JP and BMitch react to the Commanders' brass discussing Jayden Daniels heading into his third season in the NFL.
Transcript
00:00Do you remember, I guess it was a couple weeks ago
00:02when Jaden played in the flag football game?
00:04Yeah.
00:06And some people, I have a rule in my life.
00:09I try not to get pre-mad about something, right?
00:13Like, I've had this discussion with my wife.
00:15Like, oh, my college buddies are coming to town.
00:18We're going out Saturday night.
00:20And occasionally, she'll get pre-mad at me
00:23because she knows I'm going to come home and make a mess
00:26and wake the kids up or whatever, right?
00:28And I'm like, yo, don't be pre-mad.
00:31Let's just see how it goes.
00:33And then depending how it goes.
00:34And then you're going to do exactly what she said?
00:36Perhaps.
00:36It's happened before.
00:37You have to learn how to not do it, Jay.
00:39But my point is, I think with the Jaden Daniels flag football stuff,
00:44people got pre-mad about it, right?
00:47They were like, oh, my God, what if something goes wrong?
00:50Well, it didn't.
00:51But I did find it really interesting.
00:55When we were talking to Josh Harris, the commander's owner,
00:59on Monday, I believe, right?
01:01Today's Wednesday.
01:02My days are kind of screwed up.
01:05Josh Harris just got asked about Jaden.
01:08I believe it was Ben Standing asked the question.
01:09It was a very generic, you know,
01:12how do you feel about Jaden going into year three?
01:15And Harris, unprompted, just brought up the flag football thing.
01:19Here's the commander's owner talking to Jaden Daniels.
01:21Yeah, look, I think that Jaden, you know,
01:26we have a lot of confidence in Jaden.
01:27I spoke with him yesterday.
01:29I keep in touch with him.
01:30He's working super hard in the offseason.
01:32I got to say, you know, when he lined up in flag football,
01:36I'm not going to say I wasn't nervous,
01:37but, you know, glad that we got through that one.
01:41And, you know, he's, you know, our guy.
01:44You know, we have a lot of faith in him.
01:46And so he's hard at work learning and implementing, you know,
01:53what's going to change with, you know, David Blau.
01:56And so, you know, listen, moving forward and excited about next season.
02:00And, you know, sometimes injuries happen and other things happen.
02:03And the good news about Jaden is that he's right back at work.
02:07And I have a lot of confidence in him.
02:11So the totality of that answer, I think, was dead on, right?
02:17We have confidence in him.
02:18He's our guy.
02:19We're really excited.
02:19We're all getting ready for another season.
02:23I thought it was telling when he was like, man,
02:25I was pretty nervous watching him play flag football.
02:27I think that's the appropriate reaction.
02:29I think because at least for me.
02:31Remember, he's the one cutting the check.
02:33Right.
02:34I can understand him being nervous.
02:35But all these people with some of their opinions and their mindsets
02:39and their vitriol, chill the hell out.
02:42I certainly agree with the vitriol.
02:46Like, for me, and what I said the next day was watching it,
02:51one, it made me realize how little I know about flag football, right?
02:55Like, that's a different sport entirely.
02:59Did you hear what Sean Payton said?
03:01So Sean Payton was one of the coaches in one of the, like, you know,
03:05they had, like, three teams or whatever?
03:08Payton afterwards, yesterday, I think, said,
03:11I don't think a single NFL player is making that U.S. flag football roster.
03:16It's possible.
03:17It's a different sport.
03:18It's a different sport, and you play both ways,
03:20and the rules are completely different.
03:22And just think about it.
03:24Like I've said before, when you get into difficult situations
03:28or crucial situations, you can only resort back to what you know.
03:33So those guys, they're not going to be able to learn those rules
03:36and stick to them while still playing football.
03:39You get what I'm saying?
03:40Or they're going to get in their real job and get hurt
03:42because they're going to think they're doing something in flag football.
03:45Yeah, it's a unique situation.
03:47But I just think, I think Harris was kind of most of the fan base
03:53that didn't overreact, wasn't super upset or felt one way or the other.
03:58But, like, damn, when the television was on and Jaden was running routes,
04:04it got me a little nervous, right?
04:05I think Harris is just telling the truth.
04:07And it was interesting because it was unprompted to bring it up.
04:12He knows what people were talking about and what people, the questions and stuff.
04:16Sure, but honestly, I wouldn't have thought to ask him about it.
04:19Like I asked him plenty of questions.
04:21But I'm just saying, like, it's not, like, Josh, if you talk with Josh,
04:26you talk with Mitchell, you talk with Mark,
04:29they watch and listen to everything around this team.
04:32They know the topics.
04:34They know what people are concerned about, worried about.
04:36And probably, like, if they ask me anything about Jaden,
04:38I'm going to let them know I was nervous, too.
04:40You know what I'm saying?
04:41Right.
04:41I don't think it's like, like, Dan probably would have never knew
04:46what the hell was going on.
04:47Unless somebody told him right before he got there.
04:49What?
04:49They do.
04:51The sycophants that Snyder surrounded him with kept him away from everything
04:56because they didn't want him to be aware of everything
04:58because they wanted to keep their control of the bubble.
05:01You know what I mean?
05:02I can confirm, Brian, that members of the Harris family enjoy our radio program.
05:09Cool.
05:09Take that for what it's worth.
05:11So, but once Harris talked about it,
05:13then it was kind of something to follow up with Adam Peters about.
05:17And I thought AP kind of – I appreciate the vein, the avenue with which the front office
05:26and ownership talked about Jaden exercising his right to make some cash
05:31and play a flag football game in the offseason.
05:34Adam Peters talking flag football with Jaden.
05:36I try not to watch too much of it, but we talked about this really for, I gosh, when did
05:43it start?
05:43When the thing came out maybe in September.
05:45So we've had an open dialogue with Jaden about that throughout.
05:48And so obviously you're concerned, I think, and all of us probably are concerned about that.
05:53Not just me, probably me the most.
05:56But understanding that it's something that was important to him
05:59and, you know, just talking about the risk and the risk versus reward and all that.
06:04And then he's got to make the decision on his own in terms of that.
06:07But we supported whatever he wanted to do.
06:09And, you know, the thing about Jaden, he loves football.
06:12He loves playing.
06:13He loves competing.
06:15And so, you know, I think that was something that was important to him.
06:19So I'm glad he did it.
06:19I'm glad he came out.
06:23Like, totally reasonable.
06:25I think we can have a reasonable conversation without being mad about it
06:31and just kind of moving forward.
06:32But people that are still mad about it, get life.
06:36I can't imagine people are still mad.
06:40That look says a lot.
06:44So that was one little thing that I wanted to make sure we circled back to
06:47because it's not like Jaden acted on his own volition
06:51and didn't make the organization aware and blah, blah, blah.
06:54Right?
06:55Like, everybody knew this was happening.
06:56They were running promos of it for months.
06:58They were supposed to go to Saudi Arabia to do it.
07:01You know what I mean?
07:02Like, this was not a surprise.
07:04No, it wasn't.
07:05Surprise, guys.
07:06I'm playing flag football.
07:07There were also, like, 15 other NFL players there and your boy, Mr. Paul.
07:12More than 15.
07:13I think current players, right?
07:15You had a lot of them, man.
07:17It might have been more.
07:18Yeah.
07:19It was two teams.
07:22It was two NFL teams.
07:24Yeah, two NFL teams.
07:25Non-flag team.
07:26Yeah.
07:26But they only play five at a time.
07:29Right?
07:29Isn't it five, dude?
07:30Maybe it's seven, six?
07:32I thought it would be seven, but it's fine.
07:33I don't know.
07:34It's not seven.
07:36There's quarterback, sometimes two quarterbacks.
07:40Look it up for me, boys.
07:41How many?
07:42Maybe it was six.
07:44I thought it was five.
07:46I don't know.
07:47Flag football, to me, is kind of odd.
07:50I don't know what happened in the 20 years since I played flag football in college to what it is
07:57now.
07:57They have rules, bro.
07:58But those dudes are elite athletes.
08:00Because, like, when I was at all this stuff with the girls, and I went to the state championship and
08:05all that, bro, you look at the flags being thrown, you're like, what the hell are they throwing a flag
08:10for there?
08:10Right.
08:11Oh, they can't do that?
08:12Like, the natural thing, when someone goes to reach, you try to hit their hand.
08:18You can't do that.
08:19You know?
08:20When you're blocking, you've got to just stand there.
08:23If they go around you, you can't lean into them.
08:26You know, you've just got to stand.
08:27They've got to run around you.
08:29If they run over you, guess what?
08:30There's probably a flag on them.
08:32So it's like, it's the weirdest thing.
08:34But if you stay around it long enough, you'll learn it.
08:38I had a thought.
08:39And maybe people, decision makers in our city will embrace this.
08:46Josh Harris talked about, he went on to talk about flag football as a league priority.
08:52And he's, I asked him that because I was kind of trying to see if the league leaned on the
08:56teams to let these guys play.
08:58Because the league's got big fish to fry, right?
09:01And he said, he said, yeah, it's a priority, but, you know, everybody made their own decisions.
09:07But he was explaining, one of the big reasons flag football is such a push for the NFL is it
09:12just broadens the game.
09:14It makes it way more inclusive.
09:15I mean, women are playing.
09:17There's going to be a new professional league.
09:20Also, like, playing football isn't for everybody.
09:23Some parents are scared.
09:24Some kids are scared.
09:26Some equipment, right?
09:27Like, buying the equipment's expensive.
09:29Like, there's all sorts of hurdles to playing tackle football as we know it.
09:33Flag football just lowers those barriers significantly.
09:36Secondly, the NHL needs to get on board with that strategy yesterday with street hockey.
09:45You know how much fun street hockey is?
09:47Everybody can play.
09:49You don't need ice.
09:50You can play it in Louisiana.
09:52And what the NFL has done with flag, the NHL should do with street hockey.
09:58Like, I did a thing at Wide World Sports, Disney, with Michelle Bison.
10:04I think that's her name.
10:05She and I hosted the flag football championship.
10:08You're talking about 100 and something teams.
10:10This is 15, 20 years ago.
10:14So, it has been there.
10:16It's just gotten huge over the last two to three years.
10:19So, the NFL, what's happening now, they put a lot of work into it.
10:25Hockey, I don't know if they've been putting any work.
10:27They haven't.
10:28They got to start.
10:29They should.
10:29And it'll take a while.
10:31Right.
10:31But, I know in D.C., because a lot of my friends' sons play in a street hockey league, it's
10:37their favorite sport.
10:38Especially for the younger kids.
10:40Like, there's lightning in a bottle there, man.
10:42You just got to press the gas.
10:44So, that's all.
