The only problem? It never actually happened.

Join us as we explore why Apple has inspired more myths than almost any other company, how the “Think Different” campaign shaped its legendary status, and why—even when the stories are fiction—Apple remains seemingly “Teflon” to criticism.

00:04Hello, and welcome to Global Pulse News. In his new book, Apple, The First 50 Years,
00:12author David Pogue recounts a famous piece of Apple lore involving the late Steve Jobs and
00:19the iPod. According to the anecdote, when engineers presented Jobs with the smallest
00:25possible prototype, he dropped it into a fish tank. When air bubbles rose, Jobs declared,
00:32make it smaller, proving there was still empty space inside. The only problem? Pogue notes it
00:39never actually happened. It is just one of many myths surrounding the tech giant. For decades,
00:46Apple has cultivated an aura of countercultural revolution, reinforced by its iconic 1997
00:53Think Different campaign. Tech journalist Jason Snell argues that whether these stories are true
01:00is, in some ways, irrelevant. What matters, he says, is that they reflect a company which has
01:07long positioned itself as a force for creativity and for change. Computer History Museum curator
01:14Hansen Uxsu adds that this renegade spirit was baked into Apple's DNA from the very start,
01:20from flying a pirate flag over its early headquarters to democratizing technology with
01:26the Macintosh. That legacy continued with game changers like the iPod, the iPhone, and the App Store.
01:34However, this connectivity came with consequences. Pogue notes that the rise of streaming in smartphones
01:41correlates with increased screen time and declining mental health among young people.
01:46A concern CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged, stating he opposes mindless scrolling. As Apple celebrates its
01:5450th anniversary, its corporate reality has shifted. Despite promoting revolutionary ideals,
02:01the company now faces criticism for its CEO's engagement with the Trump administration.
02:06Yet, according to Vulture TV critic Roxana Haddaddy, Apple often remains Teflon, largely immune to the backlash
02:15that sinks its competitors.
