The Morning Shift spent time recapping the first round of The Masters with former PGA Tour caddie Mick Middlemo. The discussed Bryson DeChambeau blaming the sand in the bunker, and how quickly a round can spiral out of control at Augusta National.

Then they get into which golfer Mick thinks would break the internet if he found a way to win The Masters, if the PGA needs to address the issue about how far golfers are hitting golf balls, if Tiger Wood’s image is starting to become a problem for the PGA.

00:00let's call him our resident caddy mick middlemo uh he's going to come in and talk a little bit
00:05about the masters and mick look i got a bunch to get in you know i want to talk about
00:10rory i want
00:11to talk about bryson i want to talk about iron play and bunkers and everything else but you're
00:16across the pond man you're you're in australia i want you to tell people i am in australia
00:23it's actually hard to watch the masters in australia because i have to get up at 3 a.m to
00:26do it okay that's what that's what i wanted to know that's what i wanted to i want to know
00:29are you watching are you watching live how many people are watching with you what time is it when
00:34the masters are coming on uh i got up at 3 a.m this morning to have a little bit
00:39of a look at it and i
00:40thought i would stay awake for a couple hours but i pretty much watched the whole thing till the end
00:44so mick uh are you over there with uh with dundee in the northern territory where are you at in
00:50australia i'm in i'm actually i'm actually in melbourne at the moment actually i was just on
00:54hold and you know i was actually i was a little depressed earlier but then i wanted to cheer
00:58myself up so then i watched some of your golf swings that i videotaped of you at the uh brown
01:03grass classic and then i actually it's just to realize that how bad your golf swing was and and
01:09i'm actually starting to feel pretty good about my own golf game wow hey you know what hey i'm here
01:14for you uh you know mick i help people in a lot of ways and if i can help your
01:18you know your uh your
01:20your your mental capacity there i'm all for it um look let's talk about a guy who looked pretty bad
01:26yesterday as well in the bunkers in bryson dechambeau look he had won i think two straight live uh
01:32events comes in here with a lot of people a little bit of hype for him and then he got
01:38in that bunker
01:38and because of the way that green plays he couldn't get out of the bunker what was going on there
01:44how
01:44do you how do you handle that with a player and and just talk about what happened to him
01:49you know the most ridiculous thing about it was when i when i listened to his interview he said he
01:53blamed the sand because it was a little softer than he thought it was i'm like seriously like
01:59you've never been to augusta before you've never practiced out of a bunker before i'm like seriously
02:04it was like the worst excuse i mean bryson dechambeau who i who i do like he's a good guy
02:09but his
02:11interview today was pretty short sharp and uh pretty average actually he he blamed pretty much
02:16everything but himself but maybe he needs to i mean he's got his five iron that he i don't know
02:21he
02:21what what did he do with that five iron that he i guess it was he invented yeah he 3d
02:27printed a
02:28five iron well maybe he should have 3d printed a sandwich i don't know it's just not not not going
02:33for it but he's also got those clubs make that he that everything's got like the shaft of a seven
02:38uh a seven or whatever so because of the way the uh the angle is for him he's a he's
02:43an odd cat
02:45yeah he's an odd cat you know one of the first times i met him i was at colonial golf
02:49club and we
02:49were looking at his clubs every club is the same length every club is like 14 degrees upright it's
02:55just yeah he's a weird cat but yeah i mean hey you know don't blame the sand of the gust
02:58i mean it's
02:59there's you can blame a lot of things in life but not the sand of the gust because it's all
03:03pure
03:03well i am so he just he just had a bad day i'm curious about the course itself because you
03:09know
03:09so much about this we hear it's difficult but can you explain just how quickly a bad round can spiral
03:14at augusta compared to other majors oh it's just the course is so difficult it's if you start to make
03:21bad mistakes at that course it'll chew you up it'll eat you up it's like you've got to have a
03:26wonderful
03:26short game to play there because if you start missing greens it's just it's so difficult it's so hilly
03:32people don't realize if you unless you've never been there you don't realize how the undulations
03:36and and everything can really really hurt you with that golf course and if you start missing the
03:41you know in wrong places the course will chew you up in a heartbeat but let's not forget rory won
03:47the
03:47tournament last year and he had four double bogeys when he won the tournament last year which is unheard
03:51of hanging out with our resident caddy mick middlemo and he's answering some of our questions about
03:56the masters obviously headed into day two today mick i did anything surprise you anything
04:02jump off the leaderboard of of you know kind of a head turner when you saw a certain name and
04:07you
04:07just look up there and go huh i didn't expect to see him in the top uh top 10 top
04:1120 yeah rory
04:13mick or rory yeah it's just because i'm deadly i'm deadly i was kind of deadly serious about it
04:21because i honestly thought that you know with everything that he had got going on this week
04:25you know the masters dinner all the interviews everything had to do he hadn't played in a tournament
04:29for a couple weeks i thought he might get off to a like an even par one under start and
04:34just get
04:35into his round but he looks like he's just so free right now that he's won the masters last year
04:41that
04:41you know if you listen to um freddie couple's interview today freddie couple said that the
04:46way he plays he might never not win the masters again because he's just so free and he's playing so
04:53relax now because you know when you play golf it's like if you have a freedom in your mind
04:59it's just what a wonderful game it is but when you start like getting stressed and stressed and
05:03stressed but like he's free now he's you know he's won the grand slam of golf he's he's just playing
05:09golf like it's amazing and i i can't see him losing from here i really can't well what what had
05:15uh what
05:16was up with sam burns yesterday because i don't think a lot of people expected him to go out and
05:19shoot
05:20the same score as rory you know and a five under is is it just because his ball striking was
05:25so good
05:26yesterday because everybody can that's kind of the not or not the not but kind of the thing about
05:30augusta everybody talks about the pure ball strikers really tend to play well there
05:35sam burns is one of the best putters you'll ever see in your life and if you can putt at
05:40you know if
05:41you're one of the best putters ever i mean augusta is the place for you and he hasn't really had
05:45much
05:46success there but i mean he he struck his irons well yesterday middle of the greens like you said
05:50play middle of the greens and then just yeah he just he putted great but he he's a good guy
05:56he's
05:56you know one of scotty sheffler's best friends and you know they play a lot of practice rounds together
06:00so you know obviously he's learned a little bit from scotty and scotty scotty's not in you know
06:05scotty's in a good position too i mean two under um he's he's in a great spot but i like
06:10i said i
06:10really can't see anybody you know toppling rory at the moment i'd be really really surprised if
06:14anybody beat rory at the moment we are joined by former pga tour caddy and our good buddy mick
06:19middlemoe make the caddy on the morning shift i know you're saying rory's probably gonna win this
06:24but who would be your pick if they won it would break the internet this weekend oh justin rose
06:34and you know and i know justin rose really really well he's uh he's caddy's one of my best friends
06:39and
06:39you know and i would love rosie to win it because he deserves you know he's he's such a class
06:44act and you know he's been beaten in the playoff twice now with the masters once by sergio and
06:48obviously rory last year um i would love him to win it and you know i was loving watching his
06:55golf
06:56this morning until he you know until he bogeyed 17 18 but he's still in a great spot and if
07:01anybody
07:01could win it i would love it to be rosie more than um your rory for sure mick just a
07:06couple more
07:06things before i let you go i did want to get your thoughts um you know obviously with the ceremonial
07:10tee shots yesterday and jack nicholas and tom watts and gary player all those guys do a little
07:15bit of media session they were kind of asked about the the distance that the golf balls have been
07:19you know getting off the tee and they all kind of share the thought that this thing needs to be
07:24reined in a little bit the guys are hitting the ball too far i'm just curious where you stand on
07:28this issue and if you really think that it's something that pga needs to address moving forward
07:32well the pga are going to they have addressed it and obviously it's not going to happen overnight
07:38um it's going to happen within the next probably two or three years i think but they will but i
07:42think they will roll it back i mean these guys hit the ball so far now these guys hit at
07:46330 340
07:48um you know where bo hits at 140 150 i mean you know i think bo's going to be looking
07:53for a golf ball
07:54that goes a little bit further um so mick i need one that just goes straight can they invent one
08:03that
08:03goes straight no matter what yeah that'd be good uh if looking at your swing i don't think they i
08:09don't think there's one that goes that straight might like a polish it but um but no i i think
08:14they eventually will roll it back it's going to take a few years um and honestly my opinion is that
08:21you know the golf courses these days you know if you can make them harder you can you can bring
08:29the
08:29fairways in you can make the greens harder the golf ball i guess is i mean these guys hit it
08:34so far
08:34now these guys hit at 340 i mean you look at um cam young when he won the uh players
08:39championship he
08:40got 370 on 18 370 is a long way to hit it so i guess these guys i mean the
08:45pga tour is like
08:46concerned that the ball is going too far and i and i believe it is as well so they'll roll
08:51it back for
08:51sure uh mick real quick um you know tigers had his issues and another uh another moment a couple weeks
08:58ago and now he's getting some help is he if he continues on this path are we not gonna actually
09:05get to see him do that ceremonial first tee shot once it becomes his moment or you know because it
09:12his his image is really starting to kind of be a problem i think for the pga with all his
09:17issues
09:19um you may see him hit a better ceremonial t-shirt than jack did that's for sure uh jack's shot
09:25wasn't great he nearly killed someone in the crowd but um yeah no i think tiger i don't think
09:30you'll see tiger play golf again on the pga tour or the uh champions tour i think he's done um
09:35i think
09:36tiger needs to focus on better things in his life right now than you know he's got a lot of
09:41stuff
09:41going on obviously he's addicted to paying pills and he's got things going on and he needs to uh he
09:47needs to take a break from golf um i honestly don't believe you'll ever see tiger woods tee it up
09:52in
09:52another golf tournament again i really don't wow um that's crazy stuff man mick uh you you're
09:59drinking a beer right now man are you going to try to get to bed early so that the wake
10:02up time's good
10:02what are we dealing with tonight um there's a chance i'll have a beer with my dad my 88 year
10:07old
10:07father's sitting out on the couch right now he's got a beer in hand he's probably wanting for me to
10:11come back and have a beer with him but uh yeah i'll definitely do that you know it's funny as
10:14i asked
10:15mick to help me fix my swing and he said i'll just move to australia instead
10:20yeah there's this uh moving to australia was going to be a little bit easier
10:25and the good thing is roger goodell's over here at the moment too in the same place he's over here
10:30at melbourne right now getting ready for the uh promoting the nfl for coming over here and um so
10:34yeah i'm looking forward to that game as well yeah you can't escape us mick man hey uh tell your
10:38dad we said hello man enjoy that beer and uh we'll talk to you again soon yeah he well he's
10:43part of
