Burkina Faso: Govt. denies report alleging more than 1,800 killed since junta took power

Burkina Faso's government has denounced a report alleging that more than 1,800 civilians have been killed since the junta seized power three years ago as 'false'. The report was published by Human Rights Watch and based on open source information.

00:00Burkina Faso has denied a report that more than 1,800 civilians have been killed in acts
00:06constituting crimes against humanity since Ibrahim Traoré forcibly took power three
00:11years ago.
00:13Human Rights Watch, which released the report, blamed the majority of the killings on the
00:17military and allied militias, and the remainder on Islamist militants.
00:23It's based on analysis of open-source information including videos and satellite imagery, as
00:28well as discussions with witnesses and survivors.
00:33One of the deadliest incidents described in the report dates back to December 2023, when
00:39the military and allied militias are said to have killed more than 400 civilians in the
00:43town of Jibo.
00:46Survivors refer to the killings as brutal and say they have suffered psychological trauma.
00:51The government denounced the organisation's findings as false and described them as quote
00:55conjecture and serious unfounded claims.
01:01It's not the first time it has faced such accusations.
01:04Burkina Faso is one of several West African nations that has seen coups in recent years.
