00:00Except for in here, where I get a few more minutes of air conditioning.
00:03Alright, thanks Bill.
00:04On a typical Saturday, actress Lindsay Lohan might be trying to figure out which parties to attend.
00:08But no partying these days.
00:10As Lohan spends her first weekend in jail, we get the latest from NBC's Kristen Welker.
00:15So what's really happening in that jail and what happens next?
00:18Ann Drew, I know that you've known Lindsay personally for a long time,
00:21at least seven years, and you've even spoken to her during...
00:23We're going to serve the whole sentence.
00:24I mean, and in a sense, sure, it's tough, but she's getting special treatment.
00:28She is an interesting example, because after that, before that, Paris Hilton was the talk of the town.
00:33And she went out and did her big interview afterwards.
00:35And she's really not the talk of the town so much anymore.
00:38Professionally, so that she doesn't become sort of somebody that isn't talked about anymore.
00:42That's for her tell-all. You think that's right?
00:44That could happen.
00:44Drew, thanks so much for coming in on a Saturday, spending some time with us.
00:47Absolutely.
00:48And still to come on today, Inception.
00:51How's that for the insurance claim?
00:53No, really, it was a whale.
00:55Yeah, well, apparently, everyone wants to know how the whale is doing.
00:58No one can know for sure.
00:59It was apparently a teenage whale.
01:01It was a mere 40 tons.
01:02And they think it was okay.
01:03A lot of blubber was on the boat, though.
01:04I thought it was photoshopped for sure.
01:06But to see the video, it actually happened.
01:08Wow.
01:08All right, we'll be right back.
01:09First, the circles under your eyes.
01:11Your body might be trying to alert you to a serious health issue.
01:14Here are some of the surprising signs to watch out for them.
01:16What they could mean is Dr. Carrie Peter, do you appreciate it?
01:18Good morning, Erin.
01:19All right, I was preparing for this, and I went in and started looking at a mirror,
01:21investigating myself from all angles.
01:23Let's start with the eyes, though.
01:25Dark circles.
01:26I've had a lot of help covering those up this morning here in the makeup.
01:28Eyebrows.
01:29If you have issues, sort of.
01:31Right, right.
01:31And this is not just eyebrows, but thinning hair.
01:34Or if you have a lot of people sort of had a cracked corner on the side of their mouth,
01:38which isn't just put on more lip balm.
01:41Right.
01:41And it is inflamed gums in women.
01:44This one was an interesting one.
01:46Yeah.
01:46Maybe one day.
01:47But you could have gingivitis, which is interesting.
01:50Yes.
01:50Okay, let's move to the skin.
01:51Small yellow bumps and bald bumps.
01:53What about butt bumps?
01:55Butt bumps, yeah.
01:56Before we go, all this is going to make a lot of people worry.
01:59They're going to go, oh, I don't have enough hair on my eyebrow or a bump on my butt.
02:02Okay, so how do you avoid just going in and getting too many tests at the doctor and handling this
02:07without us?
02:07And thanks so much.
02:08We appreciate it.
02:09Thanks, Aaron.
02:10All right.
02:10And up next, it's hot, it's humid.
02:12Well, Alan Gonda was one row in front of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.
02:15And what exactly happened?
02:18You heard a noise, right?
02:19And then what did you do?
02:21After I heard the explosion, yes, I was the first one to report the fire.
02:24To the man.
02:25So did he react as he was being severely burned?
02:28Did he say anything?
02:29When you got off the plane, you were coming home.
02:32We should give people just your background.
02:34You're born in Congo, American citizen.
02:36Yes.
02:36Coming home to visit your wife and family and what actually happened.
02:40What did you tell her?
02:41She's seven years old.
02:42What about what you're going to do?
02:43Are you going to go back to where you were consulting in Africa to finish your project?
02:47Are you going to fly again?
02:48Are you nervous?
02:49I mean, looks Arab or because someone's black now that they're going to get special screening?
02:54I hope they don't.
02:55Thanks for coming on and sharing your story.
02:57Glad you're back with your family and your daughters.
03:00Happy New Year.
03:01Thank you so much.
03:02Happy New Year to you too.
03:03Alan Gonda.
03:04And once again, here's Lester.
03:06Legendary photographer Dorothea Lange once said,
03:09Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.
03:13And with that in mind, we asked you, excuse me, I can't clear my throat today.
03:16We asked you to todayshow.com to vote for your most memorable image of 2009.
03:21Well, the votes have been counted and here's a look at your favorites.
03:24And I know moving pictures are the staple of our business, but there's something about
03:28a still photo that just still allows you to really get inside a story in a way that
03:33sometimes moving pictures don't.
03:34It's amazing too, the technology of the new angle.
03:36Yeah.
03:36Although the underwear.
03:39It was a good shot.
03:40That poor guy.
03:40Thank God.
03:41Back now at 8.09 with a look at the year that was.
03:43President Obama was inaugurated.
03:45The King of Pop passed away.
03:47And while Susan Boyle dreamed a dream that came true for other celebrities,
03:512009 was a bit more like a nightmare.
03:54Here with their thoughts, Tina Brown of The Daily Beast.
03:56We appreciate it.
03:57So many things to choose from.
03:59Tina, what do you think was the most important moment of 2000?
04:01Tina, in terms of The Daily Beast, obviously you can see from high brow to low brow,
04:06what people are.
04:07You know, it's only ending a year where everyone's crotch has been on fire.
04:10And I thought I brought this conversation down.
04:13She has talked to you.
04:14Let me take a quick intermission here and just show our montage of a view of the best
04:19of it and we'll get your reaction.
04:20Here we go.
04:23From highs to lows.
04:24You know you didn't show the end of that wedding video.
04:26Those were the things sometimes though.
04:27Thanks so much to all three of you.
04:29We appreciate it.
04:30Tina, Nancy and Andy and Happy New Year.
04:33And up next, when keeping secrets from your spouse.
04:35We have heard so much about Americans get too many tests and sometimes you get a test
04:40and it makes you feel good but it doesn't really do anything for you.
04:43We need a list of what we really need sort of now more than ever.
04:46And get it checked out.
04:47And now what about pap smears?
04:48I know there's been some changes also in recommendations for those.
04:51Right.
04:51The guidelines recently changed.
04:53We used to say everywhere.
04:54But that's an area where maybe just getting tests all the time.
04:57Right.
04:57Not always necessary.
04:58It depends.
04:59Exactly.
04:59With any test there's always a risk.
05:00Now let's talk about skin exams.
05:02You had said about one million Americans are going to be diagnosed with some form of skin
05:06cancer in 2010.
05:07Yeah.
05:08This is unfortunately one of the cancers.
05:09But when you're looking for things, is it still that you're always looking for something
05:11that is shaped abnormally?
05:14Sure.
05:14Or what's kind of a...
05:15Let's talk about the...
05:16Well we said gums to colons is how...
05:19Right.
05:19When Lester was...
05:21Yeah.
05:21We were joking about it.
05:22So let's start with the gums.
05:23Obviously you go to the dentist for teeth cleanings.
05:26You're supposed to at least a couple of times a year.
05:28But that's not enough.
05:29No.
05:29And we're now finding that...
05:30The exam is basically when they measure sort of the distance between the gum and the tooth,
05:34right?
05:34They are.
05:34And they can tell it's go down to the colon.
05:36Sure.
05:36Well I'm a gastroenterologist.
05:37I do this every day.
05:39Yes.
05:39But not least, a test a lot of people may not think of, but particularly for women,
05:44could be very important.
05:45If you're feeling fatigued all the time, for example, it may be due to a thyroid problem.
05:49Thyroid disease.
05:49And again, as we hear about, don't get too many tests.
05:51These are the ones that she thinks are worthwhile for 2010.
05:54We appreciate it.
05:55Thanks, Erin.
05:55And still to come, we'll look back at the year we had and some of the fun you may have
05:59missed.
05:59Erin, good morning.
06:00Good morning, Natalie.
06:01It was mysterious and kind of a strange place to be.
06:03And it took just a short, harrowing flight on an unmarked and old plane.
06:07Iranian planes can't get parts easily due to international sanctions.
06:11But we got to the island just 30 minutes away.
06:13And this island isn't just a vacation destination.
06:15About 15% of Iran's imports now come through there, Natalie.
06:18Even things they're not supposed to get.
06:20You also have smuggling, drug smuggling.
06:22And a former FBI agent, Bob Levinson, actually disappeared there.
06:24It was the last place he'd been seen when he was looking into that.
06:27A good place perhaps to disappear then, right?
06:30Yes, absolutely.
06:30The NBC's Erin Burnett.
06:31It looks fascinating.
06:32Thanks so much.
06:33You go to the strangest places.
06:35But very cool.
06:36Just ahead of Stanton during a live reality.
06:38Friends, but decorating and entertaining often is distracting and there are a lot of injuries.
06:43Dr. Carrie, great to see you.
06:44Good morning, Erin.
06:45So, just at least anecdotally it seems that there's a lot more injuries and health issues
06:51of all sorts during the holidays.
06:52Is that just anecdotal or actually true?
06:54It is true.
06:55I mean, we have so many demands placed on and wounds.
06:57Way more of them this time of year.
06:59There are.
06:59There are 6,000 ER visits a year with cuts and bat.
07:02Because I think we've all sort of sat there mincing garlic or doing something and not watching
07:07where the knife is.
07:08Well, of course your plastic is so thick.
07:10That's the place where you really need to be.
07:11Decorating injuries.
07:12The Christmas tree is the center of a whole lot of wonderful things and problems too.
07:16Let's start with the decorating issues.
07:17So, yes.
07:18Decorating related injuries.
07:20All right.
07:20Now, the other thing about a tree, I was thinking about this the other day, is fires.
07:24A lot of people get your trees early.
07:26The tree dies even though you're putting water.
07:27I mean, is it a real fire hazard?
07:29It is absolutely a hazard.
07:30Just run your hand through the branch.
07:32All right.
07:33What about heart attacks?
07:34This is another tragic thing that there are more of them this time of year than any time
07:39else.
07:40That's right, Erin.
07:41Basically, stress.
07:42No.
07:42And this is a big question everyone has any time of year with a heart attack.
07:45What are the symptoms that would say, okay, I need to go to the hospital because of this
07:48rather than I need to go lie down?
07:50Yes.
07:50That's a key one.
07:51And car accidents.
07:53Yes.
07:53People.
07:54It's snow.
07:55We just saw that pile up, right?
07:56It could be that.
07:57But also alcohol.
07:58Alcohol is really much.
08:00We appreciate it.
08:00Thanks, Erin.
08:01Happy holidays.
08:01A lot of this common sense stuff that we all just need to remember.
08:04And coming up, two families, one.
08:06Well, we're in the final days of our 17th annual toy drive.
08:09And we're grateful to so many generous companies that have helped us get toys to children that
08:13need them.
08:13One of our contributors through the years has been Mary Kay Cosmetics and representing
08:17the company today.
08:18What is Mary Kay's donation?
08:20Well, this year.
08:21Through the years, obviously, you've been generous to so many people.
08:23And Mary Kay is, I know, a big part of the Today Show.
08:26What's your favorites in terms of gifts?
08:27You here.
08:28We're going to take a brief break.
08:29We'll be back with an amazing brunette.
08:31Great to be here.
08:32Along with Tamron Hall.
08:33Good to see you.
08:33And coming up this half hour, a new diet plan that lets you eat what you like and still lose
08:37weight.
08:38Hmm.
08:38Really?
08:40You can't wait for that one.
08:41Then if you're almost done with your shopping and apparently you've got a family of 70.
08:46It adds up to about 70.
08:48It's kind of kind of got two people.
08:50Anyway, except for your favorite pets if they're still easier through the holidays and
08:54beyond.
08:54All right.
08:55Plus, talk about making your life easier.
08:56We all want that.
08:57I'm in trouble.
08:58So we'll save some.
08:59Please.
09:00I will.
09:01All right.
09:01In the meantime, Stephanie, what's the weather?
09:03All right.
09:03So good news here for the Northeast.
09:04Not good news in the West.
09:06Unless you're doing any.
