00:00I am so curious what it's been like because some of the fans have really harsh opinions about this character
00:04and I can only imagine what it's been like for you to be on the receiving end. It's a very
00:09passionate fan base.
00:10It's a very passionate fan base. I mean, it's a lot of things. It's kind of scary and kind of
00:19really exciting and I think that it's a huge compliment to the writers and the story that we're trying to
00:26tell.
00:27It's been so interesting to see the journey along with the audience because I've sort of been sitting with episode
00:3213 Ogilvy the entire time and the questions that I started asking because of his role in the story, you
00:41know, which is essentially, I think, questions about empathy, like how do we determine who we give our empathy to,
00:49who is worthy of our empathy and are we able to empathize with people who we might brush off at
00:55first?
00:55And I think it's so interesting because part of the lesson of the story is, I think Ogilvy is somebody
01:02worthy of our empathy, even though he doesn't give it at first and to see people commit the sin that
01:09they hate him for against him, I think is like so interesting. You know what I mean? But also I
01:14can't blame them because I was in the same boat for a long time.
01:18Last season I spoke to the cast, they had mentioned that the writer's room is so meticulous and they create
01:23these story Bibles for each character's background, giving in details that you maybe don't see on screen because we're watching
01:29this one day in the life. Did you get one of those when you started? And was there anything in
01:33there that might surprise people about Ogilvy?
01:36Do you know what's so embarrassing, Megan?
01:38What?
01:40I, the Bible exists and I have not seen it. It's really bad. It's my fault. It was like, I
01:49asked around about backstory when I showed up on set and the series writers were like, oh, don't worry. They'll,
01:54they'll sit you down and, and tell you. And that moment never came. And, you know, it's my first time
01:59on a set like this. And so I was so afraid to ask people.
02:02And then like Irene being brave and brilliant as she is got hers, like, and told me over halfway through
02:08the season. And by the time I realized that I could do it, we were like starting episode 10 or
02:14something. And I'm like, I'm two thirds of the way through this thing. You know what I mean? It's too
02:18late to back up to be like, Hey, actually. So I was so embarrassed that I have not seen the
02:25character Bible, but I know that it exists. And I know there's more juice in there to be mined at
02:29some point.
02:29I talked to Shibana about sort of the fun rivalry between your characters. She talked about how it's something, it's,
02:35it's not quite a flirtation, but there's something kind of like fiery in terms of how they're trying to one
02:39up each other. What did you make of their tense sort of, you know, rivalry in the ED?
02:45Oh, I think with Javadi, Ogilvy is really excited by her and drawn to her and thinks that she's so
02:55brilliant. And, and that's sort of why he, he really enjoys the tĂȘte-Ă -tĂȘte that they have.
03:01I think it's like a fencing for him, you know, or ballet. There's something about the dance that's really thrilling
03:08and to have somebody with whom he can partake in that way.
03:12And then when later in the season, when they get to work together, I think he's like, Oh, I mess
03:16with you. You know what I mean?
03:18You're really cool and smart and fun to work with. And I'm grateful for that. So it's, it's, it's a
03:23fun journey that they have.
03:24And yeah, there is like, um, I don't, I don't want to, if I were to use the word attraction,
03:28I don't mean like romantically or physically or anything.
03:33I think it's more of like, um, we are cut from kindred cloth.
03:37So many moments over the season that are quite humbling for Ogilvy. Is there a certain moment that rocked him
03:42the most?
03:42Or is it sort of the attrition of all of these humbling moments that kind of shell-shocked him?
03:47I do think a degree of this is like the aggregate of disaster throughout the day.
03:52I think that he, well, when we see him in 13, I think he is sort of obliterated by the
04:01pit.
04:01I think it would have been really easy to fall into the temptation to give Ogilvy a redemption arc.
04:08And I think it's a lot more honest and brave that he was given what I think could more easily
04:15be called an arc of destruction.
04:16And not in that he is destroyed, but that the, uh, the person he was at the beginning of the
04:23day cannot continue in the world.
04:26You know, I think he's so, it's so juicy because we leave him at a crossroads, right?
04:32Where Whitaker is saying, please don't quit. I think you could be great at this.
04:36Come back tomorrow and quit then if you're really going to quit, but don't quit on this.
04:40I think he has a, a need in him to continue to be in emergency medicine.
04:45And he also feels that he cannot possibly do it in any way he has previously known.
04:50And anything else feels so foreign, foreign and, uh, terrifying that the easiest thing to do would be to quit.
04:59I think because he has allowed himself to connect with Mr. Green.
05:04And I think I'm after seeing, you know, it's really interesting that this happens after Robbie with Louis, after Howard
05:12and sort of in tandem with Kiki and everything.
05:15And McKay, how McKay has been whispering empathy into his ear for that, then for him to allow himself a
05:23single moment of connection with somebody who reminds him of his dad and for him to lose that patient.
05:30And not only that blame himself for that loss.
05:33I think, um, he's grieving Mr. Green, but I also think he's grieving his future, you know, the future that
05:40he had envisioned him for himself.
05:41I love that scene in 13 with you and Whitaker.
05:44I don't know if I can take another day like today.
05:49Primary care specialty sounds way better.
05:52Peds, maybe.
05:53I think you should sleep on it and I think you should at least wait till the morning to decide
05:57if you want to come back.
05:58What was it like working with Garen on that?
05:59Because I was like fist bumping at the end of that scene because it's like our little duckling has grown
06:05into a swath.
06:06I know, I know, I know.
06:08He's, well, he's so, um, beautiful.
06:12I always love working with Garen so much.
06:13He's such a beautiful actor.
06:15Um, it's so easy to just get lost in his baby blues.
06:19Uh, he's, he's so generous and giving and kind.
06:24It was great.
06:25It was, uh, as soon as I read the script, when I hit my inbox, I was like, oh, that's
06:30perfect.
06:31It had Jacobian elements that I was drawing on that I really loved.
06:35And I just sort of walked around with it in my heart for a few weeks and I didn't feel
06:40the need to do much more work than that because when you're opposite Garen Howell and you've got such good
06:44material, it just sort of comes freely.
06:46Totally shifting gears.
06:47I have to ask about the leg in the bag, which is like, like, visuals of the season.
06:52Yeah.
06:53I think we have a very different idea of normal.
06:56Now for everyone, I'm not sure it's healthy for anybody.
06:59Here's your leg.
07:03Tell me what it's like to hold a leg in a bag.
07:05Oh my God.
07:06Nauseating.
07:06I think it's, it's insane.
07:08First of all, the leg looks so real, but it feels kind of rubbery, but you can like feel bones
07:13in the toes.
07:14You know what I mean?
07:15So just taking it out and seeing the blood everywhere.
07:17Oh, it was so gross.
07:19So gross.
07:21You mentioned how you don't know what's next for Ogilvy.
07:24Have they, do you think you'll be back?
07:26Can you see a different version of him in season three?
07:29Um, or do you think that his story has been told and he's going to go into something a little
07:33bit more like family lettuce?
07:34Well, I have a bias here because I loved being on the pit.
07:37I love those people.
07:39And, um, I think that's amazing.
07:41I love being there and I love showing up to work every day.
07:43It made me so happy.
07:44Um, so it's, I selfishly am hoping that he continues on at PTMC in some capacity.
07:51I think that it could go either way, right?
07:56Like I think with in 13, we sort of see the death of his dream.
08:01And I think that we were seeing like the expiration of what could be like a decade of, um, like
08:09blunt desire.
08:11And I think the beautiful thing is that he has gone through a process that has allowed him to let
08:19go of a version of being in the world that has been holding him back.
08:23And I think it's so interesting that that can be so hard and painful sometimes.
08:28And also the necessary next step towards, um, I think, I think as his dream has died, he perhaps now
08:37has room for a calling.
08:39It'd be really interesting to see, uh, someone who has been an Ogilvy in the world because they are, there
08:45are Ogilvys in the world.
08:46So I'm told, um, become something that we would maybe more rather like to have as our doctor.
08:53Yeah.
08:54Like what I think if the show were to ask, what is the path forward for a person like Ogilvy?
08:59That's a story that I think is really interesting and telling.
