00:00It's shade-throwing time on this trendy block
00:03as three color-obsessed neighbors duke it out for best in show.
00:08The judges are here to slice and dice
00:11while the contestants watch with their own knives out.
00:13There's a lot of chachkas.
00:15It's very unique to a certain person.
00:18Yes, weirdos.
00:19The mural on the wall.
00:20I'm personally not the biggest fan.
00:21It's just harsh.
00:23Bring it on, judges.
00:26Chantel and Dave are going all in on bold design,
00:29big energy, and zero regress.
00:32We like stuff.
00:33I'm not going to have one vase.
00:34I'm going to have 30.
00:34And it's sort of the epitome of kitschy 50s.
00:38Lionel and Catherine's killer instincts
00:40have them betting on their artsy abode.
00:42100% is the winner.
00:44He doesn't care about home decor.
00:46No, I don't.
00:47But I want to win.
00:49Anne's convinced her eclectic flair will reign supreme.
00:53I do like to be surrounded by things I like,
00:55but I prefer an uncluttered look.
00:59When the ego's subtle,
01:00one neighbor will serve up the sass
01:03and snag the coveted crown for top of the block.
01:07This hip neighborhood in the east end of town
01:10is where styles clash, flirt, and fight it out.
01:13Apartments and detached homes alike
01:15burst to life with every shade and shape imaginable.
01:19Armed with a full palette of colorful opinions
01:21are our judges, ready to pry, poke, and point out every flaw.
01:25Real estate agent Josh
01:27I'm here to see how people bring their function and design to life.
01:32Extrovert Jake
01:33I'm the neighbor on the block that everyone fears
01:35because I have strong opinions and I'm not afraid to share them.
01:38And design devotee Socha
01:40I like retro, I like vintage, you know.
01:42Anything vibrant, unique, creative.
01:46The rules of this competition are simple.
01:47As our judges tour the houses,
01:49they'll consider their design, functionality,
01:52and value added to the home.
01:53And one house will be crowned winner.
01:56You're excited to go into this creepy basement?
01:58It's going to only get creepier.
01:59Oh my gosh.
02:01Let the battle for block royalty begin.
02:07We live upstairs above my vintage furniture shop.
02:11I've been collecting vintage since high school, so...
02:14Isn't that curious?
02:14I've also been collecting vintage since high school.
02:17I'm the architecture, she's the furniture.
02:20Doodly-doo, put it together.
02:22Here we are.
02:23Dream team.
02:25Why are you polishing the sculpture?
02:27Would you rather I do something like vacuum?
02:29Yes, please.
02:30We're doing mid-century modern kitsch,
02:33so it's more atomic, jet set.
02:36Colourful turquoise and chartreuse and salmon.
02:39Middle America.
02:40It's the aesthetic that is just so happy.
02:43Put the good-looking fruit in the front
02:45and the bad-looking fruit in the back.
02:47Our apartment's secret weapon is our basement tiki bar.
02:50We belong to a tiki brotherhood,
02:51so why not build a headquarters in our basement?
02:54Wait, what?
02:55A tiki brotherhood?
02:56How do we sign up?
02:57Winning this competition would prove
02:59that it's kitsch done right.
03:03Chop, chop.
03:03All right.
03:04Maybe if I can inspire a couple of people
03:06to live dangerously,
03:07because if you're sitting in a drab interior,
03:10then maybe you have drab thoughts.
03:11We've all got a little freak in us.
03:13Let your freak flag fly.
03:16Freak your freak flag first.
03:17Let your freak flag fly.
03:18As the judges arrived,
03:20drooling at the chance to nitpick every last thing,
03:23Chantel and Dave grabbed front row seats to the scrutiny.
03:26Are you nervous?
03:27Uh, yes, I am.
03:29Too late to bag out now, Chantel.
03:32I'm ready.
03:33Wow.
03:35Whoa.
03:36My first reaction is that there's definitely a lot.
03:40Yeah.
03:41I'd rather be a bit too much than...
03:44Not enough.
03:45...than not enough.
03:45It feels like a museum of, like, vintage finds.
03:49Oh, my God.
03:50Look at the wall.
03:52Now that is a mural.
03:53Oh.
03:55There's a lot of tchotchkas.
03:59We like things.
04:00But somehow it's all in the same design element, right?
04:04Like, it's very, like, retro, 60s,
04:07so it's really working well together.
04:09Woo!
04:09Yay!
04:10Yay, they get it.
04:11And they have a bar,
04:12which kind of looks like a sail ship or something.
04:14I'm not feeling the boat bar.
04:16What?
04:17I like the fact that it's, like, half a boat,
04:19like, you know, the creative idea,
04:21but I feel like it could have been placed someplace else.
04:23There's no other room.
04:25In the kitchen?
04:26Come on.
04:27Wow.
04:29This is different.
04:31Yeah, I like the cutout.
04:32Do you think they did that themselves?
04:33Yes.
04:34In the Pee Wee Herman shape?
04:35Let's see what they think about that.
04:36It's a symmetrical hyperbolic paraboloid.
04:39It's a trapezoid.
04:39I like saying hyperbolic paraboloid.
04:40It's a trapezoid.
04:42Hyperbolic what?
04:43This is a house competition, not a geometry class.
04:48Oh, my God.
04:49This is amazing.
04:50What is this?
04:50What is this?
04:51Stepping into the kitchen is like stepping into another era.
04:55Right?
04:56And they didn't think that in the living room?
04:57Looks like their brains might be a little fried
05:00by the tchotchke overload.
05:01I want to live out my 60s housewife fantasy,
05:03put on a little apron and start cooking for you guys.
05:07Right on.
05:08Oh, my gosh.
05:09It's like a time capsuling here,
05:11even down to these ovens.
05:13Look at them.
05:14Don't open that at my break.
05:16They're from 1964.
05:17They made appliances way better back then.
05:20That oven and that stove will outlive
05:22anything that they bought today.
05:23Exactly.
05:24I'm personally a big cook,
05:25and there's not really much functioning kitchen spacing here.
05:29Are you kidding me?
05:30It doesn't really seem like maybe they cook all that much
05:34or are able to cook all that much in this kitchen?
05:38Honey, we have to cook at home.
05:41We can't afford to go out.
05:42It's crazy.
05:43What are they making?
05:44The same food as you guys.
05:46What Dave and Chantal have been able to do
05:47is there's very smart color blocking in here.
05:50It works very well together.
05:51It's not overwhelming,
05:52and I really love that about their design aesthetic.
05:58Okay, I'm excited.
05:59This looks so cool.
06:00You're excited to go in this creepy basement?
06:02Right.
06:02I am.
06:03It's going to only get creepier.
06:04Oh, my gosh.
06:06Oh!
06:12Can I fit down here?
06:14Oh, my gosh.
06:18Oh, I love it.
06:21It's like I stepped into Hawaii.
06:23Wow.
06:24I love everything about down here.
06:26There's red light.
06:27There's blue light.
06:28There's green light.
06:28There's every type of color,
06:29but for some reason,
06:30it just works so well.
06:32He's going cuckoo for coconuts over here.
06:34And there's two lava lamps.
06:37Oh, well, now it just ties the space together.
06:40They do.
06:41They love flowers.
06:42It's very unique to a certain type of person.
06:46Yes, weirdos.
06:47I think what Dave and Chantal have done really well,
06:49and I think it takes a discerning eye to do it,
06:51is to take all of these pieces and put it all together.
06:54See, I think it all goes together in the room that you're in.
06:58Everything down here is tiki-themed, island-themed.
07:01It all goes together.
07:02Everything in the kitchen is very 60s-themed.
07:04It has that blue teal.
07:06It all goes together.
07:07I'm just not sure if the house itself all goes together.
07:10I think they work together as a piece.
07:11Where could he come up with that?
07:12How does that make any sense?
07:14Maybe he was drinking rum behind the bar.
07:15I'm not sure.
07:16I really love it.
07:17I would love to meet Dave and Chantal.
07:19I feel like I could be friends with them.
07:20Overall, they were pretty positive.
07:22I was actually surprised they didn't run screaming.
07:25As the judges move on to the next house,
07:27let's see if opponents Lionel and Catherine
07:29bowl for the door or stick around
07:31as they try to gauge how they measure up.
07:34Wow.
07:35It's a lot of inhalations, eh,
07:37when people walk into our house like that.
07:39It's like information overload.
07:40So many of these vintage elements I really love
07:43and I want them, but it's maximalist.
07:46And for me, I like less stuff
07:49so that the things that we do have pop more.
07:52I was more of a minimalist,
07:54and then I met her,
07:56and she converted me into maximalist.
07:58I feel like this kitchen blows us out of the water.
08:03There's a lot that I like,
08:04but I think there's other parts to me
08:05that are just overkill.
08:07Nice place to visit,
08:08but I wouldn't want to live here.
08:09That's okay.
08:11Well, Lionel,
08:12let's see if your home is ready to strut its stuff.
08:15Our cute little semi-detached home,
08:18I do think of it as like a canvas
08:20that's always changing.
08:23I'm a mural artist.
08:24I've tried a lot of things that I don't like at all,
08:27and then you just paint over it
08:29or you just redo it.
08:30So I'm looking forward to hearing
08:33other people's opinions about our space.
08:36I won't be offended
08:38if they hate something.
08:40I will take that as a suggestion for the future.
08:45The house's secret weapon,
08:46probably it is the rainbow stairs.
08:50I think you should have said
08:50the secret weapon is me.
08:53Oh, wow.
08:53Just kidding.
08:54This house, 100% it's a winner.
08:57Tell me more.
08:58Well, because we're winners, first of all.
08:59That's where we ought to start.
09:01Grew up playing a variety of different sports, so...
09:04He doesn't care about home decor?
09:06No, I don't.
09:07But I want to win.
09:12Excited to see what this one's going to look like.
09:15All right, you ready?
09:16Okay, let's do this.
09:18Wow.
09:19Wow.
09:21Okay.
09:22Rainbow staircase.
09:24I love it.
09:25The color on the stairs probably isn't it.
09:26It's giving me pride,
09:27so I feel like it's not going out.
09:28It's like, yeah.
09:30We are officially on the scoreboard.
09:32Check.
09:33I like they tried to do some storage at the front.
09:36Yes.
09:36They also have all the storage under the benches here,
09:38which I actually do like.
09:40When you're working with such small sizes in the city,
09:42you don't get all the storage,
09:43so really trying to make use of it.
09:45I like the idea.
09:46Nice job.
09:48The mural on the wall.
09:49I'm personally not the biggest fan.
09:52Awkward, Josh.
09:52That's Catherine's work.
09:54Art is made for different people,
09:57and you can interpret it however you want,
10:00but in this case, I think it's just harsh.
10:03Yeah, I don't know.
10:04Everybody has different tastes,
10:05so, you know, 10 or 15 years ago,
10:08I think my feelings would have been really hurt,
10:10but at this point in my life,
10:12bring it on, judges.
10:13I like what I like.
10:15I think Lionel and Catherine
10:16are really using their inner child in this house.
10:21Playful.
10:21I think one of the things probably about them
10:23is that they're leaders and not followers.
10:25Exactly.
10:26Their choices doesn't scream
10:27like they're going shopping to a box store, right?
10:29Like they don't have live, laugh, love on their wall.
10:33Not all bad.
10:35Having an open concept like that is really great,
10:37but the couch is too big, the TV's too small,
10:40and even though the flow might work,
10:43I feel like the furniture doesn't,
10:44and there's no rugs.
10:45100% agree that we should have had a rug there.
10:48We had one.
10:49You took it out.
10:51Should we go to this bar?
10:53Please.
10:53I think so.
10:54So what's on the menu?
10:55What are we trying to go for today?
10:57You tell us.
10:59This probably used to previously be closed.
11:01Do you think they built this bar themselves,
11:03this woods giving me like home, Reno, DIY project?
11:06Yeah, I feel like they did.
11:08We did.
11:09Good job.
11:10Sherlock Holmes would be proud.
11:11Which is really nice to feel like
11:13you now have full flow into the front of the house,
11:16the living room.
11:16It almost makes the space seem bigger than it is.
11:20Okay, now we're talking.
11:21Like, this kitchen's a little bit more at my speed.
11:23It looks fairly new.
11:25Oh, wow.
11:25Is that washer and dryer?
11:27Yeah, in the kitchen.
11:28You can do your laundry while you're cooking.
11:30Because who doesn't like fabric softener
11:32with their stir fry?
11:33I don't know.
11:34I feel like this is something
11:35that should be in the basement.
11:37We used to have laundry in the basement,
11:38but we, it was very tight in there.
11:42Hated it.
11:46Okay.
11:47Oh, my gosh.
11:48You two, you will not believe what's up here.
11:55Oh!
11:57This is my favorite room.
11:59Oh, my gosh.
12:00Look at the horses on the wall.
12:02Aw.
12:05Imagine waking up to that.
12:07How cool would it be to be Winnie?
12:09The parents have such a, like, vast perspective
12:11when it comes to, like, art
12:12and, you know, Lionel being into sports.
12:14Right, I agree.
12:16Mom gets all the credit.
12:17This room almost feels like the heartbeat of the home.
12:20It has all the colors that we saw
12:21throughout the rest of the house.
12:22The yellows, the blues, the pinks.
12:25You almost now understand
12:26where the rest of it is coming from.
12:29Exactly.
12:30I think what they're instilling in Winnie
12:33is that freedom to be herself,
12:35be an individual, and to express.
12:37Which is so important.
12:38Okay.
12:38What do you see?
12:40I'm you, Jake.
12:41You guys are vibing.
12:42What the hell is going on here?
12:44I don't know about this whole house,
12:46but I think Winnie's room
12:47actually might help them win the whole thing.
12:49Well, then.
12:50Well, well, well.
12:52Started a little rough,
12:53but it definitely came around.
12:54I think we're still in the game.
12:56You think so?
12:56I think so.
12:57And speaking of being in the game,
12:59opponent Anne is here
13:00to do some snooping of her own.
13:04Interesting setup.
13:05Different to switch the dining room and living room.
13:09Wow.
13:10This is small.
13:11They had to accommodate the washer and dryer, I guess.
13:15Hmm.
13:15Anne doesn't like it at all,
13:17but that's okay.
13:19Oh, great mural.
13:21I'd have been happy with a room like this
13:22when I was a child.
13:24That was so sweet.
13:25But overall,
13:26I don't think this is my competition.
13:29We're not competition.
13:31Glad that Anne is not one of the judges.
13:35Oh, my God.
13:37Things are heating up on this block.
13:39Can Anne handle the sizzle?
13:40My design style is eclectic contemporary,
13:44so a mix of old and new.
13:45I like to have a neutral background
13:48and then providing colour and character
13:51through the artwork, figurines, books.
13:54My living room is the secret weapon of my house.
13:57For me, it's all about the furniture.
14:00Perfect.
14:01I think my house has a good chance to win
14:03because, frankly, I think it is nicely decorated.
14:06But I am anxious about being judged.
14:09I do love my home,
14:11and it's a bit frightening
14:13to think that somebody else may come in
14:15and hate it
14:16and think,
14:18oh, my God, what was she thinking?
14:20Okay, my friends,
14:20to the next house.
14:21Okay.
14:22Oh, wow.
14:23I love the pop of red on the porch.
14:26Okay.
14:28Oh.
14:29I absolutely love
14:31the antique old flooring.
14:33I think it's my favourite.
14:35Wow, I really like the open space
14:37of this first floor.
14:39I love the colour.
14:40Like, the blue couch,
14:42the yellow chair,
14:43and it ties together with the lamp.
14:45Really, really great selection of furniture.
14:48And it's suede.
14:49You can never go wrong with suede.
14:51It's so fancy.
14:52Which is actually velvet.
14:54Ah, yeah.
14:55It's nothing like a mid-competition fabric correction
14:57to keep things spicy.
14:58Does something about the space, though,
15:00feel a little bit small?
15:02I feel like Anne has kept everything
15:04really low in terms of the artwork,
15:06and I feel like it's not capturing
15:08the nice high ceilings,
15:10because they are really nice and high,
15:11and there's no molding.
15:12Well, maybe she just can't reach it.
15:14There's a couple ladders.
15:15Maybe she's scared of the ladder.
15:17I don't know.
15:18I don't think it's too low.
15:20I always thought art was supposed
15:22to be hung at eye level.
15:23Maybe I'm just short.
15:24It's nice.
15:28It does look sparse.
15:30Oh, Anne, don't get too down on yourself now.
15:32Wait to hear what the judges have to say,
15:34and then get down on yourself.
15:36Anne's giving me really, like, mid-century modern,
15:38which I really actually like it,
15:39but I do think that the woods
15:41are kind of bleeding into each other.
15:43You have wood flooring, wood cardenza,
15:45wood bookcase, and wood table.
15:46Maybe she just likes wood.
15:48I feel like I'm seeing three different tones.
15:49Like, this is a different tone,
15:51that's a different tone,
15:52the floor is a different tone.
15:53It's very clean,
15:54but it's just lacking a little bit of life.
15:57Putting maybe an accent wall
15:59with a change of color.
16:01Fair enough.
16:03Oh.
16:04Wow.
16:05Okay.
16:06Okay.
16:07Oh, my God.
16:07The thing I like the most about this kitchen,
16:09and I will give props,
16:10is that it's giving me, like, a diner vibe.
16:12It's a really bold choice with the flooring.
16:15It's like, I want to have brunch here with Anne.
16:17The black and white floor
16:17is one of the things I like most about the kitchen.
16:20I feel like it's a kitchen
16:21that anyone could really love.
16:22She has a newer kitchen with all the right bones,
16:25like the gas range
16:26and the stainless steel appliances.
16:28Great value add.
16:29I love that.
16:30When you're living in the city
16:31and you have a big separate kitchen
16:33with, like, two separate islands
16:34and an area to eat,
16:36chef's kiss.
16:38Okay, I think we're heading into the den.
16:40Uh, what is a den?
16:41What is a den?
16:43Clearly, in our case,
16:44it's a TV room.
16:45This is cute.
16:47I think this room
16:48might be the winner for me in the house.
16:49You get the natural light
16:50and it has that pop of colour.
16:53It's nice that we got to come up here.
16:54I feel like there's a little bit more
16:56of Anne's personality up here.
16:58There's this really cute leopard print lampshade.
17:02I really like her taste.
17:04I just want Anne to push
17:06just a little bit further.
17:09Raph's opponents
17:09and polar opposites Dave and Seansell
17:11can offer up some unsolicited advice
17:13on how to do that.
17:15I find it's a little stark.
17:16What's stark?
17:17The space.
17:18I mean, it's comfortable
17:18and there's some more.
17:20You think this is stark?
17:21Well, you live in Adventureland.
17:22I live in a kaleidoscope.
17:25Oh, look, we're seeing some UK.
17:27We're seeing some UK
17:28and we're seeing the same colour scheme
17:30that's downstairs
17:30but a little bit more muted.
17:32So even though this house
17:33has, like, touches of whimsy,
17:35the colourway is nice and solid,
17:37it's very comfortable,
17:39it feels very safe.
17:41Is safe good?
17:42Yes, definitely.
17:44You can go too far with whimsy.
17:47I think it's more important
17:48to take risks and have fun.
17:50I think we've got it beat.
17:52I don't.
17:53I think my house
17:54is definitely a contender.
17:56Judges, design, function
17:58and added value
17:59are your metrics.
18:00Time to pick which house
18:01is top of this block.
18:03This is going to be
18:04a very, very tough decision.
18:06So, first home we went to?
18:08Chantel and Dave's.
18:09It almost felt like
18:10a little bit of a fever dream
18:11when you walk into it,
18:12but I loved it.
18:13I thought they did
18:14such a great job
18:15at blending the colours
18:16because there was a lot
18:17of bold colour choices,
18:19which can go really bad
18:20when it comes to design
18:21and in such a small space.
18:23But when it came
18:23to going into their kitchen,
18:25I was like,
18:25do they even cook in here?
18:26I was like,
18:26some of these appliances
18:27are from the 19th century.
18:30The functionality as well,
18:31just like when you're
18:32walking through the place,
18:33just felt super cluttered.
18:35I think out of all
18:36the places to be cluttered,
18:37the Tiki Bar
18:38would make the most sense,
18:39but it provided a sense
18:40of being cosy and warm
18:42and inviting.
18:43The little lights
18:44and everything,
18:44it gave like a very relaxing vibe.
18:47Lionel and Catherine's house,
18:49what are your thoughts?
18:50It had the nice open concept.
18:52They did that breakfast nook
18:53which sort of adds
18:54to the flow of the house.
18:55Yeah, that was nice.
18:55I will also say,
18:57like I found going
18:58through the kitchen,
18:58the space worked.
18:59I do agree with that.
19:00Like everything was functional.
19:01However, I did not like
19:04the fact that they had
19:05their laundry set up
19:07in the kitchen.
19:07That was a no-no for me.
19:09For me, it was all
19:10about authenticity.
19:11I could tell that
19:12they lived there
19:12and that their personality
19:14spoke through
19:14their design choices.
19:16I love the colour
19:17going up the stairs
19:18and Winnie's room.
19:19That was the highlight
19:20of the house for me.
19:20It really was.
19:22Let's talk about
19:23Anne's place now.
19:23I really love the decor
19:25and the design
19:26and everything.
19:27It was just very classy
19:29and like bougie.
19:30I can relate to that.
19:32Of course you have.
19:33No?
19:33I feel like despite
19:35all of that,
19:35the walls was a big no for me.
19:37I agree with you
19:38on that point.
19:39The walls were so grey
19:40and bare.
19:41Just wanted Anne
19:42to go that little bit further.
19:44Of the three houses
19:45we saw,
19:45I do feel like
19:46Anne's house
19:47had the most value add.
19:49The kitchen,
19:50such a good addition
19:51with like the gas range
19:52and like the big
19:53stainless steel appliances.
19:55And then going upstairs,
19:56it was a really
19:57beautiful space.
19:58It just gave that warmth
19:59that was lacking
20:00on the main floor.
20:02I think I know
20:03where I'm leaning towards.
20:06So do I actually.
20:07Yeah, so I'm gonna vote for...
20:17Who's house
20:17will be crowned?
20:19Top of the block.
20:20Well, Miss Fidgety,
20:21we're nervous.
20:22Judges will think,
20:23okay, these guys are too weird.
20:24So let's pick, you know,
20:26the lukewarm oatmeal
20:27because it doesn't hurt
20:28your palate.
20:29Both of us
20:30are very competitive.
20:31You know,
20:31we want to win.
20:32But with the judges,
20:34there were some highs
20:34and some lows.
20:36Sometimes you got to rally.
20:37Play 27 outs.
20:39The judges made
20:40interesting comments
20:41about getting more colour
20:42in my dining room
20:43and certainly have given me
20:44food for thought.
20:46The verdict is in.
20:47I think we're gonna win.
20:48I hope we win.
20:49We're gonna win.
20:50Fingers crossed.
20:52I think we really have a chance.
20:54I'm feeling
20:55a little less confident.
21:00I'm excited to spread the news.
21:03Come on out.
21:04Oh my God.
21:05Hello.
21:06Hello.
21:07David.
21:08Chantel.
21:09You won.
21:10What?
21:11You guys did a fantastic job
21:13of blending everything together
21:15and staying true to who you are
21:17and making it feel like a home.
21:18So congratulations.
21:20That's very validating.
21:21It's proof that you can live
21:22with colour
21:22and not be afraid
21:24to show who you are
21:25and not be afraid
21:25to live it every day.
21:27Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
21:31Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da
21:32-da.
21:33Dave and Chantel
21:34really took a big swing
21:36in terms of their design.
21:37They're very creative,
21:39very vibrant.
21:40You could tell
21:40that they incorporated
21:41a lot of their personality in regards right mega dose of personality and it landed because they
21:47know how to put the pieces together and then the whole tiki room it provided a lot of comfort
21:52dave and chantelle's place is just undeniable winning would have been the icing on the cake
22:00but at the end of the day i'm very happy living here and that's really what matters the most
22:05we didn't win because there was no area rug i said we should bring the area rug up from the
22:10basement and he said absolutely not so i think it's basically your fault i'll take down i'll take
22:16the l on this one our home is who we are we're just the weirdos in this city we're flaming
22:22hot oatmeal
22:26love it
