00:02So, mid-air, there was an emergency announcement.
00:05So, they mentioned that they needed a medical doctor immediately on board.
00:09That's Dr. Loni Lireena, a critical care specialist from Manipur,
00:13on a Tokyo-to-Delhi flight that had a mid-air emergency nearly eight hours into the journey,
00:18with a young passenger struggling to breathe and the crew in panic.
00:22So, I went ahead and checked what was going on.
00:24There was many people, there was a crowd surrounding a young female.
00:28She was connected to oxygen on an oxygen mask and she was gasping for breath.
00:33She told Moh that she began checking the patient's pulse,
00:36asking for basic monitors and taking a quick history.
00:38One detail caught her attention, asthma from childhood.
00:42She asked the crew for medications to start treatment.
00:44I was actually nervous because, well, like I said, I work with emergencies daily in my workplace.
00:52But this was a whole different setup.
00:54They were all waiting for me to give the orders.
00:56They were waiting for me to do the decision-making.
00:59Suddenly, I was the only person responsible there.
01:02She told Moh that treatment began near the cabin crew seats,
01:05where the crew and a junior doctor passenger assisted her in stabilizing the patient within 30 minutes,
01:11allowing the flight to continue as planned.
01:13Medical emergencies mid-air happened in about one in 604 flights.
01:17This was one of those rare moments, handled 35,000 feet in the air.
01:23Long.
