00:00did you see what i was showing evan earlier today with the tigers and the power rankings
00:04no i don't think well what did i see tigers i heard you mention somebody i didn't hear what
00:09the ranking was last week it was nine what do you think it is now the power ranking was nine
00:15last week was it now i don't know it should be a lot lower because they're terrible right now but
00:20in fact worst team in baseball for the last 10 games i would guess that 20 it's eight
00:30ow the tigers how is it possibly how have they possibly moved up when they've gone two and eight
00:35in their last 10 games because two teams in front of them have had massive injury problems
00:42the cubs were previously eight they dropped down to 10 losing cade horton for the season is a huge blow
00:50the blue jays were fourth they dropped to 12th the season is just two weeks old and toronto's
00:57injury list is already perilously long it includes five starting pitchers three everyday players and
01:03an important reliever so the tigers have i you know the power ranking doesn't mean anything it's not
01:12like a big make the playoffs based on your power ranking but in spite of their struggles they are
01:20and i guess it tells you what they think of justin verland and his impact on the team when he's
01:25on the injured list and they move up where these other teams lose guys to the injured list and they
01:31drop they plummet but it's it's weird when you look at bad starts last week seattle was three
01:40they're now seven because they're four and nine
01:45like philly is six and six um dodgers and yankees are doing really really well
01:52i guess i never really understand what a power ranking is i think different people have different
01:57criteria for it are you is it is it based on what it's clearly not based on what what's happening
02:03right now it's a long-term view well here's what they write our expert panels ranked every team based
02:10on a combination of what we've seen so far and what we already know going into the 162 game marathon
02:14that is a full baseball season so that's that's why and that's how they do it but yeah i mean
02:24they're meaningless and interesting but meaningless they don't mean anything so um i could stop doing
02:31them we could treat it like pro football focus you know grades and just stop talking about them
02:37we can probably discuss this i was only going to get that kind of a reaction i was just always
02:41curious what what the i never understand what the criteria is i mean with the power ranking it
02:47sounds like it's great like a you know i saw power ranking for the pistons the other day and they
02:51had them at three yeah you know they're a real contender for the title the best best team in the
02:55eastern conference but you know still behind uh san antonio and oklahoma city and then seeing where
03:00other teams are are rated and i saw that one of the teams was not talked about it being a
03:04contender
03:05was the cleveland cavaliers i'm like well that's interesting yeah because i thought with james harden that
03:09you might consider that but nope nope the only other contenders in the eastern conference for
03:13the title would be new york and boston yeah in a world where it feels like we don't get the
03:17benefit
03:17of the doubt this is a detroit team that is getting the benefit of the pistons yeah well i'm talking
03:22about
03:22the tiger yeah tigers four and eight they move up in the power rankings but um that's one two is
03:31last night they lose eight six at minnesota
03:37was the only thing that went wrong framber
03:41like i mean framber valdez had the worst outing of his career all eight runs were charged to him
03:47the bullpen gave him no runs the bats got going as the game went on well the bats i mean
03:52it was two
03:53innings where the the tigers were able to score they scored in the sixth and seventh inning
03:57and outside of that nothing and there were missed opportunities but yeah i i think you chalk up the
04:03bad framber in the first inning and then he he settled down um and gave his team a chance to
04:10come
04:10back i guess but when you give up six runs in the inning yeah that's it's a crooked number you
04:14don't
04:14want to see that and you're not expecting your team to score six you know it's the odds are well
04:21against that but yeah do i give the tigers credit for for for trying to put it together a little
04:26bit
04:26sure i mean look i i don't know people may not care at all that with runners in scoring position
04:32last night they went six of 19 uh emmanuel de jesus got in some trouble and finnegan though he also
04:39got
04:40in some trouble because of a couple walks yeah uh will vest had a good inning but you know i
04:46i'm
04:46i'm looking for signs of hopeful signs that the bats are going to come alive maybe those last couple
04:50innings there's something changed we took some angry calls yesterday i mean angry hostile calls
04:57and you know out of a through 11 games they had done nothing to impress and it doesn't change a
05:01whole lot through 12 framber was historically bad and it completely sabotaged any chance that team had
05:08kind of everything else was was fine last night yeah the the only issues i really took away from the
05:15game that i had with the game last night were late in the game there were a couple of missed
05:20opportunities one was i think it was riley green may have been at the plate with and had a chance
05:25to
05:26challenge a call and he didn't challenge it and it looked like it was definitely going to be ball four
05:29and he didn't uh didn't challenge that um kevin mcgonigal had two runners on they're down eight to six
05:37need base runners and they gave him the green light so this is interesting i like the green light at
05:43times
05:43i don't like it when you're i don't know if i like it so much when you're down and you're
05:48trying to
05:48you got pressure going on this pitcher and you have the chance to load the bases and with carrie carpenter
05:56coming up or glaber torres coming up next i glaber torres i guess um i wanted to see that it
06:01was the top
06:02of the eighth they had first and second with two outs and a 3-0 count on mcgonigal and yeah
06:11he swung
06:11and it's the second time i've seen him swing 3-0 and is it does the batter have the latitude
06:20to make
06:20that decision was i didn't see after the game if he was you know if that question came up um
06:27but
06:28it's really interesting because that's either ultimate trust already in this young kid and his
06:33bat because that's superstar treatment well it's it's also aggressive the tigers are an aggressive team
06:40yeah so aj hinch may tell his players yeah i'll trust you to know what the strike zone is and
06:46on
06:46three and oh i'll give you the green light but you got to be you it's got to be the
06:50right situation
06:50you're waiting specifically for a pitch in a specific spot if it's there grip it and rip it you know
06:56if
06:56you're waiting for the fastball i think it's gonna be with the heart of the plate and it's there go
07:00but you know other guys maybe you don't you don't trust everybody with that
07:04that kevin mcgonigal obviously has a command of what the strike zone is seems to yeah i mean
07:11he got under it popped it up unfortunately and uh and that was that but i down two runs with
07:17two guys
07:17on and you have the chance to load them up and there's a different kind of pressure when the
07:21bases are loaded so i mean that was just to me i wouldn't have done that wouldn't have given the
07:26green light and that's the guy that if anybody i'm going to give you the green light to it's probably
07:30kevin mcgonigal it's already like he's already reached that status yeah but they're they're 12
07:36games into the season a.j hinch is he's still feeling things out he's got that's why i think
07:41you're seeing a lot of is he i do i think it's so much the same team it is but
07:47but you're you're
07:48trying different situations and trusting guys and and you're he's i don't think he's going to manage
07:55in the middle of may the way he's met managing in the middle of april i just think that
07:59you're still like this is this is still fresh from spring training um i don't know i i just
08:07think that this is it's different than once you're 50 games into the season you know here we are 12
08:13games into the season and a lot of swing and miss with this team a positive on last night they
08:19didn't
08:19strike out much they struck out six times but then again over is not a strikeout pitcher they get a
08:2414 strikeout rate so you shouldn't be striking out against him um but it was disappointing that they
08:29didn't get to over like they have in the past he's given up 11 runs in 10 innings against the
08:34tigers last year uh and and it hasn't been very good going into the start last night it's a missed
08:40opportunity and now it's four losses in a row they've only won two other last 10 games and they
08:46go at it this afternoon and let's get something going here because it's not your stopper your two
08:52stoppers lost your two stoppers had two horrible innings horrible you know tarik scuble couldn't
08:58get out of the fifth inning gave up four runs they gave up 12 runs in two innings framber and
09:02scuble
09:0210 runs so i thought i thought uh it wasn't a four run inning off of uh oh you're right
09:07uh because
09:08it was eight total but it was six in the first two later my butt my bank it's okay so
09:12it now you got
09:13jack flarity going today i don't look at jack flary as being a stopper but need him to be a
09:17stopper
09:18need him to be well i wonder if there's going to be an uprising with regarding uh the lineup today
09:25okay some change some changements yeah we'll get to that at 145 or 11 45 carson anderson 971
