Thousands of fans lined the route from Ndjili International Airport in Kinshasa on Sunday to welcome the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national team, the Leopards, after they secured their first World Cup qualification in 52 years.

Footage shows the players waving to supporters as their vehicle drove through the crowded capital. Fans lined the streets, cheering, singing and waving national flags.

"We are back on the international stage, competing against other nations for Congolese football. Thank you to the players, the coaching staff, and the Congolese people who share in this victory with the Head of State," said a supporter.

DRC President Felix Tshisekedi personally welcomed the footballers at Martyrs Stadium, emphasising the significance of their sports triumph to the country.

"Our children, our leopards, have brought us joy and honour," Tshisekedi said. "This time we won't miss out on going to the World Cup. Our children have paved the way; we won't miss the World Cup again. We've removed the thorn forever. Congo has reclaimed its place."

"Thanks to the Head of State, we've had the opportunity to fight for our country. We didn't fight alone, but all with you. Honour belongs to the country. We will continue to fight for the country," DRC team captain Chancel MBemba said.

Defender Axel Tuanzebe sealed the Leopards' place at the tournament with an extra-time winner against Jamaica in Mexico on March 31, securing Africa's final qualification spot.

The DRC will open their Group K campaign against Portugal in Houston on June 17. They are in a group with Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan.
