Celebrations erupted across Kinshasa on Tuesday as the DR Congo national football team secured a 1–0 victory over Jamaica, booking their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ending a 52-year drought.

Footage shows supporters in bars and on the streets chanting and celebrating as the decisive goal was scored. The well-known super fan 'Lumumba' was also seen parading through the capital amid a chorus of horns and cheers.

“It's been 52 years since we last went to the World Cup. We're so happy to be participating in this best competition in the world,” said Frank Mbala, a supporter.

“Congratulations to the Congolese people, we're all in this together. DRC is a strong country. We did it, and it’s on!” he continued.

“I've never experienced anything like this since I was born, so it felt good. I congratulate our players; this time they played very well” added Karen Baswa, a second DRC supporter.

The winning goal came in extra time from Axel Tuanzebe, sealing qualification for the expanded 48-team tournament.

DR Congo, competing as the 'Leopards', will face Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan in Group K, marking their return to the global stage for the first time since their 1974 appearance as Zaire.

The qualification follows the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams, with DR Congo topping their group to secure one of Africa’s nine available spots.
