizzying heights of upwards of 100 feet flipping and twisting
05:35through the air before slamming into the surface at speeds greater than 55 miles an hour
05:45now at these heights if anything goes wrong and it does
05:49a lot it's like hitting concrete
05:57broken ribs concussions dislocated shoulders spinal injuries and drowning they're all part of the risk
06:04oh no
06:21it's time gonna be simon cliff diving traces its roots back to the 1700s when a hawaiian chief ordered his
06:28warriors to leap from cliffs to prove their courage centuries later in 1930s acapulco mexico in la
06:35quebrada cliff divers wild crowds and brought the sport into the spotlight then in 2009 the red bull
06:42cliff diving world series launched cementing its place as a premier professional circuit worldwide
06:47la idea de este deporte es que quiero aprender a hacer una pilota hacia atrás
06:51es concreto el mar ahí sí el agua por eso caen con los pies
07:02i traveled to fort lauderdale florida for the first step of my cliff diving adventure arriving at the
07:08world-renowned fort lauderdale aquatic center
07:11all right what's up ellie smart is one of the top professional high divers in the world competing
07:19in the red bull cliff diving world series since 2017. she's earned multiple podium finishes and
07:25ranked third overall in 2022. she is a fearless athlete who thrives on leaping from towering heights
07:32into the unknown welcome to the international swimming hall of fame oh my god it's higher than
07:37i expected yeah it's really big wow so are you you think are you gonna do this what is the worst
07:43possible scenario so i don't want to scare you but i want to be honest i have seen more of my friends
07:49get knocked unconscious than i would like to admit first i'm going to take you up the tower
07:56so this is where i come every day and train oh my god this is so high what is this so we are in
08:05the 10 meter this is the olympic platform oh this is 10 so this is 33 feet wow this is insane
08:13looking down from this height was giving me a full-on panic attack just breathe oh if i could barely
08:21look over the edge there was just no way i could ever jump from here i wait
08:31it was time to stop talking and start jumping ellie had a plan step one get comfortable jumping from
08:38heights in the safety of a pool step two try it in the wild in an uncontrolled environment step three
08:45back to the pool to work up to doing back flips from a diving board step four the real test back flip
08:51off a cliff okay there we go so i'll call one that means it's your turn to go and you're just gonna go
08:59jump okay ready ready one that means you can go got it
09:09i think that was pretty good now we are gonna go to three meter
09:12okay that was a good first one but you leaned forward a little bit so just because you're higher
09:23yeah doesn't mean you need to jump out farther okay only different thing when you jump just jump
09:28and stay a little bit tighter core glutes we're gonna focus
09:31did you touch the bottom i did that's good that didn't even look like the same person that went the
09:42first time it definitely helped have the core this was way better okay good i think i felt comfortable
09:49i could try higher okay let's work all right up we need to be a little bit more focused yeah we're
09:55gonna have to work on being tighter and don't be a loose noodle we are up here on the seven and a
10:01half meters now you're gonna start feeling the drop like you're gonna be like oh i'm still in the
10:06air so when you have that thought what do you do yes you ready for this
10:11that was a rip entry he's way at the bottom of the pool i was feeling good about my progress that
10:39was like a 10 entry that's exactly what you want but the thought of going even higher was terrifying
10:46he's definitely ready for 10 meters but this is a scary jump
10:51we are at the olympic height 10 meters 33 feet i would say the most difference you're going to feel
10:58with this height is that you really are going to feel yourself falling longer in the air like there's
11:04going to be that oh my gosh i haven't hit the water moment and then like you might have that thought
11:08twice okay this is something that the majority of humans don't ever do on the planet you know what i
11:22mean yep arms out tight stomach just up and down
11:46we go
11:52what was that feeling like really don't man yeah really turn out every possible noise yeah and just
12:17commit so tomorrow we have a special activity planned okay not going to give it away right now
12:26but you should definitely get your rest tonight
12:32it was day two of my cliff diving quest and i couldn't wait to see exactly what ellie had in store for
12:37me it's officially time to go on our first real adventure together yes i know i'm excited i love
12:45adventures there's two sides to cliff diving okay one is the in the pool training for competition yeah
12:51and then the other side of it is going out and discovering places and cliffs and doing things that
12:57you just never knew you were going to do yeah so
13:01look forward what do you see
13:03so we don't have a lot of cliffs in florida jumping off a bridge what it's not illegal i will not get
13:20deported oh it's tall metal it's tall ladder that goes up yeah that's our entry point that is how we are
13:27going to climb up as if jumping off a bridge wasn't dangerous enough i needed to make sure
13:33i didn't kill myself climbing up to the jumping spot
13:46come on guys oh my god of all the dangers of jumping from a bridge this one i didn't really expect you
13:54guys have a permit to be on the bridge
14:01what's going on guys oh my god we gotta have a permit to be on that bridge like that not only did i
14:08not want to get arrested but seeing the police reminded me why they don't allow bridge divers
14:13because it's dangerous there's a lot of boat traffic coming through here i don't want you falling over
14:19and then the current texts you and then you're gonna eat you by a vessel you don't say so sorry
14:23i did not realize you needed that is it okay if we do one and then leave that's fine yeah jump in
14:29and you can get on the best after that right okay i appreciate it man you're literally getting a full
14:33on click on experience because this is what happens they tell you and then you just say oh i'm so
14:38sorry i didn't know yeah and then you go do it so let's go okay let's go
14:45okay okay so this is a quick mission so it's like 33 feet yeah so that's exactly 10 meters 10 meters
14:56ellie had scouted the area to make sure the landing zone was clear but you can never be certain i'm
15:01ready i'm ready yeah you come down okay three two one jump
15:21that was amazing
15:23welcome to the club you are officially a cliff diver now i truly i'm a bridge diver
15:35i think i tasted the rush of doing it in the wild even though it's 10 times scarier it's 10 times
15:41better right we love the lion girl we love ellie
15:47i went back to my casa at ciudad de mexico for the next step of my journey i will be training at the
15:53mexican olympic training center for diving my goal learning to do a backflip so i could try it off
15:59a 35 foot cliff in just two days hola
16:05welcome to mexico
16:10your girls been catching up oh yeah if i was going to master the backflip there was no one better to
16:16teach me that mexican olympian and three-time red bull world series runner-up adi jimenez
16:23okay let's do this okay yeah get your wings one foot on one one foot on the other because here's
16:29the thing when you're on a cliff you're not gonna have a consistent same takeoff so how can you adapt
16:34got when your feet feel a little uncomfortable got it remember when we said less tight shoulders
16:42tighter core glutes and the jumps it's the same thing here to execute a backflip off a cliff i had to
16:48follow a plan first learn to jump backwards off the board next master falling and arching through
16:53the air and finally go for the full backflip and land solidly on my feet
16:59jumping backwards of a board was trickier than i expected
17:05i sort of had to push past the disorienting feeling of not seeing where i was headed and trust my body's
17:10position in the air definitely not back jump is the worst it's scary yeah like i think the flip is
17:15less scary than doing that yes because it's a long time like doing nothing
17:21i mean yeah go to seven yes gradually i learned how to push up strong and straight keep my body aligned
17:32control my arms and trust the leap until i was finally ready to jump backwards from 10 meters the olympic
17:38height
17:51next was a back dive don't look early finish the jump
17:57i didn't trust myself hesitated and lost complete control
18:01i knew that's gonna happen if this happens from 10 meters i can literally break my neck
18:09you know what i do if it stings go underwater and scream it helps
18:13this time i had kicked my legs backwards and under rotated landing on my head and neck
18:24the point is i had to land vertically and i wasn't able to control my rotation
18:33you just pulled back too hard and pulled your legs over
18:41i only had two days in this pool if i couldn't nail the backflip here
18:46trying it off a cliff would be suicide i will tell you what you're gonna feel one two and you'll have
18:53to feel your legs behind you thank you high heels chale
18:57i don't know when he doesn't overthink it's easier for him i think the falling and then jumping helps a lot too
19:13back dive check tomorrow a backflip was in my sight
19:16it's go time you guys this was my first attempt to a full back flip the thing is you need at least
19:31seven meters to make a full rotation which means the very first time i was already leaping from a
19:37dangerous height okay let's go you're ready to go higher
20:08this was it a backflip from 10 meters i have learned so much since yesterday but i couldn't
20:15get out of my head the fact that if i forgot one small thing i could end up in the hospital okay
20:22i'm in position core core and smooth three two one
20:29i'm in position three two one my heart was in my throat over rotate and the flat impact can rupture
20:42organs under rotate and the head first entry risks a concussion or broken neck
20:47we got a diver on our hands today you're a diver tomorrow you'll become a cliff diver
21:08happy with my progress in mexico city i flew to red in california for my ultimate test
21:13a 35 foot high backflip off a rocky cliff
21:28so how are you feeling about today you feel a lot more nervous the heart beating is higher
21:33i've been going over in my mind the steps core one two the biggest thing that is going to change is
21:40going to be the lack of control that i've been having i might have to jump a little bit further
21:57the height might be a little bit higher at the end of the day it is still dangerous i mean it's a
22:03different element than the pool it's your body it's your life you're the only person that can make the
22:08call of one is a moment we're officially on the back country route to get to the cliff
22:18i feel the terrain i know it's crazy you honestly need something like a toyota 4runner to be able
22:25to get to these spots because it is insane so we're good we brought this baby yeah
22:39okay welcome to middle mcleod falls i love it
22:46are you starting to like feel it i can for sure feel the energy of the waterfall i hear it it's powerful
22:52okay are you ready to get your first look at it ah okay can you hear it yet three two one damn it's
23:02incredible
23:06so where are we jumping from exactly if you look down here do you kind of see this ledge that's kind
23:11of where we're going no doing a back flip from that height wow that is so high was those rocks wait i
23:21don't know about this i was seriously doubting whether i could do it or not
23:51you
