00:00As today, Peru is electing the president, 130 deputies, 60 senators and 5 Andean parliamentaries.
00:06It was the first general elections since the ousting of President Pedro Castillo
00:10in order to establish a de facto government under Dina Boluarte.
00:20The electoral timeline is taking place amid a political crisis marked by the succession
00:26of four presidents within a single presidential term and eight presidents in government
00:31due to a constitutional clause that grants Congress the power to remove the head of state
00:38without proving a specific crime.
00:42For this election, the National Office of Electoral Processes registered an unprecedented number
00:49of 35 presidential candidates, as well as 130 deputies and 60 senators
00:56who will make up the Congress of the Republic for the next legislative term.
01:03More than 33 million Peruvians will go to the polls in a first round,
01:08and the candidate who obtains 50% plus one of the votes will be elected president.
01:15If this requirement is not met, a second round will be held, scheduled for June 7, 2026.
01:24There are thousands of polling stations nationwide and 216 voting locations across 75 countries
01:33to guarantee the voting rights of all citizens.
01:36Voters will have, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time to go to their respective polling stations.
01:47These elections represent a new stage for Peruvians who are facing high levels of violence,
