00:28in the off season spring training right we gotta pitch we gotta play defense we haven't done that
00:33and the reason we are where we at is because of that is that the most frustrating part is the
00:37pitching you haven't had a lot of deep starts you well yeah i mean if if you look at it
00:42um you know
00:43the the four nothing game three nothing game the last two nights right those games with the pitching
00:48staff that we have those games we we got to win and we will win it you know i think
00:52uh suarez is
00:53going to be better bay is going to be better and uh when we have the lead like that um
00:58you know
00:58they're going to go deep into the games and and we're going to win it but so far it hasn't

01:02so when you're manager and you've got a number of little fires that you have to deal with whether
01:07it's uh any base running errors fielding issues hitting in the clutch not going deep into the games
01:12with the starters how do you prioritize which fire you as manager need to attend to first versus
01:18letting your players or coaches deal with them no i think at the end of the day um the name
01:22of the
01:22game is pitching and defense and um obviously we made a commitment that you know it's gonna it's
01:28gonna be uh run prevention you know and and we talk about it and uh you're gonna make mistakes you
01:33just gotta keep working that's the bottom line you know like uh you're gonna go out there take your
01:38grounders talk about situations try to slow it down but we have to make plays and then we have to
01:42make pitches i think uh if you look at the san diego game uh they made a big adjustment uh
01:47the second
01:47time around right uh i think he gave up like four or five hits in the first pitch right he
01:52didn't get
01:52hit hard but he didn't but he made mistakes then late in uh in in that inning to castellanos through
01:58a cutter middle middle hit the double but before that we threw the ball away right it was uh instead
02:03of first and second one out we're one pitch away from getting out of the inning with a ground ball
02:07pitcher well we threw the ball away second and third we walked bogarts on a three two count
02:12castellanos base hit it's four three they're back in the game and then yesterday we walked too many
02:16people the stuff was really good actually uh you know i've seen brian throughout the years a lot of
02:21swing and misses but then all of a sudden we walk in the eighth hitter or the ninth hitter and

02:27they're gonna put the ball in play man that was very brewers like that inning and uh fourth right
02:31they didn't hit the ball out of uh out of the infield they score all those runs and uh we
02:36have to be
02:37better especially with teams like this you pitch to contact they're gonna hit it to you
02:41make plays we got the ground ball too with internal play it cost us so we talk about pitching we

02:47about defense that's that's the reason you know um we pivot kind of like in the offseason and we have
02:53to improve alex a lot of people uh just wondering about leadership on this team and i'm curious if
02:58you've identified the leaders and have you do you go to them do you empower them to i don't know
03:03bring
03:03out more leadership to go talk to guys to to be more vocal is that something that you feel is
03:08important i think in in this sport in this sport is a lot different than in others you know it's

03:14and uh we have leaders in the clubhouse but you got to go through your progression you got to go
03:19through your routines and you got to keep going and leaders will will grow organically you know
03:25and then where we at obviously trevor he's a leader of this team but right now trevor is trying
03:30to find himself right we need him to get going so imagine trevor trying to help roman anthony
03:36or marcello myers and at the same time you got to do your thing so um you know we got
03:41some guys
03:42that are veterans you know ikf is a veteran there he hasn't played that much but he's been in winning
03:47situations before he's helping the kids trevor's doing the same thing the pitching staff we have
03:52a bunch of guys that have been there done that so everybody's trying to help it's not lack of uh
03:56trying you know it's lack of execution and hopefully tonight we can start the winning streak we talked a
04:02lot last year about how impactful and positive fenway park can be friday night fenway that energy
04:07the energy the last few days hasn't been great uh the fans have expressed their displeasure you i'm
04:12sure you heard the chance sell the team chance i think john actually heard them last night what's
04:17your reaction to what's going on in the ballpark while you guys are playing like i said yesterday uh
04:21the beauty of boston is like their expectations are the same as mine it's to win a world series and
04:28they're disappointed you know my family's disappointed you know and uh they don't let
04:32me know that at the house but i bet inside they're like we got to play better you know uh
04:36the first
04:37ones to realize that is us you know so it's on us right now obviously people are gonna you know

04:44what they want to say out there uh but then when the when wilson hit the homer everybody was in

04:49right so we create their energy you know we we have to change the environment we did it last year
04:54we'll do it again but uh right now we're not playing good baseball and uh they're letting us
04:59uh know so was contreras as big mad last night as it appeared in the field or do you think

05:04maybe just possibly thinking like i'm gonna get fired up because i'm gonna get this team going
05:08oh man um he was mad he was and uh you know i think everybody knows the history now with

05:17brewers a lot of games a lot of hit by pitches 24 a guy that he's been hurt before right

05:22you know obviously we were able to slow him down you know i was looking i was like hey big
05:30boy i
05:30need you in the lineup you know you cannot get thrown out but uh he's a very emotional guy you
05:35guys saw it uh you know in the home opener when he hit the homer uh the bad flips and
05:39uh the abs
05:40challenge and he goes to first he's a guy that um you know he cares a lot and now everybody's
05:46frustrated right and uh he didn't like the fact that he got hit again right uh the situation
05:51it was a situation right we have bases loaded uh no outs after that but uh he's a guy that
05:56really cares he's really enjoying this atmosphere although it hasn't been perfect right this is not
06:01the real atmosphere and a guy that um you know i think he's going to help us win a lot

06:05your first significant kind of lineup change taking trevor out of the two hole put him in five and
06:10then yoshida there what what do you what did you think of how that looked last night changing those
06:15guys up i mean masa he's he's healthy he's in a good place uh obviously we got the the five
06:22men
06:22outfield right and uh we have to pick and choose who's going to play when and and how we're going
06:27to do it but uh i think the quality of the at bats are there with trevor kind of like
06:32give him a
06:32breather but like i always said in this game you know uh it's not like in basketball if you're
06:38struggling and offensively right well you play defense and then they don't give you the ball
06:42right like they they hide you this game right away he had men on base you know and and and
06:48you
06:48have to produce and he got a bloop single he got the sack fly he hit the ball hard actually

06:53so just trying to give him a different at bat different perspective instead of like you know
06:59roman doesn't get on and i have to get on right it's more about hopefully there's traffic in front
07:04of him and he can slow it down and i do believe yesterday was a little bit better and uh

07:10can continue today red sox manager alex core here on wei afternoons following up on the trevor story
07:16thing and i know he started slow last year and everybody stood by him and it ended up he might
07:20have been your mvp by the end of the season but you also told us last year marcelo meyer has

07:25future at shortstop is there would there ever be a consideration of flipping those guys i know
07:30trevor's had a couple throwing errors there would there be a consideration to flipping those guys at any
07:35point no we haven't talked about that yet you know or we haven't talked about it i think trevor
07:39you know he goes through his uh slumps like everybody else defensively i think he's at a
07:45rhythm in certain ground balls but besides that he's been able to make plays you know and marcelo
07:50at second he's been solid um yesterday we were talking about that ball to his right when he's playing
07:56pull against a right-handed hitter and the hit ball the other side of the back he's making that play
08:01very easy we haven't had that in a while and he's turned out a play uh it'll be good for
08:06him to kind
08:07of like stay in one position so he can slow it down you know just work at second and then
08:12do your
08:12thing offensively we got to help him there you know because uh he's still a rookie right and uh
08:16there's going to be up and downs but i feel very comfortable with the infield that we have i know
08:20we
08:20have make errors but you know derby has been good yesterday he didn't make the play but he's been
08:25solid at third marcelo at second wilson at first base uh i knew he was athletic i knew he had
08:32a good
08:32season last year with the cardinals but man he he can become a tremendous first baseman good
08:37instincts he's always under the baseball very athletic and uh so far so good so i remember back
08:42in 2019 coming off of the world series championship in 18 slow sluggish start i think you guys finished
08:48with 84 wins and i and i'm paraphrasing here but you said something about the pitching staff coming
08:53you didn't ramp them up quite enough i believe coming out of spring training there was a little bit
08:57people people say that yeah some people say that whoever they were we'll have to find the culprit
09:03but um were you happy with how the pitching staff came out of spring training this year did you feel
09:08like they were ready or is there a reason why maybe some of the guys no no they were ready

09:13that we had not concerns but we were like okay the volume is not where it should be it was

09:20because uh he went to wbc he didn't have too good you know he pitched two games and it wasn't

09:26um if we had the luxury of doing it again and this is something i talked to some of the
09:32managers of
09:32the wbc the next one let's say he goes 30 pitches and he needed to go 50 go to the
09:38bullpen and finish
09:38it you know like yeah finish finish your work for the benefit of the red sox right i like it
09:44looks bad
09:45for venezuela but at the same time it's good for venezuela because the volume got up and then maybe his
09:51next outing is a good one right so that's the only thing you know in in four years whenever it
09:56is you
09:57know and and hopefully we're doing this you know kind of like a this is these are the rules right
10:02like if it's a short outing go finish it and coming into the season that's the reason oviero was in
10:07the
10:08bullpen kind of like to piggyback then that happened he got hurt but uh no excuses i think uh for

10:14it's more about execution than anything else the volume is the volume but we got to throw the
10:18the ball where we want to and he's been on and off uh so far this season i'm wondering alex

10:24you look at the the brewers and the style which with which they play and you think that's the team

10:29want our team to look like that athletic you know small ball uh good defense pitching is that kind of
10:36the team that you kind of are trying to form here good defense good pitching i think that's what they

10:41obviously personal wise that's that's who they are right i bet he would love to have guys to hit the
10:47ball out of ballpark but it works for them uh it starts with turan the leadoff guy you saw hamilton
10:52yesterday he bunt it twice you know and we actually push him to bunt here and uh it didn't happen

10:57but uh they pitch they have a good bullpen they play defense and they do enough you know offensively
11:03that they put pressure on the opposition i think they have like 20 something stolen bases already
11:08you saw them yesterday they were down three nothing they bunt it to get the uh the game closer
11:12because they know they believe their bullpen is that good so we talk a lot about vibes on this
11:17show not just with you guys but the patriots the celtics it seems like it's become chemistry has
11:22become a premium in professional sports and the teams that find it generally are better teams and i
11:27don't know what comes first the winning and the vibes or vice versa uh where is your team at in
11:32that
11:32process is the team that's had the laundry cart now they brought back the wally head i saw it
11:36yesterday you you like that and do you like the um hip uh gyration celebration there's a story behind

12:16uh and then you know they go out for dinners and you know they hang out in the clubhouse
12:21where we at right now is a good learning experience right where we at you know as a team we
12:27still have
12:27is a young team that got off to off the blocks slow right and uh we're learning but we're getting
12:34better i think offensively the last two days the the line was moving we did a lot of good things
12:39obviously the pitching is not to to what we wanted but uh offensively we're getting there i don't want
12:45to be the guy but i kind of feel like i have to ask this question go ahead okay thank

12:55postseason with a 2-7 record flash forward a day later you guys are 2-8 and i believe no

13:23that's that's how it works uh i think last year we were playing 500 baseball going into july and then
13:28we got onto that hot streak you know and i'm always a big believer you know that when you go

13:35your eight win eight game winning streak 10 game winning streak be around 500 right don't be way below
13:41because then you you win 10 you get to 500 and then what right so uh there's two hot streaks

13:48every team hopefully ours you know is when when we get into 500 and then we take off uh garrett

14:37in left field uh roman is uh the agent does is there anything with i know narvaez caught most of
14:42crochet's starts last year and then last week you had the situation that warranted wong is there is
14:47there a comfort level there does crochet get a little freaked out when he doesn't see narvaez how's
14:51that work no no no no he doesn't get freaked out uh it's just where we at schedule wise for

14:57one tomorrow is a lefty we got sunny tomorrow we got the off day so i think it'll be good

15:03wonger there and uh you know he's doing the bad well so there's nothing uh connor is doing a good
15:09job he's a lot better offensive than last year and i feel today was a good day for him that

15:18this whole thing about them just uh upsetting the world you know and uh all of a sudden they're
15:24winning a lot of games they have a good program and uh they've been good for for the last three

15:28four years so when we uh tweeted out the picture and promoting you'd be on at 215 one of the
15:32responses was can you ask him to win tonight so i'm asking oh thank you could you win tonight
15:38i get that pressure hey my boys my boys tell me the same thing every single day so it won't
