00:04:04he's gone
00:04:14for homicide detectives their chance of solving a murder
00:04:18is cut in half if they don't get a lead within the first 48 hours
00:04:42so about approximately an hour ago we had an armed robbery in which the victims were shot at
00:04:48following the robbery and then while working that armed robbery they observe a bullet hole to an
00:04:54unrelated trailer make contact and they discover the deceased in the back bedroom
00:05:01it happened here in front of 12. so here you can see is where we have the entry of the
00:05:11bullet
00:05:12and then on the other side of this wall is our decedent
00:05:17his name is herberto martinez martinez
00:05:2437 year old eriberto martinez martinez came to the us 20 years ago from oaxaca mexico in search of
00:05:31better job opportunities he worked construction and was packed to move to a new job site in north
00:05:36carolina in the morning he leaves behind a large family including his brother and brother's family
00:05:43in north charleston and his parents and three other siblings back home in mexico
00:05:51the bullet struck him in his facial area while he was sleeping the shot killed herriberto instantly
00:05:59where you see the crowd of people is a general area which the armed robbery victims were
00:06:03when the shooting took place they were at the back corner of their trailer when approximately four
00:06:10what they described as black males approached them demanded their items and as they were fleeing
00:06:15the suspect shot there were several shell casings out here that was collected by patrol the four
00:06:22casings were covered or all night millimeter
00:06:28where the armed robbery happened a trailer has video cameras bravo is helping download the video
00:06:36we need to do interviews with the victims once the video is downloaded i'm gonna have him take my
00:06:41victims to city hall and bravo is gonna sit down with each one and we're gonna have one translation of
00:06:47what happened bush and malone are there and i let them know you're coming with three thank you bravo
00:07:03stray bullets are always rough hoping they got a good description in clothing or there's something
00:07:08distinct on one of the individuals that committed the robbery that we can identify and hopefully with
00:07:13that we'll be able to develop a suspect
00:07:25so run me through what happened
00:07:33so they said they were hanging out drinking beer there were four that came somewhere from like
00:07:39behind the trailer they said okay so they're asking like where that where's the mota which means
00:07:45marijuana yep
00:07:51can you describe like what they were wearing what they look like
00:07:57what they look like
00:07:58he says the man who pointed the gun at him wore a black mask and two others also wore masks
00:08:05two black black masks one had one and then one didn't have one at all
00:08:09he said the one that came up to him with the gun he was only able to see kind of
00:08:14like eyes and
00:08:15he had like the mask with the hoodie on all right
00:08:42he pulled the trigger and did you hear it go
00:08:46and nothing and then he starts going through your pockets
00:08:49he says the suspect stole his keys phone and wallet and then moved on to his friend
00:08:56so the guy with the black mask after he took his phone and everything the black mask
00:09:02went to start searching the other victim victim number two but was it the same one
00:09:08that was kind of doing that was kind of doing all the robbing
00:09:22were they like trying to aim at you or were they like aiming at the house
00:09:36he says he and his friends ran after the men but lost them behind some apartments
00:09:42so when they turned left onto facet that's when you lost sight of them
00:09:48okay
00:09:49okay
00:10:00well i'm detective bush detectives speak with the two other robbery victims
00:10:06Can you describe them?
00:10:23Any good descriptions on any of the suspects?
00:10:26No.
00:10:30This is going to be a really tough case.
00:10:32Hopefully, we'll get some good video.
00:10:34It'd be great to get a car coming or going in the area.
00:10:42All right, watch this.
00:10:43Detective Anthony Russ pulls up the surveillance video gathered from the trailer park.
00:10:48So you're going to see the suspects walking up Stahl Road on crosses.
00:10:53The four of them now are linked up.
00:10:55So then we cut to this video, where they're now walking into the mobile home park.
00:11:13Approach the victims from the rear of the trailers.
00:11:18You don't really get to see a whole lot.
00:11:20It's dark and from a distance.
00:11:22You can see they're robbing them.
00:11:25That gun.
00:11:30And they run beside this mobile home that actually has the cameras.
00:11:36And this is the good one.
00:11:40They're running and then shooting back.
00:11:54I was living by going 39 miles per hour on 35.
00:11:58Are you just the most kidding me?
00:12:02Look at me.
00:12:03I'm going to make your bond so high, your head will spontaneously combust.
00:12:09You're not listening, so this is great.
00:12:11You're as great as the trooper is.
00:12:14Court Cam, new episodes.
00:12:16Watch now.
00:12:17Out of crime and investigation, only on A&E.
00:12:21I found something in my son's closet,
00:12:23wrapping up top of the bag.
00:12:25I think it's a human head.
00:12:28Start firing!
00:12:29Get down!
00:12:31I was right there, and he stared at me.
00:12:33He has a gunshot wound to the neck.
00:12:34Gunshot wound to the neck.
00:12:35Go, go, go, go, go.
00:12:37Extreme caution.
00:12:38Don't let him out of your sight.
00:12:40Hands up!
00:12:41If you're in here, make yourself known.
00:12:44Where's he at?
00:12:45Crime in Progress.
00:12:46New episodes.
00:12:47Watch now.
00:12:47Out of crime and investigation, only on A&E.
00:13:01Unfortunately for us, the video surveillance is at night, and they are wearing masks, three
00:13:06of them, so that makes it challenging.
00:13:13But anything distinctive helps us.
00:13:15You can see a camo jacket and some Nikes, and you can form a suspect from that.
00:13:23So, it ends with this, where they're running away in the same direction that they came from.
00:13:32They fled through this area, and then back out this way, likely to this road here.
00:13:41We have some areas of interest we can look for.
00:13:43Video surveillance might help us ID them a little better.
00:13:46There's some apartments here that look good, so we have some things to do.
00:13:53But at least we have a starting point.
00:13:57Video is going to be the key in this case, I think, because we don't have any suspects at this
00:14:00time.
00:14:01We will probably secure for the night here shortly.
00:14:03I'm just, like, prepping this for the next shift and making sure, like, the list of cameras is there,
00:14:10so when they do their brief, they can divvy up and hit the ground running in the morning.
00:14:16This is a completely innocent victim.
00:14:18He was literally sleeping in his bed after a long day's work.
00:14:22I mean, it's horrible.
00:14:23And it also sucks, because right now we don't have any answers.
00:14:27But our goal is to bring justice to the victim and for his family.
00:14:41Let's wake it up. It's Friday.
00:14:44Let's wake it up.
00:14:45Ten hours in.
00:14:47All right, everybody's here. Ready?
00:14:49We are so ready.
00:14:50We're ready.
00:14:51The case is assigned to Corporal Rob Van Tyn, a 20-year veteran with the North Charleston Police Department.
00:14:57All right, so this happened last night.
00:14:59I know the patrol responded at 2150 hours.
00:15:01There was three victims that were robbed.
00:15:05They said that four males robbed them, and then they fire shots backwards.
00:15:10As they're running off, the victim was sleeping in his trailer and got hit by gunfire.
00:15:15They run towards this pond, and that's where you lose them from the camera.
00:15:19I imagine if you're going to take a car, you've got to go out Facet Road on up.
00:15:22You've got to go left on stall or right on stall.
00:15:24We need to see if there's any video that we can obtain.
00:15:27They actually have good video on the second building in that apartment complex.
00:15:32Also, Sergeant Bailey was saying somebody ran.
00:15:35They found a broken fence.
00:15:39So it could have been him jumping the fence into the apartment complex.
00:15:43There's a good chance to really just look at the apartments.
00:15:46I agree.
00:15:46I think the main thing right now is just getting as much footage from the surrounding area as possible
00:15:50and see what we got, whether it's vehicle leaving or they're staying on foot and running.
00:15:55If I can do that apartment complex, y'all said they have cameras there?
00:15:58Yeah, get all the cameras there from the external if we can.
00:16:00We got you, Banzon.
00:16:04So I came in this morning and noticed the night shift call-out team responded to this,
00:16:10where it gets passed on to the next person in the rotation.
00:16:12I like being on scene, being the one who responds to it.
00:16:15Unfortunately, this one I'm not, so I have to review the notes that they did and then go from there.
00:16:19I just wish we had more information to go off of right now.
00:16:22There's nothing to connect the victims to the suspects.
00:16:24We don't have a car.
00:16:25We don't have anything yet.
00:16:26So it's really a whodunit.
00:16:28So we'll see if the cameras and the footage, we can develop some more leads.
00:16:40Back here in this corner is where they put a pallet over a fence,
00:16:43and you can see footprints where they've been climbing over a fence.
00:16:56There's no video.
00:16:57The security cameras at the apartment complex aren't working.
00:17:02That's the ring camera on ***.
00:17:05But the team will canvas each apartment for doorbell cameras.
00:17:09So *** gives them a lot of problems.
00:17:13According to someone in the building,
00:17:15there have been complaints about two young men on the second floor.
00:17:19One of the males was sitting in this Kia yesterday.
00:17:23It's stolen out of city.
00:17:24The ignitions popped.
00:17:27You think they could be our bad guys?
00:17:29Dogs track back here.
00:17:31It's a possibility, yeah.
00:17:35I had a still shot of the suspects from our surveillance camera for the shooting.
00:17:40He picked out two from the four individuals.
00:17:43Detective David Pritchard showed the video image to the tipster.
00:17:47He said that he thinks the two in the middle are the two sons that live at this apartment.
00:17:52They might be our guys.
00:17:55We're going to do a knock and talk for reference to that stolen car.
00:17:58See if it has anything to do with our homicide.
00:18:17Detectives bring out a woman and her two teenage sons.
00:18:20I came up here and knocked on the door.
00:18:27They opened the door and breached the marijuana.
00:18:29So I pulled everybody for investigative detention.
00:18:32Now we're going to get a search warrant type for the residence for anything related to the incident.
00:18:37What are we doing?
00:18:40Hey, listen to what they see and calm down.
00:18:45I'm their mom.
00:18:46Maybe these kids were involved in the incident.
00:18:48We'll see.
00:19:00I wonder if there's a way we can downplay it and say, some items were stolen.
00:19:05Let's get those items back.
00:19:06Maybe they'd be more forthcoming.
00:19:10How you doing, man?
00:19:12Could be better.
00:19:12Vantine starts with the older brother.
00:19:15Is that your apartment over there?
00:19:17Yeah, my sister.
00:19:19Your sister's?
00:19:20How long have you been there?
00:19:23We just recently moved there.
00:19:25So they came, they smelled marijuana, whatever.
00:19:27Is there anything else in there?
00:19:28Is there any?
00:19:28Because I know they're going to go in there and look.
00:19:30Is there any weapons or anything like that?
00:19:32Like, is there like a gun or something where they're found?
00:19:34Mm-hmm.
00:19:35Like, I don't know if it's a weed.
00:19:37Weed?
00:19:37Any other substances or anything?
00:19:39Mm-hmm.
00:19:40I got you.
00:19:41Okay.
00:19:41No, basically, be honest with me.
00:19:44Did you take any items from some people in trouble that we could somehow get back to them?
00:19:57I found something in my son's closet wrapping up off the bag.
00:20:02I think it's a human head.
00:20:04Start fire.
00:20:05Start fire.
00:20:06Good job.
00:20:07I was right there, and he stared at me.
00:20:10He has a gunshot wound to the neck.
00:20:11Gunshot wound to the neck.
00:20:12Go, go, go, go, go.
00:20:13Extreme caution.
00:20:15Don't let him out of your sight.
00:20:16Hands up.
00:20:18If you're in here, make yourself known.
00:20:21Where's he at?
00:20:21Crime in Progress.
00:20:23New episodes.
00:20:23Watch now.
00:20:24Part of Crime and Investigation.
00:20:25Only on A&E.
00:20:34I don't know.
00:20:35I take a dime.
00:20:36Did someone else take some items that you were with?
00:20:40No.
00:20:46Because you know what happens is when we go through, we pull surveillance video everywhere, right?
00:20:51The trailer park and all that.
00:20:52Mm-hmm.
00:20:53So there's cameras on facet.
00:20:54There's cameras further down.
00:20:56So I just don't want you caught in a lie with that, okay?
00:21:00So I'm asking you to honestly, be honest.
00:21:03If you were at that trailer park, you were at home the whole time?
00:21:12Yeah.
00:21:13And if it shows that you weren't in the house and you actually left, what then?
00:21:18Yeah, you can show me later.
00:21:20Okay.
00:21:30Hey, how's y'all, man?
00:21:31Vantine turns to the younger brother.
00:21:34Now, I'm going to be honest with you.
00:21:35Some items were taken from some people at a trailer park further down the road.
00:21:42Did you go over to that trailer park?
00:21:48So you stayed there the entire time?
00:21:51As a man, that's your word.
00:21:55Okay.
00:21:57I'll be right back.
00:22:05So I can't say 100% that they're involved.
00:22:07I just know that right now you have the path leading to their apartment.
00:22:14You have a man that's saying from the still images that two of them look like kids that
00:22:18belong to that apartment.
00:22:19And the fact that I feel just from interviewing that they're lying about last night kind of
00:22:26leads me to believe they're involved, but we'll see.
00:22:29Search warrant's going to be completed.
00:22:31Maybe there's a weapon in there.
00:22:32You never know.
00:22:33Cam is still talking to the mother.
00:22:36Maybe we'll get more information from her.
00:22:42So, I'm going to be honest with you.
00:22:44So, there was an incident that happened across the street at the trailer park on Stahl.
00:22:49Some Hispanics were robbed.
00:22:51And in the process, there were some individuals that shot at a trailer.
00:22:55And we arrived on Stahl and found a male deceased who was sleeping in this trailer.
00:23:02Those subjects then ran towards the apartments of where y'all are staying.
00:23:07And one of your sons were in the Kia just sitting there.
00:23:11And there had been a number of Kias stolen from the area.
00:23:15Do you know any reason why either one of your sons would be inside that Kia?
00:23:19They shouldn't be.
00:23:20Listen, I work from Stahl and I'm going to look at that neighbor that night.
00:23:24Yes, ma'am.
00:23:26I really see my kids sometimes.
00:23:29I work in Brimble's I got a goal to accomplish.
00:23:32I don't want this for them.
00:23:33I want better.
00:23:36Now, I can tell you, I'm not going to lie for my kids.
00:23:39But they've been home yesterday.
00:23:41Now, if they've done broke in that car, then they've got to deal with the consequences.
00:23:47There's no reason for them to have to do anything like this.
00:23:51Because I give them what they want.
00:23:53We're just following our leads and going upon our investigation.
00:23:57Have you ever seen either one of your sons carrying a firearm before?
00:24:01I'm against God.
00:24:02I don't like them.
00:24:04You know, that's just, I feel like, what you need a gun for.
00:24:08But at no point in time yesterday you recall your sons leaving.
00:24:13No, they didn't leave.
00:24:14All right.
00:24:15Just give me a second, all right?
00:24:16All right.
00:24:20They're saying they're the whole, the entire time.
00:24:22Yeah, that's what she's saying.
00:24:24I feel like she would tell me otherwise.
00:24:26I honestly do believe as much as she was telling them to calm down on scene, like, be respectful.
00:24:34I feel like she would tell us if they weren't in the house.
00:24:38Did she ask him anything about the car?
00:24:40The Kia.
00:24:42One of them were in the Kia.
00:24:44I didn't ask him.
00:24:46I'll ask the other one.
00:24:49Hey, quick question, too.
00:24:50Um, there's a Kia that's parked out there.
00:24:52Um, were you inside that vehicle at all?
00:24:54What about your brother?
00:24:56Any of y'all inside that vehicle?
00:24:58Mm-hmm.
00:24:59Do you know who that, that vehicle belongs to?
00:25:01No.
00:25:02Do you know where it came from?
00:25:04Mm-hmm.
00:25:07All right.
00:25:13You don't know whose car is it.
00:25:15Same answer from the other guy.
00:25:18They don't know anything about the car, and they're not in it.
00:25:21Those people put you in it.
00:25:23I think they're lying about that.
00:25:25Whether they're involved in this murder, I do not know.
00:25:27Um, but we'll find out once we get the search warrant, we get more information from pulling the video cameras.
00:25:32At least we've locked them into statements.
00:25:34That's the important thing.
00:25:34We've locked them into statements, so we can either validate those statements, or we can disprove them at this point.
00:25:39So we'll see what happens.
00:25:45Then.
00:25:46Hold on a second.
00:25:47Detective Pritchard calls in from the apartment complex.
00:25:50Well, we got video from before the shooting that shows those kids leaving this apartment.
00:25:54About what time?
00:25:562141, it looks like.
00:25:582141, eh.
00:25:59The video shows three men leaving the complex 10 minutes before the call to 911.
00:26:05Just check your email or your, uh, text.
00:26:07Yeah, I got it coming through.
00:26:13That's their building.
00:26:15Mm-hmm.
00:26:17Holy .
00:26:20It's absolutely hell, man.
00:26:23Yeah, what's up?
00:26:27It's just a great time.
00:26:46Bye-bye.
00:26:48I've got one more silver dollar, but I'm not going to let them catch me, no, I'm going to let
00:26:57them catch the midnight rabbit.
00:27:07It was literally probably going 39 miles per hour on 35.
00:27:11Are you just looking at this thing, man?
00:27:15Look at me.
00:27:16I'm going to make your bond so high, your head will spontaneously combust.
00:27:22You're not listening, so this is great.
00:27:24You're as great as the trooper is.
00:27:27Court Cam, new episodes, watch now.
00:27:30Part of Crime and Investigation, only on A&E.
00:27:41100% that's them.
00:27:43The shoes, the camo jacket.
00:27:50Where are they coming from?
00:27:52You can't see no one's face.
00:27:57Does it have them coming back?
00:27:58Do we have a video of them coming back after you?
00:28:01I haven't seen one.
00:28:02Put this on the big screen of the computer just so we can kind of get a better look at
00:28:07them.
00:28:11Here they are coming down, six to ten minutes before the murder.
00:28:14The doorbell video is from an apartment below the brothers.
00:28:19We don't have them coming out of the actual apartment.
00:28:22We have them coming down the stairs.
00:28:24I need the shoes, sir.
00:28:26That's all I do.
00:28:26That's all I do.
00:28:29That's all I do.
00:28:30That's all I do.
00:28:31That's all I do.
00:28:31That's all I do.
00:28:32That's all I do.
00:28:42I'm in order to identify them.
00:28:43You ready?
00:28:46Hey.
00:28:47How's it going?
00:28:48I'm Detective Banton.
00:28:52Who's who?
00:29:04I don't know who's got green and white shoes.
00:29:08Nobody in my house.
00:29:10I'll show you something real quick.
00:29:12This is the video.
00:29:13Detective Cam Miller shows her the surveillance video from the crime scene.
00:29:18Oh, I don't know.
00:29:20Listen to me for a second.
00:29:21And I get it.
00:29:22You're their mom.
00:29:22You're supposed to protect them.
00:29:23Well, and I wouldn't lie for them, either.
00:29:26Because right is right and wrong is wrong.
00:29:28And I'm going to be honest.
00:29:30I don't know who this is.
00:29:32I don't know.
00:29:34I do not know.
00:29:35I'm telling you.
00:29:37These green and white shoes, I never saw before.
00:29:40OK.
00:29:54She's denying, basically, knowing anybody.
00:29:56I would bet money they're involved.
00:29:58But we'll see.
00:29:58But we'll see.
00:29:59You have to get more.
00:30:03Then.
00:30:04Perfect.
00:30:05The team searching the brothers' apartment reaches out.
00:30:09So they found 9-millimeter handguns in there.
00:30:12And there are 9-millimeter blazers.
00:30:14They recovered two stolen guns and ammunition that's the same brand as the casings found at
00:30:20the crime scene.
00:30:21So I think we're on the right track here.
00:30:22That's good news.
00:30:24That would tie that apartment definitively.
00:30:27We'll test fire them here.
00:30:29And one of those weapons will hopefully match.
00:30:32So I'll confront them on it.
00:30:38Hey, how's it going, man?
00:30:43So a couple of 9 millimeters were found in your house.
00:30:48I've got the cameras.
00:30:50I've got video of you leaving.
00:30:53I want to know, yesterday night, who was with you when you went over to the trailers?
00:31:02Where'd the guns come from that were inside your apartment?
00:31:08Hmm?
00:31:12Your cousins?
00:31:14Was your cousin with you last night?
00:31:17No, he was with me yesterday.
00:31:19But not last night?
00:31:22So he wasn't involved?
00:31:26So all I've got right now is you and your brother.
00:31:28That's a problem for you and your brother.
00:31:31I need you to come clean with me.
00:31:33If there's a third person.
00:31:36Or if you're the one who up, then say you up.
00:31:40And don't drag the other two down.
00:31:45Which one's you?
00:32:09He says he recognizes the men in the video from another apartment.
00:32:39The original ring camera footage that was sent to me.
00:32:42He's got even more.
00:32:44The owner of the doorbell camera sends additional video clips.
00:32:55He comes and picks up laundry at 10 o'clock.
00:32:59Mm-hmm.
00:33:00The video confirms the younger brother was at home at the time of the murder.
00:33:08Hmm.
00:33:10Okay, so he's ruled out completely.
00:33:14They're gonna test fire the gun.
00:33:15And right now, eyeballing it, they think it doesn't match.
00:33:18That's what we're getting at.
00:33:20The casings from the crime scene do not appear to have been fired from the recovered weapons.
00:33:29These aren't the guys.
00:33:32It's someone else that just happened to come from the apartments where they are.
00:33:42Which part was he saying?
00:33:45I think he said the one next door and the one right to the left.
00:33:48I guess the people.
00:33:53Obviously, if you smell anything, let everybody get out and we'll retain everybody, like we did the first time.
00:34:05You ready?
00:34:05Can you come on here?
00:34:06I'll get you out of here.
00:34:10That's just bad luck.
00:34:12It was looking like these were gonna be our guys.
00:34:16Sometimes you get it wrong, but you just don't know until you question them and try to get to the
00:34:19truth of the matter.
00:34:20They did have stolen guns and a stolen vehicle in their possession, so they are involved with criminal activity.
00:34:27Just not what we're investigating right now.
00:34:29We let them go.
00:34:30We can always charge them later if we want to.
00:34:32No rush on it right now.
00:34:33I mean, I'm frustrated that it didn't turn out.
00:34:36But the positive side is where that apartment is, the upstairs, these are our guys.
00:34:41So at least we have these three are 100%.
00:34:45So now it's just a matter of if we can identify them.
00:34:48And this one is the one that fired the shots on camera.
00:34:52So nice to figure out who he is.
00:34:54If we identify all four of these subjects, all four will be charged with murder.
00:34:59Hand of one, hand of all.
00:35:04All right.
00:35:05All бюдж K demais, exactly the same trick option!
00:35:13Orange eyes eyes to the police!
00:35:15your heart!
00:35:23Nobody comes to the door.
00:35:25Problem has been wild enough to hit it.
00:35:29I have a male wearing a camouflage hoodie.
00:35:32Who's in and out that apartment?
00:35:33Miller recovers more doorbell video from an apartment across from the potential suspects.
00:35:39Oh, hold on.
00:35:40That might be our guy.
00:35:42This one of the suspects had a camo jacket on.
00:35:45He's got a camo jacket.
00:35:48She's here.
00:35:48He wears it all.
00:35:51I think we want to go.
00:35:55I think we have enough video to maybe do a facial rec.
00:35:58We're on the right track.
00:35:59We got some stuff to go off of.
00:36:01We just kind of follow up on it.
00:36:10Later that night.
00:36:11So I have these pictures that we got from this ring camera that's across the hall.
00:36:16So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take that picture and put it into Verkata and see
00:36:20what pops up.
00:36:23Our Verkata cameras are a city asset camera that we pay for to install.
00:36:27Two years ago, the city of North Charleston added over 700 surveillance cameras across the city to help reduce crime
00:36:34and improve police response time.
00:36:36They record things at major intersections.
00:36:38We can see everything from shootings to robberies to collisions to petty larcenies.
00:36:44They're extremely used for one of the best tools we have.
00:36:46The facial recognition software for Verkata is a very new feature they just added.
00:36:51It'll show up a bunch of different pictures who could possibly look like who I'm looking for.
00:36:56Okay, so I just put these into Verkata.
00:36:59What do you think, Malone?
00:37:01Come take a look at this real quick.
00:37:03This guy pops up right here with that exact same camo jacket.
00:37:09This was earlier that day, Thursday, April 25th.
00:37:14That's possibly one of the suspects right there.
00:37:26I found something in my son's closet wrapping up top of the bag.
00:37:31I think it's a human head.
00:37:33Start fire!
00:37:34Start fire!
00:37:35Get down!
00:37:36I was right there, and he stared at me.
00:37:39He has a gunshot wound to the neck.
00:37:40Gunshot wound to the neck.
00:37:41Go, go, go, go, go, go.
00:37:42Extreme caution.
00:37:44Don't let him out of your sight.
00:37:45Hands up!
00:37:47If you're in here, make yourself known.
00:37:50Where's he at?
00:37:50Crime in Progress.
00:37:52New episodes.
00:37:52Watch now.
00:37:53Part of Crime and Investigation.
00:37:54Only on A&E.
00:38:04That looks like the guy from the ring camera video of his camo jacket right here.
00:38:10So we're seeing a potential suspect wearing similar clothes the same day as the shooting.
00:38:19He's walking alongside another male who's wearing similar clothes to what one of the other shooters is wearing.
00:38:26This dude looks like this dude right here.
00:38:29And then this guy right here with the long black shirt, the dark pants and the black shoes looks like
00:38:35this guy right here.
00:38:37I think that could be two of our guys right there.
00:38:41This varicata camera is located in our East Montague area.
00:38:46There is a school just down the street.
00:38:48Maybe somebody at the school would recognize those two.
00:38:50And then we're going to send these images up to SLED.
00:38:53That's our South Carolina law enforcement division.
00:38:56They have a lot of resources that we don't have.
00:38:58Hopefully, we can at least get the ID of two of the suspects out of the four.
00:39:10The next afternoon.
00:39:16This is apartment 13.
00:39:18And this is a guy that associates there.
00:39:25I heard back from Reeves.
00:39:27He talked to the school resource officer.
00:39:29We have identified him as Tristan Robertson.
00:39:33He's the one in the camel jacket.
00:39:37In his DMV photo, he's also wearing a Cambo jacket.
00:39:4219-year-old Tristan Robertson, a former student at North Charleston High School, has no prior convictions.
00:39:50Now, look who he's walking with.
00:39:51The body build of this guy.
00:39:54Doesn't that look very similar to this person?
00:39:57The South Carolina law enforcement division ran the photo in their database and got a hit.
00:40:04Facial rag, he identified him as Kobe Bryant.
00:40:08He was convicted of strong-arm robbery.
00:40:10He also got convicted for failure to stop for blue lights, so he's known to run.
00:40:14After serving 10 months in jail for larceny and receiving stolen goods, 22-year-old Kobe Bryant was released six
00:40:22months ago.
00:40:25I think this is Tristan.
00:40:27I don't know who this is.
00:40:28I think this is Kobe.
00:40:30So we're going to do, like, a workup on them, see if they're on probation, what their phone number is,
00:40:37all that.
00:40:37I hope we can get these guys in custody, because once we catch at least one of them, they'll hopefully
00:40:42snitch on the others.
00:40:50As the clock winds down...
00:40:52I'm Detective Vantine.
00:40:53I'm assigned to the case for both the robbery and the homicide.
00:40:57Vantine meets with Eriberto's family and the three robbery victims.
00:41:01When we came in on Thursday, we had no idea who did this.
00:41:05Friday, we ended up pulling video from the area and got a description of possible suspects.
00:41:11Now, today, we've got possible names, and we're trying to piece that together.
00:41:16So we were actually a lot closer than we were.
00:41:20Sometimes these investigations take time.
00:41:22Let them know the second we make an arrest, the second we make an arrest, they are the first people
00:41:27we will call and let them know.
00:41:29Please, we would really appreciate that.
00:41:31Oh, definitely.
00:41:32We're working hard.
00:41:32Trust me.
00:41:33We are doing our best we can.
00:41:34So, this is important, Detective, that they don't understand.
00:41:37Es importante que tienen...
00:41:38Esto se toma tiempo.
00:41:40This takes time.
00:41:41Yeah.
00:41:42Ellos están trabajando on-gone, okay?
00:41:45Pero yo sé...
00:41:47Aquí tiene la mejor policía de toda esta área.
00:41:50The best police department there is, no Charleston, period.
00:41:54They're the best.
00:41:55You don't worry about that.
00:41:56Solo let them work, right?
00:41:58And work with the situation, but they need time.
00:42:01It's going to be okay.
00:42:02Okay.
00:42:03Estamos.
00:42:18In the first 48, North Charleston detectives responded to the murder of Heriberto Martinez Martinez, killed in his sleep by
00:42:26a stray bullet during a robbery.
00:42:28Spoke to the robbery victims, who said four men fled the scene, firing as they ran.
00:42:34Discovered video surveillance that tracked three of the men to an apartment complex near the crime scene.
00:42:39Identified two of the possible suspects as Tristan Robertson and Kobe Bryant.
00:42:44But all four suspects are still at large.
00:42:56Two days later.
00:42:57One of our guys that I think we've identified in the photo, Kobe Bryant, is going to meet with his
00:43:04P.O.
00:43:05Detectives head out to meet with Kobe's parole officers, hoping to question Kobe.
00:43:10We just want to talk to him, see if he will identify himself, and also see if his P.O.
00:43:14will identify him from that photo that we have.
00:43:25Thank you so much for meeting with us.
00:43:28I'm Detective Vanton.
00:43:29Nice to meet you.
00:43:30Same here.
00:43:31We'll show you a photo.
00:43:33Yep, that looks like him.
00:43:36That definitely had to tell us Kobe.
00:43:38That's Kobe?
00:43:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:43:41Is he pretty cooperative?
00:43:42Would he talk with us?
00:43:43I think so, because believe it or not, he doesn't want to go back to jail.
00:43:46Helps us.
00:43:47Like, we'll try our best to help him.
00:43:50Let's text him.
00:43:50You said 10 minutes.
00:43:51Okay.
00:43:53Thank you, guys.
00:43:54Yeah.
00:43:56Well, that's a good sign.
00:43:57She's pretty much thinking that's him.
00:43:59And it's just a matter of getting him to just say, that's me.
00:44:03And once he admits that, we have him.
00:44:06And all we have to do at that point is see if he'll give up the other names.
00:44:16Hello?
00:44:17Hello?
00:44:17Hey, he's got on the purple.
00:44:19He's a big fan.
00:44:20He's pulling around.
00:44:21He's going to pay you from there, shouldn't he?
00:44:23Yeah, I see him.
00:44:24I see him.
00:44:25You see him?
00:44:25Yes, ma'am.
00:44:30I'm going to go hot.
00:44:31Come on.
00:44:36Kobe spots the detectives and takes off.
00:44:40Woo!
00:45:04Can I have an EMS to the Lonnie Hamilton building?
00:45:08Myself and a suspect, we fell after a brief foot chase.
00:45:16He just took off running.
00:45:18I caught him on the other side of the parking lot.
00:45:23We just wanted to talk to him, so it makes it look a little weird
00:45:26that he just takes off running as soon as we get out of the car.
00:45:33Kobe Bryant's parole officer approaches Miller.
00:45:42Okay.
00:45:43What's up, man?
00:45:45Did you change your car?
00:45:48Inside the car is the other person of interest, Tristan Robertson.
00:45:53That's on.
00:45:54It's Tristan in the backseat.
00:45:56Hey, go to that backseat and retain that.
00:46:05All right.
00:46:07You got anything in here?
00:46:08What the ?
00:46:10He's good.
00:46:11He's gonna go sit at the hospital.
00:46:14We'll take him to the technical aid right now.
00:46:16While Kobe is taken to the hospital for evaluation, Tristan is detained for questioning.
00:46:21We got Tristan and Kobe.
00:46:23Tristan was in the backseat to work out.
00:46:26Hopefully, he'll talk to us, though, because they're not happy right now.
00:46:36That's Tristan Robertson.
00:46:38I'm gonna go in and try to interview him, see if he'll admit that he's in the photos.
00:46:43What do y'all need?
00:46:44A few kind words, some support.
00:46:46You got this.
00:46:47You want a chest bump?
00:46:48You want me to punch you in the chest?
00:46:51Okay.
00:46:56Hey, man, you need any water or anything?
00:46:57You sure?
00:47:01Okay, I'll try to get you home as quick as I can.
00:47:04Obviously, you saw what happened out there, right?
00:47:06Running and all that.
00:47:10I know.
00:47:11That's awesome, dude.
00:47:12How old are you, man?
00:47:1319.
00:47:1419?
00:47:15What grade did you complete in school?
00:47:1711.
00:47:17You got your GED or anything?
00:47:19No.
00:47:19I got you.
00:47:20You go and work on that?
00:47:21Yeah, that's what I'm trying to work on now.
00:47:22Sweet.
00:47:23What do you do for a living, though?
00:47:24I work at Emily Oil.
00:47:25Oh, okay.
00:47:26I got you.
00:47:28No, basically, I just want to talk to you about some things.
00:47:30I want to show you some pictures.
00:47:32That's it.
00:47:33I don't know why he did what he did, but we'll talk to him as well.
00:47:37I want to show a picture.
00:47:41This is off of, like, Jenkins Avenue.
00:47:43This is April 25th, which is a Thursday.
00:47:46Ventine shows Tristan the photo from city cameras taken six hours before the homicide.
00:47:55Do you have a camouflage jacket like that?
00:47:57No.
00:47:58I used to when I was...
00:48:00That was back in 2021.
00:48:02Does that help me?
00:48:04I don't know.
00:48:05That's not me.
00:48:08I was with my granny Thursday and Friday.
00:48:11Where's your granny house?
00:48:13West Ashby.
00:48:13The reason is because...
00:48:15So, there was an incident that happened on Thursday night.
00:48:19Where?
00:48:20Around Midland Park and Stahl.
00:48:23I think you were with some people that messed up...
00:48:25Yes.
00:48:26I'm asking you, trying to treat you as a witness here.
00:48:30That's not me, though.
00:48:32I'm telling you, that's not me.
00:48:33Where I was at, you can call my daddy and my grandma.
00:48:36So, you stayed in West Ashby the entire time on Friday?
00:48:39I got you.
00:48:41Ventine shows him another photo taken by a city camera the day after the shooting.
00:48:49So, you're saying that ain't you?
00:48:51That looked like North Charleston.
00:48:53Yeah, that's North Charleston.
00:48:54But you're saying you and West Ashby on this date?
00:49:04You're saying, like, the pictures are completely wrong?
00:49:06Like, we can...
00:49:06I don't know.
00:49:07Like, how is there a picture of you in an area that you're claiming you're not?
00:49:11We have cameras all over the city.
00:49:13We have cameras all over Stahl Road.
00:49:14We have cameras all over the facet.
00:49:16You see what I'm saying?
00:49:17I was not on Stahl Road.
00:49:20I don't know what you're talking about, what happened on Stahl Road.
00:49:23I was not on Stahl Road.
00:49:25You can just get me a leg.
00:49:27I don't know what it's going at.
00:49:29Okay.
00:49:32I'll be back.
00:49:33I told you where I was at, so...
00:49:34You sit tight.
00:49:45He's just denying everything.
00:49:47He didn't know what to say after you shouldn't have left.
00:49:49No.
00:49:50He said, that's not me, and then lured up.
00:49:53Like, he literally said he's in West Ashley.
00:49:55He never left West Ashley.
00:50:02A few minutes later...
00:50:04Hi, Diane.
00:50:04...Coby arrives at headquarters.
00:50:06I decided to be able to talk to you in just a second.
00:50:08We'll get Detective Butler to try to talk to him.
00:50:10Maybe it'd be better that someone who wasn't on scene when he ran and ran after him would be probably
00:50:15better.
00:50:16He's requested to speak to Sergeant Mike Brown, who used to mentor him when he was a younger kid.
00:50:22The detective Coby requested is currently working for the chief of police.
00:50:27So I'm gonna get in contact with him to see if he'd be willing to come down and speak to
00:50:30Coby.
00:50:31The murder's at 9.50 p.m.?
00:50:33Yeah.
00:50:33This is at 3.50 on the day of the murder.
00:50:36You get him to identify himself, that's gonna be Coby, and that's gonna be Tristan.
00:50:41Tiff found this picture on Coby's Facebook, and those shoes are the green Nike.
00:50:49The Facebook photo of Coby was posted four months ago.
00:50:54His shoes match.
00:50:55If you watch the actual video, the shoes match from his picture there.
00:51:12Butler shows him a photo from a city camera on the day of the shooting.
00:51:17I don't know who that is.
00:51:20No idea who that is?
00:51:21No.
00:51:25But you know what happened Thursday?
00:51:27No, I don't know what happened Thursday.
00:51:30Let me ask you a question.
00:51:31Do you have some white and teal or bluish high-top Nike or whatever?
00:51:37No.
00:51:37You know what I'm talking about?
00:51:38No.
00:51:38It's on your Facebook page.
00:51:44Hey, man.
00:51:52You know how we roll, right?
00:51:54Yes, sir.
00:51:55You have those shoes, right?
00:51:56No.
00:51:57I don't know.
00:51:58Did you give those shoes for somebody?
00:52:00No.
00:52:00No shoes was given to me, but I didn't give them.
00:52:03I left them at a friend's house.
00:52:04When?
00:52:05Long time.
00:52:07Okay.
00:52:08All right.
00:52:08I think I'll talk to you for a minute.
00:52:13Listen, man.
00:52:14How long have we known each other?
00:52:16Long time.
00:52:16Long time.
00:52:18I know your family.
00:52:20All right?
00:52:22I know you.
00:52:24And that may be the case, but they don't have you up here for no reason.
00:52:28I've been doing this for a long time.
00:52:30I'm telling you 100%, everything that they're asking you, they know the answers to for the
00:52:36most part.
00:52:36They're not just asking you for no reason.
00:52:39This is your opportunity to help yourself out as best you can.
00:52:44There's only one thing I need from you.
00:52:46What's that?
00:52:47I need for you to at least tell me the truth.
00:53:08Kobe, listen to me.
00:53:09I don't want to see you throw your life away, dude.
00:53:12Me neither.
00:53:13I just come home.
00:53:14It's time to get my life back together.
00:53:17Right.
00:53:18And I don't want to see anything happen to you.
00:53:20But if you're not telling the truth, you know what's going to happen.
00:53:24But I had nothing to do with this situation.
00:53:26I had nothing to do with it.
00:53:27I don't even know what's going on.
00:53:30I'm not saying that you did anything, that you shot somebody.
00:53:35But I know you might be a witness to it.
00:53:37Witness to a murder?
00:53:40I ain't no nothing about no murder, no nothing.
00:53:43I didn't know it was something that happened on Star Room last week.
00:53:46I saw it on Facebook.
00:53:49So what happened?
00:53:50I don't know.
00:53:50They said somebody being robbed or something
00:53:52that they get into armed robbery with you.
00:53:54I guess one person died of some .
00:53:56I don't know nothing about the .
00:53:57I'd be in my cow house.
00:53:59I'd be at vert.
00:54:00And I'd be home.
00:54:01Other than that, I don't be nowhere else.
00:54:05You know there's a difference between being a suspect and a witness, right?
00:54:11What's the difference?
00:54:12I ain't no suspect.
00:54:13I'm an innocent bystander.
00:54:15Right.
00:54:15And what's a witness?
00:54:16Someone that has knowledge of me.
00:54:18I don't got knowledge of .
00:54:19Right.
00:54:20So there's two different things.
00:54:22Yes.
00:54:22I guess I don't have to be real.
00:54:23I don't have knowledge of what happened Thursday night.
00:54:25And I was not a suspect of what happened Thursday night.
00:54:28I got you.
00:54:29Right?
00:54:30I understand what you're saying.
00:54:32That's what you're trying to say.
00:54:33I'm trying to understand what's going on.
00:54:36I wasn't there.
00:54:38And if I was there, I'd have told you I wasn't there.
00:54:40But I wasn't there.
00:54:43What if there's something that shows different?
00:54:45If something shows different, then I ain't me.
00:54:48I ain't me.
00:54:50I don't want to be anywhere else.
00:54:53All right.
00:54:54It's Sergeant Bailey.
00:54:56What's up, ma'am?
00:54:56Yes, sir.
00:54:58Sir, I know you've been in here talking to Sergeant Brown.
00:55:01Because I've been listening.
00:55:02He's not lying to you when he tells you that we have a lot more than what you think we
00:55:06have.
00:55:07I want to lay some stuff down on the table for you, all right?
00:55:11Because we've been investigating this thing since it happened last Thursday night.
00:55:15All right.
00:55:17So you know that the city has thousands of cameras around it.
00:55:21I pray she'll live.
00:55:23Yeah.
00:55:23Let's just make this real easy, okay?
00:55:26Who is that?
00:55:30Me.
00:55:31Okay.
00:55:32I'm not trying to trick you.
00:55:33All right.
00:55:33What's the time frame on that?
00:55:35427.
00:55:3730.
00:55:37All right.
00:55:38Okay.
00:55:38This is East Montague.
00:55:40I'm trying to jog your memory.
00:55:42All right.
00:55:42Same area.
00:55:43Same day.
00:55:47Who's that?
00:55:48Bailey shows him a photo of Tristan.
00:55:50Why?
00:55:51What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:52What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:54What the f*** my lawyer?
00:55:56What the f*** my lawyer at?
00:55:59I don't know who that is.
00:56:01You don't know who that is?
00:56:02I met him today.
00:56:04I never.
00:56:05I met him today.
00:56:06I'm going to lose at it.
00:56:11You met him today?
00:56:12Yes.
00:56:13Kobe, you don't lie to the man at all.
00:56:15Look at me.
00:56:16You met him the day when you went to this man on Thursday.
00:56:19It's not a trick question.
00:56:21Thursday, all right, Thursday.
00:56:22Like I said, I was trying to see my field.
00:56:25Somehow, he was there.
00:56:30OK.
00:56:31You have to understand what I'm trying to tell you.
00:56:33You're in a situation?
00:56:35All right, I know I'm in this situation.
00:56:37Yeah, I want you to understand how bad this situation is.
00:56:39That's not a situation.
00:56:39It ain't got nothing to do with me.
00:56:40And I've got your PO telling me when they watch your video,
00:56:43this person right here?
00:56:48That dude right there.
00:56:50Supposed to be me, huh?
00:56:52So he's saying that, isn't he?
00:56:55If you're with Tristan.
00:56:57All these bitches are going to tell y'all got me in this
00:56:59finding nothing wrong with this
00:57:04So you're meeting next year?
00:57:05No, that's me, all right.
00:57:07That's me, that's me, and that's me.
00:57:09This is what it ain't me.
00:57:11I got a black hat on in these bitches.
00:57:13Where the green hat comes from?
00:57:14I don't know.
00:57:14Exactly.
00:57:15The thing I'm trying to let you know
00:57:16is all these guys right here,
00:57:19people from this apartment complex,
00:57:21which is less than 300 yards away
00:57:23from where the incident location happened,
00:57:25wearing the same blue...
00:57:26I don't got no green hat.
00:57:28All my hat like that on is blue.
00:57:29I don't care what you got.
00:57:30I don't know what you're at.
00:57:31What's wrong with the sickle?
00:57:32I have not seen any of this.
00:57:33All right, over here.
00:57:34You share with Sergeant Bailey
00:57:36more than you share with me,
00:57:37and I know you.
00:57:38All right, but could...
00:57:39Kobe, I know you.
00:57:40That make me feel.
00:57:42But you didn't tell me about any of this.
00:57:44I didn't know he has none of this.
00:57:45I'm not going to ask you.
00:57:47I'm not going to ask you.
00:57:48I'm going to speak to my lawyer.
00:57:50All right, I'm going to speak to my lawyer, bro.
00:57:52I'm going to speak to my lawyer, bro.
00:57:54I'm leaving.
00:57:54He's staying as your friend.
00:57:55I'm leaving.
00:57:56I don't got no friends, bro.
00:57:57I don't got no friends, bro.
00:57:58I'm going to speak to my lawyer.
00:58:00I understand.
00:58:01But Kobe, listen to what I'm telling you.
00:58:04Turn around, man.
00:58:04Let's talk.
00:58:05Turn around.
00:58:06Let's talk.
00:58:07That's disrespectful to turn your back on me.
00:58:09You're right, man.
00:58:09Y'all ain't getting me down,
00:58:10saying I was a mom and an armed robbery
00:58:12or some shit.
00:58:12I'm not talking about that no more.
00:58:14All right.
00:58:15I'm here for you.
00:58:17I think this is the best detective unit
00:58:19in the state, probably in the world.
00:58:22They're great at what they do.
00:58:24They'll find the truth.
00:58:25I guarantee you that.
00:58:26They'll find it, but I wouldn't do it.
00:58:28They'll find the truth.
00:58:29Yeah.
00:58:30I'm always around, so call me
00:58:32if you need to talk to me about this.
00:58:34All right.
00:58:40He loaded up, so there's no way to get him.
00:58:42Oh, yeah, he loaded up.
00:58:43He was being faced with too much music.
00:58:45But I did leave him with, I'll be here.
00:58:49I think just have somebody call me.
00:58:50We'll talk it out.
00:58:52When I got the call that he was down here,
00:58:55I had to get prepared to put the Big Brother coat on.
00:58:58Sergeant Mike Brown first met Kobe several years ago
00:59:01as a school resource officer.
00:59:03I played football with his uncle in high school,
00:59:06and he walked up to me and like,
00:59:08hey, you know my family.
00:59:09And so we formed a pretty good rapport,
00:59:11good relationship,
00:59:12and I always kept that door open with him,
00:59:15like, hey, man, if you need something,
00:59:17I'm there for you.
00:59:18But in this case, it's different.
00:59:20I mean, it's a murder,
00:59:21so it's kind of hard to break that barrier right now.
00:59:25Probation officer called just now.
00:59:28Yeah.
00:59:30Kobe's mom called her.
00:59:32She found credit cards and debit cards
00:59:33with Hispanic names in Christian's room.
00:59:37According to the parole officer,
00:59:39the cards were found in a bedroom
00:59:41shared by Kobe's two younger brothers.
00:59:44Kobe's got a brother named Christian
00:59:46and a brother named Jameson.
00:59:52Christian Bryant?
00:59:5420-year-old Christian Bryant
00:59:55has no prior convictions.
01:00:00This is Jameson Bryant.
01:00:0218-year-old Jameson Bryant
01:00:04also has no prior convictions.
01:00:06The thing is, is we have four suspects,
01:00:09so it could be all them and Tristan.
01:00:16That's what I'm thinking.
01:00:17It's going to be him,
01:00:19his two brothers probably and Tristan.
01:00:21That witness approach may be failing with him
01:00:23because he knows it's his brother
01:00:25to be the shooter.
01:00:27hell.
01:00:29Let's go.
01:00:30We got to get a search warrant going.
01:00:31We need to get someone over there
01:00:33to get those.
01:00:34Give Tiffany the phone number
01:00:36because Tiffany's going to go with Gina
01:00:39and Cockrell.
01:00:42That's her apartment.
01:00:43That's her contact number.
01:00:45Okay.
01:00:47Really, if we can get the names on the cards
01:00:49and then we'll still do a search warrant.
01:00:51I hope they come back to our victims.
01:00:54I think these are our guys.
01:00:56What the
01:01:01if the credit card comes back
01:01:03to one of the victims that was robbed,
01:01:05that would seal the deal.
01:01:14Hello?
01:01:15Yeah.
01:01:15I'm going to put you on speaker.
01:01:23I'm going to repeat that.
01:01:25Caitlin just got a call back
01:01:26from the armed robbery victim.
01:01:28He confirmed that that bank card is his.
01:01:34Thank you so much.
01:01:35That's awesome.
01:01:36That's great news.
01:01:38Bye.
01:01:39Kofor's son fled the residence
01:01:41and she doesn't know where they are.
01:01:44According to their mother,
01:01:45Christian and Jameson left home
01:01:47after hearing Kobe was detained
01:01:49and won't return her calls.
01:01:51Kobe is staying with his girlfriend,
01:01:53which is in Goose Creek.
01:01:55That means the clothing's probably
01:01:57in her house in Goose Creek.
01:01:59The team will get warrants
01:02:00to search Kobe's girlfriend's house
01:02:02and his mother's house
01:02:03for additional evidence.
01:02:05It's his two brothers.
01:02:06That's why he can't.
01:02:08That's why he won't play
01:02:09because he can't ride on his brothers.
01:02:11I think with the credit card
01:02:13being found now
01:02:14that belonging to the victim,
01:02:15I think obviously murder charge on him
01:02:17and they're taking...
01:02:18I think he can go murder on him.
01:02:19I'm going to go murder on him
01:02:20because he's with him
01:02:21before and after.
01:02:23What the f*** is going on?
01:02:26What the f*** is going on?
01:02:34I don't like the way this thing's going.
01:02:37Mouchan, should I go in jail?
01:02:40All right, where are you going in jail for?
01:02:41They just told me
01:02:42they found some stuff
01:02:43at your mama's household
01:02:45and that's not cool.
01:02:47Like, that ain't cool
01:02:47because I'm sure your mama
01:02:49ain't have nothing to do.
01:02:50Mama, she don't
01:02:51and I don't live in jail.
01:02:53So who has access to your mom's house
01:02:55besides you and your brothers?
01:02:56They don't.
01:02:57And my mama?
01:03:01So which one of them
01:03:02might be involved in this?
01:03:19I don't know which one of them
01:03:20would have avoided it.
01:03:21I don't know.
01:03:21I get it.
01:03:22I understand.
01:03:24It's tough.
01:03:28I can't put your fingers like that.
01:03:29I can't take nothing but nothing.
01:03:33Put the charges on.
01:03:35They're probably going to charge you
01:03:36with murder.
01:03:37If I charge you with murder, f***.
01:03:40I don't know f***ing murder, man.
01:03:42Don't put your mom through this, bro.
01:03:44Don't do it.
01:03:46You've got to be responsible
01:03:47for anything that you've done
01:03:49or anything that you have knowledge of.
01:03:52Really?
01:03:53I don't know f***.
01:03:54I don't know f***.
01:03:55I don't know f***.
01:04:00All right.
01:04:03If you know I'm talking to me,
01:04:04you know where I'm at.
01:04:05You know how to get in contact with me.
01:04:06Say anything I told you before.
01:04:10He's not coming off of me.
01:04:11I was going to tell on a brother,
01:04:13you know, so
01:04:14I understand,
01:04:15but
01:04:16is what it is.
01:04:20It sounds like his brothers are involved.
01:04:24Some of the things may be at his mother's house.
01:04:26It's a sad situation, but it never has to happen this way.
01:04:30We all have choices.
01:04:31I told him if he wants to talk to us,
01:04:33he knows how to get in touch with me.
01:04:37All right, we're going to transport you to jail.
01:04:39What am I telling you?
01:04:40Murder?
01:04:41Murder?
01:04:41Yeah, murder.
01:04:42Me?
01:04:43Yeah, you.
01:04:43How the f***?
01:04:44I ain't getting murdered.
01:04:46Boy, that's stupid.
01:04:48That's not me, bro.
01:04:49Wrong person.
01:04:50Ain't no f***ing murder.
01:04:51Boy, you're being charged with murder.
01:04:52That's a f***ing down, bro.
01:04:53That's a f***ing down.
01:04:54Stupid as a bitch.
01:04:55I'm going to get to the jail, so.
01:04:56I have a f***.
01:04:57I have a f***.
01:04:57I have a f***.
01:04:58I have a f***.
01:04:59I have a f***.
01:05:02I'm taking that s*** all the way to trial.
01:05:04I'm calling.
01:05:06It's been a good day.
01:05:07We actually got two suspects in custody for murder.
01:05:10So out of the three suspects, that's Tristan Robertson, and that's Kobe Bryant.
01:05:17This person we do not know, and he's the shooter.
01:05:20There's actually a fourth suspect that's not pictured here that shows up with them.
01:05:24I believe it's going to be his brothers.
01:05:26It's just now proving it.
01:05:37The next day.
01:05:41You want some water or something?
01:05:43No, I'm okay.
01:05:46This is Kobe's mom.
01:05:48Kobe's probation officer wrote me in an email this morning saying that Kobe's mom wanted to talk to us.
01:05:53She wants to provide additional information because she thinks that her other son is involved with the homicide.
01:06:02Breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.
01:06:06Hello, man.
01:06:07Detective Bantai.
01:06:08Nice to meet you.
01:06:10I got here.
01:06:11Two sons that live with you are Christian with a K?
01:06:16Yes.
01:06:17And the other one is Jameson?
01:06:18Yes.
01:06:19Where are they now?
01:06:20I have no clue.
01:06:21I have no clue.
01:06:24When did Kobe move out?
01:06:26Kobe was gone for about a month, and I found out what I found out yesterday.
01:06:30What did you find out?
01:06:31Well, what I heard from Kobe's PO is that at first he was being detained, and he was supposed to
01:06:36be a person of interest to the robbery.
01:06:40And I was like, what?
01:06:42Like that?
01:06:42You know, I'm shocked.
01:06:44So she was just filling me in what's going on, and she said it was a Mexican person that died.
01:06:52I was like, what?
01:06:52I was like, it's funny.
01:06:54When she said that, I was like, well, I found a Mexican check in my house Friday.
01:06:59Yes.
01:06:59When I went inside their room, it was sitting on the floor.
01:07:02So I picked it up, and I looked at it.
01:07:04I'm like, I know for sure there's nobody in my household.
01:07:07So when Christian got back, I was like, well, whose check is this?
01:07:10Oh, I found it on the ground.
01:07:12I said, well, why would you be stupid to pick it up and bring it home?
01:07:15Yes.
01:07:15Just get rid of it.
01:07:17He said he tore it out, and he threw it away.
01:07:24I said, well, let me just let her know what's going on.
01:07:29You know what I'm saying?
01:07:30Yeah, yeah.
01:07:31Yeah.
01:07:31I really appreciate it.
01:07:34I know it's hard.
01:07:35Pull forward.
01:07:36I could do a time like this.
01:07:39Tristan?
01:07:40I don't know who Tristan is.
01:07:41We got him.
01:07:43This definitely looks like him.
01:07:46That looks like him.
01:07:48And look at that one, too.
01:07:50Oh, yeah.
01:07:51That's definitely Jake.
01:07:53Which one is?
01:07:54That's definitely Jake.
01:07:59She IDs the suspected shooter as her 18-year-old son, Jameson.
01:08:06Do you think Christian would be with him?
01:08:08Do you think he'd be one of the guys running in the video?
01:08:14I'm not sure.
01:08:17All right, I can call him if you need me, too.
01:08:19Yeah, you can ask him.
01:08:21No, I'm going to just be scared of what's him,
01:08:23because, I mean, I don't have the time to shake a chord or something.
01:08:26It ain't.
01:08:29I'm going to ask you honestly.
01:08:31You got something to do with this Robert Rutherford?
01:08:34Yeah, I do.
01:08:35I've been in like the man wasn't involved.
01:08:38How do you mean you've been with them?
01:08:40I ain't right, but the man wasn't involved.
01:08:41So you've been in when the Robert Rutherford played, too,
01:08:44because the surveillance touches I'm looking at.
01:08:46I expect all three of them look like y'all.
01:08:48Jameson been in, too?
01:08:51I need you to answer my question.
01:08:53Was Jameson with y'all?
01:08:55I knew what y'all did.
01:08:57When I found them checks and I asked you about them checks,
01:08:59why y'all did what y'all did?
01:09:01Y'all, you know somebody did?
01:09:03You're not involved with it.
01:09:05You're not involved with it,
01:09:06but you've been there with the robbery was going on?
01:09:09You don't want to speak on the phone,
01:09:11so would you like to come in and talk question right now
01:09:12because this is serious matter, too, y'all.
01:09:18If you only did nothing, then why are you running?
01:09:23I ain't the person that you...
01:09:26He said Jameson was with him?
01:09:28Yes.
01:09:29He said of course.
01:09:30Oh, is that what he said?
01:09:31I couldn't hear.
01:09:31Yeah.
01:09:32So that's all three of my kids and...
01:09:34And the other one.
01:09:35Yeah.
01:09:36So I don't know what else to do.
01:09:37No, you've done a lot.
01:09:38I appreciate you calling him and all that.
01:09:41And if you can convince him to come and meet with us
01:09:43at some point, not now, I mean, just, you know...
01:09:46No, he needs to come now.
01:09:47He knows that's why he hung up.
01:09:51I appreciate it.
01:09:53No problem.
01:09:54I think that's about it.
01:09:55I know we have your number.
01:09:57As far as a victim,
01:09:58I know I'm probably not allowed to reach out to them
01:10:01because they are my kids, you know what I'm saying,
01:10:03but can I express my sympathy?
01:10:05You know, I do just apologize for it.
01:10:07I can't take it back, but you know,
01:10:08it's just not right at the end of the day.
01:10:11Oh, gosh.
01:10:12They make their own choices.
01:10:15Okay?
01:10:16Don't put that on you.
01:10:19Yeah, of course he can't come back.
01:10:22Then it wasn't because of choices you made.
01:10:26I'm fine.
01:10:27I'm not here today.
01:10:28Okay.
01:10:29I'm trying to focus.
01:10:30Okay.
01:10:30That's it.
01:10:31I'll reach out to see what I can do.
01:10:33I'll let you know.
01:10:34I didn't go from there.
01:10:35It's fine.
01:10:37No problem.
01:10:41She is so cooperative.
01:10:42An amazingly wonderful, cooperative mother.
01:10:45And all three of her kids are involved.
01:10:47I feel horrible for her.
01:10:49She identified one in the middle,
01:10:51saying that looks like Jameson,
01:10:52and then she called Christian on the phone,
01:10:55and he said he was there,
01:10:56and Jameson was there for the robbery.
01:11:03They're in the wind,
01:11:04and she's going to try to call them
01:11:06and try to get them to come in.
01:11:08That made the case right there,
01:11:09helping us to bring justice to this family
01:11:13quicker than it would have been
01:11:14if she hadn't come in
01:11:15and gave us that information.
01:11:17She was upset,
01:11:18but she said that she wanted to appear in court
01:11:21just so she can see the victims
01:11:23and tell them how sorry she is
01:11:25that her sons did this.
01:11:28Our two outstanding defendants,
01:11:31I will send the warrants over
01:11:33to our marshal's task force,
01:11:34and they will start tracking them
01:11:35so we can locate them
01:11:36and safely effect an arrest on them.
01:11:49Eight days later...
01:11:50So it's going to be this brick house right here.
01:11:55The marshals track Christian and Jameson
01:11:57to a relative's house in Glen Terrace.
01:12:01We're surrounding the house,
01:12:02and we're going to try to get them out peacefully.
01:12:04But swat on standby just in case.
01:12:34Negotiations are in progress right now,
01:12:35and we're standing by.
01:12:38We know they're armed,
01:12:39we know they're dangerous,
01:12:40so we just want to take all precautions
01:12:42to make sure the citizens nearby don't get hurt,
01:12:44nor any officers, nor them.
01:12:49Ready.
01:12:51As the team approaches the house,
01:12:56the brothers flee off the back.
01:13:2120-year-old Christian Bryant is taken into custody.
01:13:28You good?
01:13:28You good?
01:13:29I'm not supposed to kill my cell.
01:13:32But the suspected shooter,
01:13:34Jameson Bryant,
01:13:35is nowhere to be found.
01:13:37The SWAT did not locate him in the house.
01:13:39He slipped out.
01:13:40It's still a win.
01:13:41It's still a win in the book.
01:13:43Three down, one to go.
01:13:52Christian.
01:13:53Right?
01:13:53Bryant?
01:13:55I know you know what you're out here in reference to.
01:13:58I want to get your side of the story of what happened.
01:14:00All I can say is I don't want to lose no switch.
01:14:02I don't say no games.
01:14:03Listen, I've known a child for a long time.
01:14:05I get it.
01:14:05Accidents happen,
01:14:06bad s*** happens all the f***ing time.
01:14:08It's hard to f***ing talk about
01:14:10because it's s***ing.
01:14:12But you can't get over the facts of the case.
01:14:14Right, right.
01:14:15We have video of the incident.
01:14:17We have video of the apartment.
01:14:18The facts are what they are.
01:14:20This is your chance to tell me what happened.
01:14:25We walked over to the trailer park.
01:14:28It was like,
01:14:28come on, let's go for a walk.
01:14:29I was like,
01:14:30I'll walk.
01:14:30I'm like,
01:14:31oh,
01:14:31we got the car.
01:14:32We can just drive.
01:14:33It was like,
01:14:33it was right around the corner.
01:14:34So I was like,
01:14:34s*** it,
01:14:35let's go.
01:14:36So what happened?
01:14:37How did it go down?
01:14:40I guess
01:14:42they saw a couple of guys
01:14:43and then went,
01:14:44everything just happened too fast for me.
01:14:45So I was in the back
01:14:46with no clue,
01:14:47just going along with s***.
01:14:48And once everything happened,
01:14:50I guess I run with them.
01:14:51Okay.
01:14:52How many people have firearms
01:14:53with you?
01:14:54The only one that I know of.
01:14:57Okay.
01:14:57And is that Jameson?
01:15:03Okay.
01:15:04So,
01:15:07so you did not have
01:15:08a firearm.
01:15:10Did Kobe have a firearm?
01:15:12Not that I'm aware of,
01:15:13no.
01:15:13Did Tristan have a firearm?
01:15:14Yeah,
01:15:14I'm sure no.
01:15:15So I'll say this,
01:15:16all evidence is pointing to Jameson
01:15:17as the one that had the gun.
01:15:18I'm not saying that you,
01:15:20that you're saying that,
01:15:21but all evidence is showing me that.
01:15:23Right.
01:15:24And when are the shots fired?
01:15:26Uh,
01:15:27I guess when we were leaving
01:15:28and I heard,
01:15:29oh,
01:15:29someone was chasing us.
01:15:31I never looked back.
01:15:31I didn't know that it was the gunfire
01:15:33on the side of my head.
01:15:35So you're fleeing
01:15:36and you hear gunshots
01:15:37as y'all are running away.
01:15:42You know bullets
01:15:43don't have names, right?
01:15:44Exactly.
01:15:45I understand you did not shoot,
01:15:47but yeah,
01:15:48bullets don't have names.
01:15:50Let me ask you something.
01:15:51Why you may come
01:15:52in here prior to.
01:15:54Once they had murder,
01:15:55I was like,
01:15:55I don't think I must have
01:15:57trust me,
01:15:57so I'm going down here.
01:16:01All right.
01:16:02So we may have to go ahead
01:16:03and just get you transported
01:16:04over to County.
01:16:05Okay?
01:16:11He confirmed
01:16:12that his brother Jameson
01:16:13is the one that had the gun
01:16:15and basically told us
01:16:16a story of what happened
01:16:18and it matches up
01:16:20exactly with the scene
01:16:21and what the victim said
01:16:22happened.
01:16:24So it really helps.
01:16:26It really turns the case
01:16:27from a circumstantial case
01:16:28to a really strong case.
01:16:31All right.
01:16:33Christian,
01:16:34you can stand it up.
01:16:35You are being charged
01:16:36with murder.
01:16:40No, you're not doing it.
01:16:41Christian.
01:16:44How old are you, bro?
01:16:4620, right?
01:16:47Look at me.
01:16:49Don't.
01:16:51No, you're not.
01:16:52No, I'm not.
01:16:53I'll be soon
01:16:54talking to you.
01:16:55Okay, well,
01:16:57you had a fool
01:16:58like the head of you.
01:16:59Oh,
01:17:00yeah, you do.
01:17:02It's not a life sentence.
01:17:05He definitely has
01:17:06some remorse.
01:17:07He's said several times,
01:17:08like,
01:17:10he's going to kill himself
01:17:11when he gets to jail
01:17:12because his life is over.
01:17:14So, like, with that,
01:17:15we'll let the jail know
01:17:16and he'll be on suicide watch.
01:17:18You can see that he
01:17:19does understand
01:17:22the foolishness,
01:17:23for lack of a better term,
01:17:24of what they did.
01:17:27The next step would be,
01:17:28obviously,
01:17:29get Jameson in custody
01:17:30and, ideally,
01:17:31would get a confession
01:17:33from him as well.
01:17:44Six weeks later,
01:17:45the marshals got him.
01:17:47They zeroed in
01:17:47on the location
01:17:48in Greenville
01:17:49and then got him.
01:17:50Jameson Bryant,
01:17:52he is the fourth suspect
01:17:53I'd believe
01:17:53to be the shooter.
01:17:55They caught him
01:17:55in Greenville,
01:17:56South Carolina.
01:17:57It's about a three-hour
01:17:57drive away from here.
01:18:01That's a good song.
01:18:05Have a seat.
01:18:06You need some water?
01:18:08Yeah.
01:18:08Sweet tea?
01:18:09A little bit of a sweet tea.
01:18:11We have a bunch of fries, though.
01:18:12You know, French fries?
01:18:13Yeah, I think some of them.
01:18:14French fries?
01:18:15All right.
01:18:15Some water, please.
01:18:16Appreciate them.
01:18:26Come on, man.
01:18:27This town,
01:18:29you say anything
01:18:30or anything?
01:18:31I mean,
01:18:31I didn't ask him
01:18:32a whole lot
01:18:32because I didn't want
01:18:33to get going.
01:18:34He knows,
01:18:34the marshals told him
01:18:35what his charges were,
01:18:36so he knows his murder.
01:18:38And he'd come out
01:18:38of the cell
01:18:39in Greenville singing
01:18:41and rapping.
01:18:42I told him
01:18:43we were coming back
01:18:43and he'd talk to me.
01:18:44He's like, okay.
01:18:45All right.
01:18:46Let me go in there.
01:18:50It's pretty cold-hearted.
01:18:51Put the gun to his head
01:18:52and hold the trigger
01:18:53and then go off.
01:18:54Yeah.
01:18:56Frickin' Reese's.
01:18:58Can I talk to you
01:18:59about an incident
01:19:00that happened
01:19:01on the 25th of April?
01:19:04Basically,
01:19:04we know what happened.
01:19:05I'm just trying
01:19:05to get your side
01:19:06of the story.
01:19:06And mainly,
01:19:07the question is,
01:19:08were you just there
01:19:09or did you actually
01:19:10fire any shots?
01:19:12That's all
01:19:12what I really want to know.
01:19:14You've been there at all.
01:19:17See,
01:19:17that's the problem.
01:19:18I'm telling you,
01:19:19you were there.
01:19:23What I want to know is,
01:19:25were you just there?
01:19:27With these guys
01:19:28and a shot was fired,
01:19:29was it intentional
01:19:30or an accident?
01:19:41What happens
01:19:42when you're
01:19:43in the trailer park?
01:19:44What happens
01:19:45from your point of view?
01:20:01Who started running?
01:20:03The three you're with?
01:20:05What are you hearing?
01:20:06Tell me what's going on.
01:20:08I hear somebody
01:20:09start screaming.
01:20:11Someone in your group
01:20:12start screaming?
01:20:13Uh-uh, somebody else.
01:20:14I don't even know who.
01:20:15I haven't really
01:20:16fully aware
01:20:16what the f***
01:20:17been going on.
01:20:20Everybody just been
01:20:21in one line
01:20:21when we were running.
01:20:22And then when we hear,
01:20:24well, all I heard
01:20:24was gunshots.
01:20:25I know where you come from.
01:20:27I know none of us
01:20:28is showing up for him.
01:20:34None of y'all
01:20:35are discharging
01:20:35a firearm, right?
01:20:36Uh-oh.
01:20:37But these are you,
01:20:38you, right?
01:20:39Right.
01:20:41These are you
01:20:42going in the park
01:20:43and these are your group
01:20:44running out, right?
01:20:45Correct?
01:20:46I got you.
01:20:48Look, the next image
01:20:51is your group
01:20:52firing gunshots.
01:20:54I ain't showing you.
01:20:55And the reason being,
01:20:56you've been lying
01:20:57this entire time right now.
01:20:58I'm not going
01:20:59to play this game.
01:21:00This b***h,
01:21:00like I heard a scream,
01:21:01someone else is shooting.
01:21:02The camera don't lie.
01:21:03The shots are being
01:21:04fired from your group.
01:21:06Now, I don't know
01:21:07if you're being chased,
01:21:08if it's justified.
01:21:08I don't know anything
01:21:09like that.
01:21:10You can only tell that story.
01:21:14Straight up.
01:21:20I'm giving you
01:21:21an opportunity,
01:21:22to be honest.
01:21:24I know that you were there.
01:21:26I know you were there
01:21:26with this group of guys.
01:21:28I know shots were fired
01:21:29from your group.
01:21:30This is your freaking life.
01:21:32So this is your chance,
01:21:33and I want you to be honest.
01:21:36Can you do that?
01:21:41I got you.
01:21:50What is all this?
01:21:53Sock-tastrophe.
01:21:55Finding out the party
01:21:55has a shoes-off policy.
01:21:58Smirnoff Extraordinary.
01:22:00Getting the world's
01:22:00number one vodka
01:22:01at a price worth sharing.
01:22:02We do Smirnoff Extraordinary.
01:22:13We don't.
01:22:14We go on the street
01:22:15to the Star Road.
01:22:16Okay.
01:22:17To the...
01:22:19What you call them?
01:22:20Trailer Park.
01:22:21Yeah.
01:22:33I don't know if you feel me,
01:22:49because...
01:22:50I don't know if you feel me,
01:22:51my attention.
01:22:52Well, your group is the one
01:22:53that's shooting the shots,
01:22:54correct?
01:22:54Not them.
01:22:55I don't know.
01:22:57So...
01:22:58Straight up.
01:22:59Look...
01:22:59I'm being honest, bro.
01:23:00All right.
01:23:02I'm going to be honest with you.
01:23:04The video,
01:23:05you let off the shots.
01:23:07100%,
01:23:08I know that.
01:23:09It's you.
01:23:09That's not a debate.
01:23:11I just want to know,
01:23:12did you intend to hit anybody?
01:23:15No.
01:23:16So was this an accident?
01:23:19So what happened?
01:23:20Why did you fire the shots then?
01:23:25It went off?
01:23:28So it went off one time,
01:23:30two times?
01:23:31How many times?
01:23:31Huh?
01:23:32Two times.
01:23:32Two times.
01:23:34So it was an accident
01:23:36when you stumbled
01:23:36and you fired twice.
01:23:39Why'd you fire the other two shots?
01:23:42Yeah, there's two more.
01:23:47You stumbled and fired twice.
01:23:48Why'd you fire the other two shots?
01:23:51Yeah, it took a year
01:23:52to get the shit out of me.
01:23:54So I just...
01:23:56I ran.
01:23:59Ain't no way to shoot an airport.
01:24:01You don't remember that vividly.
01:24:02You know one of your bullets?
01:24:03Do you know where it went?
01:24:05No.
01:24:06It went through a trailer.
01:24:08And there was a Mexican guy
01:24:10sleeping in a bed.
01:24:11It went through his head.
01:24:13Damn.
01:24:15So your bullet
01:24:17killed somebody.
01:24:29Good job.
01:24:31What did you do with the gun?
01:24:36You gave it to a junkie?
01:24:37Yeah, you gave it
01:24:38about like $200 back.
01:24:43All right, let me step out
01:24:44for a moment.
01:24:44We'll be right back, all right?
01:24:49There you go.
01:24:50Yeah, it went well.
01:24:52I think realizing
01:24:53that it wasn't a debate,
01:24:54that I had a lot of evidence,
01:24:56he knew he had something on him.
01:24:57So he might as well
01:24:58just tell his story.
01:24:59He's the shooter.
01:25:00All four of them
01:25:00were going to rob these guys.
01:25:03And during the course
01:25:04of the robbery,
01:25:05he fired shots,
01:25:06which ended up killing
01:25:07an innocent person.
01:25:08Those actions led to
01:25:10him being charged
01:25:11with murder
01:25:12and the other three
01:25:13members of the group
01:25:14being charged with murder
01:25:15instead of just armed robbery.
01:25:16and the other three.
01:25:21I mean, there was
01:25:22kind of a way
01:25:23here for the first
01:25:24for you.
01:25:29Loser!
01:25:29All right, let's go.
01:25:31All right.
01:26:08This was an act that should have never happened,
01:26:10and now one mother has three of her sons in jail for murder,
01:26:15and the other mother has her son gone forever.
01:26:19But I'm thankful that the mother of the suspect
01:26:21stepped forward and did the right thing.
01:26:23That's unique, and I'm thankful,
01:26:26and I know the family must be thankful towards her
01:26:29for stepping up and doing that,
01:26:31even at the cost of her kids.
01:26:58This photo was when he arrived here,
01:27:02to South Carolina.
01:27:22He loved being an uncle, and my kids
01:27:25were never without a candy or a lollipop or something,
01:27:29because Uncle Bochuk bought it.
01:27:32He was a great guy.
01:27:34Anything we needed, he was always willing to help.
01:27:38Yes, well, like I said, I told him that he did a lot of work,
01:27:43he made a lot of work to the person who met him and
01:27:47he said, I think, I have no words.
01:27:53Do you have a lot of words?
01:27:56Are you always the same thing?
01:27:57Every day.
01:27:59We're sad.
01:28:02We're losing a lot of work.
01:28:06We're losing a lot of work.
01:28:06We're losing a lot of work.
01:28:08of a human being, a man who was sleeping at his house,
01:28:14and that's what I do most.
01:28:16The truth is, I don't know what to say,
01:28:20but I feel trapped.
01:28:22I feel completely hurt.
01:28:31He was my friend.
01:28:35And, well, he left.
01:28:40I understand that we have to go ahead.
01:28:47We love him a lot.
01:28:50We always talk about him.
01:28:53Always the good stuff.
01:28:56Keep his memory alive.
