00:00Welcome back to New Rockstars, I'm Jessica Clemons and this week was the release of Super Mario Galaxy, the movie,
00:05and let me tell ya, movies like these are big, big in easter eggs and this detail, so of course
00:09we had to leap into action.
00:10This movie's making such deep cuts for all the fans from designs of specific levels to the music, even down
00:15to the sound effects, so let's get down to it.
00:17Let's-a-go, some would say.
00:19Well, I wouldn't because I'm a Birdo fan and I guess she's a goon in this movie.
00:22But first, before we get into it, make sure to check out the latest and greatest in New Rockstars merch
00:27over at nerdriot.shop.

00:39Alright, let's get into this breakdown. It's gonna be kinda long and kinda, you know, a lot.
00:43This video was sponsored by Yamaha Resort and Casino. We'll tell you more about them later on.
00:48We officially opened the movie with Nintendo's little production logo, which is just like the last movie, but this time
00:52they're celebrating their 40th anniversary.
00:54Unlike the first movie that begins on the snowy plains of the Snow Kingdom, we begin this movie in space.
00:59We're on our way to Rosalina. Rosalina's home is at the Comet Observatory, serving as the central point for study,
01:04navigation, and system oversight within the galaxy.
01:06Built by Rosalina, it travels through space with her Lumas.
01:09The Comet Observatory also comes from the Super Mario Galaxy games, where it still acts as the home to both
01:14the Lumas and Rosalina.
01:15In the games at the Comet Observatory, there's actually six domes that give you access to all the galaxies.
01:19It's the Terrace Dome, Fountain Kitchen, Bedroom, Engine Room, and Garden.
01:23While they don't focus on those in the finer details of the movies, we are still given the library.
01:28The library wasn't a dome in Super Mario Galaxy, but you could enter it, and as you collected more power
01:32stars, more chapters of Rosalina's storybook opens up for you to read, which we'll talk about shortly.
01:37When Rosalina calls to the Lumas, they're hiding, and it's funny because in the games, it's pretty quick they ask
01:41you to play hide-and-seek and are transformed into star bunnies.
01:44We're quickly introduced to Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson, and I'm so proud of our girl.
01:48She's the mother of the cosmos, and I think she is for both franchises now, for that and for the
01:52MCU.
01:53Captain Marvel and this are basically one and the same.
01:55Captain Marvel confirmed to be Rosalina.
01:58Genuinely, yeah, honestly, 100%.
02:00Rosalina was a princess from space who met a lost Luma and tried to help it find its parents.
02:04However, Rosalina was also lost and lost her parents, and she got very, very lonely.
02:08So she created a home for herself and the other Lumas that she met, and in the story, it's a
02:12lot different here in the movie, but, you know, I'll save a lot of it for the end.
02:15Also, I'm gonna spoil this entire movie. I assume you guys know that already.
02:18Every night, she tells her Luma's a bedtime story, which again is something Rosalina does do in the games.
02:22And tonight, they skip the story of Peach begging instead to hear the one about the plumbers in Donkey Kong.
02:27During this scene, one of the Lumas throws a barrel like Donkey Kong does in the games, and the other
02:30one pumps its chest with Donkey Kong's tie.
02:33There's also a baby Luma, which is also in the games.
02:35The book she's reading from is the same one from the games with a star on the cover.
02:39In the games, this book explains how Rosalina first found her way to the Lumas and to outer space, something
02:43that we'll come back to again later in the movie because there's a big reveal about it.
02:47They're then interrupted by Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, and he shows up in this machine, and that's actually
02:52the Megaleg, a boss from Super Mario Galaxy.
02:54And in the games, Megaleg was encountered in the Bowser Jr.'s robot reactor boss galaxy.
02:58He's also accompanied by Kamek, who kind of works like a guardian and supporter of Bowser Jr. since losing his
03:03dad in the first movie.
03:04Bowser Jr. is here to kidnap his very own princess, just like his dad, and we'll later learn that this
03:09is kind of a common practice in this universe, or at least it's just widely known that princesses get kidnapped.
03:13It's like a common thing, which is kind of ironic because in Mario Sunshine, he was actually trying to kidnap
03:18or protect his mother Peach.
03:20Rosalina is not someone you want to fight.
03:21She's incredibly powerful.
03:23She blasts Bowser Jr., channeling her energy through her star wand, and even uses the launch stars to gain the
03:28upper hand.
03:28The fight's interrupted by a sleepy Luma calling to his mama, Rosalina, and the moment distracts just enough for Bowser
03:34to unleash a barrage of torpedoes.
03:36Torpedo Teds from the game.
03:38Luckily, the one that locks onto the Lumas and makes its way into the library is stopped, but Rosalina loses
03:42her wand in the process.
03:44Bowser Jr. then captures her and departs in his UFO.
03:46In the games, Bowser had a UFO, and he used this UFO to, yes, rip Peach's castle from the ground
03:51and kidnap Peach.
03:52We'll see this kind of play out later.
03:54With Rosalina now captured, we're now in the middle of the desert, and we see a dry boat that's messing
03:58with a Goomba, and we recognize this place from the trailers.
04:00Mario and Luigi are on their dirt bikes, speeding through the dunes, and we're officially in Tostarina, the desert town
04:05in the Sand Kingdom from Mario Odyssey.
04:07We also see Pokis from the games as they wibble-wobble.
04:10Wiggle-wiggle-wiggle-wiggle.
04:11No, wobble-wibble.
04:12Wibble-wobble.
04:12Uh, you know what they're doing.
04:14They're shaking it.
04:14They're shaking it.
04:15Then Mario launches into the air, pulling off this stunt straight out of Mario Kart World.
04:20When we see Mario and Luigi in the center of the city, the birds can fly away.
04:23It's a very fun cinematic choice, but there are birds in this town that you can scare off, and they
04:27fly away, and I think that's just a bit of finer details that you wouldn't have expected in the movie,
04:31but they did pay attention to.
04:33Once they arrive, they're looking over a clogged warp pipe for these little guys.
04:36They're the Tostarinans.
04:37They're based on a classic, like, sugar skulls, and typically you see them with sombreros, sometimes with maracas.
04:42Among them, you can also see the moais from Super Mario Odyssey that you can capture and use in the
04:46game.
04:46Inside the cave, these bats fly out, and these bats you can find in Super Mario Galaxy in Super Mario
04:51Galaxy 2, and they sort of resemble the ones from Zelda.
04:54In the dark cave, Mario and Luigi reveal their fire flowers, the power-ups that have appeared across the Mario
04:59games, allowing you to hurl fireballs.
05:01There's so many designs for the fire flowers over the years, ones without faces, ones with faces, but these ones
05:06follow the colors of the traditional one, where we're all used to seeing the outer rings being red, then yellow,
05:11then white, with the two block coin slots for eyes.
05:13But these ones, the edges are more shaped to look like flower petals.
05:16When Mario simply touches the flower, the flames stretch over his hand, and we hear the power-up sound effect
05:21from the games, and it burns away their ponchos for their distinct white-shirted, red and green overalls that they
05:25get when they're imbued with the fire flower powers.
05:27When they make the fireballs appear, it sounds like the classic bing that they make in the classic Mario games
05:31as well.
05:33As they enter, you hear the beginning notes of the underground theme, which actually comes up a few times in
05:38this movie.
05:38Inside, we see these tiny red eyes, and when Luigi bumps into one, it's revealed to be a buzzy beetle.
05:43And I like that Luigi uses fireballs on it immediately, even though it would not work on a buzzy beetle.
05:48When they reach the pipe, they hear the growls of a monster, and it turns out to be Yoshi, voiced
05:51by Donald Glover.
05:53Yoshi is perfect in every way I've ever seen him.
05:55He's my sweet little bundle of joy and my sweet baby boo-boo.
05:58I love him and his big body.
05:59I will say, I never really thought about it, but Yoshi and Mario are like the same size, so that
06:03means like Yoshi is massive, right?
06:05He's huge?
06:06They ask Yoshi how he got there, and we get a flashback.
06:09He originally broke out of his iconic green and white shell, and it's very quick, but you can hear the
06:12sound that happens when he breaks out of his eggs in the game.
06:15And then the chaos ensues.
06:17We're about to see Yoshi's misadventures in Brooklyn before escaping in a warp pipe.
06:21They play hypnotized by Biggie Smalls, which is very wild to do in the movie, but in the first movie,
06:25they also played Beastie Boys' No Sleep Till Brooklyn during the Brooklyn opening scene.
06:29So using Brooklyn artists just makes sense now.
06:31In his little adventures, we see the cat that attacked Luigi in the first movie.
06:34We also see a dog barking at him, a dog that looks like Doug from Up, but it isn't.
06:38It's actually Francis from the first movie.
06:40Yoshi swallows him and turns him into an egg.
06:42We also see Spike from the first movie in the pizzeria still, and Yoshi steals his pizza.
06:45We get a small scene where Donkey Kong is swinging on steel beams like we see in the original Donkey
06:50Kong arcade game.
06:51And I guess after saving the day in the last movie, he kind of just stayed there or went back?
06:55I don't know.
06:56Yoshi also destroys a dinosaur exhibit, and how ironic.
06:59It's dino on dino crime.
07:00Eventually, Yoshi is chased down by the authorities during this scene.
07:03He makes the yelling noise that he makes in the games, and he makes his way through the warp pipe
07:07and has been here ever since.
07:08Then they hit it off quickly, and Yoshi takes Luigi's bike.
07:11And it's actually kind of funny, this scene, because I play as Yoshi in Mario Kart, and it always feels
07:15like he is the fastest character.
07:17So him zooming around like Lightning McQueen is honestly predictable.
07:20And we're back in the stars, in space, surrounded by a bunch of pirate ships, and these are Bowser Jr.'s
07:25airship armadas.
07:26This takes us to Planet Bowser in the Junkyard Galaxy.
07:29The music playing while the UFO coasts through space is actually from Super Mario Bros. 3.
07:33It's the airship theme.
07:34We'll also see Bowser Jr. in his clown car, which we also see in the games.
07:37Later, when Bowser is climbing the stairs to his roof, we'll see his attic of portraits, and one of him
07:41is actually in the clown car.
07:43Everyone's in clown cars in this movie.
07:45Bowser Jr. refers to Rosalina as the guardian of the cosmos, the mother of the stars, because she is.
07:50When Rosalina breaks free from Bowser Jr., he uses his magic paintbrush from the games.
07:54In the games, Bowser Jr. uses this magic paintbrush as a weapon created by Professor E. Gadd, who is actually
07:59the logo on Kamek's mug in this movie.
08:01The magic brush creates goop that can create a lot of things, and we'll see him be able to spin
08:06the brush into a weapon as well.
08:07I assume this is kind of the same goop from the games, which could be used to make the proto
08:11-corona plants, which look different,
08:13but I think they still carry the same haunting effect.
08:15After subduing her again, we're then at Luigi and Mario's mushroom house.
08:19At the end of the first movie, after defeating Bowser, Luigi and Mario returned to the mushroom kingdom and had
08:23already moved into this place.
08:24Inside, we learn it's Princess Peach's birthday, so instead of the comet like in the games, we're here celebrating Peach.
08:30So a bit of backstory here from the games that would maybe help explain some of the changes in the
08:33movie.
08:34To be fair, the movie is a bit of like everything of Mario Galaxy, Mario Odyssey, and even Mario Sunshine,
08:39but we'll stick to the overarching Super Mario Galaxy of it all.
08:43So a comet passes by every 100 years, bringing with it shooting stars, along with a meteor shower of star
08:48bits.
08:49In the game, the star festival is what they're celebrating, and Mario's on his way to go there.
08:52But suddenly, Bowser attacks with his airships.
08:55Using his UFO, he rips the castle from the ground, kidnaps Peach, and carries it away.
08:59Before Mario can even reach Peach, he's sent into space by Kamek.
09:02When Mario wakes up on a grassy planet, he meets Rosalina and the other Lumas,
09:06and her ship requires power stars to function, but Bowser had already stolen them.
09:09She offers to help Mario rescue Peach and defeat Bowser in exchange for recovering the power stars.
09:14So already, since you've already seen the movie, you notice there's a lot of changes,
09:17but the same core ideas, I feel like, are still in play.
09:20Mario and Luigi's bedroom looks a lot like it did in the first movie, with the same posters and artwork.
09:24However, there's this brown book with a silver plumbing pipe on it.
09:27Funny enough, in the first movie, the book said Odyssey, hinting at the next adventure.
09:31But this time, or at least in the trailer footage I reviewed, it says plumbing.
09:34So they will be plumbing in the next movie.
09:36There's a poster in the back that says VWA.
09:38It has a red and green guy on it, and this is actually from Pro Wrestling, an NES game from
09:421986.
09:43The VWA is the promotional part of the game.
09:46And you can also see their NES console, and on the screen is Excitebike, a 1984 racing game by Nintendo
09:51for NES.
09:52In the closet, you can also see Mario's yellow construction hat,
09:54and this is a helmet he wears as Builder Mario that first appeared in Super Mario Maker in 2015.
09:59They're celebrating, and they're eating, and they're dancing, and they're hitting pinatas.
10:02We actually see a pixel Bowser pinata, and this is the Super Mario Bros, like, one design of Bowser.
10:08We see the penguins amongst the guests, and they're dancing their butts off.
10:11It's playing a bit of the Barkay's Too Hot to Stop.
10:13As everyone celebrates, Peach sits atop of her castle watching the fireworks,
10:17and the fireworks explode to be a mushroom and another star.
10:19This isn't new in Mario games.
10:21Fireworks go off when you reach the flag at the end.
10:23But in Super Mario World, you can actually watch the fireworks with Peach,
10:26and the fireworks do come in the shape of, like, a mushroom and stars in Super Mario 3D World.
10:30When Mario shows up to give her a present, it's the pink umbrella or parasol with a heart-shaped end.
10:35And as you know from the games, Peach uses this as a weapon to either defend herself or float through
10:39the air.
10:39They watch as an array of shooting stars soar across the sky,
10:42mesmerized when one big one hurls itself into the grass behind the castle.
10:46It's a luma, and they've come for Princess Peach in hopes that she can save Rosalina.
10:49They take the luma in and restore its health while the other toads eavesdrop.
10:52In this scene, I love every single toad.
10:55The blue-feathered toad guards, especially the grumpy ones with glasses.
10:57But this one, wearing the red Mario pajamas and matching Mario plushie, is so freaking cute.
11:03While the toad's trying to stop Peach from traveling beyond the stars to help Rosalina,
11:07she steps up like Peach would and takes Toad with her to go beyond the stars without caring.
11:11The toad jump into a launch star created from the luma,
11:13and Peach with her umbrella and Toad with his backpack from the first movie shoot off into space.
11:17When they shoot off, like they do in the trailer, we see certain planets,
11:20like the one that we saw very well in the trailers.
11:22This is the Drip Drop Galaxy, which is a galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy.
11:25The water of the ocean planet is teeming with bloopers that ink squirting squids in Mario games.
11:30The Mushroom Kingdom is now in a panic since Peach left,
11:33and all she left was a note saying goodbye and calling Mario Mustache.
11:36It's funny because this should remind us of Super Mario 64,
11:39where Peach also writes a letter directed to Mario in the same kind of cute paper.
11:43In the meantime, Luigi, Yoshi, and Mario feel that they can fulfill Peach's duties while she's gone,
11:47and they see her kingdom map, which is really funny because it's the map from Super Mario World.
11:51It's like a really pixelated real version. It's very cute.
11:54The song that plays when the map unravels is also Donut Plains from Super Mario World.
11:58The fun part is that the areas where they need help start flashing,
12:01just like the spots do on the map in the game.
12:03The first area takes us to the bridge where a toad is being mugged by two Hammer Bros.
12:08The music that plays is the Hammer Bros battle theme from Super Mario Bros 3.
12:11They jump onto the bricks that Mario and Luigi crash through like you would in Super Mario Bros 3 as
12:16well.
12:16Then Mario helps his toad that dropped his ice cream,
12:18and he's in blue and red overall color schemes.
12:21This is for the Ice Mario.
12:22His color matches his original look from well back in the day until Super Mario Bros 3 when they were
12:27inverted to his original colors that we see today.
12:29He fist bumps Luigi and it freezes him into a block of ice.
12:32Every time they accomplish a task, the Mario flag comes up,
12:35and it kind of feels like in Super Mario Bros 3, once completed,
12:37it would be like an L for Luigi or an M that would cover the completed level.
12:41It feels like that.
12:42Yoshi is then forced to capture a loose chain chomp in the Mushroom Kingdom.
12:45When he does, it's his little music from Yoshi Island from Smash Bros,
12:49which I recently learned combines Yoshi's song and the title screen for Yoshi's story.
12:53I didn't know that.
12:54Brian actually told me that.
12:55Their next journey takes them to this lake where we see Big Bertha causing mayhem,
12:58so Luigi uses a mystery block to get the frog suit.
13:01The frog suit from Super Mario Bros 3 is a power-up that allows the character to just jump higher
13:05and swim faster and be a frog.
13:07At one point, they're jumping off mushrooms.
13:09This is still within the Mushroom Kingdom, and they're kicking the Paragoombas.
13:12Then we see the Koopa Paratroopas.
13:14We also see Wiggler, the caterpillar from Super Mario World.
13:16This looks like the map in Super Mario World where you get Yoshi
13:19because the trees behind them have the same, like, red apples or berries on them.
13:24They have the iconic bricks, the yellow spinning blocks, and the rotating platforms.
13:28They're running with a blue toad that we will also see throughout a lot of this montage.
13:32When they make impact with the spinning blocks, they light up,
13:34whether it's them jumping on it or the Koopa Paratroopas shell landing on it.
13:37Still holding the blue toad, they're now evading Big Goombas or Grand Goomba.
13:41They're bigger than the regular Goombas.
13:43You can see the floating platforms, the mystery blocks, and the green, blue, and red warp pipe.
13:47All things you can find in Mario games.
13:48I don't think it was until New Super Mario Bros. Wii that we got the four different colors in total,
13:53the green, blue, and red, and yellow warp pipes.
13:55They were just, like, fun in color.
13:57Some would spawn different characters like the Goombas or Bob-ombs.
13:59Then they're in the clouds, still with the blue toad.
14:01They're facing off with the Lakitu from Mario games.
14:04They throw things from their clouds, oftentimes spiny eggs.
14:06If you look closely, you can see the eyes on the cloud like in the games.
14:09Notice that when Mario lands on him, the cloud disappears and leaves him with only his green shell.
14:14In some games, you can even ride the cloud.
14:16And then they put the blue toad to bed aggressively, but not without a smooch.
14:19The last alert is from within the castle, and it's Bowser.
14:22We saw this scene in the trailer.
14:23Bowser is furiously painting red strokes, loading more paint onto his canvas.
14:27We see in the bigger part of the room, he's clearly been finding himself after being captured from the first
14:32movie.
14:32Once Bowser is at peace with his creation, he steps back to reveal the Super Mario Odyssey skeleton suit.
14:37The highest priced item in Super Mario Odyssey had a whompy 9,999 coins for the rich.
14:43Bowser depicted Mario clutching his cheeks in fear, which resembles the Scream painting.
14:47But more importantly, this has also been Luigi's signature expression throughout Luigi's mansion.
14:52When the light turns on, you see that Bowser, well, he's small.
14:55And it's revealed that Bowser's castle is merely a tiny toy within Peach's castle.
14:59The last we saw of Bowser, Peach force-fed him a blue mushroom, which made him shrink into this little
15:03guy.
15:03Toad then scooped him up in a glass bottle, and then they shoved him into a cage with his tiny
15:07voice and his tiny piano.
15:08Now he has a little tiff with Mario, but not with Luigi, because they're cool.
15:12Super Mario Galaxy is gonna be responsible for a whole new generation of Mario fans.
15:16But for a lot of us, our fandom started a long, long time ago, when the NES reigned supreme.
15:21The original Mario Bros. from 1986 was where so many of us fell in love with Mario.
15:26And Yamaha has an incredible piece of Mario history that you can win!
15:30It's the original Mario Bros. Arcade Classic Series cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
15:36Unopened, in mint condition, and professionally graded at an incredible 9.4, worth $162,000.
15:43Yamaha Resort and Casino at San Manuel is celebrating their 40-year anniversary this year.
15:48Having been there a few times now, I love it.
15:50Yamaha is the only AAA five-diamond casino hotel in the country.
15:54And as soon as you walk in, you get why.
15:56It's just such a step up from any other casino I've been to.
15:59I know when you hear casino, you might not think restaurant first and foremost.
16:03But man, every time we go to Yamaha, we fall more and more in love with the Pines Modern Steakhouse.
16:08Gina routinely gets a seafood tower that's roughly the size she is.
16:12And I've had a wagyu ribeye that I get happy just remembering.
16:15It's incredible.
16:16After we ate, we hit the casino floor, which was super fun and lively.
16:20We did a roving cocktail floor in the lounges.
16:22And when the night was done, I crashed in one of the comfiest beds I've ever slept in.
16:25Truly, if you're looking for a posh getaway, Yamaha has everything you could possibly want.
16:29And if you needed any more excuses to go, you can win.
16:32It's the original Mario Brothers Arcade Classic Series cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System,
16:37unopened, in mint condition, and professionally graded at an incredible 9.4, worth $162,000.
16:43You must be 21.

16:58Bowser sings, sipping the soup, cleaning the paint.
17:01As we know, this Bowser loves singing.
17:03He's a true artist.
17:04But he's singing to his Super Mario 64 theme, yet it's a bit more attuned to the Game Boy
17:08Advance Bowser Castle theme, which is basically the same song, just remixed and a little bit
17:12faster.
17:12Bowser's mini castle has red carpet running right through it, which, along with the stonework,
17:17is in line with the portrayal in the games.
17:19There's also wall hangings with his face on them, and Bowser historically seems to just
17:23love decorating with his face.
17:24We'll see also some Koopas celebrating with his face later.
17:27The spiral staircase leads to the second floor, where you can see the infamous piano, the Peach's
17:31piano.
17:32We're also going to hear a little snippet of that song a little bit later.
17:35On the third floor, you can see Bowser's incredible works of art that we flagged in
17:38the trailer breakdown, so I'll run by them a little bit quickly here.
17:40We see Princess Peach in her iconic pink dress, posing with her crown.
17:44This, I believe, is just Mario with a red paint stroke across the eye and green above
17:48his cap.
17:48Bowser's still an artist.
17:49He makes mistakes sometimes.
17:50Sometimes he wants to be sloppy.
17:52Then we see smiley flowers.
17:53We've seen them a lot, mainly in Yoshi games like Yoshi Island.
17:56What's next looks like a portrait of Bowser Jr., and above that is another portrait of Bowser.
18:00You can tell by the spikes.
18:01It actually resembles the painting done by Jr. during Bowser's Fury.
18:04Below that is another portrait of Bowser.
18:06This time, he's flying in the Koopa Clown ship.
18:08There's a touch of the famous Super Mario Clouded Sky as well.
18:11Below that is a painting of a bundle of piranha plants.
18:13There's also a painting of Koopa Paratroopa, the winged Koopa.
18:16And across that is a sultry portrait of Bowser.
18:18This man might be full of himself, but he's also full of perfection.
18:21He reveals his painting to Mario, which he's not impressed by, which makes Bowser so angry
18:25that he destroys it.
18:26Still working through my demons, I suppose.
18:31Anyway.
18:32And it seems like he's trying to be rehabilitated and become a good guy, even having a weekly
18:36book club with Luigi where he brings the soup to learn to be better, but Mario couldn't
18:39care less.
18:40A rupture beneath the castle shakes everyone inside, and this is where we get a great view of the
18:44stained glass peach mural straight out of the Super Mario games.
18:47It's Bowser Jr. coming to rescue his father and the UFO, and when Mario recognizes how
18:52high up they pull the castle from the ground, he says his iconic Mamma Mia.
18:56Mamma Mia.
18:57Bowser Jr. jumps down in his look from Super Mario Bros.
19:00Wonder, where he had more of a futuristic vibe and a face mask with a green line running
19:04through it.
19:04He turns his paintbrush into a mace and starts messing the castle up even more.
19:08And it's during this fight you actually see the Star Cup trophy for Mario Kart in the
19:11bag.
19:12Fortunately enough for Bowser Jr., he's saved by Kamek and the Mega Leg, but that doesn't
19:15stop Yoshi from swallowing him up and turning him into an egg with glasses.
19:18In the chaos, the UFO stops beaming the castle and gravity takes over, dropping it hard and
19:23them dangling from the top.
19:24On the ground, the castle keeps crashing around them and Yoshi grabs Mario and Luigi, giving
19:28them their first ride on his back.
19:30Which is very sweet, but also they need to get away from death.
19:32While running in the air, Yoshi does his famous flutter kick and they are safe from the
19:36castle, crushing them.
19:37But alas, Bowser is now free.
19:38But he's still small.
19:39We pass a planet with these little bunnies jumping and we'll see them a little bit later
19:43at the Gateway Galaxy, but these are star bunnies from Super Mario Galaxy that I talked about.
19:47You gotta catch these guys at the start of the game.
19:49We also see this donut ring with vines that some people believe could be the hedgering
19:52planet you can both shoot through and land on.
19:55Peach has officially begun her journey at the Gateway Galaxy and it looks similar to how it
19:59does in the games except it's a hundred times bigger.
20:01While Peach flies into the Gateway Galaxy, you see this giant star surrounded by three different
20:05pods, a blue one, a pink one, and a yellow one, which makes you go, wow, what else could
20:09those three things symbolize or represent if not Peach, Rosalina, and some other yellow
20:14princess?
20:15Who could it be?
20:17Wario.
20:18It's Wario!
20:18I knew it was him.
20:19So I feel like they were giving Easter eggs or little breadcrumbs that it was going to
20:22be someone at the end anyways.
20:24On the ground, we're directed by three robots.
20:26These are Guillermo's.
20:27We see them in Super Mario Galaxy.
20:28They're basically maintenance robots.
20:30So this track, they're also just very annoying.
20:32We'll also see these little guys, these are Whittles, the tree spirits from Super Mario
20:36Galaxy 2.
20:37There's also these snail characters, which I might be pronouncing this completely wrong
20:40and I'm so sorry, the Bublanians?
20:42They're snail creatures in the seaside kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey.
20:45The different transit tubes takes them to different areas and Peach and Toad are headed
20:48to the flight decks, which have a yellow box with a ship on it, but the others must represent
20:52just different planets because that's what they're showing us.
20:54It's also here you see characters that resemble like beavers, but they're actually moles.
20:58It's Monty the mole.
20:59We've also seen him in the teaser for the movie showing off the Mushroom Kingdom.
21:02We also see the Piantas, the island people in Super Mario Sunshine.
21:05The bunnies and the penguins are also among these characters traveling, but we've already
21:08seen them, so I don't really need to bring them up again.
21:10Peach and Toad run to the information desk to get some help and here's where we see the
21:13Comfort from Super Mario 3D World.
21:15There's actually a couple of them wandering around.
21:17This is also where we're alerted of Rosalina's disappearance from GTW News.
21:21They're the ones alerting everyone that she's gone, she's missing, where is she?
21:24Then we knew Kiki, the thief, and in the games they were still a thief.
21:27They steal Toad's backpack and then they jump through a glitchy brick wall.
21:30This leads to them in a back alley chase that leads them to a standoff, and this is when
21:34we hear the Super Mario Bros underground theme music again.
21:37This then leads them through another brick wall into a speakeasy.
21:40The art that they had to also come through on the other side is for Minus World, a glitch
21:43level in Super Mario Bros that's an underwater level that just never ends.
21:47But also to find that level, you have to go through a brick wall.
21:49So it's like, oh, they had to go through a brick wall to go find this glitch.
21:52To the right of that, you'll see a poster with a spiny on it.
21:55When we see the faces of all the bar patrons, it's a lot of the same folks that we saw
21:59in
21:59the casino that I mentioned in the breakdown.
22:01We'll go over here just really quickly.
22:02Like the Octumbas, the Spineys, the Goombas, the Bob-ombs, even the Buzzy Beetle, the green
22:06and red coin coffers, Spike, Sniff It, the Sledgehammer Bro.
22:10Back left, we see the Piranha Plant, and in front of them is Charge and Chuck, the large
22:13Koopa that runs and tackles, and its table has a dry bones and a cage underneath.
22:17I've broken down the scene of the trailer so many times that I remember the faces.
22:21I know the faces.
22:22So when I was watching the movie, I was like, what is that red and white mask over there
22:26and a shot and an angle that we haven't seen yet?
22:28Now I recognize it's from Wart's level, Super Mario Bros 2, and it makes sense why they didn't
22:32want to show it to us.
22:32It would give too much away.
22:34When they overlook the city, I also love that you can see the Nintendo 64 holographic logo.
22:39It looks just really nice.
22:40Now back with Mario, Yoshi, Luigi, and Bowser.
22:42Mario and Bowser get into a little tiff where Mario steps on him and he grows back into being
22:47regular size, which like most Mario games, once you're hurt, you lose your power up.
22:50So since Bowser was made small by the mushroom, I feel like this impact just allowed him to
22:54turn back into regular size.
22:56And now we're back with Peach and Toad, who have now made it to the gravity-defined casino
22:59that we've seen in the trailers.
23:00Ukiki leads them to King Wart, voiced by Luis Guzman.
23:03Wart's from Super Mario Bros 2.
23:04He's a giant frog and you'd have to defeat him in the final boss battle.
23:08And like we'll see later, you have to throw a vegetable into Wart's mouth while he spits
23:11bubbles to defeat him.
23:12So this is exactly what happens here with the radish, like in the games.
23:15His goons are Birdo, who first appeared alongside the ninja in Doki Doki Panic, where she's the first
23:19boss.
23:20And just so you guys know, Doki Doki Panic is the Japanese platformer that would be turned
23:23into Super Mario Bros 2 and released in America in the 80s.
23:26She's a goon, along with Mouser from Super Mario Bros 2, also featured in Doki Doki Panic.
23:30And Claw Grip is the third goon that first appeared in Mario Bros 2.
23:34In their battle, he sends out a horde of ninji while inside the casino.
23:36And like I mentioned earlier, the ninji were first introduced in Doki Doki Panic as well.
23:40As some of you Smash Bro fiends can already tell, a lot of Peach's fighting is in like Super
23:45Smash Bros.
23:46She's using her umbrella as a weapon like she does in the games.
23:49This is exactly why I hate fighting a Peach Mane.
23:51She beats you upside your head, then she'll launch you back.
23:54And I hate, I hate it.
23:55I hate it.
23:56I hate it.
23:56I hate it.
23:56Toad also gets a penguin suit.
23:57This is a power-up that you can get in the new Super Mario Bros Wii.
24:00And he's just sliding around the casino.
24:02At the end of the fight, Peach punts what I think is a radish into King Ward's mouth.
24:05She then takes the power-up mushroom and grows two sizes bigger in order to intimidate
24:09him into telling Peach where she can find Rosalina.
24:12We're then at the Honey Hive Galaxy, which is another location in Super Mario Galaxy.
24:15They support their Honey Queen or Queen Bee in the games like they do here in the movie.
24:19And the Queen Bee is voiced by Issa Rae.
24:21For the destruction they cause, mainly the castle destroying their flower fields, they're
24:24being forced to stay and work in the honey mines.
24:26However, Bowser takes it upon himself to volunteer as tribute so Yoshi, Luigi, and Mario can leave.
24:30She allows them to depart for the Gateway Galaxy on one of their flying beetles that she
24:34even says looks miserable.
24:35And these are the Mandibugs from Super Mario Galaxy.
24:37Once they leave, Bowser is then seen working on this chain gang for the other little prisoner
24:42bees.
24:42And this is when he recounts the ending of the last movie, but like in his own way where
24:46he got stood up at the altar.
24:48Man, you tried to force her to marry you.
24:50And this is also when we hear the beginning keys to the Peach song.
24:53He's then beamed up and it's by Bowser Jr.
24:55And they get to be together again.
24:56And it's actually very cute.
24:58And it's also a very funny running joke about like how Bowser just wasn't there as a father.
25:03He jokes as soon as he sees him and says, you really grew up when I wasn't paying attention.
25:07Yeah, it's funny.
25:08It's funny.
25:09It sounds bad when it's coming out of my mouth, but it's very funny in the movie.
25:11You'll get it.
25:12Kids don't love it.
25:12We learned that when Bowser Jr. was just a baby, Bowser would tuck him in and tell him
25:16stories.
25:16There's a bunch of little stuffed creatures on Bowser Jr.'s bed, like the bull rusher for
25:20Mario Wonder, a chain chop, and even the octopus you battle in Mario Galaxy.
25:24That night, the puppet story was about how Bowser and Bowser Jr.
25:27sought a planet that they could call home, creating Planet Bowser.
25:30It had a theme park and also the biggest canon capable of destroying the universe called
25:34the Boomsday Weapon, which in Mario Galaxy 2 was called the Boomsday Machine, where Bowser
25:38Jr. guarded the Grand Star.
25:39In order to power it, they need Rosalina's powers draining them in order to make it work.
25:43When we're back with Toad and Peach, they've reached the information desk.
25:46And this is where we learn that the front desk information guy is Rob.
25:50You might have played as Rob in Smash Bros.
25:52Rob was a toy released for NES in the 80s.
25:54And it was ridiculous.
25:56It was bad.
25:56It was basically kind of broken.
25:58But now he's being used as cameos.
25:59So it's kind of funny.
26:00Fun side note about the Gateway Galaxy that Rob clearly wouldn't be able to help you with
26:04because he's not really that good at his job.
26:06You can actually enter the Gateway Galaxy through Universal's promotions digitally.
26:10And Rob introduces you and tells you about the Gateway Galaxy.
26:12Then you can enter the different pipes to take you to different flight decks.
26:15And that is actually the map right behind Rob at the information desk.
26:18When they make it to the flight deck, we see a lot of funny things and fun things.
26:22And I'm sure there's a lot of details here on ships that I just couldn't catch when I'm
26:25watching this movie on a big screen, you guys.
26:27What am I going to do?
26:28Ask someone to rewind it?
26:29There's a card of Guillermo's that go by.
26:31And at the end of the card, it has the Powell blocks.
26:33And one of the spacecrafts is itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny in the Pikmin Step Out.
26:37That's so cute.
26:37That's when we're introduced to Fox McCloud, voiced by Glenn Powell.
26:40Fox McCloud is the pilot of Team Star Fox that first appeared in 1993 in the game of the
26:45same name and like his short introduction explains, yes, he's stopping the evil scientist from
26:49taking over the lilac system and he loves his barrel rolls.
26:52His team consists of Slippy, Peppy, and Falco.
26:55They fly R-Wings.
26:56From his story, it turns out that his ship malfunctioned and it brought him into this different
27:00universe, this one that we're in right now.
27:02And he hasn't been able to get back.
27:03So that's very interesting.
27:04But that doesn't matter because he's very cool and I don't care what he does.
27:07His scene has a bunch of little details, like his music mixed with what I think is a bit
27:11of his main theme music.
27:12And at one point, you see Slippy from the Nintendo 64 Star Fox.
27:16When Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi finally meet up with Peach and Toad, they're introduced to
27:18Fox, but not before we see Fox's cool symbol on the dashboard before we lock in.
27:23That's when we're intercepted by Bowser Jr. and Bowser.
27:25And when they could kill them, Bowser Jr. decides instead to turn them into babies with this
27:30gun.
27:30There's also a scene right here where we see a wall of weapons.
27:33I know that Torpedo Ted is one of those weapons.
27:35Again, you guys, I'm watching this in theaters.
27:37I ain't got time to pause it.
27:38And by I don't got time, I'm riding like this in the dark.
27:41They crash land on Fossil Falls.
27:42And this is the location in the Cascade Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey.
27:45This is also where you'd find the T-Rex.
27:47You can control the T-Rex by throwing Cappy on her.
27:49The baby Mario uses his bones to tap on the T-Rex's teeth when they find it.
27:53And it's the notes to the Super Mario Bros theme song.
27:57And I actually laughed at this part when the babies were doing the most and didn't wake up
28:01the T-Rex, but Yoshi screamed after getting the gun down from the tree and that a wolf
28:05the beast instead.
28:06After accidentally turning themselves into babies and falling off a broken bridge into
28:10T-Rex infested waters, the babies accidentally shrink the T-Rex as well.
28:14So everyone's safe now.
28:15They then returned to their adult forms, but now they're stuck on the planet trying to
28:18fix the ship.
28:19That is until they're saved by the Lumas who were being a bunch of weirdos back home
28:23since they didn't have to go to bed.
28:24They were in their own Mario and Donkey Kong arena fights since their mom was abducted.
28:28They arrive at the Comet Observatory, specifically in the library, and Peach finds the book they
28:32never finished reading at the beginning.
28:34And it reveals that Peach and Rosalina are actually sisters and together they're the strongest
28:38beings in the galaxy.
28:39Rosalina had to send Peach through a warp pipe to keep her safe from anyone trying to
28:43steal their powers, which is nothing like the original stories.
28:46There was an original plan for Nintendo where in early, early development, they were going
28:50to make them related for Super Mario Galaxy, but they ended up not doing it.
28:53So quick notes, we don't know what villain was in search of Peach and Rosalina, though
28:56it is, again, good to note that princesses are pretty nice to steal in this universe.
29:01And from Bowser's story, clearly everyone's aware that Rosalina is one of the powerful
29:05beings.
29:05And number two, in Rosalina's original storybook, she talks about a tiny blue planet that she's
29:09originally from.
29:10And I wonder if it's supposed to be inspired by that because the planet does look blue.
29:14Back with Bowser and Bowser Jr., they're giving their speech and Bowser says,
29:17sometimes on this rainbow road of life, we lose our way, which we know is the worst map
29:22in Mario Kart.
29:23Maybe that's just me because I die in it all the time and I see no point.
29:26The Koopas are also holding signs with his faces on it.
29:29And again, it just matches all of Bowser's pendants and all of his decorations.
29:33Fox is now piloting Rosalina's observatory when they first approach Bowser Jr.'s armada.
29:38He evades them in their artillery and you hear Toad yell, do a barrel roll, which is what
29:42Peppy says in the games.
29:44Do a barrel roll.
29:45Then he launches Peach, Yoshi, Luigi, and Mario through a star launcher, sending them straight
29:50toward planet Bowser.
29:51They evade these massive rocks.
29:53However, I believe that these are another location.
29:55The Freeze Flame Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy, specifically the lava core planet that you
29:58visit during the missing Freeze Flames blistering core mission.
30:01When Mario and Peach are outrunning the Koopa security, they fall through a trap door and
30:05it's really giving Super Mario 64, which does lead you to Bowser's trap.
30:09We saw bits of their escape through this level in the trailers and we see the gravity gauntlets
30:13and you can see the floating message block.
30:15That's the one from Super Mario World.
30:16Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. is watching them through his security system cameras that work like
30:21a video game.
30:22It's like a tiny little 8-bit Mario and Peach and it's clearly a mock of a Bowser level.
30:26Bowser Jr. sends a bunch of Bob-Ombs on them, but luckily the two evade them as well.
30:30And at the end, after successfully making it through Bowser Jr.'s level, the Super Mario
30:331 Castle Flag music plays.
30:41Saddened but determined to be the best dad he can be, Bowser challenges them in honor of
30:45his son.
30:46On the bridge, he faces off against Peach and Mario, axes in hand, and this is all inspired
30:50by Super Mario Bros. when you have to get past Bowser, who's throwing axes at you, and
30:54once you reach the golden one, it breaks the bridge with him falling into the lava, which
30:58is exactly how it plays out in this movie.
31:00But Bowser then returns as Dry Bowser, that first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. as a
31:05result of Mario dropping him into lava, so we're doing it again here.
31:08Mario takes on Bowser and Bowser Jr. by himself, while Peach rescues Rosalina.
31:11The one-on-two with Mario is just not fair.
31:14Bowser Jr. has already donned his Bowser's Fury power-up.
31:17Luckily, Luigi and Yoshi arrive to help, and they have power-ups.
31:20The Drill Mario, Cloud Luigi, and Blimp Yoshi.
31:23Drill Mario comes from Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
31:25After taking the Drill Mushroom, he'll take upon this form.
31:28He can drill into breakable objects and burrow underground and into the ceiling.
31:32Cloud Luigi comes from Super Mario Galaxy 2, once obtaining the Cloud Flower.
31:35And Blimp Yoshi is a power-up in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
31:38After Yoshi eats the Blimp Fruit, he'll turn into a light blue ball and float like a balloon.
31:43Once making severe impact with the ground, both Luigi and Mario lose their power-ups.
31:47Yoshi was unfortunately less than helpful, until he smacks the magical paintbrush from
31:52Bowser Jr.'s hands.
31:53Luigi immediately draws as best as he can, and he creates Mr. Game & Watch, who feels very
31:58useless.
31:58But like in Super Smash Bros., his abilities are too powerful.
32:01Then in retaliation, once Bowser Jr. gets the magical paintbrush back, he instantly creates
32:06a moat of paint that transforms into a dragon.
32:08And I think this is the ruined dragon you find in Super Mario Odyssey's ruined kingdom.
32:12The Beast swallows Jr., and then Mario powers up one last time, turning into the flying Mario
32:17from Super Mario Galaxy.
32:18It's activated by touching a red star.
32:20It allows him to fly and gather a bunch of stuff nearby by spinning, and that spinning
32:24move is what he does to rip Bowser out of that stomach.
32:27Happily, Bowser Jr. is now reunited with Bowser, and Peach and Rosalina make enough contact for
32:31their combined Cosmo-filled powers to destroy planet Bowser, forcing the planet to terraform
32:36into a green, beautiful garden planet.
32:38The day was saved by two sisters and two brothers, plus Yoshi.
32:43Now back with the Lumas, they want to visit the Mushroom Kingdom, only to learn that it was
32:47destroyed when Bowser Jr. pulled it from the ground, from the sky, and to fall back down
32:51into the ground.
32:52They start rebuilding the Mushroom Castle, and genuinely, this looks like it's directly out
32:56of Super Mario Maker.
32:57And the castle is on its last touches when Mario hits a power block, gaining the feather
33:01to get his cape to fly Peach's flag to the top of it.
33:04We learn that Bowser and Bowser Jr. are now in prison, a prison guarded by the weird blue
33:08Luma, who is scaring them with their sadness and despair.
33:11And right when you think the movie is over, we get a reveal at the Gateway Galaxy.
33:15A little hand knocks Ukiki in the face, and it's Daisy!
33:19She stops Ukiki from stealing another person's bag, and we wanted Daisy.
33:22I mean, let's be real, who doesn't want Daisy?
33:24I do want Wario, but no, I want Daisy first.
33:27Oh my god!
33:29What?
33:30She was first introduced in Super Mario Land in 1989, and Daisy doesn't really hold the
33:35spotlight, but I'll tell you what!
33:36If it's Mario Tennis, it's me, her, and Birdo every day.
33:39I will say, even though we're getting Daisy, I think there's plans for Star Fox leaving
33:43that door open.
33:44And that's it for our Super Mario Galaxy movie breakdown.
33:47From almost every Easter egg to big cameo reveals, this was made for deep, deep, deep, deep,
33:52deep, deep, deep fans, I know I missed a lot, because I watched this in theaters, and there
33:56was so many sounds, so much music.
33:58If we did a breakdown of when the DVDs out, oh my god, there's going to be so much things.
34:03I know that there were definitely spacecrafts at the Gateway Galaxy that I just couldn't,
34:07and I kept being like, oh, what's his name?
34:10What's his name?
34:11Captain Falcon?
34:13Captain Falcon?
34:14Is it Captain Falcon?
34:14Yeah, I was like, talking to you, this is going to be the breakdown.
34:17Captain Falcon's ship is probably in there.
34:19Who else flies a ship?
34:20Everybody that flies a ship is probably there in that cameo, and I just could not make out
