Benito Skinner loves fashion almost as much as he loves Mary Beth Barone. In this episode of ‘The Good Buy,’ the actor, writer, and social media phenomenon sits down with Harper’s BAZAAR to talk about the pieces that shaped his style— from the first Thom Browne shirt his brother gifted him in high school to the custom ERL jacket (featuring a hand-painted portrait of JFK) he wore to his show’s LA premiere. Watch here as the ‘Overcompensating’ star shares his obsession with Dario Vitale’s Versace, reflects on style inspirations like Robin Williams and A$AP Rocky, and reveals his lore as a “greeter” at Abercrombie & Fitch. Whether he's on-screen or off, Benito proves that real fashion isn’t just about dressing well, but the joy, playfulness, and confidence that comes from presenting as your truest self.

00:00Hi, I'm Lynette Nylander.
00:01And I'm Leah Chernikoff.
00:03And this is Harper's Bazaars, The Goodbye.
00:06Where we invite celebrities, designers,
00:08models, and tastemakers to talk shop.
00:10What they buy, where they got it, and why it matters.
00:16How has your week in shopping been?
00:18I've been doing some beauty purchases, actually.
00:21I realize I still have some makeup around from my wedding.
00:24When did you get married?
00:25Been over a decade.
00:26Okay.
00:27Yeah, so 10-year-old makeup that populates your...
00:30Yeah, it's not like I'm using it, but it was there.
00:33And I realized I had no skin makeup, no, just really basics.
00:39I got products from Say, you know that brand?
00:42I do know that brand.
00:43Really beautiful.
00:44Yeah, really beautiful.
00:44They have this dewy thing that goes, it's like a primer,
00:48but it goes under everything, and I really like it.
00:50I need all the plumping I can get.
00:52And then there's this lip stain from Violette FR.
00:56Violette FR, yeah.
00:58Violette FR, she's great.
00:58Yeah, it's a really, really nice deep berry, and you can put it on easily.
01:03And it just kind of fades in a beautiful way.
01:06And my two-and-a-half-year-old hid it, so I need to get a new one.
01:11But yeah, and you?
01:14I just got back from Paris Fashion Week, and it was amazing to see all the collections
01:20up close.
01:20And I think it was a really amazing season.
01:24There were so many beautiful things.
01:25Mm-hmm.
01:26You know, a lot of the conversation in the office has been around all of the brands and how they've
01:30really ignited the desire to go back and shop.
01:34You know, Chanel, obvious one that was incredible.
01:37Versace.
01:37Versace was from the one-and-done collection of Dario Vitale was amazing, and I'm so excited
01:45to see what happens next.
01:46But my goodbye brand of the week is Martine Rose, who is a friend, an inspiration, and
01:58I think one of the best designers working today.
02:02I just think that as I look to spring, her t-shirts, denim, the shoes, like all of it
02:08is just like so perfect.
02:10I love her.
02:11I love what the brand's about.
02:12Wow, it just reminds me of my, an elevated version of my London street, teenage, early
02:1920s vibe.
02:20Yeah.
02:20Martine Rose.
02:22An eternal goodbye.
02:29On this week's episode of The Pod, we have a true polymathic talent.
02:34He is a comedian, a writer, a producer, an actor, and broke onto the scene as a social
02:39media sensation.
02:40He is a podcasting pro.
02:41I hope we can hold our own here.
02:44His hilarious show Ride with his bestie and fellow comic Mary Beth Barone will get you
02:49through the most hellish New York or LA commute.
02:53And his show Overcompensating, the college-set comedy loosely based on his own life, has just
02:59been renewed for a second season.
03:00To top it all off, he is a fashion guy.
03:03You'll have spotted him in the front row at Tom Ford, Mugler, Dior, and he loves a vintage
03:08fratty.
03:09Please welcome to the podcast, Benito Skinner.
03:12Yay!
03:13I'm so happy.
03:15It's so weird to be here because I listen to you both so much, and you're my red light
03:19podcast.
03:20Oh, really?
03:21So I'll put a red light on.
03:22Oh, really?
03:22That touched!
03:22And I listen to my girls.
03:24Touched!
03:24It's chills.
03:26Oh, wow.
03:26So I feel like right now I'm in my safe.
03:27This is safe.
03:29Truly the biggest compliment.
03:30That's the best thing I've ever heard.
03:31Wow.
03:32How long do you red light for?
03:34So, actually, a makeup artist I work with, Nikki DeRoost, she was like, well, if you really
03:40want to go for it, there's this thing called the Saluma, and I said, oh, I want to go for
03:44it.
03:44I grabbed it, and I said, oh, I want to go.
03:46So it's kind of like it wraps around me, and I'm under there for about 30 minutes, and
03:50it's just like...
03:51Yeah, we're a 30-minute.
03:52It's peace.
03:52When I die, I want it to be in the coffin with me.
03:56What does red light, what does it do for you?
03:58Someone told me a long time, it helps with healing.
04:01Yes.
04:01I am prone to like rosacea, dermatitis, we're gonna talk about fashion, we're gonna get
04:06to it, but...
04:07You would never know.
04:08Look at that skin.
04:09Thank you so much.
04:09It's so beautiful.
04:10It's just...
04:11That is so sweet.
04:11I have full glam on.
04:14We're kind of glamazons today.
04:16You know what I mean?
04:17This is the first time they're seeing me in a podcast with glam on.
04:20It feels really good.
04:21I like this.
04:22Yeah.
04:23Talking about glam, let's start with what you're wearing today on the podcast, because
04:26I think it's really fitting to everything The Goodbye's about, and I mean, that's
04:31Dario Vitale's Versace.
04:33This is Dario Versace.
04:34I tried it on, they knew they had a sucker in me when I walked in the New York store.
04:39That collection rocked my world in ways that I've already pre-ordered things.
04:44Like, I have just...
04:45I was like, I'm not gonna buy things for a while because of this collection.
04:48It's so good.
04:49It's so good.
04:50It's such a rich world that...
04:52I don't know.
04:53He just tapped into this 80s kind of homoerotic, sexy Miami pool boy.
05:00I'm just like...
05:01It's incredible.
05:02I know.
05:02It was so incredible.
05:03It brought all the best elements of Gianni's Versace with it, but felt new and fresh and
05:10unexplored, and I'd never seen anything like it.
05:12Yeah.
05:12It did the thing where everyone was like, oh, yeah, this is what we've been missing.
05:18Yeah.
05:18It's 80s, but wearable, too.
05:19Like, even...
05:20Oh, God, the women's stuff, too.
05:22Like, the bejeweled kind of like vests and then that skirt that has like the prints of
05:26like 60s.
05:27The faces on it.
05:29Oh, cheers.
05:29I know.
05:30And the bra that with no back that Alex Consani wore down the runway.
05:33But I did, fun fact, I went into the store recently because, again, we're sisters.
05:38Of course.
05:38And who was holding court whilst her face was beamed onto the screen in the store?
05:43Alex Consani.
05:45Shopping away at the Versace store.
05:47You were there.
05:48I ran into her on that day.
05:49She's been there multiple times.
05:50Okay.
05:51Because I was like, wait.
05:52So we were all...
05:53This is...
05:53Wow.
05:54Did you go to the Versace store in Soho by any chance?
05:56They're great in there.
05:57Dolls.
05:57Can I do PSA?
05:58The best.
05:59Heaven.
05:59PSA for the essays?
06:01Yeah.
06:01PSA for the essays.
06:03Darlings.
06:04Darlings in there.
06:04Darlings in there.
06:05And they know how to sell a garment to a stupid gay guy.
06:09Whoa.
06:10One born every minute.
06:11Literally.
06:13This is great.
06:13It takes us to our first question, which is your shopping philosophy.
06:16I think for me, it's like stop thinking so much about what your personal style is.
06:20Yeah.
06:21And just like do what feels right.
06:23Like if the top feels good to you, that's it.
06:25And your personal style will reveal itself.
06:27Yeah.
06:27And then I think...
06:28Because I used to get so caught up in like what that was or how I would describe it.
06:33I'm like, I think it's like Americana sporty, but like a gay boy in the 80s who's like dad
06:39works in finite.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Like I had all these stories and then it's like, no, now I just, if I like the top, I
06:44buy it.
06:44Like I just try to...
06:46Yeah.
06:46Yeah.
06:46Yeah.
06:46You don't have to try to force it so much.
06:49No.
06:49You definitely don't have to try to force certain trends to work for you.
06:53Yeah.
06:53Like I can't do the ballet sneaker on me.
06:55It just looks weird.
06:56Let's talk about some times where you felt like you did that, that you like try to jam
07:01yourself into a trend.
07:02Yeah.
07:02There's a whole episode of overcompensating season two about me and skinny jeans.
07:06Okay.
07:07Because I, I was like, it's, I'm going to wear the rag and bone skinny jean in a one.
07:12I'm going to get the one.
07:14And they, I mean, it just painted on.
07:16It was shocking.
07:17And I had this pair, I saved up and I bought this pair of the APC petite standards.
07:22And so those are made for a French leg.
07:24Yeah.
07:24Mm-hmm.
07:25Um, not an Idaho leg.
07:27An American leg.
07:27An Idaho leg.
07:29An Idaho, an Idaho football leg.
07:31A sweet potato fed Idaho leg.
07:33It was, um, a shocking, shocking time.
07:36If those come back, I will never go near them again.
07:39Yeah.
07:39I don't think I will either.
07:41But you see them.
07:43The thing is you see them around like, you know, the spray tight elastic ones that guys
07:47wear.
07:47No sock.
07:48Knock it off with a no sock.
07:50That just.
07:50No socks is so.
07:51It is.
07:52It's a little bit like.
07:52Yes.
07:53It's the common project.
07:54No sock.
07:55And then the like Bonobos Chino that's so tight.
07:58And the wagon on some of these guys.
08:00Yeah.
08:01I'm like the Chino wagons.
08:03Dragging the wagon.
08:04I'm like, whoa.
08:05I'm like, you're wearing that thing with a Patagonia vest to work.
08:08I know.
08:09Watch where you put that thing.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Crazy.
08:11Crazy.
08:12But let's talk about some style inspirations.
08:14Cause I know you have some.
08:15Yeah.
08:16You're into the fashions.
08:17You're watching.
08:18You're seeing.
08:19One of my first ones, I remember seeing photos of Robin Williams on red carpets.
08:23And I was like, oh, that's so fun.
08:24I'm like, I saw the JPG like muscle shirt on him or he'd wear a lot of like Issey Miyake
08:31and he would like the Oakley sunglasses.
08:33I just thought I was like, oh, he's having fun.
08:35So I feel like that was one of the first ones.
08:37I love that.
08:38We've never had Robin Williams as a starlight.
08:40I know.
08:41And I love that.
08:42And we should check out his style more, but it's so fitting that a comedian is someone
08:46that you found.
08:47Yeah.
08:47And you found this shirt, right?
08:49Yeah.
08:49Oh, I have the shirt.
08:50Yeah.
08:51And Mary Beth got it for me after season one.
08:53That was like my rap gift.
08:54She knew that that was like my grail.
08:56Like we each have like a few of the things that were like, that's my one thing.
08:59And she found it for me and got it.
09:01And it just like, I don't know that shirt.
09:02It just, he, I think has been playful always.
09:05And I try to do that.
09:06Cause I think, you know, sometimes it's always this like conversation around like being taken seriously
09:11or if you want to like pivot in your career and all these things.
09:14And I think lately I'm just like, I don't know.
09:17I think I just want to do the thing that I want and wear the thing that I want.
09:20Like, why does everything need to be some kind of like serve?
09:23I love that because when you see, you know, you're really stepping out as a style star,
09:29all the brands are obsessed with you.
09:31You got to go to the Tom Ford show.
09:33I know.
09:33We were looking and like that suit looks so good on you.
09:37Thank you so much.
09:37He is just kind of a genius beyond that show, what he's done.
09:43I mean, I feel like who else could have done Tom Ford and it still feel like both him and
09:47Tom,
09:48like the world is so tight, but that leopard collar, blue shirt tie that walked down.
09:53I was like, that's my season two premiere look.
09:55I have to have it.
09:56And you know what it reminds me of?
09:58And I think about this too much because I'm, I'm just so gay.
10:02Um, sex in the city, the movie, you know, when it's a fashion show that makes her re dye her
10:07hair back.
10:08And like, she kind of gets out of her rut cause she goes to a fashion show.
10:11That's one of those ones where I was sitting there and like the beat was playing and I was like,
10:14fashion's alive.
10:15Yeah.
10:16I was like, culture's back.
10:17Like I just, you know, it was like-
10:19I mean, you, you've come to the right place for-
10:21Oh, I know.
10:21This is home.
10:22Okay.
10:22Yeah.
10:24Not only does fashion shows do that.
10:27I just came back from Paris as well.
10:28And we saw so many good things this season.
10:32Like it was, it's great when you see shows like that and you're affirmed that.
10:35Oh, okay.
10:36Like there are still great things happening.
10:38And we've been talking about this idea of desire, which like clearly that Dario collection did for you for a
10:43lot of people.
10:44Yeah.
10:45Um, but also just so many great collections that are inspiring that feeling.
10:49Celine.
10:49Girls at Chanel.
10:50You know what?
10:50I love women lining up actually like brings me such joy.
10:54It's like, yes, we have dogged y'all so much.
10:59Like go get-
11:01Is it Matsu Blaise?
11:02Matsu.
11:03Matsu.
11:04I'm like, go get those fucking animal print flats, girl.
11:07Yes.
11:07You deserve it.
11:07Spend your whole paycheck on it.
11:09Yes.
11:09Like light it up.
11:10I saw people fighting on TikTok about which like Chanel bag they like didn't like and liked.
11:15I was just like, God, this is, we need this.
11:18Yeah.
11:18Healing.
11:19Discourse is fun.
11:21Love it.
11:21Like I, I will, I will stand 10 toes down on, we have had a little bit of a drought.
11:26We've had a little bit of-
11:27Yeah.
11:27Like in fashion, feeling excited about things, feeling like we wanted to go out.
11:31Not just online, but to those boutiques.
11:34Line up.
11:35Yeah.
11:35Talk about it with your friend.
11:36The group chats are live.
11:37Okay.
11:38Wait.
11:38Okay.
11:38I have this thing and tell me if you agree.
11:40I was thinking about this on the way here and I was like, I wonder if they'll agree with
11:43me.
11:43But if I'm looking on a rack and I'm going this way and you come in front.
11:48Oh.
11:49Jail.
11:49Etiquette.
11:49I just find that to be, so it's like I own the rack until I'm done looking at it.
11:53Yeah.
11:53This is, this is, that could be my top.
11:57Right.
11:57And it's like jumping the cab.
11:58It's just crazy.
11:59And now I'm going at their pace.
12:01It's just feels, okay.
12:02A hundred percent.
12:03It's like if you jumped over someone, if you were in like a food buffet line, it's like,
12:07wait, I need to see, I need to survey.
12:10Is this my chicken?
12:11Is this my broccoli?
12:12Is this my rice?
12:12Yeah.
12:12You can't just come here.
12:14Can I have time with my kids?
12:15Yeah.
12:16That's right.
12:17And not that I am a believer in waiting outside of a boutique.
12:22I hate that.
12:23You know how this whole like, we'll let you in.
12:25Oh, post COVID.
12:26That, this thing I'm like, I don't, and also I don't need one person working to start with
12:30me.
12:32I don't need to just run.
12:33Yeah.
12:33The story's big.
12:34Although I do feel like all bets are off at a sample sale.
12:36That's right.
12:36That's when I realize, I remind myself we're animals at a sample sale.
12:40And it's okay.
12:40Are you still a sample sale goer?
12:42Oh yeah.
12:43At this level of fame?
12:45Don't even start.
12:46Are you kidding?
12:46Of course.
12:47The outlets at Cabazon outlets in Palm Springs.
12:50Okay.
12:51My friends, sometimes it's like if I meet someone and we haven't been close enough for too long,
12:55I don't let them see me shop for a while because it's been described as athletic, aggressive.
13:01Some people say it's like a completely different person.
13:04Like I have an alter ego.
13:05So.
13:05Okay.
13:05What happens?
13:06Describe.
13:07I just am like so fast and I know so fast and I'm ready to go and I'm like, I
13:11just will
13:12go done.
13:13No.
13:13And then I'll know.
13:15I just love researching the collections.
13:17I love, so I sometimes will know too much.
13:20And then you know it if you see it.
13:22Exactly.
13:22I mean, when I walk into a store, I can, I can shop with my eyes.
13:26You know how Tyra coined the term smize?
13:29I can shize.
13:30I can shop with my eyes.
13:31You can feel it.
13:32Right.
13:32The second you walk in the store and I'm like, I feel bad that I, I'm like a people pleaser.
13:36So I'll still be like, yeah, I'm just looking.
13:38And it's like, I know this is, you haven't put the new stuff out yet.
13:41All right.
13:42Well, we're talking about shopping from a very privileged position, but I want to take
13:46you all the way back to your first buy.
13:48What was the first buy that made you feel like, okay, this is something I really wanted
13:52and I saved up for it or I got it or something when you were a teenager that you wanted?
13:55Oh God.
13:56My brother and his now wife had gotten me a Tom Brown shirt when I was in high school
14:02and that like, he had like, you know, he had a, a job in finance and like, I don't know,
14:07it just like I, he knew how much I loved it and obviously it was so expensive and I still
14:11have the shirt.
14:11Like I would never part with it.
14:13I love that shirt.
14:14It still fits.
14:15No, it's like completely busting.
14:18Like every time I wear it, it's my, I call it my gay assistant audition shirt because
14:23I probably auditioned for 50 gay assistants a month in TV and film.
14:27So I'm like, that's my kind of like.
14:28To this day?
14:29Oh, I mean, I'll do it forever.
14:30I really think that like on my, on my deathbed, I'll still be able to be like, you have a
14:34call
14:35at four, fuck him.
14:36You know, like I'll just, I'll lock right back in.
14:38What is your regret buy?
14:41I know you have some.
14:42God, I have so many.
14:43It's so bad.
14:44It's one of those Raph Simmons jean shirts that were like massive.
14:49And to me, I was like, oh, I'm going to rock the fuck out of it.
14:52And it just kind of never clicked.
14:54Okay.
14:54But I, if it's Raph, I buy it.
14:57Like I, since I was like 12, Raph Simmons is like, I've, I think I've seen Dior in me
15:03probably like 10 times.
15:04I just think like he is, I'm obsessed.
15:07Yeah.
15:08So that shirt had to come home with me, but it should never be on me, I'd say.
15:12And that's amazing.
15:13I think Raph Simmons is like, he's God tier archive everything you bought.
15:17I mean, especially now he doesn't, he doesn't do his own line anymore.
15:20You know?
15:20And it's like great.
15:21I forgot to mention it.
15:22It's bubblegum pink as well.
15:24Like it is fully.
15:25Good detail.
15:26I think I wore it once.
15:27I wore it to, um, you know, I've lived many lives.
15:30I wore it to a makeup event meet and greet at Hudson Yards.
15:35I have to disclose.
15:36We've met before because I used to work at Glossier.
15:39I know.
15:40You know.
15:40Yes.
15:42We were obsessed.
15:42We were obsessed.
15:43You used to do that thing where you covered your face in.
15:45I did the, yeah.
15:46Oh, this is so crazy.
15:46I did, I, yeah, I covered my whole face in Vaseline.
15:49That's right.
15:49I was sobbing in the shower and my friends were trying to get it out because.
15:52I was wondering what, how, what happened after.
15:55Oil.
15:55It was like dish soap was the only thing that got it out.
15:57Oh my God.
15:57But I don't know.
15:58I had taken Accutane.
15:59So honestly at that time my face was like, you can put whatever you want.
16:02Like I could bathe in like hot oil.
16:04And it'd be like, thank you.
16:05Those clips are coming back to me as of today.
16:08Of me doing, didn't I come in and I talked about Superdue?
16:11Yeah.
16:11I totally remember that so vividly.
16:13I think I know what I'm wearing.
16:15Really?
16:15I think I could tell you.
16:16I don't know what you're wearing.
16:17I think I'm wearing a Supreme Western jacket.
16:19Oh, nice.
16:20And I love that jacket because Virgil had it.
16:22And I had to buy it.
16:23I miss him every day.
16:24I loved Virgil.
16:25Yeah.
16:25Incredible talent.
16:25That was like one of my favorite designers.
16:27I just thought he was so brilliant.
16:29But you know, Skinner, what is your repeat buy?
16:32Oh.
16:34Other than Dario's Versace, which-
16:36God, I have to stop.
16:37Is a very expensive repeat buy.
16:39Do you have to stop?
16:40Because again, one and done.
16:41You've got to collect.
16:42Yeah.
16:42I think there's one more.
16:44Okay, what is it?
16:45The fact that I know this.
16:45There's a-
16:47It's like a vacation.
16:48There's like a vacation.
16:50Sister!
16:52There's a vacation coming.
16:54I may have gotten a luck book and I did.
16:55They're like, don't worry.
16:56There's a little more-
16:58There is one thing.
16:58There's a little bit more juice to squeeze.
17:00There is one thing.
17:01They're doing like an ASIC loafer where it's like the stripes of the ASIC.
17:05And this is a collab that I'm like, I'm obsessed with because it's like being a little sporty and kind
17:09of gay.
17:09And I love when it's just like we're having fun with it.
17:11And that's kind of my repeat buy are like loafers.
17:14And then also the ERL like big puffy sneakers.
17:18Oh yeah.
17:18I can't visualize this to save my life.
17:20They almost have like a very like Zoomies 2010 vibe.
17:25Like Mall of America.
17:27But they're like, but make it fashion.
17:28I mean, Eli is like one of my favorite designers.
17:30It's like these kind of furry shoes.
17:32And sometimes I put them on and I feel like I'm a Bratz boyfriend.
17:35Remember those guys?
17:36Like my name's Dylan.
17:38But I just I love them.
17:39I wear them on set.
17:40I like and I'm kind of everyone on set is like, oh, Benny's got his hair and old shoes on.
17:44And I just love them.
17:46They look like I'm like I have just ankles and I'm popping them in.
17:49And, you know, it's like I'm a full doll.
17:50And just the tube little leg.
17:52And I just go boom.
17:53And I put in my pillowcases.
17:54And just like a clip on a little hat.
17:56Yeah.
17:57And flannels.
17:58ERL flannels.
17:59I always buy like six of season is bad.
18:02How did you meet Eli?
18:03We met because I I had seen his stuff at Dover and then I followed him and kept like DMing.
18:09And I was just like, I just love you.
18:10Like, I think this is so I think you're amazing.
18:12And then he did before, you know, all of the not great stuff.
18:17But he did a lot of Kanye's videos that I thought were I mean, the Tiana Taylor.
18:20I mean, yeah, that's like one of the best videos.
18:24Music videos of all time.
18:25Truly like shook me to my core.
18:27So I was just like I'm obsessed with him.
18:29And then he's more and more of his designs came out.
18:32And then it was this very beautiful kind of thing where he like always supported me.
18:37And, you know, it's like as you're coming up, people really won't dress you or send or like even if
18:42you're working with a stylist, they're kind of like, well, the budget is us buying the outfit, babe.
18:46Like, you know, and so he would always send.
18:48And then it was so sweet for my for the premiere of overcompensating.
18:53He made me a full custom look, which was really sweet.
18:56And can we talk about a little because it was really extraordinary.
18:59It was insane.
19:00It we so I've been working with Jake Samus since I did a shoot with you complete the name Vanity
19:06Fair.
19:06I just did the shoot and it was it was with Luke Guilford and it was it was like a
19:12shirtless football thing.
19:13And they put me in this like YSL pants and and like Bodie Nikes.
19:17And I met Jake Samus there and I was just like obsessed with him.
19:20And he had done like some, you know, personal styling for people, but I just loved it.
19:25He had like a full story of what he wanted to tell.
19:28And I said, like, I'm about to start doing press and like I think I'm wearing around like 90 things
19:33like I would love your help.
19:35Like I love shopping, but I also have to like promote a show.
19:38So would you want to like do this with me?
19:40And he was like, yes, girl.
19:42So we like immediately locked in and became like best friends.
19:46And then when we were thinking about the premiere, I was just like, it has to be ERL.
19:50And he was like, totally.
19:51And we had started doing polka dots and we had seen a few people do polka dots.
19:57We're like, OK, we want something different.
19:59And then I came to Eli and one day he just goes like, I'm seeing like JFK Junior for it.
20:05What if we like screen printed his face or his body as your body and then did like a pant?
20:10And I was like, totally.
20:12How do we also do a tie?
20:13And then he was like, wait, no, let's go JFK.
20:16And then Jake found this this reference of JFK.
20:20And then we worked together with Eli.
20:21And then they just had this silhouette that I think is so it's like these kind of billowing pleated pants
20:26that are this like delicious, like silky.
20:29I don't even know how to describe.
20:31I have no idea what the fabric is.
20:33And this kind of like, yeah, cotton silk top.
20:37And I went to their offices in Venice and they like presented it to me and it was insane.
20:41They had like hand painted the back of the other jacket.
20:46It was like, yeah, I'd like cried on the way home.
20:48It was just like it was the exactly what I wanted to wear.
20:50And I felt so good at it.
20:52And it really confused people like JFK was on the tie.
20:55But I'm like, it just felt so he was my senior quote in high school.
20:59And to me, it just felt so funny and like overly serious like a college student would be and kind
21:04of like a I think a nod to what we were doing, which is like it just felt so funny
21:08to wear JFK.
21:09And my show is about like me being gay and in the closet.
21:13Like it just I don't know.
21:13It just felt kind of dumb.
21:15You were overcompensating.
21:16Yeah.
21:17Being like, I'm a student.
21:18You know, it just felt so.
21:20You probably needed to feel like your absolute best.
21:23This is like your show.
21:24It's your life.
21:25Yeah.
21:25Pour yourself into it.
21:26And at the premiere, you just want to feel the best you possibly can.
21:29And fashion lets you do that, right?
21:32Yeah.
21:32And then it's like also, I love meaning.
21:34I'll assign meaning to anything.
21:36We're doing costumes right now for season two.
21:38And it's like just little things that I think are so like Eli being someone that had always supported me
21:43and then doing that for that day.
21:45And it feeling kind of like a like a friend and like family had done it.
21:48And I like love that.
21:49Yeah.
21:50Oh, my God.
21:50There's one shirt.
21:52I think if I ever found it in a store, I would just be like, all right, I have to
21:54get it.
21:55But I loved this one talking about Virgil.
21:57And then also A$AP Rocky was I mean, I'm like, I still think he is best dressed forever.
22:03He is the best dressed man in the life.
22:05And we have to just stop.
22:06It's him.
22:07Right.
22:08Knock it off.
22:09You know what?
22:10Jacob's fabulous.
22:11Like I haven't seen one look I didn't love, but just no one touches Pretty Flacco.
22:15No.
22:16And we have to just agree.
22:17There's a period on it and we have to.
22:19And he wore the ERL thing after he wore the JFK like a red version of the tie.
22:24I screamed for day.
22:26I was like, oh, my God, like we've worn similar things.
22:29But I was just like, this is I sent it to Jake.
22:31I was like, this is as good.
22:32You've basically been sharing clothes.
22:33Some would say, yeah, we have a shared closet, shared archive.
22:35That's right.
22:36Rihanna knows the look.
22:39But there's a, it's called The Impossible True Love shirt from Prada.
22:44Yeah.
22:45And it has like Marlon Brando and I think Cleopatra on it.
22:47And it's, isn't it?
22:48It might be Elizabeth Taylor.
22:50The Elizabeth Taylor still.
22:50Yeah.
22:50Of her as Cleopatra, but it's like painted or reimagined or somewhere.
22:54Okay.
22:54And it's like divine.
22:55It was so that era too.
22:57It's like 2018.
22:57It's so that era when Prada was so Moorish and Instagrammable and it was just divine.
23:03And you're saying that Rocky, who else has it?
23:06Oh, A$AP Rocky wore it.
23:07I, I know Virgil wore it.
23:09Yeah.
23:10Um, who else?
23:11Like it was just kind of the shirt.
23:14And you can't find that.
23:15I feel like I, I feel like I can find it.
23:17I found it.
23:17Are you going to find it?
23:18I found it once and it was like 10 grand.
23:19Yeah.
23:20And I was like, okay, you know, get me drunk and all.
23:23I was going to say, Gabe, your Dario Versace all stems up to the same amount.
23:29I didn't know we've really done.
23:30I'm like, whew.
23:31I'm not the person to find it, but I do know who the person is to find it.
23:34And that's Alexander Fury, the famed archivist, editor, but has the most incredible collection
23:40of everything Galliano, but also of Prada and always knows how to get it.
23:45It won't be purse friendly, but he will be able to find it.
23:49But that shirt exists somewhere.
23:51It is.
23:51And it's just, I don't know.
23:52It would like, I like have to, it's one of those things that I have to like earn in
23:56some way.
23:56Season two premiere?
23:57Yeah.
23:57Maybe something like that.
23:58It's like, I was thinking that of like, oh, maybe this is something, you know, cause it
24:02also feels like the era of the show in a way, you know, we kind of play with obviously that
24:07it's like about 10 years ago when we take place.
24:09So yeah.
24:10But I remember trying the shirt on with my brother in the store and being like, wow.
24:14Someday.
24:15If I could, I would.
24:17Well, I think that's really important to have things that you're striving for.
24:22Yeah.
24:22You know?
24:22Yeah.
24:23You have to always.
24:24Be wanting.
24:25Want something.
24:26What's here?
24:26It's the era of yearning.
24:28What is it right now?
24:28No, it is yearn fest.
24:29And season two is all yearn.
24:31I can't wait.
24:31That's all I do.
24:32That's all we're doing.
24:33Do I have a yearning?
24:35Do you have a yearn?
24:36I must do.
24:36Did you get anything from you Chanel?
24:39Wait, this is very funny.
24:41Hold hands.
24:42Okay.
24:43I'm going to translate why.
24:45Every editor in Paris, like they all swarmed the stores.
24:48Lynette was among them.
24:49Everybody is just like, that's my shoe.
24:51No, that's my shoe.
24:52Everyone's fighting for them.
24:54And one editor pulls out her camera and starts filming everyone just being like, what are
24:58you getting?
24:59What are you getting?
24:59And Lynette is like, this is the Hunger Games of fashion.
25:02We're all here.
25:02Yeah.
25:02And that clip went really viral.
25:04And now Lynette is like the girl from the Chanel store and she's feeling a type of way
25:09about it.
25:10I am a little.
25:10Talking about the Hunger Games?
25:12Yes.
25:13Because I was the cold.
25:14And I love the reference, by the way.
25:15I was the cold open.
25:17Oh, okay.
25:17Which was like, I think that placed me.
25:19Lead role.
25:20That's right.
25:21You're the lead.
25:22Let's reframe this.
25:23Yes.
25:23I was the lead.
25:25But yeah, it really framed me as I was like, as if I was this frothing at the mouth.
25:30I'll show you.
25:31It doesn't.
25:32With a credit card.
25:33It's the Hunger Games of fashion.
25:35It doesn't at all.
25:36You were calm.
25:37You were like, I like these shoes.
25:39Yeah.
25:39I feel like.
25:40Yeah.
25:40Anyway.
25:41Let's see what we can get.
25:42But yes, I did christen the moment.
25:44I blessed the moment with a few purchases.
25:46Is that wrong?
25:47No, sweetie.
25:48If we can't boost the economy, what is there to do?
25:51We have to boost.
25:52We have to go.
25:53And can I just say?
25:54That's what I say.
25:55I want my girls just to smile.
25:56It's like when all the girls were eating crumble cookies in their car.
25:59I'm like, let them.
26:01I'm like, this is so beautiful.
26:03I just.
26:04Let my girls go to Chanel and go frickin buck.
26:07What'd you buy?
26:08Tell me.
26:09Oh God.
26:10I feel exposed.
26:11Okay.
26:12I'll tell you everything I got at Versace if you do this.
26:14Yes.
26:14I bought the teal green croc shoes.
26:18With the black.
26:18Yes.
26:19Because I really looked and I really wanted to be logical and I was like, I don't have anything
26:24like that.
26:25That's fresh.
26:26I, my least favorite thing sometimes when people do in something like that is they're like,
26:30I got something I can do every day and I'm like, I don't think that's the collection
26:33you should do that in.
26:35Get that later when he's warmed up.
26:36Exactly.
26:37This is the first one.
26:38And they're always going to be there.
26:38Yeah.
26:38You're correct.
26:39Yeah.
26:40I would have done that other thing though because that's the kind of shopper I am.
26:43It's very practical.
26:45I think about things for a long time before I buy them.
26:47But you are both correct.
26:49Yeah.
26:49Yeah.
26:50I can see that.
26:51Chanel you can be campy.
26:53And I bought a bag.
26:54We're moving on.
26:54What bag?
26:56We'll block it.
26:57It's in there.
26:58It's out.
26:59It's a beautiful tote like black croc work bag and it's forever and I really consult
27:04it.
27:04I consult everyone on the phone.
27:06What color?
27:07Black.
27:08The black one.
27:08I didn't buy the teal one.
27:09I almost did.
27:10Shoe is where you can really play.
27:12Yes.
27:12Because a bag is like the price.
27:14It has to work.
27:15Everything.
27:16With everything.
27:16Yeah.
27:16Okay.
27:17Versace.
27:18Let's go.
27:18This.
27:19I got the we shot the next ride cover which is pretty disgusting.
27:24And it's I got one of the t-shirts that's just red.
27:26Yeah.
27:27With the thing because they I put it on and the darlings they're working the girls went
27:31nuts and I was like I know they're doing this to everyone but like this meant the world to me.
27:34No.
27:35You really do.
27:35This meant the world to me.
27:37You are made for this collection though.
27:39Thank you so much.
27:39We can all acknowledge.
27:41I think the history's in me.
27:43You know it's like I love I love South Beach.
27:45Yeah.
27:46Like let's be real.
27:47That's right.
27:47So I love that and then I got the Asics those and then I got a navy shirt like striped
27:54shirt with the brown tie that's kind of like 80 Z like this print on it and then I got
28:01a surprise for Mary Beth that I can't say for her special.
28:04Oh that's so nice.
28:05Because I just saw it and I was like I just am so proud of it.
28:08It's just crazy.
28:08I don't know.
28:09I feel like there's such a nice, there's a different energy that's happening.
28:10You guys have such a beautiful relationship.
28:12Yeah.
28:13We've got to get her on the podcast.
28:14Let's get her on the podcast next.
28:15Yeah.
28:15My publicist, everyone is always like Benny tried to get through an interview without talking
28:20about the OC and Mary Beth but I never can.
28:23Wait.
28:23Why haven't we talked about the OC?
28:25So this is funny because we had to.
28:28There is a piece from it that I am actively looking for every day to get for Mary Beth
28:34because we've talked about it so much but it's this Missoni dress that Misha Barton
28:37wears in season one on a yacht and there's lore behind it because Misha was allowed to
28:42keep it and she went out that night or like went out to an event in that dress and I
28:46keep
28:47trying to find it and I can't find it.
28:48We could find that.
28:49I love it.
28:49It's so good.
28:50A Missoni from what?
28:51It would be like a 2004 or something?
28:53Yeah, exactly.
28:54It would have been like 2004 and it was just like this little kind of purple.
28:57Oh.
28:58Yeah, we got to find that.
28:59We're going to find it.
29:00It's such.
29:00And her Chanel prom dress.
29:02That I don't think you can find anywhere.
29:04I think that's just, there was one of one.
29:05One of one.
29:06Talk about Misha Barton.
29:07She was a good, she looked good in Chanel.
29:08She was.
29:09She was a great Chanel girl.
29:11She was perfect.
29:11She was perfect.
29:12I mean, you got, I'm just realizing you were at the Chanel show where they played Just Dance
29:16and Olivia Dean was there.
29:18And I was next to a great friend of mine, Etta Jose.
29:21Oh, come on.
29:22Jose from Vanity Fair.
29:23We, when you heard it.
29:26Oh, that's.
29:27We just went.
29:28No, it's just.
29:29Both next to each other and we were like, and I went, that's high camp.
29:32No, it is.
29:33It's just like, just dance.
29:35Like who.
29:36That's amazing.
29:37Who isn't just reminded of the good times?
29:39I know.
29:39That's what I mean.
29:40It's like, get the joy.
29:41Like having fun and it being not so like, I don't know.
29:44It's nice also that those things not just hear like bono.
29:48Yeah.
29:48Like, you know, some like weird thing where you're like, okay, I do think I'm dissociating
29:52a little bit, but the clothes are gorgeous.
29:53And it was great.
29:54I was in a really amazing vantage point where I saw Olivia Dean.
29:57I saw Jenny.
29:58I saw.
30:00Lily and the leopard.
30:00There was Depp.
30:01And I saw Oprah.
30:02I can see them all dancing.
30:03And they were all dancing.
30:04Yeah.
30:04They were all like.
30:05Gracie was there too.
30:06Gracie.
30:07It's kind of just that.
30:08Yeah.
30:09That's great.
30:10Wow.
30:11We need asking our final question.
30:13I know.
30:14Why does it have to end?
30:15I know.
30:15This shouldn't end.
30:16I could talk to you both forever.
30:18What's your latest goodbye?
30:20My latest goodbye.
30:23And we have to say no Versace.
30:25No more Versace.
30:26I need to find one other piece.
30:29Let me think.
30:30I actually, I kind of just had a little haul that I did at the Society Archive in New York.
30:35Oh.
30:35I love these boys.
30:36Marcus.
30:37Yeah.
30:38And I just went and got a bunch of like vintage pieces.
30:41Like some old Armani.
30:43Like I love like vintage Armani.
30:45Like it was a flannel and some old Abercrombie.
30:47I was ultimately a greeter.
30:49So I'm embracing my life.
30:51Wow.
30:51You were a greeter at Abercrombie?
30:53I was.
30:53Sex work is work.
30:54Yes.
30:55I was a greeter.
30:56I was a greeter for one day.
30:57What did they make you say?
30:58Wasn't there a script?
30:59Yeah.
30:59We're coming into the store.
31:00Oh.
31:01I didn't have to say a thing.
31:02I was out front.
31:03Cause he was the whole.
31:03He was the whole.
31:04No.
31:04But you had to be dripping in that sense.
31:07Yes.
31:07Which I, I like the smell.
31:09Like I just, this is my thing.
31:11I think the smells kind of nice.
31:12It's like a musk.
31:14Okay.
31:14But if you smelled it in a way that's not as overpowering as it is in store,
31:19it is a really nice kind of cedar musk smell with a little B.O.
31:23Fabulous.
31:24Um, but I would be up front.
31:26Oil you, obviously.
31:28Shaved.
31:28Full dolphin.
31:30Full dolphin.
31:30Um, spiky hair.
31:31But it was one day.
31:32And then I was like, please, can I work in store?
31:34Like I, I did see people I knew today and like, I just can't live like this.
31:38Then they never put me on the thing again.
31:41Was this in D.C.?
31:41Yeah.
31:42I did one day.
31:42I'm from D.C.
31:43No way.
31:43You would see me on Wisconsin.
31:45Yes.
31:45During Christmas also, nipples hard as rocks.
31:48Wisconsin, M Street.
31:49Yeah.
31:49And my roommate had to take the photos of me.
31:51Hi, Lucas.
31:52I was like, you have to.
31:54And then they told me at the time, they're like, great.
31:57Chess should be pumped though.
31:58Do some pushups.
31:59So I had to do that.
32:00Can you believe we lived through this time?
32:02Like, we were also just.
32:04All for, let me say, $11.50.
32:06You know, it's like, I needed like 20 bucks for college.
32:09Oh my God.
32:09Yeah.
32:09And we were just like, that was just the way it was.
32:12Yeah.
32:12Glad we've moved on.
32:14Yeah.
32:14But I mean.
32:15But the quality of the like, early 90s or like 80s Abercrombie was so.
32:21It's good.
32:21In the silhouettes and stuff.
32:23Mm-hmm.
32:23Aside from everything else that's so diabolical.
32:27But that I'm like, so I got, I got kind of a cheeky, cheeky piece.
32:31Benito, this is, you're such a joy and you're so the embodiment of the podcast because
32:37you love shopping and you believe that fashion should be about fun and bringing you joy.
32:43And bringing you joy.
32:45And we can't wait to see all the things you're going to do.
32:47And we can't wait for season two.
32:48And you deserve all the flowers and all the success.
32:51So thank you for being here.
32:51Yes.
32:52Thank you for having me.
32:53This was Harper's Bazaars.
32:55The goodbye.
32:56Goodbye.
32:56Goodbye.
32:57Let's go to Versace.
32:58Goodbye.
32:58Let's go to Versace.
