00:00On the 9th of August 1943, Hitler summoned Boris to a stormy meeting at Rauschenberg,
00:06East Prussia. The Tsar asserted his stance once again not to send Bulgarian Jews to death camps
00:12in occupied Poland or Germany. While Bulgaria had declared a symbolic war on the distant United
00:17Kingdom and United States, the Tsar was not willing to do more than that, and at that meeting,
00:23Boris once again refused to get involved in the war against the Soviet Union,
00:26mainly because many ordinary Bulgarians had strong pro-Russian sentiments.
00:31On the 28th of August 1943, shortly after returning to Sofia from a meeting with Hitler,
00:37Boris III died of apparent heart failure. He was 49 years old.
00:43However, it is believed that Boris died from the same poison that had been allegedly found two years
00:49earlier in the post-mortem examination of the Greek Prime Minister, Ioannis Metaxas,
00:53a slow poison which takes weeks to do its work and which causes the appearance of blotches on the skin
00:58of the victim before death.
