00:01This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:05Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced,
00:07and all suspects shown are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
00:22In the Turner Park neighborhood.
00:32A concerned father checks on his son after several calls go unanswered.
00:49They find the son lying on the floor in a back room, stabbed multiple times.
01:00Wake him up!
01:02He's gonna wake up!
01:04Go ahead and call Major Pan.
01:06Yeah.
01:06So we're gonna get the people out here to get all the evidences.
01:09Uh, no, no, no, no!
01:20For homicide detectives, their chance of solving a murder is cut in half if they don't get a lead within
01:28the first 48 hours.
01:49Reginald, yeah.
01:50Sergeant Nathan Schilling will lead the investigation.
01:54Contract with Dad, it's 10 o'clock this morning.
01:56We're walking up in the yard.
01:57Said he thought it was odd that the predictor never came out.
02:00He said, I called. No answer.
02:02Eventually, he said, at some point, I called Dad.
02:04Dad says, I'm on my way.
02:06Dad gets here, he's unlocked.
02:08They go in, kind of mill through the house.
02:10The contractor sees the victim laid on the floor, you know, a lot of blood.
02:14Quite a bit of blood.
02:17The victim, John Christopher Fender.
02:2157-year-old John Christopher Fender, known as Chris, was born and raised in Tulsa.
02:27He worked as an insurance agent and spent much of his spare time working on his home and cars.
02:33He leaves behind a large family, including his father and stepmother, sister, and several nieces and nephews.
02:43Victim is in this house.
02:44Okay.
02:46They got the warrant.
02:47The team secured a warrant to search Chris' home.
02:55And here is really where everything hurt, I believe.
03:06So, stabbed.
03:09Chris was stabbed more than 70 times.
03:18There's a lot of blood on the ground.
03:22Over here, there's a lot more.
03:26It is everywhere.
03:32These shoes, I believe, were a part of it.
03:35Oh, wow.
03:38And there's a knife that's sitting on top of that sink down there.
03:44A second knife and a bloody t-shirt are discovered in the kitchen trash can.
03:50Is there a camera supposed to be in the house?
03:52There are.
03:54Chris has surveillance cameras inside and outside of his home.
03:58I'll have to take it.
04:00It's the passcode law.
04:02The system will have to be accessed by the cyber unit.
04:06Thank you guys.
04:06Thank you so much.
04:11I got the contractor here.
04:12He said he's willing to come down if we need to interview him.
04:15Dad is very, very emotional.
04:18And I understand.
04:19You know, you walk in and find your son like that.
04:22The suspect is Blake McDonald.
04:25Chris's father told responding officers that he believes Chris's ex-boyfriend, Blake,
04:30may be responsible for his son's murder.
04:34This is Blake.
04:35He's about six foot tall, about 109 pounds.
04:38White male?
04:39Yes.
04:40Approximately 29 years old.
04:42These two have been fighting a lot this past year.
04:45This Blake guy had been living there.
04:47Supposedly he had been kicked out, but he apparently moved back in.
04:52Also, there was a check for well-being out here last night.
04:55Last night, around 9 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Chris's house after a clerk at a marijuana dispensary
05:02reported that Blake had come into the store and made threatening statements.
05:06Did he make contact with the victim at 9?
05:09Nope.
05:09Did he knuckle the door?
05:11Tried to go around back to look.
05:13Didn't make contact with anybody.
05:15All right.
05:21My name is Nathan Schilling.
05:23I'm going to be the lead detective on this case.
05:25Schilling speaks with Chris's father.
05:27This is my partner, Detective Warren.
05:29He's already spoken to you.
05:31You've been around some and I know it.
05:35But I doubt he's ever, ever seen anybody more pissed than I am right now.
05:41Ever.
05:42The doctor totally understand a lot.
05:45Totally understand why.
05:47I broke 67 bones.
05:49I've had knives stuck in me.
05:50I've been hit with lightning twice.
05:52I've towed three cars, 140 miles an hour stooping me when I was young.
05:56And brother.
05:58All the I've been through doing.
06:02You don't.
06:03You don't.
06:07You don't.
06:08We can't leave with this.
06:09You don't.
06:10I'm sorry, man.
06:10I'm sorry.
06:11You really are.
06:12This isn't how it's supposed to be.
06:14No.
06:14Parents aren't supposed to bury their kids.
06:17I'm so sorry, sir.
06:19I wish I had been there.
06:23I'll say this and I said it to the other police officers.
06:27He's been making me nervous the last two weeks.
06:29Chris's neighbor speaks up about Blake.
06:32I never had a conversation with him because he was always a little bit strange.
06:35I saw him at the gym a couple weeks ago and he was talking to himself and being weird and
06:39pacing around.
06:40I wasn't even using any equipment.
06:41I'll talk to anybody, but I just kept my distance with him.
06:48Then.
06:49Suspect card.
06:502006 Lincoln sedan.
06:52Maroon in color.
06:52AXR.
06:53The team gets the tag number for Blake's car.
06:57It checks back to Blake's name, mother's address, and this is mom's address.
07:02Someone else already went out there and made contact.
07:06Officers spoke to members of Blake's family, but no one has seen or heard from him.
07:11You got guys moving around right now, kind of looking for the car.
07:14Yes, sir.
07:14A statewide bolo has been issued for Blake's car.
07:17We got a tag number, which is good.
07:19We just gotta look at it.
07:27One hour in.
07:28It's been kind of progressively getting worse over like the last month.
07:31Another neighbor approaches Schilling about Blake's behavior.
07:35I watched him just last week.
07:37He sat out here just walking back and forth into the carport.
07:39Just yelling and talking to himself and sitting there having a full-blown argument with nobody.
07:44There was something definitely wrong with him.
07:46I don't know exactly what it was, but he definitely needs some help.
07:50All right.
07:52So I think my partner already said you'd be willing to go downtown and visit with us?
07:58Yeah.
07:59Chris's contractor agrees to be interviewed at headquarters.
08:02We can go together if you want.
08:05You come with me?
08:05Oh, yeah. Yeah.
08:07Chris's father also agrees to talk downtown.
08:10We'll talk to you each individually and get your story.
08:12I don't have a story.
08:14And I know who's done it.
08:15And you know who's done it.
08:19Dad immediately thought that Blake was the person that did this.
08:23So we're leaning towards that.
08:24We don't necessarily know yet.
08:25We'll find out.
08:27We're going to find Blake.
08:38Blake Matthew McDonald.
08:4029-year-old Blake McDonald, an aspiring actor from Tulsa, works the night shift at a home improvement store.
08:47He has no prior convictions.
08:49It would appear that, I mean, there's really no other suspect other than his significant other at this point.
08:55We still have to dot our eyes and cross our T's because we don't want to jeopardize anything.
09:01So we're going to holler at the victim's dad and the contractor that was working in the yard.
09:06Try to get a little bit more of the backstory.
09:08We'll go get this rolling.
09:12I know we spoke a little bit out there and we got a kind of summary of what you saw
09:17and what happened today.
09:18Detective Reggie Warren starts with Chris's contractor.
09:21You were over the house today doing some landscaping, concrete work, stuff like that.
09:27How long have you known the day for?
09:29Ten years.
09:31Maybe longer than that.
09:35What kind of guy would you describe him as?
09:39Good person, kind person, very witty.
09:46You know, he had a real good sense of humor about him.
09:49Great guy.
09:50Great guy.
09:51Okay.
09:52Today you got to the house.
09:54Mm-hmm.
09:54But what time did you get there?
09:56I got there this morning around 10 o'clock.
09:59And I just got my toes out and went to work.
10:04Chris had not been out of his house all day.
10:08So I called him.
10:10Okay.
10:10You didn't get any answers.
10:11I didn't get any answers.
10:13And then I done some more work and I called him again.
10:18Got no answer.
10:20So then I called his dad and I said,
10:23Hey, have you heard from Chris?
10:25I can't get a hold of him.
10:27I said, his cars are here, but I hadn't seen him all day.
10:30He said, that's strange.
10:31Something's wrong.
10:32I'll be there and we'll check on him.
10:34He was about to put the key in the door and I said,
10:36Hey, why don't you try that door and see if it's locked first?
10:39And when he opened it up, something told me for sure then something's not right
10:44because Chris does not leave his door unlocked even when he's in the house.
10:51So then I hollered for Chris, didn't get no response.
10:54And I turned the corner to go into the office and on the door frame there was just covered in
11:01blood.
11:04I went around and I noticed he's laying there on his back.
11:08And that's when I ran out of the house and I said, I'm going to call an ambulance.
11:15So just kind of describe the relationship between Chris and Blake.
11:21I guess the word would be tumultuous.
11:24Uh-huh.
11:24They were in a relationship.
11:26Uh-huh.
11:27I know they were having lots of arguments about different things.
11:30Chris had kicked Blake out for breaking and drugging.
11:34Uh-huh.
11:34And cheating on him.
11:36Uh-huh.
11:38I feel like probably if anybody was to do it, it would be Blake.
11:59I didn't like Blake.
12:02He's just straight.
12:10Always pacing, talking to himself.
12:14Very disturbing.
12:15That's not normal.
12:17I really appreciate you coming in.
12:19Yeah.
12:23I feel for his dad.
12:24His dad's never going to be the same.
12:26I feel for his dad as well.
12:27I feel for all these guys.
12:31Chris.
12:32In the next room.
12:33I knew Chris was dead.
12:37I knew it.
12:39Chilling.
12:40Speaks with Chris's father.
12:42Yeah.
12:43Just...
12:44Sometimes you just know when something's not right.
12:47I knew Blake was going to kill him.
12:52But I always thought Chris could protect himself.
12:56Chris was a father figure to him.
12:59So is Blake considerably younger than Chris?
13:02Yes.
13:0330 years ago.
13:07He started to help and he started to guide him.
13:10Blake had no friends, no relationship with the father figure.
13:14Very little relationship with his mother.
13:17But he always had these...
13:20He talked crazy in his head.
13:22Did Chris ever express any concerns about his behavior to you?
13:27Yeah.
13:29He told me...
13:31He's constantly patient.
13:34Talking to himself.
13:37He's a...
13:37He needs to get some mental help.
13:41Chris is always talking to me about he's wanting to help him.
13:44He's hoping that he can talk to him and he'll listen
13:49and kind of mentally straighten himself out.
13:54He took on a project, Chris did, if you will.
13:58He's got a good heart.
14:00How long have, uh...
14:03Chris and Blake known each other?
14:04Well, it has to be he was 19.
14:08Blake was 19?
14:09Yes.
14:09He says Chris met Blake 10 years ago.
14:13And I don't know how they met.
14:16So there's no one else that lives there besides Chris and Blake?
14:22Blake, yes, that's sometimes.
14:24Blake's there sometimes, sometimes he's gone?
14:26Chris has kicked him out, okay?
14:28He had to call his clothes in the car.
14:29He's been gone.
14:30When was this?
14:31He says Chris asked Blake to move out three or four months ago.
14:35So at some point he let him back in though,
14:38because it sounded like Blake's been around the last couple of weeks.
14:43Yeah, he's been there off and on.
14:45He was sleeping in his car.
14:47Chris wouldn't let him in.
14:49Are you aware if either of them ever mess around with any kind of drugs?
14:53Yeah, Blake all the time.
14:54Not Chris ever.
14:56Okay.
14:57I mean, obviously our goal is to go find Blake at this point.
15:00And, um, I appreciate you coming down here and visiting with me.
15:17Four hours in.
15:18Talking to officers of the scene, they told me that a call had come in last night from the dispensary
15:24here south of downtown.
15:26Blake had been in there and the worker called in at like nine and said that he had made some
15:34homicidal and suicidal statements.
15:36They rattled her.
15:38Pablo made contact with her, got her to come downtown and talk to us.
15:49Hello.
15:49Hi.
15:50I'm gonna go on a limb and say that one of my partners talked to you about what this was
15:54about.
15:55Mm-hmm.
15:55Okay.
15:57Tell me what happened to the best of your recollection, all right?
16:01Okay.
16:04Um, he came into the dispensary.
16:07He was moving, like, very erratically.
16:10Like, he's been like that the past couple of times he's been in the store.
16:14Like, I recognized him when I pulled his name out.
16:16He sketches me out a little bit.
16:18He said he needed dime cards and then he started talking about how he was going to go kill someone.
16:29And he said at one point he was going to ax someone.
16:34He said something like, you're going to see this on the news tomorrow.
16:37And that was when I was like, I have to call the police.
16:56It took me, like, 20 minutes to make the call because we were busy with other people.
17:06Did it sound like he was going to go and do something to more than one person?
17:12No, because he made it sound like he was going to hurt himself, too.
17:16Like, he was going to either kill himself or he was going to die somehow.
17:22Like, I'm going to die, too, or I want to die tonight.
17:27Okay.
17:28Well, thank you for calling.
17:30I know this has to be hard for you.
17:32It's, uh, not an everyday occurrence.
17:36Hmm.
17:37All right.
17:38We'll, uh, get you out of here.
17:44That girl's in shock.
17:46She was scared to death.
17:47She is.
17:48She feels real bad.
17:49Her boss is like, I can get you a video.
17:51Detective Pablo Zuniga pulls up surveillance video he collected from the dispensary.
17:56That's him getting there.
17:58He's running in.
18:00Blake arrives at 8.22 p.m.
18:05So he's walking.
18:06He's incredibly agitated.
18:09All kinds of movements everywhere.
18:12This isn't sped up or anything.
18:14This is his real speed.
18:16He's whacked out.
18:19The clerk is saying that he's very agitated and angry and just making statements about wanting
18:25to hurt people with an axe.
18:29He mentioned that he was also going to die or kill himself.
18:38He does, like, a double gun move to his head right there.
18:46Over here, he starts making stabbing motions to his own neck.
18:52Poor girl's like, I just want to get you out of here.
18:58Those are the shoes that's in the house with the blood.
19:06That's pretty good.
19:09And here he's premeditating.
19:11I'm going to go.
19:12Oh, yeah.
19:13This might be one of the most premeditated murders I've had.
19:19That's it.
19:22Blake leaves the dispensary at 8.27 p.m.
19:27And then his vehicle hits flop, going westbound on Admiral Harbor, right at 2103.
19:32At 9.03 p.m., 36 minutes after Blake left the dispensary, his car was picked up by license plate
19:38cameras driving away from Chris's house.
19:41I wonder if he went home and then he killed him, and then he fled the scene.
19:47The employee from the dispensary called in at 20.52.
19:50According to her, it was about a 20-minute time lapse.
19:53He gave his address.
19:54Officers went by the house.
19:56Body cam footage from yesterday.
19:59McNeil pulls up body cam from the officers sent to check on Blake.
20:07This officer's checking the perimeter, trying to get in contact with someone at the house.
20:11And nobody's answering the door.
20:12I'm thinking, our victim's in the house dead already.
20:15But this officer doesn't know.
20:17I mean, there's no reason for him to think anything's going on in the house.
20:20He walked to each side of the house, looked over the fence.
20:26Calls place.
20:27He knocked multiple times.
20:29I mean, there's no reason for him to do anything more.
20:35He got there really right at 2101.
20:3921, close to 2102.
20:41And his vehicle's hitting the flood down the street at 2103.
20:45So I think that's when he's playing the scene.
20:48The officer arrived at the house one minute after license plate cameras captured Blake's car leaving the scene.
20:54So they barely missed him.
20:56Barely missed him.
20:57And so, is it possible it could happen in that, that's a small window?
21:03I think it had to happen in that window.
21:05If he's got the shoes on at the dispensary and they're clean, he's not covered in blood.
21:12I think his phone data will tell the tale.
21:15Yeah.
21:15This waiting on AT&T.
21:17McNeil sent a warrant to Blake's phone company requesting his location records.
21:21We should hopefully get some data hopefully by tomorrow.
21:25Nice.
21:26Hopefully.
21:27Hopefully.
21:32Seven hours in.
21:34The suspect called at 359 AM.
21:38He said that his roommate just tried to stab him.
21:41Dispatch informs the team that Blake called 911 eight hours after the murder from near Stringtown, Oklahoma.
21:48It sounds like an hour and a half, two hours?
21:51Two and a half hours.
21:51Two hours.
21:52Not too long.
21:53Stringtown is about 125 miles south of Tulsa.
21:59Tulsa police.
22:01Um, me and my boyfriend got into some sort of oprogation.
22:06Like, he tried stabbing me.
22:10I drove away to, you know, get the fresh air.
22:15I was in shock.
22:16Yeah.
22:28I was in shock.
22:29What is your name?
22:30Blake McDonald.
22:32Blake McDonald.
22:38I just don't know what happened to him.
22:41He was okay when I left.
22:42What location are you at?
22:44I need to send an officer to speak with you and take the report.
22:48I'm in the train like Tulsa and Springtown right now.
22:52Okay.
22:53So do you plan on coming back to Tulsa?
22:55I don't have a car.
22:57I hit a deer.
22:57I'm on the side of the highway walking to Springtown.
23:01All right, Blake, what I'm going to do, I'm going to put this in and see if an officer or
23:06a supervisor will receive you at all.
23:08All right, thank you.
23:09No problem.
23:10A supervisor called Blake, but he didn't answer.
23:14I wonder if somebody came in contact with that car.
23:17I already called them.
23:19Zuniga reached out to the local sheriff's department and asked them to look for Blake's car.
23:24Their assistant chief called back and said, if we run into the car, we'll give you a call back.
23:28But their dispatch said, according to their records, they had no, nobody out asking for help for hitting a deer
23:34or anything last night.
23:38He called the police last night and said that his boyfriend tried to stab him.
23:44To me, I feel like the call is self-serving.
23:47I would argue that, you know, he just called to try to give himself some sort of self-defense claim.
23:53Eight hours in, the team still has no leads on Blake's whereabouts.
23:57I would be concerned for the safety of others at this point.
24:01Talking to witnesses, he's got some abnormal behaviors.
24:05Sometimes there's medical issues for that, and other times it's drug-induced.
24:10And then sometimes, which is probably more common than not, a combination of the two.
24:16You know, there's a lot of struggles with both of those in society.
24:21And when someone that has some mental health issues exacerbates it with drug use, then, you know, it's kind of
24:28a tempest.
24:37One hour later.
24:39So Margo, doing what Margo does, she did an offline search on Blake and found out that a deputy down
24:48outside of Kiowa ran Blake.
24:50Crime analyst Margo Hayne-Bell discovers that around midnight last night, a deputy found Blake's car on the side of
24:57the road in Pittsburgh County, Oklahoma.
25:01So that's probably 100 miles south of here.
25:04The deputy said, yeah, the car was disabled, parked on the side of the road.
25:09They found him walking down the highway with a laceration to his face.
25:13Blake says he hit a deer.
25:15The deputy gave him a ride to Kiowa and dropped him off at a convenience store.
25:20Blake got a ride from the deputy four hours before he called 911 from Stringtown to report that his boyfriend
25:27had tried to stab him.
25:30Stringtown's probably another 30 miles down the highway.
25:33You know, if Blake had really been assaulted, the first opportunity he comes in contact with law enforcement, you know,
25:39when you think it might be something important to tell them.
25:42But the deputy said when he asked Blake what happened to his face, Blake said the deer kicked him in
25:48the face.
25:49So I'm going to later decide that maybe it's in my best interest to try to get ahead of this
25:54and at least put a self-defense story up.
25:57So I think it's pretty clear that it's just trying to cover his tracks when he makes that phone call.
26:08Then...
26:10So according to phone stuff, he's somewhere in Texas.
26:15Blake's phone location records finally come in.
26:18Somewhere in Dallas-Fort Worth airport area.
26:21Somewhere in there.
26:23That was at 9.02 p.m.
26:25Blake's phone was last picked up by cell towers near Dallas four hours ago.
26:30They're hoping it's due to fly to Afghanistan.
26:34We called Dallas-Fort Worth Police Department, the airport police, and they're checking their terminals.
26:38But I think there's hotels around the terminals.
26:41This place is so huge.
26:44There's a lot of different areas he could go, a lot of ground to cover.
26:47So Sergeant Stiles is going to reach out to some federal agents and see if they can help us and
26:52figure out where he went.
26:53Okay.
26:54Let me get on it and I'll take some info for you.
26:56Awesome.
26:57The unfortunate part is he might have already hopped on the flight.
27:10The next morning...
27:12All right.
27:12Thank you so much, sir.
27:13Okay.
27:14Of course.
27:14Bye.
27:15Pretty important news.
27:16We have some contacts down at the FBI and they were able to check the flight itineraries for my suspect
27:25and it would appear he is on a flight currently from Dallas to JFK and has a connecting flight onto
27:33Paris.
27:35Obviously, we want to snatch him before he leaves the country.
27:38Blake's flight is due to land at JFK Airport in New York in two hours.
27:42I'm going to try to get this warrant knocked out really quick so that when they land, they'll board the
27:47plane and take him into custody.
27:52One hour later...
27:54So, uh, got a warrant issued, $5 million bond since he was trying to flee the country.
27:58Oh, my mercy.
27:59What?
28:00That's what I'm talking about.
28:02Hopefully, the Port Authority up in New York will be able to pick him up as soon as he lands
28:07and, uh, we're going to go talk to the family.
28:10Hopefully, while we're talking to him, we'll get him in custody.
28:26Come on in.
28:28Come on in.
28:29Schilling and Warren update Chris's family.
28:32As soon as we hear something, we'll let y'all know.
28:36I'll give you my notes.
28:38Oh, thank you.
28:40Take care.
28:41Yes, sir.
28:42Yes, sir.
28:43As Schilling and Warren leave Chris's family,
28:481,400 miles away at JFK Airport, Blake's plane has just landed.
29:20Sir, Blake.
29:22How are you?
29:23Do you want to be on you?
29:24Yeah.
29:27I see you, I think.
29:28Yeah.
29:31Put all your stuff right there?
29:32All the stuff?
29:33Yep.
29:33He's right there, right here.
29:34Jan's running back there.
29:35Yeah.
29:36Port Authority police officers take Blake into custody.
29:54Back in Tulsa.
29:58He's in custody.
30:00They're emailing me what they have.
30:01All right.
30:02Let me just run in there and tell them real quick.
30:07See, I just had to try to leave.
30:09He's in custody.
30:10He got him.
30:11They got him up there.
30:12They got him on the plane.
30:13I don't know the story yet, but we'll hear it.
30:16We got some work to do.
30:17We'll talk to God.
30:26Later that afternoon...
30:27There's quite a bit of evidence that he had with him.
30:29His clothing he was wearing, and he had two backpacks of stuff.
30:34Blake will be held in New York until he can be extradited back to Tulsa.
30:39We may try to go up there and take an opportunity to interview him,
30:43but eventually he will be brought back to Tulsa and have to answer for what he's done.
30:50With just over 24 hours left in the first 48,
30:53the team must now wait to hear Blake's side of the story.
31:11Eight days later...
31:12Well, we just landed in New York City, so...
31:16Me and Pablo, this is the first for us.
31:19Schilling and Zuniga arrive in New York City, both for the first time.
31:23Sergeant Schilling's going to talk to the suspect tomorrow.
31:26I'd like to just kind of touch base with him,
31:29let him know, you know, that we are investigating it.
31:33You know, there's obviously two sides to every story,
31:35and right now, you know, we don't really have either side.
31:38We just have the physical evidence to it.
31:40He got booked into Queen's Central Booking,
31:42and then after that, he ended up getting transferred to Rikers Island.
31:45You hear about it in movies?
31:47Probably never thought you were going to be getting to go there.
31:52It's all downhill from here, Pablo.
31:56You've peaked.
31:57You've peaked way too early.
31:58Yeah.
32:00So this is my first time in New York City,
32:05and it's one of those places I think is kind of like a bucket list place for a lot of
32:09people.
32:09Detective White, who's our local tour guide,
32:13he gave me enough to do to fill up a week or two,
32:15but we don't have that much time,
32:17so if we get the opportunity, I'd love to see the World Trade Center.
32:21It's kind of the one thing that's really on my list.
32:26Two hours later, while we wait to talk to Blake.
32:39Older people talk about where they were, like when JFK was assassinated or Elvis Presley died,
32:44but for me, one of the biggest significant events was 9-11.
32:47I was actually in training, driving around Tulsa with a senior police officer,
32:52and all this stuff's going on in New York,
32:54and it's just, you know, now, gosh, 23 years later,
33:00I'm getting to come here and kind of see it for the first time.
33:06I'll do a hot dog.
33:07I want a hot dog, too.
33:08One hot dog?
33:08Two.
33:09One hot dog.
33:09Okay.
33:10Thank you, sir.
33:13Man, it's good.
33:16There's five buildings I can see right now that are all bigger than any building we have.
33:21And that's just this side of the street.
33:24That's wild.
33:25So we're going to go over to Rikers at 11,
33:29and holler at Blake.
33:31It's a place that's, I don't know,
33:34a bit intimidating.
33:36It's like, you know, it's not Alcatraz,
33:39but if you talk about jails that people have heard of,
33:43that's one of them.
33:45Yeah.
33:49The next morning.
33:50So we're on our way to Rikers now,
33:51and we're going to go meet with Blake
33:54and let him know that we're interested in his side of the story,
33:59and if he decides to talk to us, great.
34:01If not, then, you know, go with what we have.
34:07Nathan Schilling.
34:08Nice to meet you, bro.
34:08Nice to meet you as well.
34:10NYPD will escort Schilling and Zuniga
34:12across the bridge to Rikers Island.
34:19Hey, Blake.
34:21I am Sir Ken Kenney Jones.
34:24Also, Oklahoma, this is a partner
34:26all over the Zuniga.
34:29We just wanted to let you know that
34:31we are interested in what you have to say,
34:34and I'd love to hear your side of the story.
34:51Walk in, lawyer.
34:53Okay.
34:54Okay.
34:57Do you have any questions for me
34:59about anything at this point?
35:01I don't know.
35:03All right.
35:06You know, it's a little anticlimactic.
35:09He immediately said, I want my attorney,
35:12but he starts pointing at his face,
35:14at the cuts on his face.
35:16So he's trying to tell me something
35:17without telling me something,
35:19but ultimately, you know,
35:21he chose not to tell us.
35:23Unfortunately for him,
35:24there's a mountain of evidence against him.
35:26So whether he talks or not,
35:28it's going to be a hard case to beat.
35:34Two hours later...
35:35Is that everything up in the conference room?
35:37All right.
35:38Schilling and Zuniga meet
35:39with Port Authority detective Michael McDaniels
35:41to collect Blake's belongings.
35:44Were you actually on the plane
35:45when he got arrested or...?
35:47Yeah, yeah.
35:47Oh, nice.
35:48Did you think he was surprised or shocked or...?
35:51I wouldn't say he was really surprised.
35:53He kept his head down,
35:55didn't really talk.
35:56He was very cooperative.
35:57At one point,
35:58I don't remember the exact wording,
36:00but somehow he uttered,
36:02uh, he stabbed me.
36:06There was another interaction with him
36:07when we were in the cells.
36:08He said,
36:09Detective, I said, I have a question.
36:10I said, sure.
36:11He said, uh,
36:12did he die?
36:14I hear a guy saying,
36:16I have a warrant for murder.
36:17Did he die?
36:17I said, all I can tell you
36:18is that you have a warrant for murder
36:20out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
36:23And he said, okay.
36:29So this is the bags.
36:32Well, I mean,
36:33this is the clothing.
36:35We were asked not to go through it
36:36so we didn't even open.
36:38Okay, excellent.
36:39Blake's luggage
36:40will be searched
36:41for possible evidence
36:42back in Tulsa
36:43after the team
36:44has secured a warrant.
36:45I think that's everything.
36:47Thanks so much.
36:48No problem.
36:52This morning was not
36:53quite what we hoped for,
36:55but this was a good trip.
36:58I'm glad we came.
36:59It's a new work.
37:00It's pretty spectacular.
37:01Great place to visit,
37:02but there's no place like home.
37:14Blake got brought back
37:16on Thursday,
37:18so he is now
37:19at the Tulsa County Jail.
37:21I was able to get
37:22a search warrant
37:22for the bags
37:24that Blake had
37:25with him on his flight.
37:26In the check bag,
37:28ended up finding
37:30kind of a military-style
37:31like K-Bar knife.
37:34I don't see any blood on it.
37:36I don't know.
37:37There's nothing
37:38that gives me reason
37:39to believe
37:39that this was involved in it.
37:41And also,
37:42found a tomahawk-style axe.
37:46So,
37:48you know,
37:48again,
37:49it doesn't look like
37:50it was involved
37:50in the actual incident,
37:52but the fact
37:53that the witness
37:53from the dispensary
37:54said that he said
37:55he was going to go axe somebody,
37:57he could play a role
37:58in the investigation.
38:00I have some DVR footage
38:02I've also been able
38:03to review.
38:04The Cyber Crimes Unit
38:05was able to access
38:06Chris's surveillance system
38:08and sent chilling
38:09several clips of Blake
38:10inside the house
38:12at the time of the murder.
38:15So he pulls
38:16into the driveway.
38:17Twelve minutes
38:18after leaving
38:19the marijuana dispensary,
38:20Blake arrives
38:22at Chris's home.
38:23For whatever reason,
38:24it doesn't pick up
38:25the initial him
38:26walking in the house.
38:28This is literally
38:30two minutes after
38:31he pulled into
38:31the driveway.
38:35It would appear
38:36that he's already
38:37had an altercation
38:38with the victim.
38:39And he ended up
38:41back outside somehow.
38:45He's coming back
38:46in the front door
38:47and he's already
38:49bloody.
38:50Then he pulls
38:51the knife out
38:51and goes back
38:52to where our victim
38:53was found.
38:56You can see him
38:57over here
38:57a little bit.
39:01It's almost like
39:02he's talking to him.
39:14It would appear
39:15that Blake took
39:16a shower after.
39:18You know,
39:19we definitely have
39:19self-defense cases.
39:21You know,
39:22you have people
39:23get into a fight
39:24and someone pulls
39:24out a knife
39:25and stabs someone
39:26once, twice,
39:26three times
39:27in quick succession
39:29to get away
39:30and then that
39:31person dies.
39:32You know,
39:32that's a little
39:33bit understandable.
39:35But to stab
39:37someone at least
39:3871 times,
39:41numerous stab wounds
39:42to the chest,
39:43to the back,
39:44to the back of the head,
39:45that's not consistent
39:46with a self-defense claim.
39:48I think in this case
39:50there's no question
39:52that Blake was
39:53going to kill Chris.
39:54He's saying that
39:55before it happens.
39:57So he has lost
39:59pretty much
39:59any self-defense claim.
40:01He's going over there
40:02with the intent
40:02to stab him.
40:04And I think
40:04the evidence
40:06would support that.
40:36eight months
40:37after Chris was killed,
40:39his family gathers
40:40to remember him.
40:44We had some good times
40:45with Uncle Chris.
40:46We miss him,
40:47don't we?
40:48Yes, we do.
40:50He was funny,
40:51wasn't he?
40:51Yes.
40:53Chris was just
40:54a real kidder.
40:56He loved to joke.
40:57He loved to laugh.
40:58He worked on his cars.
40:59He kept an immaculate yard.
41:01He was always
41:03meticulous about everything,
41:04whether it was
41:05artwork or decorating.
41:07He always liked
41:08to improve things.
41:11He just had a soft spot,
41:13too.
41:14A soft heart.
41:17And it's just unfortunate,
41:18you know,
41:19that he got hooked up
41:20with Blake.
41:23He just wanted
41:24to use Chris.
41:25Chris was loving.
41:27I think at the beginning,
41:29it was a boyfriend-boyfriend relationship,
41:32but later on,
41:34I think it became,
41:35I'm trying to nurture him.
41:37He came from a bad home,
41:39you know,
41:39and I can make it better
41:41kind of thing,
41:41and I can help him.
41:43And, you know,
41:44he, I mean,
41:45for a long time,
41:46he just took advantage
41:47of my brother.
41:49I mean,
41:49we all worried
41:50Blake would do something.
41:53I kept trying
41:54to get Chris
41:55to kick him out,
41:57and Chris kept telling me,
41:58he says,
41:59he'll heal himself,
42:00and I said,
42:00that's not your problem.
42:02Your problem
42:03is letting him stay there.
42:04You need to get him
42:05out of that house.
42:08I'm sorry,
42:08I couldn't protect him.
42:09I'm sorry,
42:10I couldn't change things
42:12for him.
42:13It's just very sad,
42:16and he didn't deserve,
42:17I mean,
42:18nobody would deserve that,
42:18but my brother
42:19didn't deserve it
42:20from just trying
42:22to help somebody.
42:26I wish we could
42:27turn back time,
42:29but you can't.
42:32I just don't want
42:33him to be forgotten.
42:34I don't want my brother
42:35to be forgotten.
