South Sudan struggles to clear landmines left by decades of war
Transcript
00:06South Sudan had hoped to clear all anti-personnel minefields and cluster munitions in the country
00:12by this year.
00:14However, the government says efforts are complicated by a lack of funding, continued insecurity
00:20and flooding in the country.
00:23The United Nations says more than 5,000 South Sudanese have been killed or injured by landmine
00:29mines and an exploded ordinance since South Sudan's independence 15 years ago.
00:36In our country, mine action is not only for clearing land, but also for protecting civilians,
00:46supporting peacekeeping, mobility, enabling humanitarian operations and creating safe
00:55conditions for return, recovery and socio-economic growth.
01:01South Sudan has fertile land that could be crucial to achieving the government's goal of national
01:07food self-sufficiency.
01:10However, for far too long, landmines and other unexploded munitions have severely hindered farming
01:18activities.
01:19We are implementing critical intervention including survey clearance, survey and clearance, explosive
01:29ordinance disposal and explosive ordinance risk education.
01:35The government says the risk education initiative equipped farmers and community members with the
01:41knowledge and skills to identify potential threats and adopt safe practices.
01:47It says that ensures they can work on their lands confidently and without fear.
01:53The United Nations mine action in South Sudan or UNMA says it has so far destroyed more than
02:001 million explosive devices and 4.2 million bullets.
02:06Families torn apart by landmines can be found all over South Sudan.
02:10The United Nations says the threat from the remnants of the country's long civil war is still huge.
02:17People are living in this area, even if there is no accident, nothing happens, it doesn't
02:23mean that the hazard is always out.
02:25So anything they see, anything they get, they still need to report it through the normal reporting
02:31system informing the government.
02:34South Sudan's government says most of the country's landmines are left over from the 21-year
02:40war between the then Northern and Southern Sudanese people.
02:43That war ended in 2005.
02:46But another war between 2013 and 2018 also left behind dangerous explosives.
