Anne Hathaway may not rate her painting skills highly, but she’s fully embracing the challenge while painting herself as Andy Sachs and taking a trip down memory lane. In this episode of “Portrait Mode,” the Oscar-winning actress looks back on ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ 20 years later, reflects on returning for the sequel (plus reuniting with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt!), and touches on speculation around a Lady Gaga cameo. Here, our April cover star shares how her sense of style has evolved, reveals her dream co-star, and explains which of her characters she’s recognized for the most—hint: it’s not just Mia Thermopolis, Princess of Genovia.

00:00The first thought that I had once I stopped laughing.
00:02Oh no, I'm news.
00:05Hi, I'm Anne Hathaway and this is Portrait Mode with Harper's Bazaar.
00:13How would you rate your painting skills?
00:15How low does it go?
00:17No, I really, like, I don't have any skills.
00:20We're going to have you paint Andy Sachs in those iconic Chanel boots.
00:23Okay, we're just going to have fun.
00:30What would you be doing if you weren't an actress?
00:32I think the editing process is fascinating.
00:35I started producing a couple years ago and I'm finding that I just, you know, really love that.
00:40There's an element of caretaking involved.
00:43You have to listen really, really well.
00:45You have to be really good at moving the ball down the field.
00:48Yeah, I'm just having a great time with that.
00:53You are famously a diehard Knicks fan.
00:55Who's your MVP?
00:57It's a group effort.
00:58You know what?
00:58The support network of the Knicks.
01:00That's my MVP because I don't think they get enough credit for what it takes to be with someone who
01:06has a job that that's intense who's on the road.
01:10Sorry.
01:12It was funny.
01:14Do you have a crazy courtside story?
01:16I do have crazy courtside story.
01:18I remember being nine and, like, being like, wouldn't that just be the coolest thing?
01:21Like, a ball came towards you.
01:22You got to, like, catch it and then throw it back to a player if the player came towards you.
01:25So, anyway, that happened to me on my birthday.
01:28The player was OG.
01:30I focused on the ball, and so I completely missed him.
01:34He got the ball.
01:35But he also hit the popcorn that my son had put in front of us.
01:38And that went flying.
01:39My hands went to my son.
01:41OG and I, like, had a moment, like, everything okay.
01:43And then he turned around and played.
01:44And I'm so proud.
01:45My son was so calm.
01:48How did your experience shooting The Devil Wears Prada 2 differ from the original?
01:53So, we were filming in front of people, which was just amazing.
01:59And the energy was, I mean, it really, I hadn't experienced anything like that before in my life.
02:05And to really experience the, what felt like the excitement of so many people at the same time.
02:13And then to have it physically manifest in crowds just there.
02:17Just, you know, wanting to catch a glimpse of, I mean, let's face it.
02:21Wanting to catch a glimpse of Meryl.
02:22But just so happy to see all of us.
02:25It was unbelievable.
02:25And the hope is that we've made a film that will make people happy.
02:29You know, we certainly, that's what we tried to do.
02:34Oh, sorry.
02:37It just got so, anyway.
02:40The biggest problem is the paparazzi sometimes, like, getting a little, talking during takes or shouting things or swearing or
02:46doing stuff like that.
02:47But for the most part, you know, everybody kept it very cool.
02:51So, I don't know, it was a beautiful, it was beautiful.
02:53It was genuinely just a beautiful experience.
02:55Are there buttons?
02:57Oh.
02:58Oh, whoops.
02:59Okay.
03:00I'm so rolling with it.
03:02I don't.
03:02Okay, there are buttons.
03:05You had a moment on set where you tripped, but very gracefully caught yourself.
03:10That was the actual, literal last shot that we were shooting on the streets of New York.
03:14I just remember the first thought that I had once I stopped laughing, because it's just very funny to fall
03:19sometimes when you don't get, when you realize you're not hurt.
03:21I just went, oh, no, I'm news.
03:25I don't think you even dropped a bagel.
03:27Well, no, I clutched it for dear life, didn't I?
03:30What is it about the movie that stands the test of time?
03:33It's just such a joy bomb.
03:35And so, it's not the shake.
03:39When I think of Emily and Stanley and Meryl, the chemistry of the cast, and especially just the sheer joy
03:47of discovering them in those characters, they're each so individually iconic in the way they dance together.
03:54You know, getting to experience it 20 years later, I was reminded of that.
03:57Yeah, so I think it holds space in a lot of people's hearts, and you cannot, I mean, the script.
04:03The script is so funny and quotable.
04:06People just took it in their hearts, and they never really let it go.
04:09Why was Now the right time for a sequel?
04:11Oh, that's a great question.
04:13I have no idea.
04:14That's, like, above my spiritual, metaphysical pay grade.
04:18I don't know why Now was right.
04:19I never thought it would happen, because people have been asking me for a long time about whether or not
04:25I thought it was a possibility, and I just, I couldn't imagine it.
04:28I don't do hands.
04:31Are there any loose ends from the first film that get tied up in the second?
04:35Oh, uh, yes.
04:40Can you confirm or deny a Lady Gaga cameo?
04:43Who?
04:45Oh, I know her.
04:46She was so good in A Star is Born.
04:48Oh, my gosh.
04:49Can you believe that somebody can be so talented?
04:52It just blows one's mind.
04:56Which of your characters are you most often recognized for?
05:00I'd say it's a neck and neck between Princess Mia and Andy Sachs.
05:06And, like, I have different films that resonate with different audiences, like, by demographic.
05:12Like, boys are more likely to know me from Dark Knight Rises, The Girls of the Gazer, Princess Diaries, and
05:19Devil is Prada.
05:20Any update on The Princess Diaries 3?
05:22I want there to be an update on Princess Diaries 3, but not one I can give you today.
05:32You started your career out in theater.
05:34Yes.
05:35Which Broadway shows are an absolute must-see?
05:37Anything Stephen Sondheim touched would be my vote.
05:42He meant so much to me as a child.
05:44I literally broke our BHS copy of Into the Woods.
05:48I watched it so much.
05:52Oh, I made a choice.
05:55Talk about your style evolution from the beginning of your career to present day.
06:00Well, I don't know that I had any style when I began my career.
06:04You know, I got very lucky.
06:06A few incredibly talented designers and people in fashion kind of took me under their wing and gave me some
06:12beautiful moments and access to some extraordinary clothes that I got to make memories in and live my life in.
06:18But that doesn't mean that I necessarily knew what my style was.
06:21It just meant that I was, you know, a girl with a lucky Cinderella streak.
06:25Every day you wake up and you ask the question, what do I wear today?
06:27So many of us feel so unprepared for that question.
06:30The answer to that question can be this ongoing discovery and it can be a dance and it can be
06:34joyful.
06:35And so I'd say like that's kind of what my style is now is that it's kind of better understood
06:41and more joyful.
06:43Now it's time for the rapid round.
06:45One film you'll never get sick of.
06:47Moonstruck.
06:48Your go-to comfort watch.
06:50Blades of Glory.
06:51Favorite reality TV series.
06:53Would Great British Baking Show be a reality?
06:56Okay, then that one.
06:57What is your favorite film from your own filmography?
07:00Rachel Getting Married.
07:01Which character of yours are you most similar to?
07:04Maybe Celine Marchand from The Idea of You.
07:06Our lives are very different, but we have a similar sense of humor.
07:10So I think maybe, I don't know.
07:11One director you dream of working with.
07:14I mean, I've gotten to work with Christopher Nolan three times.
07:16So I'm not trying to like whatever, but like that, that is it.
07:20What is one film you wish you could have been cast in?
07:22If I could have like been a production assistant on any, on any movie just to like witness what was
07:26actually happening.
07:28I would have, oh my gosh, I would have done anything to be on an Audrey Hepburn film.
07:32Like to, I mean, maybe either My Fair Lady or Roman Holiday.
07:38Who is your dream co-star?
07:40Emily Blunt.
07:41Absolutely.
07:42Every time she will make your job so easy and every day will be a complete delight.
07:47Now it's time to reveal your painting.
07:49Ah.
07:50I had to go with sunglasses because that was the only option available.
07:55And I think I chose a different background color because I was really happy with the blue from the shoot
08:00today.
08:01So I interpreted that and I didn't realize until later that my foot was meant to kick back, but that's
08:06my painting.
08:09Thanks so much for watching and please be sure to check out my Harper's Bazaar cover, which is out now.
08:36Thanks so much for watching.
08:37Thanks so much for watching.
