00:15Right, what a day.
00:18Bought wife's birthday present.
00:20New close-up baby.
00:22Bought meat.
00:23Bought dog biscuits.
00:25Called Uncle not... Uncle Ego.
00:27There was something else I needed to do
00:29before I took rugs out.
00:32Can you remember?
00:36What about you?
00:39It was something important
00:41I needed to remember.
00:53Oh no!
01:07What about you?
01:16I'm sorry!
01:20I need to...
01:20I need to...
01:24Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:26What's with all this melodrama?
01:27You'll be upsetting people.
01:30You talking to yourself?
01:33Anyway, where were we?
01:34Now that I'm no longer fit to go outside,
01:37it's a good job I've got some good old-fashioned indoor hobbies to be getting on with.
01:41Cue credits.
02:05Hello and welcome to Blyde Back Hobbies,
02:07a channel dedicated to the love of all things miniature,
02:10whether that's painting, building, crafting, kit bashing, and or dioramas.
02:15At the centre of it all will be the miniatures themselves.
02:18I've decided to start with Warhammer 40K.
02:20Specifically, these guys, the Space Marines.
02:23Call them that, call them Adeptis Astartes, call them whatever you want.
02:26And if they're good enough for Henry Cavill, then they're good enough for us.
02:29Knights in armour, set in space against a quasi-Gothic backdrop,
02:33fighting a war that will seemingly never end.
02:36Now as you can see, there are plenty of different varieties of Space Marine to choose from.
02:39Being that it's a full moon, and that we're trapped in Yorkshire,
02:42a place so spooky that Dracula decided to land in Whitney for his holidays,
02:46we're going to stick with the theme of dark and Gothic.
02:49I can't think of any chapter more dark or Gothic than everybody's favourite space vampires.
02:55No, no, you great Burke, the Blood Angels.
02:59Now I've dipped my toes in and out of the Warhammer universe since probably the late 80s,
03:04starting with miniatures, then things like Space Crusade,
03:08the original release of the Rogue Trainer.
03:11The first iteration of Warhammer 40K had heavy influences from 2000 AD,
03:16and in particular Judge Dredd.
03:17The more modern style is known as Grimdark,
03:21which is a bleak world,
03:23where every day is Halloween without the fun,
03:25nobody gets sweets,
03:26all you get is a large stick and a box of matches to get you through the basic training,
03:35where the passing criteria is running away from the local monstrosities,
03:39and beating whoever keeps up with your back with said stick.
03:42And when all's done,
03:43you can create a large pyre from your fallen comrades,
03:46and use your matches to cook and eat the edible bits.
03:48Still, enough about Barnsley.
03:50Back to 40K.
03:52White Dwarf magazine came out every month.
03:54I have a lot of fond memories of that.
03:55That had a sort of gritty punk aesthetic that was raw,
03:59chaotic,
03:59a lot of bright colours,
04:00a little bit over the top.
04:01Then through to the late 90s,
04:03it evolved a gothy lot.
04:04The old style miniatures were hand sculpted,
04:07and then mass produced.
04:08I have a lot of nostalgia for the old sculpts.
04:11They'd look a little bit stubby-limbed,
04:12and less realistically proportioned than modern miniatures.
04:16Still love them,
04:17still great,
04:17but it's been a long time since I've actually bought Anywarama 40K,
04:20so what I need to do is buy myself a kit.
04:22So let's have a look and see what we can find.
04:24A little longer than a few minutes later.
04:27I usually buy most of my miniatures secondhand.
04:29It's a little bit naughty, if I'm honest.
04:31You should always try and support your local game shop,
04:33because it keeps all those troglodytes off the street,
04:35and stops us from alienating pensioners,
04:37children,
04:38and other similar normal folk.
04:39I bought this,
04:40brand new this time,
04:41and we don't do things by halves,
04:43so I've ended up a kidney short and a box set up.
04:46These are the new Primaris space marines,
04:49which are true scale.
04:50These look great.
04:51Right, so we've got some assault troops here,
04:53and a captain,
04:54and there's a nice variety of different miniatures there,
04:56and then I remember these guys at the back.
04:57Hang on a minute.
04:58There's something not quite right about them.
05:00It's, um...
05:02Oh my God.
05:04Stop!
05:05Yes!
05:05These used to look better than this.
05:10It's...
05:10It's not just me, is it?
05:12I mean,
05:13what do you think of them?
05:17What about you?
05:19It's...
05:19We are not...
05:21There's an hour for it.
05:22I'm just gonna have to think some.
05:24Now, Games Workshop have made some excellent models over the years,
05:27but in my opinion,
05:28this isn't one of them.
05:29When I see this,
05:30I think less Avenging Angel,
05:31and more this.
05:34But,
05:34then again,
05:35maybe that's what they were going for.
05:37Right,
05:37I'll just channel my internet spirit animal.
05:42Let's see now.
05:44Marines,
05:45Gothic,
05:46Golden,
05:47Angel,
05:48Oh!
05:50Stay focused.
05:52Ah,
05:54perfect.
05:55As you can see,
05:56I've used some magic cream
05:58to get my hands back
05:59to a decent dexterous state.
06:00I'm looking through some of the models
06:02that I have to find
06:03a more suitable armour.
06:04I've decided to use
06:05the Stormcast Eternals,
06:07Games Workshop miniatures
06:08from the Age of Sigmar
06:09Fantasy range.
06:10They're a similar size
06:11to the Marines,
06:12and the style looks almost perfect
06:14for what we're trying to achieve.
06:15After sifting through
06:16several different options,
06:17I've settled on
06:18two main bodies.
06:20I like the shape of the armour
06:22and the cloaks that they are
06:24had.
06:24I also thought that
06:25they'd go together nicely
06:26with some old parts
06:28from a Blood Angels kit
06:29that I had lying around.
06:30I think these will all do nicely.
06:32Let's start putting them together.
06:33One of the bodies
06:34needed paint stripping,
06:35so I've soaked it
06:36in isopropyl alcohol
06:37for about 30 minutes
06:39and then scrubbed it
06:40with an old toothbrush
06:41and that brought everything
06:42up nice and clean
06:43and we're ready
06:43to put that together.
06:45And at this stage,
06:46I'm just picking up parts,
06:47seeing what fits
06:48and seeing what I think
06:49will look nice.
06:50I am planning on
06:51altering the shoulder pads
06:53and putting on the real
06:55Space Marine pauldrons
06:56because they've got
06:57that nice domed effect.
06:58The old kit that I'm using
07:00have actually got
07:01the embossed
07:02Blood Angels logo
07:03on there,
07:03so that'll look pretty nice,
07:05I think.
07:05And I've also got
07:06quite a few bits and bobs
07:08from the new kit
07:09that I've bought
07:10and the old one
07:11that have got a lot of
07:12chapter-specific
07:13Blood Angels logos
07:15and things like that,
07:15so we'll have a little bit
07:16of flair to them
07:17and see what we can
07:18put together
07:19and give it that
07:20signature Blood Angels look.
07:28I wanted a real,
07:28authentic angel-looking wing
07:30and I bought these
07:31from a shop on eBay
07:32called DK Miniatures.
07:34They're really nice prints
07:35and I'm very happy with them.
07:35I suggest you go and
07:36check out its store.
07:37This pack actually came
07:38with three sets,
07:39so what I'm doing at the minute
07:40is I'm just blue-tacking
07:41them on the back
07:41to have a look
07:42and see which sets
07:42I think are nicest
07:44on each miniature.
07:45Then we'll mix and match
07:46and see what fits.
07:47The keen-eyed amongst,
07:48you may have noticed
07:49that I've decided
07:49to make one of my Marines
07:50a beaky,
07:51which is the one,
07:52funnily enough,
07:52with the pointy nose
07:53and before any of you
07:55jump on the comments
07:56immediately screaming
07:57that's not law-specific
07:58or that never happened,
08:00I would just like to say
08:01I don't care.
08:02These are my toy soldiers
08:03and I'll do what I like with them.
08:07I tried out three
08:08different sorts of backpacks,
08:09the ones that came
08:10with the wings,
08:11the ones that are
08:12in the new box
08:13and I finally decided
08:15to settle on
08:16the original ones
08:17as I thought
08:18they looked a little bit
08:19more in proportion
08:20and didn't take anything
08:21away from the wings.
08:22So then I'm just
08:23attaching them
08:23using a combination
08:24of super glue,
08:26modelling putty
08:27and then a little bit
08:27of liquid green stuff
08:29just put on with a brush
08:30to fill in some of the gaps.
08:36Okay, so we're just about there.
08:37I'm just filling in a gap
08:38on this leg
08:40on one particular model.
08:42This is an unfortunate
08:43side effect
08:44to some of the push fit models
08:45they don't always go together
08:46as flush as they are designed to.
08:49But then again,
08:49to be fair,
08:50I am messing with the model
08:52and changing bits
08:53so it's going to put
08:54a little bit of pressure
08:55on the joints.
08:56But we'll patch this guy up
08:58and then we're just about there.
09:02We'll get the air dryer on there
09:03to speed up the drying process
09:05and on we go.
09:07So it's time to airbrush
09:09the miniatures now
09:09so that we can get them undercoated.
09:11I'm going to do
09:12a form of
09:14zenithal highlight today.
09:15Now most people do
09:16a zenithal highlight
09:18in a mixture of blacks
09:19and grays and whites
09:20and although
09:21this is an extremely good technique
09:22and I am a fan of it
09:24I'm more of a fan
09:25of multicoloured
09:26zenithal highlights.
09:28I feel that they sometimes
09:29create a more realistic
09:30shadow tone.
09:32Very rarely
09:33are shadows
09:34actually black
09:35they're usually a mixture
09:36of whatever colours
09:36are in the light
09:37and the objects themselves.
09:39So we're going to be
09:40undercoating in the dark brown.
09:41The next layer
09:42a slight angle
09:43catching the light
09:44but still hitting most
09:45of the miniature
09:46from above
09:47in an olive green
09:48and then ever so slightly more
09:50offset with a beige
09:51and then finally
09:52an off-white
09:53just to have that top
09:54catching the light
09:55zenith at the peak.
10:18so this layer
10:39will come down
10:40So we'll see you
11:40It's a good start.
11:40I'm quite happy with this.
11:51Now it's time to build the bases and just as I did with the miniatures, I'm basically
11:55picking up all the different bits and bits that I've got in my basin, brick-a-brack box,
12:00the brown matter.
12:02Matter?
12:03Where's it coming from?
12:04You can see on top of those bases are dried pieces of bark from the garden.
12:09Dried them out and picked up some nice big pieces and these usually work nicely for pieces
12:15of rock.
12:15I've got a few sort of pre-made jewels and rocks and everything like that.
12:18Just going to stick everything together and see what I can come up with and if I can get
12:22some nice shapes.
12:23Then I'll probably fill out what I need to in between with modelling putty, green stuff
12:28and possibly even a little bit of air-drying clay.
12:30I decided that the model here holding the blood goblet was going to be the main guy.
12:35Since he's already got one knee raised, it might look quite nice with a dynamic pose.
12:39So either just landing, possibly just taking off from a small rock formation.
12:44So I thought I'd build one and see how it looked.
13:15After various bits of remodelling and repositioning, I finally decided on a configuration that
13:20I quite liked and I just added a little bit of texture on with one of the rollers to give
13:24it a little bit more of a natural look and moving on to the next phase.
13:34I sealed the base with PVA glue all over, ready for priming and then moved on to affixing
13:40my beaky marine on top of his piece of rock and find a position that I liked, ready for
13:45doing the same.
13:59I put a pin in the bottom of the raised foot of the marine with the goblet so I can
14:03affix
14:03into the rock a little bit easier and drill the hole into the top of that rock but it wasn't
14:07quite contact in the way that I wanted to so I used a little bit of green stuff just to
14:11raise that area a tiny bit and make it look a little bit more natural and not that he's
14:16balancing on his tippy toes.
14:18It's now time to prime the bases and we're priming them in exactly the same way as we
14:21primed the miniatures, the same combination of paints and the same central highlight from
14:26that same angle.
15:13After a quick double check to make sure that everybody still fits on top I'm ready to start
15:18painting the bases.
15:19We're going to start with a very thinned down army paint the speed paint and this is
15:25a dark grey just to fill out that rock crevice details all over the bases and then we'll add
15:31a few bits and bobs afterwards.
15:47You may have noticed earlier in the video I was using a laser pen to test out a few fluorescent
15:51jewels that I had in different colours. I decided to go for the pinky red one being that these are
15:55blood angels and I thought that the colour glowed a little bit more nicely so I've added these with just
16:00a little bit of
16:01superglue and I'm currently dry brushing the raised areas on the rocks to add a tiny bit more detail.
16:06Finally I'm just sprucing up the bases with a few different colours of flock and some artificial flowers just to
16:12add a little bit of colour
16:13before painting the rims with a nice brown and then the bases are done.
16:21Now we're onto the meat and potatoes of it all. We're starting with the gold as it's going to be
16:26the main colour on both
16:27miniatures and what we're actually going to do with this is start with a deep bronze followed by a stippled
16:33highlight
16:33which is where you just basically sort of tease it all over in tiny little patches to give a sort
16:38of mottled effect
16:39but you work up very slowly in little layers until you've got more clean coverage over the miniature.
16:46So as I said we're going to start with a nice bronze and then we're going to highlight up to
16:50a mid-range gold
16:51and then finally a nice shining bright gold on the top of that one.
16:55After the first layer of bronze I'm using a Reikland flesh tone wash just into the recesses to add a
17:02little bit more depth
17:03before adding that first stippled gold layer and we'll do that on both miniatures.
17:25Just as a note I usually thin my paints because of the fact that we're using a zenithal highlight.
17:30It usually turns out a better result when you do what's commonly known as glazing
17:35which is a fancy way of saying thinning down your paints and doing several thin layers as opposed to one
17:40thick one
17:41which is usually good practice anyway and I generally speaking thin down my paints with a little bit of either
17:46army paint a quick shade medium or lay hole glaze medium and a few drops of water as well.
18:13Here I thought I'd treat you to a second angle and we're just watching the Reikland flesh shade going into
18:18those recesses nicely.
18:19It should give it a lot of nice depth.
18:39I'm just about to start stippling on that first gold layer now and as you may be able to see
18:44as it develops
18:45they're just tiny tiny little almost dotted brush stroke marks.
18:59I am breaking a little bit of a rule here. Every now and then you may notice that I am
19:02gripping my miniature.
19:04Even if I'm doing it gently it's still not best practice.
19:07Nowadays you can get one of those nice fancy overhead grips for your miniatures.
19:12But we haven't had any new technology in Yorkshire since the steam driven pumping engine.
19:16So I like to stick to bits of low tack wood and plastic.
19:19Every now and then I will grip my miniature but I am.
19:22I assure you I'll be very gentle with it.
20:24Please like and subscribe and hit that notification button.
20:27It would be extremely helpful.
20:29This is a brand new channel.
20:31I would like to try and grow it.
20:32So any help would be greatly appreciated.
20:34And if you can also share the channel with your friends and family, that would be superb as well.
20:40Thank you very much.
20:50I'm going to start with the red details.
20:52What we're going to do to start with is pick out all the individual little jewels and patches of embossed
20:58wings and things like that.
20:59All the little red details that we want.
21:01We're going to paint them pure white and then go over them with a Blood Angels red contrast paint.
21:07Finally, what we'll do later on is cover them with a little bit of a red glaze just to give
21:13it some depth.
21:14Then some technical hard coat to make them shine and glisten.
21:17And then pick out a few raised highlights with pure white just to make that little light glint at the
21:24end.
21:24But we'll see that much, much later on.
21:50This is a paint called Blood for the Blood God.
21:53And it stays sticky and gluey looking and fairly realistic when it comes to creating nice blood textures.
22:02So what we're going to do is we're going to fill the goblet and make it look like he's got
22:05blood overflowing from it.
22:07For the leather on the paint job, I actually started out by having a more traditional brown looking leather.
22:12And I changed my mind because it didn't contrast enough from the gold.
22:16So I decided to go for a nice sort of regal purple.
22:19And I'll be layering that up in a similar way to what I did with the gold.
22:23Starting from a dark, then a wash into the recesses, and then a second highlight followed by an edge highlight.
22:30It's important to note that it is okay to change your mind on your colour schemes even halfway through a
22:34paint job.
22:35There's nothing to stop repainting in certain parts of the model as long as you do it cleanly and carefully.
22:39I'm now going to paint some black areas on the models.
22:41The Beacon Marines gun and the swords.
22:43And then what we're going to do is we're going to try some nice glistening light effects with some speciality
22:48paints on both swords.
22:50All right.
23:04So
23:18we'll be right back.
23:25This is technical hard coat just to make the sword's surface appear shiny and it also makes
23:29the next paint glisten a little better once it's applied.
23:37So we're using two different varieties of Vallejo shifter paints for the edges of the
23:41swords which should give them a nice sort of interesting effect.
23:44They've got an iridescent quality to them so they look different colours in different
23:48lights and we're using an orange violet for the beaky marine which actually comes out a
23:52nice sort of almost a pink when it's applied and then for the goblet marine we're using a
23:57red gold which actually looks more of a greenish off yellow in most lights and then has a tint
24:06of red when you look at it in different angles so they should come out nice and what we'll
24:10do is we'll use a pastel yellow to pick out the details on the goblet marine and we'll
24:17use a pastel pink to pick out the details on the beaky marine and then finally stipple
24:22a little bit of black back into the recesses in the middle of the sword to create a nice
24:26sort of lightening effect and then finish off the tips with a pure white.
24:53So
24:59for the wings i decided to go for a little bit more of a colorful scheme rather than a pure
25:05white and i decided to do several thinned down bluish glazes on the end wingtips and a sort of
25:13mottled beige motif on the ruffly bits i have no idea i'm not an expert on birds i'm not an
25:21ornithologist in any way shape fashion or form i just wanted to color the wings uh not quite parrot
25:26but not quite pure dove uh so as i said several layers of thinned down night haunt contrast paint
25:34seraphim sepia and then what we're going to do is we're going to dry brush this with pure white i'm
25:40also going to go over it with a gray wash on the white areas and then i'm going to pick
25:44out some
25:44details with a little bit of a light beige then finally finish off with pure white just to pick
25:51out some details all along the edges a little bit of extra attention
26:29as previously mentioned i'm now going to pick out all the uh little pieces of jewelry and anything
26:35that needs a little bit of extra shine on it with some technical hard coat it really does give it
26:39that nice sort of dually glassy look that's needed for something that's supposed to be
26:44uh precious rocks or uh shiny surfaces of any kind sometimes it's good just to make things look wet
26:55i'm now adding a few thinned down layers of pure white to the cloaks just to make those raised edges
27:01uh pop a little bit better and give a better contrast between the shades that we created when we did
27:06multi-colored genital highlight at the beginning when we finally it's time for a tiny bit of red glaze
27:12a few more finishing touches and then we should be ready to glue these together
27:39i'd like to thank each and every one of you who stuck with me so far this has been a
27:42fun
27:43first episode for me i really look forward to doing more warhammer in the future although i will not be
27:48limiting myself to uh just citadel miniatures it's going to be a nice variety i think
27:52should the channel grow as i hope it will do i will get you guys to vote on what to
27:58do as projects
27:58we're going to be working more towards the direction of dioramas i i think uh although i will be doing
28:04individual showcase models a little bit like what we've done today from time to time so thank you
