00:13Okay, it's rolling. Go ahead.
00:16Tolga and Christine had a lot of videos of us.
00:23Sam trusted them, but I was a little suspicious.
00:31One time, I actually told him, I was like,
00:35I think there's something going on.
00:39But he didn't believe me.
00:41I told him yesterday that I trust Tolga and Christine
00:44with her stuff more than myself.
00:46Or the new self.
00:47Wow.
00:48He blew me off and then got after me
00:50for not trusting him to trust them.
00:53So after that, I didn't say anything.
00:57I was just being obedient.
01:02When you knew filming that doesn't have audio,
01:05it's called B-roll.
01:06So B-roll is just video with audio in the background.
01:09That's what it's called.
01:11The FBI told us that the raid was imminent.
01:16Then we have the stories...
01:17Behind it.
01:18Right.
01:18So we have the audio.
01:21The FBI wanted us to help come up with a ruse
01:24to get Sam away from the girls.
01:27So we played upon Sam's ego.
01:30What do you think of this?
01:31In the studio, sit down with the mic on,
01:34and we get your talking, your life story?
01:37Yeah.
01:38They explained your feelings, you know, your emotions.
01:40Yeah.
01:42We planned an interview of him
01:44that we said was gonna be very helpful
01:47for the world to know who he really was.
01:49Maybe we do one on Tuesday in the morning with you,
01:53one on Wednesday in the morning.
01:55We'll figure it out.
01:56Tolga and Christine wanted to interview Sam.
01:59They said it was for the documentary,
02:01but after a year, then you're wondering, really?
02:05Can I get you to, like, walk in the room,
02:08and Christine, stay there,
02:09and just sit down at the beginning?
02:10Oh, like, from right here, you're saying?
02:13I was observing, like, what's going on.
02:17What's she up to?
02:19So, let's start at the beginning.
02:21What are your dreams?
02:24I want to be an instrument in God's hands
02:26to rule this earth in love and kindness.
02:30Do you like my answers, or do you like them?
02:32I love them.
02:33I just had this gut, fear, feeling inside,
02:38like, who do I trust?
02:42Nobody?
02:48The body is wise, but mine is broken
02:52Unsteady ties of my emotion
02:56They say, trust yourself, but how do you know when?
03:00How do you know when?
03:03What if I fall into the abyss?
03:07What if I swing only just to miss?
03:11What if the rose looks pretty, but the doors cut me?
03:17But what if I trust me?
03:22What if I trust me?
03:47Don't sit where I can see you.
03:49Don't sit where I can see you.
03:49I might get distracted.
03:55I got my pinchers ready.
03:58I got my pinchers ready.
03:58Pinch you on you, your bum.
04:01We were filming Sam do this interview.
04:07Are you a prophet?
04:12I would be a liar if I said I wasn't.
04:14And we purposely made sure that the interview was not finished.
04:20Let me see that other list.
04:22I'll save that question until tomorrow.
04:26Are we good for tonight?
04:28Christine and Tolga, they had him going back the very next morning
04:34so that we could make our entrance in their warehouse.
04:37Okay, so for tomorrow, I have a challenge for you guys.
04:41I would like them to each write a question for you.
04:47I'm going to come and pick them up tomorrow.
04:50The plan was I was going to be with the girls in the greenhouse.
04:56Tolga was going to be with Sam.
04:58Okay, dinner.
05:00Yay!
05:02Put on that light, would you?
05:04There were three structures to be searched,
05:07two houses and one warehouse.
05:10The goal was to obtain evidence of his sex-related crimes.
05:15We just were shooting him tonight,
05:17and we kept the lights up and everything for tomorrow.
05:20Okay.
05:21Now, on the greenhouse, opening the door could be interpreted as,
05:26Oh, she must be the one that told on us.
05:29But having the door jammed in, I don't want the babies to be terrified.
05:35So ultimately, I'll probably be the one to open the door.
05:39I don't want to put you in a position that you don't feel comfortable in.
05:42If you think you're not going to feel comfortable in that house at that time,
05:46don't go.
05:47Oh, I'm going.
05:53Sam confirmed.
05:54Okay.
05:558 a.m.
05:56I said Christine's going to go to the greenhouse,
05:58get questions from the girls.
06:00They'll be there probably an hour later.
06:02And then you'll meet me at the place at 8 a.m.
06:07I'm a little scared.
06:08You're going to be in with them.
06:09You're just going to say, what?
06:10What's going on?
06:11Just, you know.
06:14Now it's a big day.
06:17Are you going to sleep?
06:18No.
06:19Me either.
06:22Let me ask you a question.
06:24What should I wear when I take down a pedophile, huh?
06:27Just the proper outfit.
06:30Hm?
06:46There was a large number of law enforcement getting prepared to serve the search warrant.
06:50They're waiting on my word.
06:53We send a code and it's all systems go.
06:56No.
06:58We were very nervous because there were 50 law enforcement counting on us.
07:06You got to be careful.
07:08I know.
07:18Hi.
07:19Hello.
07:21Do you want some food?
07:23Christine showed up.
07:26Really early in the morning.
07:27She'd never come that early.
07:30Sam had already left for this interview that they were recording.
07:35I remember feeling like, hey, something's weird.
07:40When I went there that morning, everything was so calm and normal.
07:47I thought, their life is about to turn upside down.
07:51I was at the warehouse with Sam and three of his wives.
08:02I look outside.
08:06I don't see any police.
08:08Nothing.
08:09Nothing.
08:09I go back.
08:11Sit down.
08:13I'm rolling in.
08:15You're ready.
08:17Boom.
08:18FBI's there.
08:22The camera was rolling.
08:24Everything.
08:25And they said, turn it off.
08:29I think Sam was very surprised that it was the FBI and that he was facing federal charges.
08:35He didn't say much.
08:38They put him into the car.
08:40Sam was taken away.
08:42It was checkmate.
08:44And then the FBI goes to the greenhouse.
08:50A call came in from one of Sam's wives, who wasn't in the greenhouse.
08:54And I said, can you come search one to search this warehouse and any person in it?
09:00And everything in it.
09:02And I'm like, what in the heck?
09:05Uh-oh.
09:06Personal officer, Jones.
09:08You're blocking the driveway.
09:10Jones blocking the driveway.
09:11Okay, I'll get...
09:12What?
09:14Okay.
09:17If they try, they die and we die.
09:21And they'll be accused of murder.
09:22Where's my pepper sprayer?
09:23I need an AR-15.
09:29I was in the shower.
09:31And I heard the speakers going off outside, like telling everybody to come outside.
09:38And that the home was surrounded.
09:40We have a first warning for this resident.
09:43Come out to the right door.
09:44Put your hands up and follow the officer's man.
09:48Christine was like, you have to go out.
09:50You gotta go out.
09:50I did not want anyone to engage in violence.
09:55I'm gonna check.
09:56I'm gonna check you guys.
09:57So I went out.
09:59And I told them, I will come out with them one at a time.
10:07I'll never forget how I felt as I was walking the younger girls out.
10:13Feeling like they don't know this, but I'm walking them to their freedom.
10:22And they're also about to really, really hate me.
10:28I was one of the first ones that went out.
10:31There was like a line of FBI agents.
10:36And that was when it hit, like, wow, this is real.
10:40Like, we're really being raided.
10:45They had patted us down and took our phones and everything.
10:50And started taking one person at a time and interviewing them.
10:55One of our goals when serving the search warrants was to interview all of the wives,
11:01all of the minor children, and to see what, if we could get any information from any of them.
11:10In the interview, I lied.
11:12I lied a lot in it.
11:15Of the interviews that I conducted, I would say 100% of them didn't tell the truth.
11:24They didn't admit that they were married to Sam.
11:27They didn't admit that the girls were married to Sam.
11:29That's what Sam taught them to do.
11:33We stood out there in the rain for a little while.
11:36I knew the girls were clearly distressed as to what was going on.
11:44And then DCS showed up to take the underage wives in the state custody.
11:51I just want to make sure we can assess safety.
11:55DCS had requested court orders to take the girls without letting us know.
12:00And so it was a surprise to me when they showed up at the house to take the nine girls.
12:06The teenage girls are going to have to know more to the apartment.
12:10We've been given important authorization.
12:11We've been push Christy.
12:13If anybody interferes with the two included following us, et cetera, they can be arrested.
12:17You have the government and then you have God.
12:19We are accountable to God and that's all.
12:22He is the one who gives these children.
12:24We've had issues with once a child is in placement, a parent will go pick that kid up.
12:29That's actually considered kidnapping now.
12:31And it's a felony.
12:35We need each other.
12:41And we're going to pass the test.
12:43We're going to pass the test.
12:45Not even a day.
12:46Not even a day.
12:47They said that if we didn't like you, they would arrest us.
12:51We can't stop them.
12:53They said you can bring your dresses if you want.
12:56You're going to take any calls?
12:59No.
13:00I'm not.
13:01I'm not.
13:03I'm not.
13:09I don't know what I'm going to say.
13:11You're not going to separate us from our marriage or our families.
13:15.
13:20I don't want any man in any vehicle better.
13:25No, we have.
13:26You're not going to want more rights than men.
13:28Yeah, I do not want more rights than men.
13:30I don't trust you.
13:32And he will come again, and one by one we'll rise
13:38to praise his holy name, risen, to bring us home again.
13:49Okay, girls, we've got to go, okay?
13:51It's going to be okay.
13:52The faster we do it, the faster it's over.
14:01It's going to be okay.
14:05We're going to come and get you.
14:06Heavenly Father's on our side.
14:11Goodbye.
14:16I got it.
14:23Sam's nine underage wives were taken to Phoenix and put into a group home.
14:31And some of Sam's adult wives came over to my house.
14:52I took a backpack with a bunch of personal information and stuff that was his, and I threw it out
14:57the window.
14:57Where?
14:58Where?
14:59Oh, good, good.
15:00Yeah, and really get up.
15:02No, they won't get up.
15:03Okay.
15:03Yeah, you're going to get up.
15:04What'd you throw up?
15:05They're sitting out the bathroom window when they're, when they, like, see another friendship.
15:10Okay.
15:10Just calm down.
15:11Sit down and relax.
15:12Don't worry.
15:13I've had my social security number already.
15:16Okay.
15:16Where did they get all the information?
15:18Because they're, like, in, exactly.
15:19They literally came into your house.
15:21They came in, like, yeah, you're, you're Naomi.
15:24You're Naomi.
15:26I was starting to see, like, there's more to the picture.
15:31There's somebody within the group that's been giving them a lot of this stuff.
15:38I don't trust.
15:39I think this has been brewing for a long time.
15:42Because they just know way too much information.
15:48We know the FBI are doing their job, but they come because somebody else called them.
15:55Your girls are here.
15:56I think I'm going to go into the car and crank it on the Bluetooth.
15:59One second.
16:01Just hooking up to the Bluetooth speaker because it's so low to here.
16:04Here we go.
16:05Can you hear?
16:06Yes.
16:07Samuel?
16:09Are you serious?
16:11They took all of our phones like none of us have phones.
16:14I have no idea what's going on.
16:18Just be careful.
16:19I don't know anything wrong anyway, so when they find out it's just a bunch of lies, then
16:24they'll just let me go, so.
16:27Ready?
16:28Okay.
16:29Okay.
16:30Do they have you in a holding cell?
16:33Yeah.
16:37We need you.
16:39Okay.
16:41Okay.
16:41Yeah, we're not doing anything wrong, so it must have been just a simple misunderstanding,
16:44so I should be out tomorrow hopefully.
16:46Okay.
16:47Okay.
16:48They said this investigation has been going on before the Flagstaff thing.
16:58After the raid, I wanted to help them break free of Sam's hold on them.
17:05I wanted to hear what was going on with you, and I, I, um...
17:09I don't care if they have me in custody as long as Father's out.
17:12But I do know that they've got some evidence that is very, very close, so.
17:21So what do you mean by very close to what?
17:23Somebody that knows everything that we do and say.
17:29Okay.
17:30So.
17:32I'm not, I don't know if it's traitors or what among us.
17:38Yeah.
17:39I wanted them to wake up before they found out that I was a Maul.
17:44You'll help everybody.
17:46Not only help us, but you'll go help anybody who asks for help.
17:50You are so kind.
17:51You are such a good.
17:52I'm worried about you.
17:53I just want me to be okay, and I love you, and I want me just to be together and
17:56safe and happy.
18:01After the arrest and search warrants, we had a truckload of evidence.
18:11We had seized cell phones.
18:14We had seized computers.
18:15We had seized journals, calendars to get dates of things that happened, of travel that occurred.
18:28But even with the evidence we got from the search warrant, we still did not have a good child sexual
18:35abuse charge.
18:38The girls were in such a tight-knit group and still believe that Sam was the prophet.
18:45Without an underage victim disclosure, there was not a likely chance of prosecution for a sex crime.
19:00After his arrest, we went back to the Blue House.
19:07Waves like the Queen of England.
19:10We weren't supposed to be in communication with the underage girls.
19:14We're not worried about these girls because they are with each other.
19:18They were all together in the group home, but they got access to a phone.
19:32As soon as my two girls had been taken into custody, then I immediately began to plan getting out.
19:42You moving in?
19:44Is this your last load?
19:45I think so.
19:47Awesome.
19:48I knew I needed to show that I have a safe place and that I can physically and mentally take
19:55care of them so I could get back custody.
19:59Do you do it on this side or this side?
20:02It's this way.
20:03I wanted her to get her girls back and reunite her family.
20:07But also, I wanted her to get out of that environment full of Sam believers because what on earth would
20:14happen to her if they found out that she did not believe and she went to the FBI too?
20:26One day, the lady at the group home that was taking care of the girls had a paper from the
20:34DCS.
20:35She had written this note and ripped it up and put it in the garbage.
20:41One of the younger girls had gotten it out and taped it back together.
20:47She took a picture of that and sent it to me.
20:50And it said something about the girl's trust, the FBI informant, Christine Marie.
21:03Tolga.
21:06What?
21:07DCS just outed us.
21:09What?
21:11They know.
21:12They know.
21:13What do you mean?
21:14Say you know.
21:15That we turned him in.
21:16What do you mean, say what?
21:21Court documents that DCS provided made it very clear that it was Christine and Tolga and Julia that had provided
21:27information.
21:28They are moving to us now?
21:31Yep.
21:32That was not anticipated.
21:33They had been working to help all the women and it just went down, down the toilet.
21:44I felt like they had betrayed me and I sent some really mean texts to Christine and Tolga.
22:03One of the girls just told Tolga to fuck off.
22:07And then she followed it up with something like, have a nice life, traitor.
22:13It was Gnome's.
22:15Yeah.
22:16Everybody was really angry.
22:19Any pictures you have of us you need to give back to us.
22:27Because you guys haven't been honest.
22:29You guys give it back to us and delete it off your devices.
22:32We're on your side, we're not on the other side.
22:35You're a liar.
22:35I know this is going to be hard for you to-
22:38And don't say it.
22:39No, it's that I care.
22:41I know it's going to be hard for you to-
22:43I know that you don't care.
22:45I do care.
22:46You have-
22:47I do care because-
22:48Through your actions, you've split apart a family.
22:52Someday you're going to understand that I really do love you guys and that part is really true.
22:57I mean, your children should not be having sexual experiences.
23:01You know-
23:02But Christine, Jesus' family didn't go to Judas for comfort.
23:06And we're not coming to you for comfort.
23:08I want you to get your children back.
23:09I'll get them back.
23:10They'll have every last one.
23:12And God will fight our battles.
23:14He will deliver us.
23:16We will be free.
23:17And we will be with Samuel together forever.
23:39I remember them saying you're the only one that hasn't betrayed us.
23:43You know?
23:45I just-
23:47But I'm not betraying them.
23:49I'm helping them.
23:51Right?
24:04The text messages started coming in from the people I loved, even from my underage daughters.
24:12I would have liked to have had time with my daughters before they found out.
24:20I was very concerned what my husband, Moroni, would do.
24:27He had been so very loyal to Sam.
24:34I'm at home.
24:36He said, are you ready to talk?
24:39I just wonder if this is the day I face him carefully because he wants me to go on a
24:45ride tonight.
24:56That night, Moroni and I, we talked.
25:00And I talked to him like I'd never talked to him before in my life.
25:07And I said, we are adults.
25:09We are parents.
25:11And we're following a false prophet.
25:14And he's leading us right to hell.
25:18And I'm not gonna go there anymore.
25:21I said, but you have to choose.
25:25He said, either we're damn right or we're damn wrong.
25:29I said, Moroni, we're damn wrong.
25:34And if you want to sit where that man's gonna sit, in prison for life, you can sit with him.
25:42You can choose.
25:43But I choose to get out of this hell.
25:45And I choose to get my children out of it.
25:51And he left that night.
25:53And he said he threw up all night long.
25:56And the anguish.
25:59And I said, you will go through it as you realize what we've done as parents to our children.
26:08I'd never been so bold like that.
26:23I don't even know how to describe it.
26:25It's like you and again and again, the greatest mistake you've made in your life.
26:34I'm responsible.
26:35It's like, what is there in me that allowed that to escalate like that and unchecked, so to speak?
26:50Remarkable.
26:55About six weeks after Sam was arrested, Moroni contacted the FBI and agreed to be interviewed.
27:09During his interview, we learned how much he was involved with Sam Bateman.
27:15Sam has raped my little girls, my adult daughters, my wives and me.
27:21He was able to verify that his daughters were involved in many of the group sex acts where Moroni was
27:30having sex with somebody and Sam was having sex with somebody and Moroni's daughters were there.
27:35I did it.
27:36I did it.
27:36I'm the responsible person for this.
27:38I'm the one that declared it was from God.
27:41Moroni was, in a way, a victim of Sam's manipulation, but I find it very hard to accept or justify
27:51that a father would allow their minor children to go to somebody who is having sex with young girls.
28:06He eventually accepted a plea agreement.
28:10He will be sentenced because he certainly was responsible for crimes against his daughters.
28:19I think that Moroni was hoping to regain his honor for his family, but his daughters still believed Sam was
28:30the prophet.
28:33You have a call from Samuel Bateman.
28:37Father.
28:37Hi.
28:38I'm so grateful for you.
28:41Samuel called every day, all day, on the phone.
28:49When you're in jail, as long as you have money on your books, you can make video calls.
28:55And because he was the prophet, if he wanted money on his books, Torrance was putting money on his books.
29:02Where is my darling O'Dell's?
29:06The underage girls were connected, listening to his orders.
29:12Action is another form of belief.
29:15Sam wanted us to get the girls out of custody from the start.
29:19He told us that they belonged to him, they were his.
29:23Step up.
29:24Okay.
29:26I asked him, if we get caught, what are they going to do to us?
29:31And he said, they've already done whatever they could to you because they took me.
29:37Speaking of himself.
29:41I was like, yeah, that is the worst thing.
29:45And then Sam told us to go pick him up and run.
29:53We took two vehicles.
29:57By the time we got there, it was around 11 o'clock at night.
30:04We picked him up near, like, the freeway bridge.
30:07Where should we go?
30:11He didn't tell us where to take him.
30:15So we split up.
30:18And the underage girls went with my sister-wife.
30:26A group of girls belonging to an offshoot of the fundamentalist LDS Church vanished from child protective service custody in
30:34Arizona.
30:36Bateman has had a number of calls with his wives leading them to believe that they are on the run.
30:41The eight girls who ran away range in age from 11 years old to 16.
30:47The girls are missing.
30:50There was some plan and they all got picked up this morning and all of their stuff is gone.
30:55Oh, my God.
30:56They might be trying to head out of the country.
30:58How people even knew where to find them?
31:02It was like an orchestrated heist.
31:06My two daughters, the youngest girls, were missing out of custody.
31:12I was just in an absolute mental state.
31:16FBI is all over this.
31:18Now, all of these mothers are suspects.
31:21They already put out an alert for the border because they had some inclination they might be trying to leave
31:25the country.
31:27The question is, who was driving that car and where are those girls now?
31:35When the kidnapping occurred, I was concerned because if I lost my victims, I would never get that definitive statement
31:46of what Sam was doing to them.
31:50We had no information as to where they were going.
31:57None of the wives were accounted for.
32:01So we needed to find them.
32:07The greenhouse has been empty, but Moreau and I saw a van parked there.
32:15Go straight.
32:16Oh, yeah, there's still that same light on.
32:17Oh, lights are on.
32:19If they knew the girls came out, they're not that stupid to bring them here.
32:22They do stupid things.
32:23They do stupid things, you're right.
32:26So we called the police.
32:28The question is, who's in there?
32:31I had come back to the greenhouse to pick up food and stuff.
32:37And a policeman showed up.
32:39All I remembered is opening the door.
32:42And they asked me my name and I told them.
32:46Well, I see all the cars there now.
32:49We seriously don't need to be in the way.
32:51No, we're not in the way, baby.
32:53They don't have enough men.
32:54There's only eight people working in the entire department of Colorado City.
32:59He was asking where all the underage girls were.
33:04And at that point, I had no idea.
33:09But the policeman said, you're under arrest.
33:12The next thing I remember, I was...
33:17running.
33:19There she is.
33:21Let's know if you're jumping the wall.
33:23Don't run.
33:24Back there, that way, that way.
33:26Yeah, go this way, go this way.
33:27Talk about the way we came.
33:28Over there, over there.
33:29She was over there by the dumpster.
33:30Get out.
33:32Oh, my gosh.
33:34Come grab her.
33:35She ran so fast and eight police officers couldn't catch her.
33:46I made it all the way to the mountains.
33:50When I started thinking, am I really running?
33:55And I turned around and went back to turn myself in and didn't have the courage.
34:03So I climbed up.
34:05I climbed under a box trailer in the neighbor's yard and climbed up in the axle.
34:20Gnomes is a fugitive of justice.
34:22There's a nationwide arrest warrant.
34:25And if you take her in, you're harboring a fugitive.
34:28And immediately call 9-1-1.
34:30Okay.
34:31She's in big trouble.
34:33He's been running her brain for so long, she doesn't know how to use her.
34:36That's true.
34:38She has passion.
34:40She has commitment.
34:42It's all, it's in all the wrong places.
34:45I'm very worried about her.
34:48I wonder where she went.
34:55I was there all night.
34:57It was freezing.
35:00I froze my leg really bad.
35:06The next morning then, I climbed out and turned myself in.
35:18When Naomi was arrested, I picked her up and I interviewed her on the way to the federal facility.
35:26She wasn't making her own decisions.
35:28She was doing what she had been told.
35:30Um, and she was very scared.
35:34But she didn't know where the minor girls were hiding.
35:40However, because Sam was in prison talking to his wives, we had teams going through those phone calls.
35:49Step up.
35:51Yeah, help us.
35:52Okay.
35:53Okay.
35:54We identified adult wives who had picked up the girls from their group homes and taken them out of state.
36:00He said which vehicles to use, whether to split up, to go different directions.
36:05I was able to track down different Airbnbs that had been reserved or rented on specific accounts.
36:14And found an address of an Airbnb that had been rented by Torrance Biceline up in Spokane, Washington.
36:27I was able to make contact with a local sheriff's department and ask them to go check on the house.
36:36Nobody answered the door to the law enforcement knocks.
36:39But he saw a van leave the house and pulled them over for a traffic violation.
36:49I know, I know they're all in there, in the bar.
36:53Have you guys told me they're missing?
36:55They've identified the eight children that we were looking for.
37:07We were able to get all the girls back into DCS custody.
37:13They all were with Loretta Johnson.
37:16So, Loretta was arrested for kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
37:24What happened?
37:26In the car?
37:28In the car?
37:29She was trying to outspeed them?
37:30She was the adult with the children.
37:31Oh my gosh.
37:36But, Moretta, so innocent of it.
37:46When I went for help, I envisioned myself behind those bars.
37:54Speaking to my children.
37:56Saying, you go on.
37:58You're safe.
38:00Would to God I could trade her places.
38:03She don't belong there.
38:06She depended on us as parents.
38:10To guide her.
38:15Bateman's wife, Moretta Johnson, the teen found with the girls in Washington,
38:19was arrested and will be transferred back here to Arizona.
38:22Two other women were also arrested for their involvement.
38:27I had no idea I was going to be taken to prison.
38:35At first, I was really lost.
38:41My entire life, I was taught that obedience was everything.
38:46First law of heaven.
38:48And now, here I am in prison for my perfect obedience.
38:55That was when I started to wonder about my beliefs.
39:07Even though most of my life, Warren Jeffs was in prison.
39:12In our eyes, he was so holy and righteous.
39:15Sam would read Warren's personal diaries to us almost every night.
39:22Sam was getting a lot of his ideas out of Warren's diaries.
39:34Being isolated in prison.
39:36I actually started thinking a little bit more about it.
39:44I had been in jail for four or five months.
39:47And one day, we were going to the courts for a status hearing
39:53about the situation with Sam.
39:56And they accidentally put me in a cell next to him.
40:01And he talked to me for four hours.
40:05He got all emotional and was all telling me,
40:08oh, I haven't got to talk to anybody for a whole year.
40:12He hadn't even been in there for an entire year.
40:15And that was the first time I actually recognized
40:19he's lying to me.
40:23After that, my whole mind shifted.
40:29Once I questioned one little thing,
40:31then a whole flood, like a tsunami of questions came in.
40:37What am I doing with my life?
40:39Why do I believe the way I believe?
40:41Is there even a God?
40:45And I realized I had been lied to my entire life.
40:50I was born in lies.
40:52And I couldn't even blame my parents for it.
40:55They were born in lies.
40:59When I look back, I see that girl in third person.
41:09I thought I was in love with him.
41:11But now looking back, I understand it was complete fear.
41:20The things that were going on inside were completely different than what was showed.
41:30It's not me.
41:31It was an entirely different person.
41:42It's very disturbing.
41:45Beyond what anybody could fathom.
42:00It's hard.
42:03Not knowing if the girls are doing okay.
42:08Are you able to communicate with gnomes?
42:10Yeah.
42:11She's getting pretty homesick.
42:13She wants to come home pretty bad.
42:16We'll send her love from us.
42:18She might not appreciate it.
42:20But maybe by now she will.
42:28After the kidnapping, all of the minor girls were separated.
42:32They were no longer in group homes.
42:34They all went to foster homes.
42:36They were no longer communicating with Sam or the other older wives.
42:42And that's when things in this case started to open up.
42:48I was able to talk to my daughters in foster care.
42:54When they were separated,
42:56they started to have a better understanding about certain things that happened.
43:02And I had to say to my girls,
43:05could you have said no?
43:06Or I don't want to do this without being punished in some way.
43:12And they all had to say no.
43:15We talked over and over about coming forth with the truth.
43:22The truth is really the best.
43:24It was one of Julia's underage girls who came forward first.
43:31She finally admitted that having sex with Sam did occur.
43:37And she then talked to some of the other girls that had been with Sam.
43:42And a few more of them started to come forward.
43:46They provided the full scope of what was happening on a daily basis.
43:53At a certain point, Sam Bateman was canceling all the religious classes and at-home schooling
43:57so that he could have sex with all of the girls all of the time.
44:03In addition to Sam, we got verification from minor victims
44:08against Sam's adult followers that he had wrapped up into this scheme.
44:12So we arrested Torrance and Liddell and five adult wives of Sam.
44:17And we finally got information that we needed for child sexual abuse charges against Sam Bateman.
44:25It was big.
44:30Tonight, a polygamist leader based in Colorado City, Arizona, is facing serious charges of sexual conduct involving children.
44:37Newly unsealed court documents today show a grand jury indicted him on additional charges.
44:43The allegations are beyond disturbing.
45:06The U.S. Attorney's Office said it was the largest prosecution of the kind in the state that they could
45:12recall.
45:13In my entire career, I have never worked as hard as I had to work for this case.
45:18It being my last case, it...
45:24It validated my entire career.
45:34Samuel Bateman, the polygamist, self-proclaimed prophet, has now been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
45:40The maximum sentence for that plea deal.
45:43FBI investigators state much of their information came from a couple who had been filming a documentary with Bateman,
45:50earning his trust to interview his wives and document their testimonies.
45:55My false prophet was never held accountable for what he did to me.
46:05So, with these young ladies, I was driven to make sure that it would be different from them.
46:22I was incarcerated for 21 months.
46:26When I first got out of prison, I was free for the first time in my life.
46:40It's taken time, but I felt like I was, like, reborn.
46:47Like, every other week, I have a new obsession.
46:50A new thing I'm learning that I had never seen or, like, never even experienced before.
47:00There's just so much that you can do.
47:04I don't plan on staying in the crib forever.
47:12I am in college studying psychology.
47:17I want to understand what happened to me.
47:22Did you ever ask yourself, how did we do these things that are not even in our value system?
47:27I'm learning that I'm not alone.
47:31It takes bravery to stand out and walk on your own.
47:37With Christine, I didn't realize how similar our lives were.
47:43This is an emotional support cat.
47:46Oh, hello!
47:49I understood, finally, why she did what she did.
47:56Where are you?
47:58Pick up Moretta.
47:59This is amazing. How do you feel?
48:01Ah, a lot of anxiety.
48:03What's up, but excitement.
48:06Yes!
48:08Moretta had spent a year in prison.
48:17Her words are, prison set me free.
48:21I don't want to let hell hold birth.
48:23It helped her to get into a thought process of her own.
48:28For me, I've learned some pretty tough and hard lessons, and one of them is I should be able to
48:36ask questions as a woman.
48:42Marona and I, we don't live together as married at this time.
48:49How do I teach my daughters to walk away from it if I can't?
48:54To the fullest.
49:09For the best.
49:11For the best.
49:22For the deepest.
49:27For the best.
49:36What we might have learned from her and our.
49:55Just stand there.
50:04Got it.
50:08Got it.
50:42Got it.
51:08Got it.
51:09Got it.
51:11Got it.
51:11Got it.
51:12Got it.
51:13Got it.
51:14Got it.
51:44Got it.
51:59Got it.
52:01Got it.
52:17Got it.
52:19Got it.
52:35Got it.
52:36Got it.
52:52Got it.
52:54Got it.
53:10Got it.
53:10Got it.
53:11Got it.
53:16Got it.
53:17Got it.
