00:00:00I
00:00:30Near Brambridge Town, the county down, one morning last July
00:00:35Down a boring green came a sweet Colleen, and she smiled as she passed me by
00:00:39Oh, she looked so sweet with the two bare feet, and she never looked round her
00:00:44Such a coaxing girl, I'd shake myself to make sure I was standing there
00:00:48Singing from Battery Bay up to Derry Cay, from the hallway to Dublin Town
00:00:53No maid I've seen like a fair Colleen that I met in the county down
00:00:57I see on which bed, well I shook me head, and I locked with a feeling queer
00:01:02And I said, says I, to a passerby, who's the one with the not brown hair
00:01:06Well, he smiled at me, and with pride, said he, that's the gem of Ireland's crown
00:01:11No news of a camp, the banks of the Banshees, the star of the county down
00:01:15From Battery Bay up to Derry Cay, from the hallway to Dublin Town
00:01:19No maid I've seen like a fair Colleen that I met in the county down
00:01:24At the Harvest Fair I'll be surely there, and I'll listen me Sunday close
00:01:33With me shoes shone bright, and me hat cut right for a smile from the nut brown rose
00:01:37No horse and yoke, I'll fight by a smuggle in the soil, like the plough turned brown
00:01:42And the smiling bride by my own far side is the star of the county down
00:01:46From Battery Bay up to Derry Cay, from the hallway to Dublin Town
00:01:50No maid I've seen like a fair Colleen that I met in the county down
00:01:55From Battery Bay up to Derry Cay, from the hallway to Dublin Town
00:01:59No maid I've seen like a fair Colleen that I met in the county down
00:02:04Now ladies and gentlemen, let's have a welcome for Pops-O-C-U-T
00:02:20Now ladies and gentlemen, let's have a welcome for Pops-O-C-U-T
00:02:32Good evening folks, good evening, good evening, good evening
00:02:44Welcome to The Little Show
00:02:47Where tonight
00:02:49We are all been buried with our hurleys by the river de soar
00:02:56It's a 2026 GA special
00:02:58We have
00:03:01A great one coming your way
00:03:04We have an all-star line-up
00:03:05We have an all-star studio audience
00:03:07All togged out and ready to go
00:03:09And by the looks of it, they're all just three pairs of roller skates
00:03:15And a juggler away from a county parade
00:03:17So strap yourselves in
00:03:19On the team tonight
00:03:21Forget the Beckhams, forget the Kardashians
00:03:23GAA royalty
00:03:24The Brogans will be here
00:03:27All four All-Ireland Club champions will be on the team sheet
00:03:33And we will be reliving some of the greatest GA moments of all time
00:03:51All of which have taken place in the greatest stadium on planet Earth
00:03:56Croke Park
00:03:58There it is
00:03:59There it is
00:04:01In all its glory folks
00:04:03Who can forget
00:04:04Stephen Cluckton's last minute winner in 2011
00:04:07Jimmy Barry Murphy's net buster in 1973
00:04:10Beyonce's historic win in 2016
00:04:13And me sitting on the bench for Down Miners in 1987
00:04:17It's an all-time
00:04:20Tonight
00:04:21We have plucked two lucky members from our studio audience coming in
00:04:27They are now on the hallow turf
00:04:29They're about to make their own history
00:04:30Jackie Hurley is standing beside the witness
00:04:33This great GA moment
00:04:35Good evening, Jackie
00:04:36Good evening, Paddy
00:04:40It might be wet
00:04:41It might be windy
00:04:42It might be an empty Croke Park
00:04:44But I tell you what
00:04:44That is not going to dampen our spirits tonight
00:04:46Because as you said
00:04:47We have got two very lucky members of our audience tonight
00:04:50Who have got the chance of a lifetime
00:04:52To potentially kick a point here in Croke Park
00:04:55We've got Lee McQuaid from Fermanagh
00:04:56You play a bit of ball yourself, Lee, do you?
00:04:58I used to play a wee bit, yeah
00:04:59Retired ten months ago when we had our second week here
00:05:03Lovely
00:05:04Well, your family have long history playing in this stadium though, yes?
00:05:07Yeah, I had five siblings
00:05:08That's all played in Croke Park
00:05:10And this is finally my chance now
00:05:12Well, tonight is your chance to do them a bit of a history of your own
00:05:16We wish you well with that
00:05:17Antoinette Riggs from Galway is also with us
00:05:19And Antoinette, you play football as well yourself?
00:05:21Yes, Jackie, I play with Monavay Abbey
00:05:24Gaelic for Mothers in County Galway
00:05:26And I also played with Anna Down, GAA, where I'm formerly from
00:05:31Ah, fabulous
00:05:32And how are you feeling about potentially kicking a ball over that bar?
00:05:35Hopefully I get a chance
00:05:36Might be my last chance ever to kick a ball over
00:05:39Well, every chance matters, that is for sure
00:05:42As you can see, they're going to be battling all kinds of conditions here, Paddy
00:05:45But the big thing is, can they kick it for a ticket?
00:05:48An All-Ireland final ticket?
00:05:50We will find out very, very soon
00:05:52If they don't let go of those umbrellas, they could be blowing over the posts themselves
00:06:04We'll be back to see how they get on a little bit later in the show
00:06:07But first, it's time to relive some of the other all-time greatest GAA moments
00:06:12With a woman who, with four All-Irelands and 11 All-Stars
00:06:15Has brought us plenty herself
00:06:16And a man who has commentated on them all for four decades
00:06:20Would you please welcome Cora Staunton and Marty Morrison
00:06:22Thank you
00:06:37They must all be from Clare
00:06:47They must all be from Clare
00:06:49Feel the love, Cora
00:06:50Feel the love, Marty
00:06:51Awfully
00:06:52Up the rebel
00:06:53Up the rebel
00:06:55I think it must be for the pink jacket, is it, yeah?
00:06:59I think, I think, well look, to be honest with you, I think there's a lot of love
00:07:02Well, hello, hello, hello
00:07:03Somebody in this audience has great taste, that's all I'd say
00:07:07You don't get a whistle like that, do you, Patrick?
00:07:10No, I don't, but we can very much change this item to blind date
00:07:14At any point you choose, Marty
00:07:15Cora, we're talking the greatest ever GAA moments
00:07:19You have made plenty yourself
00:07:22You changed the game
00:07:24You took the ball, you completely rammed it
00:07:28Tell us the age you made your senior, I was reading this in the week again
00:07:32When did you make your senior debut?
00:07:35A long time ago now, but I was, yeah, very young at the time
00:07:38I was just 13 and a half
00:07:40So, quite young
00:07:42Obviously, rules nowadays don't allow you to play until in your first year minor
00:07:47But, yeah, 13 years of age
00:07:49Probably the biggest thing I'd done in my first National League game was kick 2-5
00:07:53So, that was probably the worst thing I could have done
00:07:56Because I put a lot of pressure on for the next, whatever I played with Mayo
00:07:59I think was 24 years more after that
00:08:01So, yeah, quite young
00:08:03But at the time it was allowed
00:08:05And I suppose I had six or seven years experience of playing with the boys
00:08:09Because we didn't have a local girls team
00:08:10So, that certainly hardened me up
00:08:12And got me ready for senior inter-county football
00:08:14I mean, look, you've played everywhere you've played
00:08:16In Australia, you've played in the WACA, the MCG
00:08:18Does anything compare to running out to Crow Park All-Ireland Final Day?
00:08:21No, absolutely not
00:08:22For me, it doesn't anyways
00:08:24And I suppose the biggest example we've seen in the last few weeks
00:08:28Is Mark O'Connor, obviously, who's playing AFL in Australia
00:08:31Come back to play with Dingle
00:08:33You know, that's where you want to play
00:08:35Growing up, I never dreamed of playing in Australia
00:08:37I used to be out in the backyard and regularly
00:08:40You know, trying to kick points
00:08:42My idol growing up was a Kerry man, Morris Fitzgerald
00:08:45So, even though he broke me out of hearts many a time
00:08:48I wanted to be him and I wanted to be in Crow Park
00:08:50I don't think I ever wanted to win in All-Ireland
00:08:52Or had that aspiration
00:08:53But I always wanted to get there
00:08:54And, you know, thankfully
00:08:56Got there early in my career
00:08:57With Mayo and won a couple of All-Irelands
00:09:00Which was nice
00:09:00I mean, last year was another huge year for the ladies' game
00:09:03How far has it come in the last few years?
00:09:05It really seems to be leaps and bounds
00:09:07Yeah, it's came on a huge amount
00:09:09I suppose when you look back
00:09:10My first All-Ireland was, what, 27 years ago
00:09:13There was 15,000 at it
00:09:15My last All-Ireland was in 2017
00:09:17We had nearly 50,000
00:09:18And the game has grown so much
00:09:20I'm very excited for the year ahead
00:09:22Because obviously the ladies have taken up
00:09:23A lot of the new rules
00:09:24That was brought into the Men's Championship last year
00:09:26And you've seen by watching it
00:09:28What has done to the game
00:09:29So, you know, it's more physical contact
00:09:31What players wanted
00:09:32So, yeah, really looking forward to the year ahead
00:09:34And the game has come on leaps and bounds
00:09:36And it's great to see, as I said
00:09:38My role model growing up was a male
00:09:40Now you have young girls growing up
00:09:42That has plenty of female role models to look up to
00:09:44Which is brilliant
00:09:45I mean, Marty, you have the best job
00:09:48The best seat in the house
00:09:49For all of these moments
00:09:50You've seen them come
00:09:52You've seen them go
00:09:53Compared to your first ever commentary position
00:09:55How does the commentary box at Crow Park compare?
00:10:00Well, it's a privilege
00:10:01It's an honour
00:10:01When you're handed the microphone
00:10:03When I was handed the first time
00:10:05I said, did Michal O'Hare use this microphone?
00:10:08Did Michal O'Hare use this microphone?
00:10:09Because they were my idols
00:10:10And it was just wonderful to be there
00:10:12I was just thinking about Cora
00:10:13Like I used to imagine
00:10:14After we watched Michal O'Hare
00:10:16Commentation in the All-Ireland Final
00:10:17On the TV
00:10:18And I go out
00:10:19And I would imagine
00:10:21That I scored the winning goal
00:10:23In the All-Ireland Final
00:10:24And marched behind the R10 band
00:10:25And somehow it never actually happened
00:10:27Was that due to a lack of talent?
00:10:30I would think so
00:10:30But I think that's the beauty of my dream
00:10:34Was once I got the bug of broadcasting
00:10:37That was what I wanted to do
00:10:39And it's a privilege to do it
00:10:40Well, I mean, you got the bug, you know, early on
00:10:42We have a little photograph here
00:10:45Of one of Marty's first commentary appearances
00:10:48People, a lot of love for the pink jacket
00:10:51Talk us through this
00:10:53Only fools and horses look
00:10:55Yeah
00:10:55Well, I have to say
00:10:58That is the sexiest jacket
00:11:00That's ever been seen
00:11:01In the All-Ireland H.O.
00:11:03And myself and Pascal Brooke
00:11:04Started back in 1984
00:11:06Patrick Galvin got a good time
00:11:08Local postman asked me
00:11:09To know what I do
00:11:09A commentary
00:11:10On the under-21 football final
00:11:12Between my club
00:11:12Kilmurray of Brickham
00:11:13And Miltow Malbae
00:11:14And I said, absolutely not
00:11:15I'd be useless
00:11:16I had no ambition in it
00:11:17I was not one of these guys
00:11:18That listened to myself
00:11:19On a tape recorder
00:11:20So I went down to Dumbag
00:11:21In pouring rain
00:11:22And it was awful
00:11:24My commentary was awful
00:11:26And it was
00:11:27When I look back on it
00:11:29Because I didn't know
00:11:29Whether it was
00:11:30My Hall of H.O.
00:11:30Or Mary Hartley
00:11:30Because I was saying
00:11:32You know, I was kind of
00:11:33Putting on an accent
00:11:33And I said
00:11:34God, I can't
00:11:35I can't keep this up
00:11:36So they showed the video
00:11:38In the local bar
00:11:39And they charged 50 pence in
00:11:41I think they should have
00:11:42Been charging 50 pence out
00:11:43But anyway
00:11:44I got the bug
00:11:45My second game was in Thurlis
00:11:47For the Munster Club final
00:11:48Between Six Mile Braids
00:11:49And Patrick's Well
00:11:50And that's really
00:11:51Where I got the bug
00:11:52And I tried
00:11:53And I tried
00:11:54I tried four years
00:11:55Knocking on the door here
00:11:56Because R.T. was the only place
00:11:58Really
00:11:58And it was difficult to get in
00:12:01Some people around the country
00:12:02Would say
00:12:02Wish to God they kept him out
00:12:03But I finally got in
00:12:05And Frank Whelan
00:12:06And Tim O'Connor
00:12:07Gave me my job
00:12:08And I'm there since
00:12:09And every day
00:12:10It doesn't matter where it is
00:12:12But to hold the microphone
00:12:13Is a privilege
00:12:14Well look
00:12:14You've commentated
00:12:15And you know
00:12:16Helped make some of these moments
00:12:17By bringing
00:12:18You know
00:12:19Legendary commentary to it
00:12:20Cora
00:12:21You've made
00:12:21Legendary moments yourself
00:12:22We could be here all night
00:12:24I mean
00:12:24This is what GA fans do
00:12:26Up and down the country
00:12:27In bars
00:12:27And you know
00:12:29Over the weekend
00:12:30What's the best moment
00:12:32We're putting you on the spot
00:12:33Okay
00:12:34What do you think
00:12:35What is your favourite moment
00:12:36What's the greatest moment
00:12:37Well I suppose the greatest moment
00:12:39In the history
00:12:40In the history
00:12:40Of the GA
00:12:41I suppose
00:12:42My heroes
00:12:44Were the Kerry football team
00:12:45Yeah
00:12:45The Bomber Liston
00:12:46Jack O'Shea
00:12:47Pat Spillard
00:12:47What a team
00:12:48And just unbelievable
00:12:49And they were going for
00:12:50Five in a row
00:12:5082
00:12:5182
00:12:51And the last ball
00:12:53Came in
00:12:54As we all here
00:12:55Described it
00:12:56From Richie Connor
00:12:56Into Seamus Derby
00:12:57The big debate
00:12:58Did he push
00:12:59Or did he not
00:12:59I'm not going to go into that
00:13:00Behave yourself now
00:13:01Yeah
00:13:01But Offaly is a wonderful county
00:13:03Not because my friend
00:13:04Is the footballer
00:13:04Thank you very very much
00:13:07But I mean
00:13:09They're the only county in Ireland
00:13:10To have all stars
00:13:11In every position
00:13:11For a small county
00:13:12I know they inspired
00:13:14My own county
00:13:15To try and go
00:13:15And win the All-Ireland
00:13:16But anyway
00:13:171982
00:13:17Seamus Derby
00:13:18And I have a hurling moment
00:13:20As well
00:13:20But the football one
00:13:21Is Seamus Derby
00:13:22Scoring that winning goal
00:13:23Against Kerry
00:13:23Okay
00:13:23Let's have a look
00:13:25A high-laping
00:13:26Dropping ball
00:13:27In towards the goal
00:13:28A shot
00:13:29And a goal
00:13:30A goal
00:13:31A goal
00:13:32For Offaly
00:13:33There was a goal
00:13:34In the game
00:13:35A goal
00:13:36People in Kerry
00:13:39Jerseys
00:13:40Leaving the audience
00:13:41There as we speak
00:13:41Eugene McGee
00:13:42The manager
00:13:43He did an interview
00:13:44Either before or afterwards
00:13:45And he was asked
00:13:46I think by the late Mick Dunn
00:13:47And you know
00:13:49What would this mean
00:13:50For Offaly to win the All-Ireland
00:13:51He says
00:13:51Well no Mick
00:13:52They've trained twice a week
00:13:54And to be honest with you
00:13:55They haven't touched
00:13:56A drop of drink
00:13:57Since Wednesday
00:13:57And that was the era
00:13:59That was the time
00:14:00Not I'm talking about drink
00:14:01But I'm just talking about
00:14:02It was training twice a week
00:14:03Play a match
00:14:04And that was it
00:14:04But the other moment for me
00:14:06To give a hurling moment
00:14:07Is a game I love
00:14:08Is 1987
00:14:09Munster Championship
00:14:10Cork against Limerick
00:14:11What a goal this is
00:14:13John
00:14:13You can't hardly see it
00:14:14And he scored the goal
00:14:16Look at this
00:14:17Put it in right
00:14:18Comes for John Fenton
00:14:20Oh what a brilliant goal
00:14:22Unbelievable
00:14:26Well I mean it hasn't been done
00:14:32Really before or since
00:14:33So that shows you
00:14:34How good that was
00:14:35And that's the beauty
00:14:36Of ground hurling
00:14:36Which we don't see enough of now
00:14:38I mean John Fenton
00:14:39Is now chairman of Middleton
00:14:40But that ball
00:14:41That he struck in Thurlis
00:14:41Was against the late
00:14:42Tommy Quaid
00:14:43One of the nicest
00:14:44Gentleman I knew
00:14:45But also one of the
00:14:46Greatest goalkeepers
00:14:46And I mean nobody saw it
00:14:49Nobody was saying that
00:14:50So they're my two moments
00:14:51And there's many of them
00:14:52Stephen Cluxton's winning point
00:14:54I mean I love David Clifford
00:14:56We're still waiting
00:14:57To mention something about Mayo
00:14:58No no no no
00:14:59Well how about now
00:15:00Let me think
00:15:01Let me think
00:15:02Not just from all of us
00:15:03Well look
00:15:03While he's thinking
00:15:04While he's thinking about Mayo
00:15:05Cora can you give us a moment
00:15:09You know obviously
00:15:11You've played in Crow Park
00:15:12You've made moments yourself
00:15:14I believe you've got one
00:15:15Which was redemption for you
00:15:17Yeah I suppose
00:15:18I picked a personal moment
00:15:19From one of the All-Irelands
00:15:20In 2002
00:15:22When we won the All-Ireland
00:15:24We had lost the All-Ireland
00:15:25The year before
00:15:25In 2001
00:15:26Against Sleash
00:15:27Myself and the goalkeeper
00:15:29At the time
00:15:29Were probably the cause
00:15:30Of us losing
00:15:31A free was given away
00:15:32For a rule
00:15:33That we were unsure of
00:15:34And 47 seconds on the clock
00:15:36The clock was backed in
00:15:37And Leach put the ball
00:15:38Over the bar
00:15:39And we lost
00:15:39So came back
00:15:40And won the All-Ireland
00:15:41The following year in 2002
00:15:42And it was an extra special year
00:15:44For me because
00:15:44Obviously club is what
00:15:46It's all about
00:15:46Eight weeks after
00:15:47We had won the
00:15:48All-Ireland here at Mayo
00:15:50We went on and won the club
00:15:52Or club All-Ireland
00:15:53With Carnacoon
00:15:54So two All-Ireland medals
00:15:55In eight weeks
00:15:56Was a lovely thing to do
00:15:57But yeah for me
00:15:59That was redemption
00:15:59I remember hugging
00:16:00Denise Horne
00:16:01Our goalkeeper
00:16:01Straight afterwards
00:16:02Because
00:16:03The two of us
00:16:03Would have taken
00:16:04A lot of abuse
00:16:05In the media
00:16:05For not knowing
00:16:06The rules
00:16:07Of picking the ball
00:16:08Up inside the 21s
00:16:09So yeah
00:16:10Any day in Crowe Park
00:16:11Especially in
00:16:11Twin and All-Ireland
00:16:12As us Mayo
00:16:13People know
00:16:13They're hard
00:16:14To win
00:16:15But yeah
00:16:15That was a really
00:16:16Extra special day
00:16:17We have a really good thing to do
00:16:18We have a really good thing to do
00:16:20We have another
00:16:22J moments that we think
00:16:24Deserves a mention
00:16:25When it comes to some of the greatest of all time
00:16:28We have a man who helped make it
00:16:29With us this evening
00:16:30Where is Terry Madigan?
00:16:34Where is Terry?
00:16:35How are you getting on Terry?
00:16:36I very well thank you
00:16:37Are you well?
00:16:38Hang on
00:16:38I'll sit on your knee
00:16:40That'll be okay
00:16:41There you are
00:16:42That's fine
00:16:42That's a cuddle
00:16:43You can nurse me
00:16:44You can nurse me
00:16:45Now tell me Terry
00:16:46About this amazing event
00:16:48That took place in 1986
00:16:49Down in Limerie
00:16:50We were looking to raise funds
00:16:52For our club
00:16:53And I was looking at different ideas
00:16:56A different way of doing it
00:16:57So we
00:16:59I contacted Guinness Book
00:17:02And looked to know
00:17:04If they'd accept a record
00:17:07If we did it
00:17:08And they said they would
00:17:09There was a few rules and regulations
00:17:10So you guys decided
00:17:11That you would play
00:17:13The longest Gaelic football match
00:17:15In history
00:17:16That is correct
00:17:17Yes
00:17:17Okay
00:17:17Which was going to take
00:17:1960 hours
00:17:20Yes
00:17:21Did anybody think you were mad?
00:17:24A lot of people thought I was mad
00:17:26Yes
00:17:26But it helped
00:17:27I can tell you
00:17:28But
00:17:29We were allowed no subs
00:17:31Whatsoever
00:17:32The same 14 staff
00:17:33That had finished
00:17:34Wow
00:17:34The
00:17:35If one guy got knocked out
00:17:38The Guinness people would accept that
00:17:40Because
00:17:41No but
00:17:41I'm just saying
00:17:42It could be for fatigue
00:17:43It could be injury
00:17:44Okay
00:17:45But if the second guy went
00:17:46At the same time
00:17:47The game was over
00:17:48And how did you convince anybody
00:17:50In your village
00:17:52To do this?
00:17:53It was so easy
00:17:54I went to 13 other guys
00:17:56And each one of them
00:17:57Within two minutes
00:17:58There you are
00:17:59Said
00:17:59We'll do it
00:18:01And we had
00:18:02The team
00:18:03Both teams
00:18:04Seven aside
00:18:05Picked within one night
00:18:07Okay
00:18:08We've all watched games
00:18:09That we've wanted to end
00:18:10How did it feel
00:18:11Towards the end
00:18:12For you guys
00:18:13Unbelievable
00:18:14Unbelievable
00:18:15Unbelievable
00:18:16But just to let me break it down
00:18:18Look this is actual footage here
00:18:20This is the
00:18:20All of the parish out
00:18:22There's a goal
00:18:24That's right yes
00:18:24Obviously there was
00:18:25A lot of backroom
00:18:27Staff
00:18:28There's the band
00:18:29Yes but
00:18:31Just to let you know
00:18:32At six o'clock
00:18:33On Friday morning
00:18:34We started playing
00:18:35We had to play
00:18:37All day Friday
00:18:38All night Friday night
00:18:40All day Saturday
00:18:41All day Saturday night
00:18:43And Sunday evening
00:18:44Until 6pm
00:18:46I believe there was a low point
00:18:48Yeah
00:18:48There was a point
00:18:54Where you needed a wee bit of support
00:18:57Off the sidelines
00:18:58Late in the evening
00:18:59Tell us about that
00:18:59That's correct
00:19:00Saturday night
00:19:00Was a horrible night
00:19:02It poured rain
00:19:03The morale went down
00:19:05Obviously
00:19:06And about one o'clock
00:19:07The wives came out
00:19:09They saw we were in trouble
00:19:10And they actually went around the field
00:19:12Calling us
00:19:13And supporting us
00:19:14Encouraging us
00:19:15And we just clicked in again
00:19:17And got going again
00:19:18But the medical team
00:19:20We had in the background
00:19:21Had a huge bearing also
00:19:22In the completion of it
00:19:25And do you remember the final score?
00:19:30I don't
00:19:31All I know is that
00:19:32We scored the exact same amount
00:19:36Pines 227 each
00:19:38We won by 100
00:19:40The team that won
00:19:41Won by 107 goals
00:19:43There was over
00:19:44There was
00:19:45There was over
00:19:461,100 goals scored
00:19:50There you go
00:19:50In the time
00:19:51And Terry will be part
00:19:52Of the new committee
00:19:53For the new rules
00:19:54Which are coming in
00:19:56This is all
00:19:57In a brilliant documentary
00:19:58Dockon won the longest game
00:20:00And RTA
00:20:01Give it up
00:20:01One more time
00:20:02For Terry
00:20:02Well played
00:20:03Brilliant
00:20:04You know Marty
00:20:13Just listening to that
00:20:14You know
00:20:14You go up and down
00:20:15The country
00:20:15You're in clubs
00:20:16Week after week
00:20:17That is just the type
00:20:18Of support
00:20:19And coming together
00:20:20Throughout the parishes
00:20:21You know
00:20:21And we've seen it
00:20:22This week as well
00:20:22With people coming together
00:20:24That the GA can help
00:20:25Yeah
00:20:25And in my travels
00:20:27I suppose I have my finger
00:20:28On the pulse
00:20:29Because I see what's happening
00:20:29There's a lot of
00:20:30Rural depopulation
00:20:32And I know before Christmas
00:20:33I did three reports
00:20:34One was
00:20:35I just wanted to give an idea
00:20:37Of what was happening
00:20:37Around the country
00:20:38Because there are challenges
00:20:39Particularly for the GA
00:20:40And indeed for other
00:20:41Sporting associations as well
00:20:42In South Kerry for instance
00:20:44Which has produced
00:20:45Mick O'Connell
00:20:45Mick O'Dewire
00:20:46The great Jack O'Connor
00:20:47Who I was having tea
00:20:48In his house last week
00:20:49And he makes lovely scones
00:20:49By the way
00:20:50Just beside the point
00:20:51But anyway
00:20:51That's an inside
00:20:52Exclusive story there
00:20:53But like
00:20:54In primary school
00:20:56In junior infants
00:20:57In September
00:20:58In 12 national schools
00:21:00There was only 83
00:21:02New pupils starting
00:21:03So you can see
00:21:04Where that would go
00:21:04In Cork
00:21:05There's a different situation
00:21:07Glen Rovers
00:21:07And the piercing
00:21:08In the north side of Cork City
00:21:09Are facing a situation
00:21:10Where once upon a time
00:21:11There were three or four
00:21:12Minor teams
00:21:12Now they've only got one
00:21:13It's the lack of buildings
00:21:15New houses being built
00:21:16Ballyvaland has 700 houses
00:21:18Being built at the moment
00:21:19But we now have
00:21:20Thanks be to God
00:21:21We have a multicultural
00:21:21Multi-international population
00:21:24Which means the volunteer
00:21:25In these clubs
00:21:25Will have a challenge
00:21:26And in contrast to that
00:21:28Because that could be said
00:21:29About any county
00:21:30I just happen to do it
00:21:31In contrast to that
00:21:32Dublin don't have
00:21:33They have too many people
00:21:35In some ways
00:21:36Their problem is facilities
00:21:37And you think of
00:21:38Great clubs like Kula
00:21:39Who didn't have a pitch
00:21:40And they were
00:21:41Taking out from
00:21:42The Dublin local authorities
00:21:43And they won the
00:21:44All-Ireland club
00:21:45Hurling and football
00:21:46Which shows you
00:21:47The spirit that is there
00:21:49It doesn't matter
00:21:50I'm from a small
00:21:50Fishing village
00:21:51On the west coast of Clare
00:21:52Football is what
00:21:53We live and breathe
00:21:54That's what makes us tick
00:21:56Now we love our
00:21:57Traditional music as well
00:21:58And our dancing
00:21:58But it's football
00:21:59Is the key
00:21:59And that's true
00:22:00Whether it's in
00:22:01Urban Ireland
00:22:01Like in Kula
00:22:02Suburb of Dublin
00:22:03And Dawki
00:22:04But there are challenges
00:22:05And to the great credit
00:22:06Of Croke Park
00:22:08They put together
00:22:09A committee
00:22:10Benny Hurl was the chairman
00:22:11And Dr Peter Horgan
00:22:12Was involved as well
00:22:13And they realise
00:22:14That they have
00:22:15Challenges ahead
00:22:16Amalgamations are now
00:22:17Popular
00:22:17Not popular
00:22:18But they're common
00:22:19Everywhere
00:22:19But I do believe
00:22:21That motions will come
00:22:22Before Congress
00:22:23In next month now
00:22:24Actually in February
00:22:25Which will allow
00:22:26Clubs and county boards
00:22:27To be a little bit
00:22:28More flexible
00:22:28Not to have 15 aside
00:22:29But maybe have 13 aside
00:22:31Or 11 aside
00:22:31So they are aware
00:22:33And to their credit
00:22:34They're taking on
00:22:34The challenge
00:22:35Cora
00:22:36We have talked
00:22:37About memories
00:22:38Here this evening
00:22:39You mentioned Mayo
00:22:40Earlier on
00:22:41Future memories
00:22:42Do we think
00:22:43There's a chance
00:22:43You might take the Mayo job
00:22:44And finally
00:22:45Get the job done
00:22:46I'm certainly
00:22:48Leaving that to Andy
00:22:49At the moment
00:22:49No we have a great man
00:22:51There
00:22:52And the enthusiasm
00:22:53And everything is back
00:22:55In Mayo
00:22:55Last weekend's victory
00:22:57In Pearce Stadium
00:22:58And Andy brings so much
00:22:59Energy and everything
00:23:00To it
00:23:01So I have a feeling
00:23:02It's going to be a good year
00:23:03For Andy and the Mayo team
00:23:04I don't want to put
00:23:05Too much pressure on them
00:23:05Is this the year?
00:23:07I'm not going to put
00:23:08Any pressure on them
00:23:09But no
00:23:10To answer your question
00:23:11You know
00:23:12In whatever amount
00:23:13Of years times
00:23:14I'd love to see
00:23:15Some female involved
00:23:16As an inter-county manager
00:23:17Wherever that is
00:23:18You know
00:23:19It's really really important
00:23:20I'm involved
00:23:21In a senior club team
00:23:22In Mayo
00:23:23There's not many
00:23:24Females coaching
00:23:25Within the whole of Ireland
00:23:26So it's really important
00:23:27That they're there
00:23:28Is it a dream
00:23:29Or an aspiration
00:23:30Who knows
00:23:31But you know
00:23:32I'd love to see
00:23:33Before I pass away
00:23:33That Mayo certainly
00:23:34Win the All-Ireland
00:23:35Anyways
00:23:35And I'd have to say
00:23:36Patrick
00:23:36Here
00:23:37I'd have to say
00:23:38If Mayo
00:23:41Mayo for Sam 2026
00:23:42Is what I would say
00:23:43But if Mayo win
00:23:44You don't have to have
00:23:45Any Mayo blood
00:23:45But it would be
00:23:46The biggest party
00:23:47In Ireland
00:23:48Ever
00:23:48In the history of Ireland
00:23:50Because everybody
00:23:50Would love to see
00:23:51Mayo win the All-Ireland
00:23:52That is the truth
00:23:53There you go
00:23:53Let's see
00:23:54Let's see
00:23:58I'm not too sure
00:24:00I'm sure
00:24:01There's a few Galway people
00:24:02That certainly
00:24:03Wouldn't like to see
00:24:04Well look
00:24:06We wish you all the best
00:24:08We wish Galway all the best
00:24:09We wish awfully all the best
00:24:10We wish Kerry all the best
00:24:12We wish you all
00:24:13All the best
00:24:14One more time
00:24:15Cora Stanton
00:24:16And Marty Morrissey
00:24:17And
00:24:23There'll not be a cow
00:24:25Milch for a week
00:24:26Where you are
00:24:27If you win this week's competition
00:24:28Here's how to get involved
00:24:29Roll it there
00:24:30Patrick
00:24:31Tonight's prize
00:24:32Celebrates the most
00:24:33Successful county
00:24:34In the history of the
00:24:35GAA All-Ireland
00:24:36Senior Football Championship
00:24:37Kerry
00:24:38And the kingdom
00:24:39Will roll out the red carpet

00:27:59Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive, Alive
00:28:08Look, guys, you know, the Kennedys, the Kardashians, the Brogans,
00:28:12what does it feel like to be part of a family dynasty?
00:28:17That's the lads. That's the lads.
00:28:19Yeah. What do you reckon, Bernard?
00:28:21Well, he started a party and, as you said, married a Kerry woman,
00:28:24so the Dublin-Kerry connection is a big part of it.
00:28:27But we grew up on tales of the Dublin-Kerry days
00:28:30and my dad scoring a big goal in Crowe Park that I hope you'll talk about.
00:28:34Oh, don't you worry. We're definitely going to talk about that.
00:28:37In a year of Kerry, man, it's nice to show a goal for the Dubs.
00:28:41Yeah, no, it's fair enough, but I didn't realise,
00:28:43because, you know, I grew up watching you and, you know,
00:28:47Hefo's army and the Dubs coming back from the ashes
00:28:50and that great rivalry in the 70s,
00:28:51I didn't realise that you went above and beyond
00:28:54to infiltrate the enemy, Bernard.
00:28:57Hard work. Yeah? Hard work, I did it.
00:29:00You can tell she's not here tonight when you're saying that.
00:29:02No, I'm not here tonight. I mean, I worked in Kerry for a year and a half
00:29:05and while we were down there, I met Jimmy Dane and Jimmy and she used to be Maria
00:29:08and we got married and this is the result here that's for us.
00:29:10And this is the result.
00:29:13So Bernard, of course, spoke about the goal.
00:29:17That was one of the first goals that I ever remember, you know,
00:29:20sitting on the carpet and done drum.
00:29:23This legendary goal, talk us through.
00:29:27Yeah, I mean, just as an aside, I mean,
00:29:30when I started playing with Dublin in 74, we hadn't played,
00:29:33we hadn't won a last championship match for five years, six years.
00:29:36So it was extraordinary the way the whole thing happened.
00:29:39And we won the All-Ireland in 74, I twisted my knee,
00:29:42I didn't play in 74, I had a crucial ligament in my knee.
00:29:46And all they're talking about was I worked on the oil rigs,
00:29:50which me and I made that famous thing, that comment about drilling for oil.
00:29:54I was in Cherbourg listening to the Leinster final on a cliff in a car,
00:30:02listening to the Leinster final in Cherbourg in 1977
00:30:06and I came back for the semi-final.
00:30:09And we all know where we were, we all know this amazing moment,
00:30:13an amazing goal, an amazing commentary.
00:30:15This is as good as it gets, take it away, Michael.
00:30:20In now to Bernard Brogan, he's in front of the goal,
00:30:23he can't miss, he hasn't.
00:30:35It's a goal, a goal, Bernard Brogan.
00:30:38He pays that for us every Christmas day.
00:30:40What, just every Christmas?
00:30:41I mean, when did you start realising what a hero this man was?
00:30:44I had a tough L coming up, so I had my dad and my two brothers.
00:30:50So obviously, I was late to the game,
00:30:53so they were well established when I got around.
00:30:55So, yeah, look, I was very lucky to be coming along.
00:31:00They guided me in the right direction, let's say.
00:31:03I mean, Alan, you went on to make your own history.
00:31:05Was it inevitable that you were going to follow this man's footsteps?
00:31:09Yeah, I think, like as Bernard said,
00:31:10I was always obviously in the house.
00:31:11And it's a question we've often been asked, was there pressure?
00:31:15So there was never any pressure.
00:31:16In fact, my dad actually managed my soccer team.
00:31:19That's how little pressure there was to play Gaelic football.
00:31:22But it's a question that's often been asked.
00:31:24I suppose there's a few things along the way,
00:31:26like my Uncle Jimmy was a selector on the team from 91 to 95.
00:31:30We used to travel to a lot of matches.
00:31:31So I suppose we were probably exposed to a lot of it.
00:31:34So that probably helped.
00:31:35Obviously, there's a little bit of kind of school and the club and all as well.
00:31:38And I think for myself, I started playing in 2002 and got a little bit of luck
00:31:43with Tommy Lyons coming in as a manager as well.
00:31:45He wanted to go for a youthful team.
00:31:47He put a load of young lads in it, which I was one.
00:31:50And it started well for me from there.
00:31:51But I suppose, were we always going to play?
00:31:54It was always, yeah, look, it was always at home and the house.
00:31:57We always loved playing football.
00:31:59And I don't know if it was written in the stars or not.
00:32:01Like Alan's talking there, you know, about him managing the soccer team.
00:32:04Whenever he was, you know, standing along the sidelines for an under-12 game,
00:32:08you know, people would assume that having this man in your corner was enough.
00:32:11But actually, your mother would have been more formidable along the sidelines, Bernard.
00:32:16Yeah, she was well known across all sidelines.
00:32:18And she actually was very nervous at times in games and aggressive at times.
00:32:22But in Crowe Park, she used to walk to the back of it.
00:32:23She couldn't watch us play.
00:32:24She used to walk to the back of the stadium.
00:32:25She got to know all the stewards.
00:32:27But a story down in a local rival game where I was getting a few clips off a lad.
00:32:32She'd come on the pitch one day with an umbrella, trying to clip him.
00:32:35And I was trying to hold her back.
00:32:36She would have probably got a dig off the fella that was clipping me.
00:32:39So, yeah, she was, they were both on their sidelines as kids.
00:32:42And that was a big part of us.
00:32:44It wasn't pressure, but there was an environment there to get out there and enjoy ourselves.
00:32:47And my dad actually had 10-year tickets in the Canal End when we were playing.
00:32:52And my mum used to watch the first five, ten minutes of a match.
00:32:55And then she'd be gone.
00:32:56So she got no use out of the 10-year tickets.
00:32:58She'd been better off at home watching it on the TV, but I suppose it was nervous times.
00:33:02And in those days, we were losing probably more of the big matches than we were winning, unfortunately.
00:33:06Yeah, I played from 2002 to 2011 and didn't play in our own final.
00:33:10Nine years.
00:33:11Even though we all think now today that Dublin are dominant.
00:33:14But at that time, nine years without getting to a final.
00:33:16Yeah.
00:33:17It was a long time coming whenever the drought finally broke.
00:33:21Paul, you were 16 before you even really took a notion that you wanted to play Gaelic.
00:33:27Why was that?
00:33:29Well, I was abruptly told.
00:33:34I saw you a couple of times that there was an article, I won't tell what paper it was,
00:33:37but an article about, and I was discussing my dad's career and how the goal and how exceptional he is.
00:33:41And then Alan was already well-established at that kind of stage and how well he's doing.
00:33:45And Bruno was starting to come along, you know, and really starting to look like he's going to be the next thing.
00:33:49And then he goes, then Paul plays golf.
00:33:50So that was it.
00:33:52He was a good golfer.
00:33:53Yeah, he was a very good golfer, but that was the end of my golfing career.
00:33:55But since then, now all I seem to be reckoned as far as to be dancing now, since then.
00:34:00And I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, because I'm a terrible dancer.
00:34:02So I don't know if that's translating either way.
00:34:05Well, look, I mean, you know, a brilliant footballer, we actually, you know,
00:34:07we have a picture of you here in the famous Dublin strip.
00:34:13Is that the away strip of the trailer strip?
00:34:15So I've got to wear that to know you, so it'd be my wouldn't let me.
00:34:17You spoke about, you know, 2011 there, Bernard, you know, and how long the wait was, you know,
00:34:25and you guys were there.
00:34:26The emotion that day, Alan, talk us through the emotion and what it meant.
00:34:30Well, what it meant to the whole of Dublin, you know, let alone your family.
00:34:33Yeah, well, I think that said, like, I'd been on the road nine or ten years at that stage.
00:34:36I'd lost four, four All-Ireland semi-finals until we managed to win one in 2011.
00:34:41And I think kind of winning that match, and we all remember, it was obviously a special moment.
00:34:45I think that the outpouring of emotion, not just with the team, right across the whole of Dublin,
00:34:51was amazing for the three or four months after.
00:34:53And, like, it was amazing to see how much it meant to there.
00:34:55There's my little lad, Jamie, there on the TV.
00:34:57He's not so little anymore.
00:34:58I'll be happy with that.
00:35:00But it was a huge, it was so big in the city at the time.
00:35:03And I was, that's, we went on to win, like, a few All-Irelands after that.
00:35:06The other five in a row after that.
00:35:07But I think that year will, it'll never be, it'll never be repeated, I don't think,
00:35:11in our lifetime, what Dubs experience, what the team, the Dubs experience.
00:35:15What I love is you telling that story and just the smile on your face.
00:35:20What was it like to have those boys out there?
00:35:22You asked some of the other guys about the best moment in Gaelic football.
00:35:26Bernard got the ball, he put it on the ground, and he called Stephen Cluckson up.
00:35:31And Stephen Cluckson came up and pulled it over the bar.
00:35:33It was just, it was a little out of Bernard's ranch.
00:35:36That was your happiest moment, me passing the ball over.
00:35:45I thought it was good, I thought it was a wee bit of time wasting there just to get the clock down, you know.
00:35:49And then there was another thing you did, didn't you?
00:35:50You were doing a bit of that.
00:35:52Testing the wind.
00:35:52You were testing the wind as well.
00:35:53There was as much time as we could.
00:35:54Legendary stuff.
00:35:55There was a bit of a sibling connection between you guys, wasn't there?
00:35:59A bit of a psychic connection on the pitch between yourself and Alan.
00:36:02When Alan retired, I started to get less balls kicked into me.
00:36:06In fairness, Alan was a corner forward.
00:36:07When I came in, I went inside, he was more of an engine, he was a worker.
00:36:11But he used to look for me inside all the time.
00:36:12And Paul Flynn and Dermot Connolly would be a great connection.
00:36:15When Alan went away and finished up and retired, the ball started to come in fewer and far between.
00:36:20And then the game got more condensed.
00:36:22But I'd love to play the game it is now, with the way it's opened up a bit now.
00:36:25And there's a chance to get a ball one-on-one again.
00:36:27So it's great to see the game back.
00:36:29Is this your way of saying you're available for this season first?
00:36:32Well, we're just trying to get Alan back.
00:36:34He said he had a hamstring injury, but we're trying to get him back for the over-40s now.
00:36:38Any chance?
00:36:39We're accruing for the over-40s.
00:36:40We're accruing for the over-40s if you get one more All-Ireland.
00:36:42So, look, let's talk about the next generation.
00:36:47Because, obviously, 2011, that started a run of, you know, seven All-Irelands.
00:36:51There was a Brogan on every team.
00:36:54You've got the kids now, I'm assuming, there.
00:36:57Are they steeped in it?
00:36:58They are playing, yeah.
00:36:59We have five boys between us and a little girl, Africa.
00:37:02Brennan's a little girl, Africa.
00:37:03So, look, they're all playing.
00:37:05They're all playing lots of sports.
00:37:06And I suppose we've taken a little bit, like, my old mum and dad.
00:37:09There's not too much pressure on them to play.
00:37:11They're all playing soccer.
00:37:12They're playing Gaelic.
00:37:13They're doing athletics and so on.
00:37:14So, I think that's the best way for any kid to be.
00:37:17Look, you don't want to put pressure on any kid.
00:37:18But it would be great if we saw one of them up there in a blue jersey one day.
00:37:22But what will be, will be.
00:37:23What would that mean to you, Bernard, if you saw us?
00:37:25Oh, look, it's special.
00:37:26I go out every week with the kids.
00:37:29And we had the most amazing time when the lads were growing up.
00:37:32And I'm looking forward to having to...
00:37:34I hope I'll last long enough to see them playing, you know.
00:37:36So, by the time the kids grow up, I mean, I'd be an old man.
00:37:40I've been older than I am today.
00:37:42Well, look, by the looks of the handshake that you gave me there
00:37:45whenever you come out, I reckon you can still do a job at full forward.
00:37:49Now, stay on with us.
00:37:51We'll have one more time for the Brogans.
00:37:52And there's a good chance of a schmazzle in the parallelogram
00:38:02as we bring on some players who haven't made training all season
00:38:06but who still think they can come in in the final and do a job for us.
00:38:09Would you please welcome the all-star full forward line
00:38:12of Gerlach Nain, Joe Brawley, Tommy Tiernan and more,
00:38:16a.k.a. Mr Conor Moore!
00:38:31Welcome to the show, fella. How are you getting on?
00:38:38I'm doing well. How are you?
00:38:39Yeah, great. Thanks for having me.
00:38:41Look, we know you're doing golf, you do F1, you do all types of sport
00:38:45but in the heart, it's GAA.
00:38:48I know, yeah, I love the GAA, I have to say.
00:38:50My career started in a dressing room in Mullingara-Shamrox,
00:38:53taking the Mick out of people.
00:38:54So, that's pretty much that's exactly where I started.
00:38:57And the GAA for me has two things that I need.
00:39:00It has great characters and great storylines.
00:39:01Even this year with the new rules and everything,
00:39:03it's just, it's never-ending, you know.
00:39:05I love it.
00:39:05I mean, the new rules, you know, a lot of people,
00:39:07whenever they were, you know, the new rules were coming in
00:39:09and people were doubting how that was going to go
00:39:11and everybody now seems to be a convert to the new rules.
00:39:15I mean, even the Hurland people themselves,
00:39:17like, I mean, Gerlach Nain, I mean, he's, he's,
00:39:19is he a fan?
00:39:21Oh, absolutely.
00:39:22What's that going on with you, eh?
00:39:28Now, is it a better game, football?
00:39:31Yes, but I have a few wishes with it, Pat, right?
00:39:33Absolutely.
00:39:34There's some of the rules I can't get my head around, eh?
00:39:35This whole thing of giving the ball back to a fella
00:39:38after you foul him, eh?
00:39:39What sort of walk, walk is that?
00:39:41Eh?
00:39:41Oh, here, have the ball back.
00:39:42Let's be friends, eh?
00:39:44Oh, sure, I'll kick the three for you, eh?
00:39:47If a fella ever asked me for the ball back,
00:39:49I'd lay him out like a yoga mat.
00:39:51And so, look, and it, and it's very, very confusing as well.
00:39:53I mean, you've now one-pinters, and you've two-pinters,
00:39:56and you've three-pinters, you've green flags,
00:39:57and orange flags, and the whole lot.
00:39:58I mean, we had a football match down in Clare last week,
00:40:00and we still don't have the result.
00:40:03I know we don't have the result, right?
00:40:05Now, listen, is it a better game?
00:40:06Yes, right?
00:40:07It has improved, right?
00:40:08And I'd be thinking, how can we improve hollering, right?
00:40:11Or at least make it a little bit more violent, right?
00:40:14Now, and I think, I'm going to Congress next month
00:40:16with a rule change, I want to get rid of the black hair,
00:40:19we do not need a black hair in hollering, right?
00:40:21We don't need a yellow card, and we don't need a red card.
00:40:24The only cards we need in hollering are medical cards,
00:40:26dental cards, and sometimes you might need a mask card.
00:40:29Absolutely.
00:40:35I mean, so these new rules, they're good for players,
00:40:37they're good for managers, I mean,
00:40:39do you reckon they're good for, are they good for pundits?
00:40:41Yeah, I think Joe Broly's a big fan of the money.
00:40:44Let's put a big smile on Joe's face.
00:40:45A second.
00:40:49No, hold on a second now.
00:41:00Well, I think the new rules are absolutely wonderful,
00:41:03so they are.
00:41:04You know, genuinely, you know,
00:41:05it's a forwards game again, isn't it, Al?
00:41:07You know, it genuinely is, you know,
00:41:08you see Michael Murphy's back playing, you know,
00:41:10you know, Bernard's back playing junior, he is, you know.
00:41:13I'm back playing junior B, I am,
00:41:15with my new club, Knockmore, you know,
00:41:18in my adopted county, Mayo, I'm living in Mayona, you know.
00:41:20I know you are, yeah.
00:41:21And, you know, they thought they were cursed before.
00:41:23Genuinely.
00:41:24But, genuinely.
00:41:27No, it happened, you know, I'm playing junior B,
00:41:29you know, it happened by accident, you know.
00:41:30I went down to watch, I didn't intend on playing, you know.
00:41:32But the manager says, he says,
00:41:34Joe, we need you to play, we're in big trouble.
00:41:35He says, we're low on numbers, you know.
00:41:37And I says, you know,
00:41:38Tony, I'm 56, you know, I'm too old.
00:41:40He says, Joe, it's junior B.
00:41:43You're the youngest guy we've got.
00:41:44So, I went out, and I played,
00:41:47and it was absolutely wonderful, you know.
00:41:49And we were underdogs, you know,
00:41:50with a lot of injuries and stuff.
00:41:51The corner forward pulled his hamstring, you know.
00:41:53Picking up his grandson.
00:41:55You know, the goalkeeper sprang his wrist playing bingo.
00:41:59But I got mad at the match I did, you know.
00:42:01I was brilliant, so I was.
00:42:02I scored 52 goals and 27 points, so I did Burnley.
00:42:05That's a true story, I wouldn't exaggerate.
00:42:09Anyway, people will be asking me,
00:42:10what's it like living in Mayo?
00:42:12You know, they're always saying, you know,
00:42:13when I see it, it reminds me of, you know,
00:42:15working at RTE, you know.
00:42:17I'm fairly sure they don't want me there.
00:42:26I mean, you do the pundits, you do the managers.
00:42:31You ever tempted to do the players?
00:42:34Would you believe?
00:42:35I've not really done any players, G8 players.
00:42:37A lot of media bands don't really speak.
00:42:39The only player I have done, actually,
00:42:40is Bernard Brogan.
00:42:41All right.
00:42:43The only player I ever did was Bernard Brogan.
00:42:45Okay, so.
00:42:45It's been a few years.
00:42:47Go on, ask me questions.
00:42:48Yeah, ask me questions.
00:42:48Blum.
00:42:48You know, look, I mean, Dublin, of course,
00:42:50you know, famously lost their Leinster title last year.
00:42:53Against me, then...
00:42:54LAUGHTER
00:42:55Against me, then...
00:42:58LAUGHTER
00:42:59Port Leish, do you reckon the Dubs this year
00:43:03might be able to turn it around, Bernard?
00:43:04Yeah, look, it was a really difficult year for the Dubs,
00:43:07you know.
00:43:09You know what?
00:43:10I thought, you know, disappointed to lose to Mead.
00:43:12I thought it was very unfair taking us out of Crowe Park.
00:43:15You know, it really unsettled a lot of the Dublin players,
00:43:17you know, especially those who'd never left the county before.
00:43:19LAUGHTER
00:43:20Desi was getting an awful lot of questions
00:43:22in the lead-up to the game from players,
00:43:24you know, things like, where's Leish?
00:43:25LAUGHTER
00:43:26You know, do we need a passport?
00:43:29Do we need a visa?
00:43:31Do we have to get vaccinated?
00:43:34But, yeah, it was great.
00:43:35And, you know, obviously, it was a dream of mine
00:43:37to play for the Dubs, you know,
00:43:38and it was great to play with my two brothers and all as well,
00:43:40you know, it was great crack, you know,
00:43:41and I remember we always wanted to emulate Die, you know,
00:43:44and put on the Dublin jersey, you know.
00:43:46I remember all the days the two boys would sneak into me room
00:43:49late at night, you know,
00:43:50and we'd be playing football with the Teddy Rooks bin and all,
00:43:52and we'd be kicking it to each other, you know,
00:43:53and then we'd do the post-match interviews
00:43:55with the hairbrush and all,
00:43:56and then we'd jump onto the bed
00:43:58and we'd be all wrestling on the bed
00:43:59in little trouble in underpants and all that, you know.
00:44:01And then, of course, you'd get that knock on the door.
00:44:04Bernard, are you going to bed?
00:44:06Me wife would be going mad, so she would.
00:44:07LAUGHTER
00:44:08APPLAUSE
00:44:10LAUGHTER
00:44:11APPLAUSE
00:44:13APPLAUSE
00:44:15LAUGHTER
00:44:16APPLAUSE
00:44:17I mean, is it easy to do an impression of somebody
00:44:22when they're just sitting beside you?
00:44:24Well, I've done Rui on Rui, I've done now Bernou on Bernou.
00:44:28Patrick on Patrick, maybe.
00:44:30Well, good evening, folks.

00:44:46LAUGHTER
00:44:47LAUGHTER
00:44:48APPLAUSE
00:44:49Please welcome my next guest,
00:44:53ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Tommy Tiernan!
00:44:55LAUGHTER
00:44:56APPLAUSE
00:44:57Yeah, so, tell me a bit about yourself.
00:45:15Oh, no, wait a minute, this is your show.
00:45:16Oh, yeah, yeah.
00:45:17Sorry.
00:45:17Have you any...
00:45:18You ask me the questions.
00:45:21Any special memories of the G.A. yourself?
00:45:23Well, now, genuinely, now, I love the G.A.
00:45:27Big fan, you know, as a child, growing up, you know, a lot.
00:45:30I was a big fan of the Dubs, actually, you know.
00:45:33So, I've seen them all, you know.
00:45:34I'm a big fan of the Brogans.
00:45:37Really am.
00:45:38You know, I have to say, three lads are great footballers,
00:45:40but for me now, the father was the best of them.
00:45:42LAUGHTER
00:45:43Bernard Senior, this fella here,
00:45:45you were absolutely fantastic, I have to say.
00:45:47You were absolutely fantastic, eh?
00:45:50You must be very proud of the three lads.
00:45:52Especially Ireland down there at the end, eh?
00:45:54And you're looking well as well.
00:45:56It's awful fucking joke.
00:45:58LAUGHTER
00:46:00So, look, you're on the road,
00:46:01you're going to be heading around Ireland.
00:46:03Is there a favourite accent when you're on the road?
00:46:05Eh, I know, I, eh, I, like...
00:46:09The West of Ireland, I always...
00:46:11No feds, lads.
00:46:11I love the old West of Ireland accents.
00:46:13I'm a big fan of the Donegal accent, actually.
00:46:15They're always here somewhere.
00:46:16Yeah, they're in.
00:46:17My wife is from Donegal, actually, so I find it very attractive.
00:46:19Erm...
00:46:20I always...
00:46:21I used to always say...
00:46:22When we moved in together, when we started dating,
00:46:23I used to say...
00:46:24It was like living with, eh...
00:46:26Donegal's Daniel O'Donnell.
00:46:27I used to come home and be like...
00:46:29How are you, love?
00:46:30How are you doing?
00:46:31Ah, sit down.
00:46:32What would you like for your dinner, love?
00:46:33Ah, Jesus, and ah, put your feet up.
00:46:35Now you're working so hard at those wee impressions.
00:46:37You're so funny, so you are.
00:46:39You know, and I love you so do.
00:46:41You're a great wee manny, so you are.
00:46:44We're five years married now.
00:46:46Now it's like living with Donegal's Pierce Doherty.
00:46:49Time and time again, broken promises after broken promises.
00:46:59Can I stay in your house tonight?
00:47:01Er, Connor is on tour around Ireland in February,
00:47:05including dates at the Olympia, the National Opera House in Wexford,
00:47:08the TLT in Drogheda and the Ulster Hall up in Belfast for tickets.
00:47:12See ConorSketches.com.
00:47:15Er, still to come, Connor is going to be staying with us.
00:47:17Our All-Ireland Club champions will be here
00:47:19and Mayo superfan Loretta Blewett will be trying to break the Mayo curse.
00:47:23Don't go away.
00:47:24Back after these.
00:47:25Back after these.
00:47:26.
00:47:40.
00:47:45.
00:47:49.
00:47:50The mighty Conor Moore is still with us
00:48:04At Croke Park they're primed and ready to go Lee and Antoinette are there
00:48:10Give us a wave guys there. They are the rain has stopped. They're ready to kick it for a ticket
00:48:14He's getting a few presents in as you can see it's gonna take a mighty kick to get the job done from where they're standing
00:48:21So to enlist some help to try to get them a wee bit closer to the goals
00:48:25Conor has kindly agreed to help Antoinette and here to help Lee as a Mayo fan
00:48:30Who knows only too well the pain that Croke Park can cause but as someone who has shared a henhouse with Tommy and Hector
00:48:36And a home with Joe Brawley. She also knows how to live with pain. Would you please welcome Loretta Bluett
00:48:44Oh
00:49:03Mayo fans are all up in there. I heard that yeah heard that not more up not more up not more no one from not more here
00:49:09They only let one of us out at a time
00:49:12Look you have by the way those glasses need upgrading their bods. They're women's glasses. You're using Joe's got new glasses. Joe gave me those glasses
00:49:20Well, I'm doing a new pair. Joe actually sent me a text before it come on air
00:49:24This we said please humiliate me tonight
00:49:28Good job. Oh, well, he knows that. Yeah, that's what the glasses did the job. It is. Yeah, no, you are steeped in GA heritage
00:49:34From from an early age. Tell us the history of the GA. Yeah, well, I only grew up obviously in not more good old
00:49:43North Mayo parish a nice rural place
00:49:46Hear what Marty's talking about numbers and rural me rural Ireland and I had to play with the boys like
00:49:52Cora did for a long time I
00:49:55Plague the under eights manager to let me come and play when I was about six and I think when we got to under tens a few more girls started to join so I
00:50:02Yeah, we started our own team and then Cora broke my heart for the entire my entire career because she played for Carna Cun
00:50:09I'm not more and they absolutely hammered us every time we play them in championships
00:50:14So so so you played a bit there was blood sweat and tears
00:50:17You're also in in the back room for a little while you were managing for a bit
00:50:21I was involved with Mayo seniors as logistics officer in
00:50:262015 and I think that might be why the Mayo management got sacked that year
00:50:30Apparently I let mask on a bit longer than I should have and I think the way the game turned out mass should have been a bit longer
00:50:36Yeah, well look
00:50:38Palm Sunday is a long now one and
00:50:40Then I was involved this year or just gone with there our senior ladies just involved in the backroom team
00:50:46So that was great. We got to a county final and we lost story of our lives
00:50:52and I know
00:50:54You know your dad was also a great GA man
00:50:58He died in in December. Yeah
00:51:01Brendan you tell us a bit about Brendan he was a Joe was text me and fill me in on him
00:51:05He sounds like a legendary man
00:51:07Dad was good fun and I told a lot of stories about him on the podcast and
00:51:11He got to a great age 90 years of age and he passed away the old brandy and the the whiskey and the coffees in the morning
00:51:18Certainly did him no harm for a long time and I suppose as most people growing up in the 80s 90s
00:51:24your father didn't take much to do with your upbringing and other than and
00:51:27Rearing you in terms of bringing in money to the house
00:51:30but also my bond with my dad was going to football so he was involved in
00:51:34Coaching in knock more for years and I used to head over to training with him all the time and then obviously
00:51:40He used to come to my matches my mother only came to one football match that I ever played in and I got my ribs broken and
00:51:47She never came again. So yeah, that was a very strong bond that I had with dad and obviously we miss him so much now
00:51:54And the two of them are gone. It's a different household
00:51:56But he was the president of a knock more GA and we laid him out and buried him in his president's jacket
00:52:03So it would have been a good honor to him. He was president in 2010 and he was just a tough man
00:52:08They were made of different stuff those boys when they got tonight as the doctor said in the hospital
00:52:13You don't get to 90 and not be made of tough stuff
00:52:15They had to put two drivers on him in the hospice to help him pass on he was that strong
00:52:20So he was the Chuck Norris of that situation
00:52:23But look, he's he was great man and great stories. You mentioned the hospice there
00:52:28You know, you do a lot of work with the hospice yourself and I know the new hospice is very dear to your heart
00:52:33Yeah, absolutely look at all. We were fortunate as a family after fundraising and been involved with the mayor's common hospice for so long
00:52:40To actually for my dad to spend the last week of his life in the hospice in Castlebar, which was just
00:52:46So special and I got to see the opposite side and the other side the human side of how good the hospice was and
00:52:53We're now undertaking our CEO Martina Jennings is a driving force and
00:52:57And we're now taking on the task of building the first ever children's hospice outside of Dublin and which is going to serve the western sea for seaboard
00:53:07So from Donegal down to Limerick and over to the Midlands and that is going to be called the Sunflower Children's Hospice
00:53:14And I know this man has made a few videos for me already and we look we've we raised we've 7 million already in the bank
00:53:21We've done the other two under budget and in time and
00:53:24We've got another 7 million to raise so if anyone has a spare million or two that they'd like to get rid of tonight
00:53:30You can give me a call after the show. I'd love to take a look
00:53:33You never know who's watching tonight, but I mean the work that you are doing
00:53:35I think it can speak for us all when we say thank you so so much
00:53:39You have agreed to play for Lee in Crow Park tonight
00:53:53I feel sorry for Lee by the way in that rain and those conditions when you rang me first
00:53:57I thought I was going to have to go and kick footballs over the oven
00:54:00Thankfully in these high heels I got to come in here
00:54:02Look I mean, you know it depend on the questions that you answer. This is how close is going to get to the goals
00:54:06You have to say you're going to be playing for Antoinette
00:54:08Perfect. Yeah, absolutely no pressure
00:54:11Jackie is standing by in Crow Park with the pair of them who have a chance to win all our final tickets
00:54:16All they have to do is kick it over the bar to win
00:54:19So here we go guys you're answering questions for Antoinette
00:54:23You're answering questions for Lee for every correct answer you get

01:02:40George Murphy and the Rising Suns are taking the show,
01:02:42the ultimate session on the road nationwide.
01:02:45This show is going to be performed in the round
01:02:47and it promises to be a very special evening.
01:02:49For further details, go to georgemurphymusic.com.
01:02:53OK, after the break, we'll be at the heart of what the G.A. is all about
01:02:57when we chat family pride with the club championship winners back after these.
01:03:23Welcome back to our G.A. special, where our studio audience are on their best behaviour.
01:03:33They haven't stuck a ball up their jersey once or swore at the ref this evening, which
01:03:41can mean only one thing. They're looking for something. And we might just get it now.
01:03:48Since Bridget's day is nearly upon us and into Kildare tourism, we want us all to discover
01:03:53Kildare's rich horse racing heritage, home to three renowned racecourses, Pontchastown,
01:03:58Naths and the Curragh. There's also the Irish National Stud. There's the Japanese Gardens,
01:04:05one of Ireland's most iconic visitor attractions is Taste of Kildare, the county's leading food
01:04:10festival and the newly opened Shackleton Experience in a Thigh. Check it all out on intokildare.ie
01:04:19and to mark all of that. They have given us two tickets for all of those events
01:04:25for everybody in the audience.
01:04:35Delighted with himself. Now, at the heart of the G.A. is the club and at the very heart
01:04:43of the club is family. So we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate the club championship
01:04:47winners than to invite all four of them here tonight with some of the families that helped
01:04:50make it, made it a big day for the parish. Would you please welcome ladies football champions
01:04:57from Kilcarran, Clonberne, Louise and Willie Ward, from Danginikush, men's football champions
01:05:04Paul, Mikey and Niall Daeney, our Camoogie champions from Athen Rye, Sabina, Alwyn and Joe Rabbit,
01:05:10and from Ballygunner, hurling winners Philip, Horik and Mikey Mahoney. Well done, everybody.
01:05:19Well done, everybody. Louise, we'll start with you. Five in a row for you guys in Kilcarran,
01:05:30Clonberne. I mean, does this get old or do you think this is going to go on forever?
01:05:35It's definitely not going to go on forever, but no, it's definitely not getting old. I think,
01:05:40you know, this is very special times for our club. We're a small rural club, you know, in the west of Galway
01:05:46and I suppose to be even competing on the national stage is something, you know,
01:05:50that we never thought we were ever going to be capable of and we've only 140 registered girls.
01:05:54So, you know, it's very special times. Obviously, Dad's our father, but there's a lot of other
01:05:58fathers involved in the management. Well, I was going to ask, I mean, you are, you are, you know,
01:06:03the manager of the team. You're also a dad. I mean, Willie, what is harder? Is it actually
01:06:07managing the team or managing the kids when they get home? Think carefully about this.
01:06:12Yeah, I think it's easier when they're out in the field because they can't answer you back.
01:06:18But really, when they get home then, if I don't do as well as they expect, it's me that gets criticised,
01:06:26not them. You know, they go out and play and then when I get home, especially from training,
01:06:32if things aren't right, I'll know about it. You won't hear it at training,
01:06:36but you will hear about it at home. Yeah, I'll hear about it at home, yeah.
01:06:38But they just want the highest standards possible. So I suppose you can understand that, you know.
01:06:43Well, look, sitting beside you there, we've got Paul Gainey. This was your club,
01:06:47Daingga Ni Coos, first ever All-Ireland and a massive, massive family affair.
01:06:52Huge, yeah. Paddy, I suppose the two lads beside me there, Mikey, first cousin, Niall's
01:07:00first cousin and Niall's two brothers as well, Connor and Dylan on the team.
01:07:04And then they had three other cousins as well, the O'Connors. So I suppose they had two brothers
01:07:10and whatever, five cousins involved each. So that was crazy. But that's what club is.
01:07:15It's about family and community and, you know, it makes us more special than when you win.
01:07:20So it's huge, yeah. I mean, speaking of family there, Mikey is beside you.
01:07:23Congratulations, Mikey. You've got some good news this week.
01:07:26Yeah, my wife, Nicole, had a baby girl yesterday morning for a squad.
01:07:34Mum and baby are doing well. Yeah, they're over in the rotunda being well taken care of.
01:07:38And is the baby in the squad yet? No, no, no. No, no, she'll be wild before that.
01:07:44So look, your goalie, Gavin Curran, tell us what he did over and above for the final.
01:07:53Indeed, yeah. So Gavin and Clare, his partner, are based in Australia
01:07:57and they were due a baby in January. So Gavin was commuting over and back
01:08:03between Australia, between the games, playing the game and then hitting the flight
01:08:10the next morning at six o'clock back over to Australia.
01:08:12And he missed something in Australia to play in the final.
01:08:16Yeah, so baby Ogie was born in the morning of the final.
01:08:19And then he rushed back over six o'clock Monday morning, reunited with the family.
01:08:23So look, this is a, how good is this? We've got a little pic of this.
01:08:26There he is. That's what it's about.
01:08:29Now just, you know, you've got to tell me, Mikey, before we move on, I mean, if it was a choice between, you know, the birth or playing in the final yourself, what would you?
01:08:38Dangerous decision. No, like sport is magic and stuff, but like nothing compares.
01:08:44Correct answer. Correct answer.
01:08:51Niall, the community came out and forced to celebrate. I mean, these were, you know, the celebrations caught the imagination of every guy, person in the whole of the country.
01:08:59We've got a little clip here of you guys coming home. Just amazing scenes.
01:09:04Yeah, it was unbelievable, really. You can just see there all the scenes, especially on Blennaville Bridge.
01:09:10And even the morning of the game, all the Dingle crowd went to the Hogan stand pub there to kind of see us into Crowe Park and looking out and seeing a sea of red and white and flares and signs of we never died of winter yet and things like that.
01:09:25So it really means a lot to us and we'd be nowhere without them, really.
01:09:29Sabine and Alwyn, Camogie champions. Congratulations, Parish.
01:09:34Parish and, you know, teams are all about sticking together through the highs and the lows.
01:09:38I know that this was a very, very special moment for you guys after what the team had been through.
01:09:44Yeah. So I suppose it was one of the most emotional final whistles that we've played for.
01:09:49And I suppose that's speaking on behalf of all the girls on the team.
01:09:53We've taken a journey over the last four years and yeah, it's been very difficult.
01:09:56And I suppose honouring Kate Moran and her character and personality and everything we can do to bring that with us, I suppose, to effectively got us over the line on the day and great to see the community.
01:10:08Yeah, to see all the support in Fairless was amazing.
01:10:11To see all the people coming out on the pitch afterwards and going to the primary schools as well, visiting just with the cup.
01:10:17It's really nice to see the next generation and to inspire them.
01:10:20Joe, you're smiling there beside the girls, Joe Rabbit. I mean, you're the dad, you're the manager, a big recognisable name in Athenry.
01:10:29I mean, what's so special about this group of girls for you?
01:10:32I suppose, look, I'm here tonight with my two daughters and so proud I am.
01:10:35But I can say that I suppose I feel like a father to 30 of them because, you know, our panel is very much like a panel of sisters.
01:10:44And I'm so proud of being managing such a bunch of girls, you know, that went through such hard times and came out the end.
01:10:52And, you know, to be All-Illand Champions is a fantastic feeling and, you know, for me and for all the people in the parish, you know.
01:11:00And it's all about a community effort. And I'm so delighted to be a part of that.
01:11:04Philip Mahoney, you are sitting beside Joe, their second title for Bally Gunner. What does this mean? Sweeter than the first?
01:11:12Yeah, it's pretty hard to compare the two and equally as good. But look, we're so happy.
01:11:16It was days you'll never forget. I don't think anyone on the bus, all the lads like, will ever forget the black and white jerseys on the way into Crowe Park.
01:11:24And to see all the faces after and what it meant to them and to go back home and to be walking down the hill by the church and seeing all the young faces and old faces that means so much of us.
01:11:32And we're so proud to represent our people. And we're very lucky to have these times.
01:11:37Porig, of course, we have to give a shout out to the Mammies. There's a big Mammie Club supporting you too.
01:11:43Yeah, obviously, in our house, obviously, my mother has to worry about four of us, never mind one, so I don't know how she does it.
01:11:48But we have a ladies committee in Bally Gunner who cook the dinners for us after every train.
01:11:52And, you know, it's made up of all the Mammies on the team.
01:11:55And I think the standard of food this year went through the roof, so maybe they knew there was something good on the cards.
01:12:00But we're so grateful for, you know, mothers, obviously, and everyone involved with the, you know, the families and friends who have contributed to this.
01:12:08It's just special, special times.
01:12:10I mean, one of the things which I love is that you just didn't celebrate in Bally Gunner.
01:12:13You took the party on the road. Tell us where you ended up.
01:12:16It was a great club, a man of ours now in Moorish Field, loaded up 30 of us on a bus down to Dingle last week.
01:12:22So we were, it was very lucky. I was very special. There were six clubs who won the All-Ireland down there.
01:12:28And we probably had a lot of people thinking on the same wavelength and feeding off each other's energy and excitement.
01:12:34And look, the Dingle has put on a great spread for us and everything like that. So a special few days.
01:12:42So do you think this is going to be, you know, a regular thing then that the club champions all have to get together and party and celebrate?
01:12:48What do you reckon, Paul?
01:12:50It might be. I don't know how I organise again.
01:12:54It was great. It was a great weekend. It was a great crack. And, you know, the main thing was that we went off without any glitches and everybody went home happy and healthy afterwards as well.
01:13:02Well, not healthy maybe, but happy anyway.
01:13:06Well, look, it's what it's all about. I mean, you know, there's so many GEA people, you know, there's a quote this week and, you know, it's the county lads will come to your wedding and it's the club guys that end up carrying your coffin.
01:13:18And, you know, coming from a small club myself to see you guys, I know what it means to you.
01:13:24I know what it means to all of us to see you guys here tonight. And huge, huge congratulations.
01:13:30Thank you so much.
01:13:35OK, thank you so much to all our club championship winners.
01:13:39That is it for us from tonight.
01:13:44Let's see who's won tonight's competition.
01:13:47The fives, five nights stay in the Killarney Park Hotel with five grand.
01:13:53Joe Bracken from County Offaly. Congratulations to you.
01:13:57There he is. Clearly.
01:14:01Clearly a lot of Joe's family in.
01:14:03A lot of Joe's family in there.
01:14:05Till next week. This has been The Late Late Show.
01:14:07We'll be back to do it all again then.
01:14:09I'm Patrick Keelty.
01:14:11Go to Mila Margit. Good night.
01:14:13CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:14:15It's started on The Late Late Show.
01:14:19Great show.
