00:00Caleb wins fire
00:08Making Sally the 21st person voted out of the game and the eighth member of our jury
00:14Welcome to The Jury's Out with Shani Botel and Nick Idanza
00:20Hey everyone
00:20Where we take you behind the snuffed torches of Tribal and hear about all the juicy goss
00:26It's been an epic season. We're here to talk to all the jury members
00:29One of the last jury members not the last but one of the last jury members that we are talking
00:34to today
00:35Is Sally. She had a pretty up and down journey across the season. She won a car
00:41Amazing it was sent to redemption
00:44Half an idol
00:46Fire and I feel like you know, she had such a special reason for wanting to be on this season
00:52Obviously her brother Jackson. Yeah, should we bring it out Sally to tell us all about her game the signs
00:58from the universe and everything in between
01:00Please welcome Sally
01:02Hello
01:04What happened?
01:06How are you feeling? Tell us everything
01:08Oh my gosh
01:10Um, I'm feeling so many mixed emotions. I mean going out at four
01:17Oh, and the way that I went out. I don't know. It's hard to process
01:21I want to say I went out in a blaze of glory, but was there glory and was there a
01:26blaze? No, so
01:29But there's still glory Sally. There's still glory
01:32You're right. There's still there's still glory. I had so much fun
01:35I didn't expect to be going out on fire clearly otherwise I would have practiced
01:41Fire during my time in survivor. I mean
01:45At this point if you can't make fire and survivor then
01:50There's something wrong there
01:52But the way that I look at it now i'm like you know what if I'd spent more time making
01:56fire
01:57Who's to say I would have spent less time making social connections and wouldn't have gone out earlier in the
02:02game
02:03That's that's what's making me feel okay right now is that is that thought what you were pitching at tribal
02:08council
02:09Made so much sense the whole fire thing just makes me nervous because then who is coming back into the
02:15game?
02:15And then they've got something on their resume rather than us actually voting someone out
02:20You were saying like let's not let this get to a fire challenge
02:25Let's not let someone have that on their resume
02:29Thank you guys
02:29That makes me feel a lot better because I don't know if I was even talking sense at that tribal
02:35I was so tired yeah, so fatigued every time dave asked me a question
02:39I was trying to articulate something, but it was just a word word vomit
02:43You know you guys know what it's like when maybe i'm fluent in word vomit because it to me it
02:47made sense
02:48It made sense. I was like she's right. She's got a point here
02:51Yeah
02:52I mean at that stage of the game everyone is talking about the moves that they can claim
02:56And who could claim fire and to be honest when I was saying those things
02:59I thought that jacko was going to be the one that was going to blindside me that night
03:04And he's the master of the big moves as he likes to say it
03:08So I was directing that at him not knowing
03:10That caleb was the one that was going to put me up for fire and ultimately take me out and
03:15In hindsight now, I think what caleb did was actually really really epic
03:21And if there's anyone I would have liked to have gone out with on on fire to it was definitely
03:27caleb what a menace
03:29Let's go back a little bit though. So before you came on the island, you're a big fan of this
03:34show
03:34Can you tell us about your history with survivor?
03:36Yeah, absolutely
03:37I mean, I'm such a big fan of the show right now that I can't even believe that I'm speaking
03:42to both of you
03:43Shawnee you're like my number one favorite player of all time and you just look so radiant right now
03:48I'm obsessed with you
03:50Aishonik, totally Aishonik
03:51I've been doing this non-stop
03:52In your honor
03:54Um
03:56I actually caught that you knew the snitches get stitches and end up in ditches reference
04:01I was like yes
04:02Yeah
04:02Go Sally
04:03Oh my gosh
04:04It was amazing and I'm so sad I never got to talk to Harry about all of that actually
04:09And Nick I listened to your deep dive before I went on the show and picked up so much useful
04:13information
04:13But survivor for me has been um
04:17You know
04:18A really emotional thing for me in my life
04:21Um, I used to watch it with my little brother and that's how it ended up being part of my
04:26redemption story
04:27Was that I used to watch it with my little brother Jacko
04:29We used to skip school and binge watch survivor
04:31And eat twisties and scream at the tv and just get really passionate about it
04:36And that's
04:37Yeah, I lost him five years ago to suicide unfortunately
04:41And
04:42Um
04:43Um, that's what led me to to applying to be able to play this game for him with everything that
04:49the grief and loss of losing
04:50Him has taught me along the way and given me such a fight
04:53And I came out here to not only redeem him um
04:57But my family name but it ended up being such a beautiful redemption story where by the end of it
05:02I'd learned so much that I realized like you know what Sal
05:06You've done it for Jacko
05:07You've done it for your mum and dad
05:08Now it's time to actually play this game for you
05:11And that's when I started really having fun
05:14And I've gone out at four obviously I would have loved the
05:17500,000 dog wickies didn't make it but I am
05:21Genuinely elated that I got to contribute to the survivor
05:24Franchise and the story and this season as a fan was
05:31epic epic like nothing I've ever seen and that's just from my perspective so I cannot wait to see
05:37I cannot wait to see how the story unfolds and and who's going to take the title
05:41I hope you feel like you did him proud because um how could he not be proud you made it
05:46so so far
05:47But you did seem that you thought you were going home in the first tribal council that you went to
05:52What was that like?
05:54Oh it was so hectic it was indescribable
05:57I heard that hearing your name for the first time is like you know it just your your stomach drops
06:03And it's a really visceral sensation
06:04Faith is putting your name on the table and she's going hard
06:08Okay
06:10But it was hectic like Caleb literally had to do a welfare check on me because he thought I was
06:15about to have a seizure
06:15Like I was walking around being like oh my god like what is happening
06:20It was awful and you don't know you have you know I hadn't even played a couple of days at
06:25that stage
06:25I had no idea what was going on and I freaked the hell out and
06:30Right as I'm sitting down for tribal council that night. I thought to myself like Sal
06:36You need to calm down sister like I really had to give myself a pep talk and go you do
06:41not know what's going to happen tonight
06:43You have no idea where the votes even sit right now
06:45Just calm down and see what happens
06:48The time has come where we have to see where where it's going to fall
06:53And if it wasn't for that first tribal who knows I might not have learnt the skill of actually
06:59Relaxing my nervous system and not trusting everything that I heard so whilst that day has definitely given me
07:07PTSD and I'll never get over it I think it helped me get to day 43 for sure
07:13So that's the difference between post merge Sally and pre merge Sally that calmness
07:18100% and tribe swap Sally like my name came out of the urn a couple of times at tribe
07:23swap
07:23And that was still when I was really finessing this new part of the game that I felt like I
07:28lost control at tribe swap
07:29And a lot of people do you lose you know
07:31There's not many things in survivor that are luck and tribe swap is one of those things
07:35And I had to forge new relationships at that time and fortunately by that stage
07:41I had really worked on my social connections to the point that
07:44My friend saved me even when I didn't know I was going home votes swung
07:49From a majority on me on to another name to send them home because my alliance wanted to save me
07:56And I feel like tribe swap can be like the stickiest situation because you're with this new bunch of people
08:02We're a new tribe now
08:03Yeah we are
08:04Oh we are
08:05So you're a bit like disheveled and thinking oh my goodness
08:09But you're also trying to put your best foot forward and be like hey guys I'm a really cool fun
08:14girl
08:14Like let's hang out and be friends and make an alliance together
08:18But then internally you're like oh my god
08:21I was like I'm not day one Sally like I'm cool tribe swap Sally now
08:24Like things are different like keep me around you know you've got to
08:27I actually I call it my um ass kissing phase
08:32Everyone needs one of those
08:33Everyone needs one of those
08:34You've got to be a good ass kisser if you're going to play survivor
08:37Honestly it's the number one tip
08:39So you spoke about tribe swap Sally what about redemption beach Sally?
08:43Oh my gosh
08:44Redemption beach was pivotal for me
08:48I was so heartbroken
08:50I thought to myself all the work that I've done is for nothing
08:53I'm now going to this hell hole redemption beach where most likely I won't come back
08:58You know I'm going with some people in my brain
09:00I thought maybe one of us will come back and I'm going with two people that voted me out there
09:05So the odds aren't looking good for Sal
09:07So I went out there completely devastated um that my game was over
09:12The first night at redemption beach was dark and miserable and heartbreaking and all of those things
09:18And then over the next two days I got to spend some quality time on my own
09:23I actually stargazed for hours each night by myself laying there amongst the crab holes
09:30And just looked at the stars and just thought okay Sal take your time now to just think
09:35You don't have to strategize with everyone right now
09:38You know you've only got Caleb and Kiehl's here
09:40They're off sleeping or sitting by the fire doing their own thing
09:44Make use of this quiet time and I was able to really critically think about things and
09:48Really reflect on the game that I play so far and without redemption beach who knows I probably would have
09:53Yeah, not been able to say that I could have pivoted in such a way post merge with my alliances
09:58and who I wanted to work with
09:59So I'm very grateful. I got to go out there
10:02So you spoke about the symbolism of that moment and the stargazing talking to the universe and getting signs from
10:07the universe seems to be like
10:08One of your your things. Can you tell us about the signs that you got out there?
10:12Because I think every survivor player has experienced that to some extent. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that
10:16It was absolutely crazy. So before I went out there I asked for signs
10:21I made some definite signs in my mind that if I saw them while I was playing the game
10:26I would know that it's like a sign from Jacko or the universe or whatever you want to bloody call
10:31it
10:31And one was the name Jackson
10:33Obviously and the other one was cactus because my partner and I have a cactus nursery and we love cactus
10:40That's a very symbolic thing for me and I think it was the first challenge
10:44We go out on the mat and I look next to me and I see this, you know
10:49Gorgeous model like figure next to me Ben with
10:53Cactus budgie smugglers like his ass cheeks just looking at me with cactus all over them
10:58And that was my sign and I'm going oh my god
11:02And not only was it cactus like it's packaged on a guy's bum
11:06Which I was like oh my god my brother would so do that for me
11:10And I meant to be focused on the challenge and he's like you wanted a sign here's a cactus on
11:16a booty
11:16Yeah
11:17Going into the challenge you know yeah cactus
11:19That's my sign
11:20Yeah that we're all meant to be friends
11:22Coming into this that a good thing is going to happen this cactus
11:27It's on your gonads
11:29Here's your sign Sal here it is so it was little things like that that like you know I was
11:35looking for those things
11:36Sally I can definitely relate or I think it was like in the first week of the first time I
11:41played
11:41It was what would have been my mum's 60th birthday and just like you and your brother
11:45I used to watch survivor with her
11:47I sat out of a challenge because I was feeling really well unwell really down
11:50I sat in the ground and found four pieces of coral next to each other that spelt out her name
11:55Oh my god
11:56And I've got them at home on my mantelpiece
11:59And I'll remind me I'll send you a photo of it once this is all over
12:02It was the most astounding moment and it just was like yep okay I can do this
12:07Yep
12:07Picked myself up and got voted out the next day
12:11But I was saved so maybe there was something in it
12:14Maybe there was something in it you know
12:15Totally and like I set an intention for coming out here it was like Sal just stay strong
12:21Find some time every day if you can to just go and have five minutes to yourself
12:25Look for signs connect deeply with people and think of the bigger picture at times too
12:32You know if there's a small chance that you're actually going to win
12:35You know you've got a one in 24 bloody chance that you're actually going to win survivor
12:38And my intention was if i'm not going to win the least I can do is get some growth out
12:45of this
12:46That's what helped me to tap into that deep inner reservoir of strength and spirituality and faith
12:51To trust that I was going to come out the other end of this even stronger even more sally
12:58And even more purposeful than before and yeah, I got to final four and I didn't you know
13:04I didn't take home the title, but man, I am a changed woman and I am so bloody proud of
13:12myself
13:12Honestly, I can't wait to tell my family and friends about how horrific it was
13:18So Sally, what was your plan for the end game?
13:21Say you didn't go home like who were the people that you wanted to target next and who did you
13:25want to sit next to at the very end?
13:26Oh, there was so much going through my mind at the end game
13:30I really was weighing up every single option for the three there and who I wanted to sit next to
13:38and who I wanted to send home
13:39I really felt like there that I didn't want to sit next to caleb
13:43That was the one thing that I was sure about so whilst I had like the best relationship with caleb
13:47He is crazy. He has a massive heart. He's played an incredible game
13:52I knew that our stories were super similar. We played together since day one
13:56We'd worked together since day one. We went to redemption beach
13:59I wanted him gone so that I could really tell my story without caleb being able to claim any of
14:05it to be honest
14:06So I wanted to get caleb out. I wanted me and jacko to vote at caleb
14:11And then I wanted to win the next endurance challenge and I wanted to make that final decision and I
14:16probably would have
14:18I mean the safe bet would have been to sit next to loz at the end I feel but
14:25the best performance would have been for me to sit next to jacko and have such contrasting pictures and different
14:32stories and different strategies
14:33which as a fan I bloody loved so
14:38I mean it absolutely did not work out for me
14:41I didn't think I would be going to fire if I did I would have made at least one fire
14:45that day and I will never
14:47Live it down. Oh my god
14:49All right, so sally one of the games that we have been playing with everyone is putting the jury through
14:55a little bit of an interrogate
14:58Sean's gonna ask you some spicy questions, but you may not want to answer all of them and that's where
15:04this little bad boy comes into it
15:06The immunity idol. It's not a half. And this isn't to trigger you because it's not a half. It's a
15:11full one, okay?
15:12It cannot be pulled in half, but beware every question after that you will have to answer
15:17So how brave are you feeling and how willing are you to throw your tribe mates under the bus?
15:22Are you ready to play interrogation?
15:24Yes, let's go. Who was the most annoying person to live with?
15:29Simon. Really? Why?
15:31He just gave too many bloody speeches all the time. Yeah, loves the sound of his own voice. Old Simon
15:36Who will be the most bitter juror? Blanche
15:40She's literally got every answer to that question. Who was the least strategic?
15:45Blanche. Who smelt the worst? Oh, who smelt the worst? Jacko.
15:50Who was the easiest to manipulate? You can go all the way back to the very beginning. Who was the
15:56easiest to manipulate?
15:58Um, Tez. Who would you hate to see win? Out of anyone or just who's left?
16:06Who's left? Idol. You gonna play the idol?
16:09Idol. Well, we'll play the idol.
16:11Well, you've used it just before we ask you the hardest question of all. Who do you like more? Me
16:17or Nick?
16:18I think we know the answer to this.
16:19Shonny. Yay!
16:20You didn't have to answer it so quickly, Sally, but I get the fun. It's a big ass game.
16:26No hesitation. And when they asked me at the start of this game, who's your favourite survivor player
16:32ever? I answered Shonny just as quickly as I did then.
16:35Aw, thank you. Just a recollect now.
16:37Well, thank you so much. You have survived the interrogation.
16:40We have loved talking to you. We've loved watching your game. You are a bright spark.
16:45I probably shouldn't have used the word spark. Oh my gosh.
16:50You are a sunbeam of joy. I'm gonna be the butt of every fire joke, aren't I,
16:55for the rest of my life. I'm never gonna live it down.
16:58But thank you so much, Sally, for coming to talk to us.
17:01We cannot wait to see you on the jury. The outfits can't wait. You've already got the hair accessories.
17:07So it is going to be amazing. Thanks so much.
17:10Thanks, Sally. Thanks so much, guys. This is so crazy that I'm here talking to you guys right now.
17:16Loved every second of it. Go, Caleb.
17:20Shon, we only have one more episode of Jury's Hour left. I cannot believe that we are racing
17:25towards the end of this season. I can't believe our promotion is coming to an end.
17:29Promotion. Promotion.
17:30Thank you very much, everybody. Bye.
