00:02I have a lot of things at home and I regularly donate.
00:06My key motivation is so that it doesn't go into landfill.
00:09I wouldn't want them to go into landfill so I guess that someone else gets to use them.
00:14Donating clothes to an op shop is largely seen as a way to support sustainability.
00:19But what many people don't realise is that most of these items don't end up on the store floor.
00:26That's landfill as well.
00:27In a bag we'd see about 20% is good ready for sale.
00:3180% would either have to rag or landfill.
00:35Australians donate 310,000 tonnes of clothing to op shops every year.
00:42About a third of that is repurposed into things like rags.
00:46Another third is sent for use overseas.
00:4914% ends up in landfill and the remaining 16% is sold in op shops.
00:55It always is concerning yes especially because we still do landfill.
01:00This precious material of course it's much better if it circles back into recycling and reuse.
01:07Op shops receive many donations that are in poor condition and can't be reused.
01:13But some can be fixed.
01:15Might just have a small button missing or just a small stain.
01:19A Hobart op shop is trying to save as many clothes as possible by washing and repairing.
01:25We did just mend a beautiful stall.
01:29To have something that valuable regardless of what you think about it, it just should not be in landfill.
01:34Stitching a solution to textile wastage.
01:37To have something that is not possible for us to remove waste after all that, it is a natural waste
01:38to move out of that.
01:38The focus is a tool to remove that.
01:38The focus is not as possible without making sure as we don't know what the money costs are back in
01:39the landfill.
