00:03Whoa!
00:03Wow!
00:04Oh, my God!
00:06Families across Australia are drowning in clutter.
00:13This is what we took out of your house.
00:16Whoa!
00:18All of them are desperate for help.
00:21Clutter is anything that gets between you
00:25and the life you want to live.
00:27Peter Walsh frees them from the stuff holding them back.
00:32Yes!
00:35While Sheree Barber renovates their homes in record time.
00:39Yay!
00:40And Angie Kent brings much-loved treasures back to life.
00:44It gives me goosebumps.
00:45Oh, that's so good!
00:49Oh, wow!
00:51It's the greatest...
00:53Oh, my God!
00:55..transformation...
00:55Oh, amazing!
00:57..of their lives.
00:59Oh, ho, ho!
01:00Oh, my God!
01:02Oh, my God!
01:02Oh, my God!
01:10Marg has been married to her high school sweetheart, Chris,
01:14for 30 years.
01:15And they live together with their daughters, Holly and Cassidy.
01:19Marg's very artistic with painting or ceramics.
01:23She's run marathons for charity,
01:25and she's a very social person.
01:27She'll go out every night of the week if she's got the chance to,
01:29which is great because she's enjoying life
01:31and making the most of every minute,
01:33and I love her for that.
01:35But it's what's going on inside the family's home
01:38that's causing conflict.
01:43With a lot of stuff everywhere,
01:45it just feels all-consuming.
01:47It's coming down on top of you,
01:48and it's frustrating.
01:50Everything you'll see, it's my mum's stuff,
01:52causes a lot of stress with everyone in the house.
01:56Yeah, it's crazy.
02:00I have obsessions, like, I collect jugs, knickknacks.
02:04There's craft supplies everywhere.
02:06I just can't let things go,
02:09and I can't let things go to waste.
02:11So I'm always thinking I should be able to repurpose it.
02:15Because she says it's her house,
02:17she thinks that it's okay to have everything out,
02:19but I don't bring people over
02:21because it's embarrassing,
02:23but she doesn't understand that.
02:26We argue over a little spoon or a mug,
02:31and I'll get upset, I'll get emotional,
02:33and then I give up because I just can't deal with it.
02:37Little arguments explode into big arguments
02:39that don't need to be an argument at all
02:41if everyone just accepted the clutter.
02:53When one person in a household stops listening
02:55to everyone else's point of view,
02:57resentment can quickly build.
02:59And for Marg, her out-of-control collecting habit
03:02and blindness to the clutter
03:04is threatening her family's future.
03:11Oh! Hey, Marg. Hey, Chris. How you doing?
03:13Hello. Hello.
03:14So we hear there might be a little bit of clutter in this house.
03:17A little bit. Just a little bit.
03:19Can we check it out?
03:20Absolutely. Please, please.
03:21Come in.
03:22Oh!
03:23Whoa, big, giant skeleton.
03:27That's Indiana bones.
03:28Indiana bones!
03:32There's so much stuff.
03:34Wow.
03:39Besides the skeleton, who lives in the house?
03:41Me, Mark.
03:42Yeah?
03:42Me, Chris, myself.
03:43And Holly.
03:44And our other daughter, Cassidy.
03:46Got it. Okay.
03:47And our stuff.
03:48Yeah.
03:49There's a lot going on.
03:51Pretty much every flat surface has something on it.
03:54I'm guessing every cupboard then is...
03:58Whoa.
03:59It's chockers.
04:00Yeah.
04:00So, uh, drawers as well?
04:02Maybe.
04:03Okay.
04:03Maybe.
04:06Are you serious?
04:08I've got six of everything.
04:11Chris, what's the feeling it creates for you?
04:14It just becomes overwhelming and it's really busy.
04:18Holly, what's your feeling about all of this?
04:20I absolutely hate it.
04:22Really?
04:23Yeah.
04:24Is there much conflict about this with you and your mum?
04:26Yes.
04:27Really?
04:28Yeah.
04:28Perhaps it's your delivery.
04:33Feel that mood change?
04:35Marg, why are we here?
04:37We're here because apparently I have too much stuff.
04:41And, um, yeah.
04:43To me...
04:45Yeah, it doesn't really bother me.
04:47Okay.
04:47I also see there's kind of a lounge dining area over here.
04:50Can we check that out?
04:51Sure.
04:51Let's go.
04:52Walk into this.
04:56Once again, there's just a ton of stuff in here.
05:01There is so, so many trinkets.
05:03But the thing that I'm most amazed at is the sheer volume of furniture.
05:07I mean, couches, an extra dining table, six cabinets.
05:12I mean, wow.
05:15It's mind-boggling.
05:18I grew up in a family of five children and a single mum.
05:24My dad passed away when I was two.
05:27So, I don't want to say poor, but it was challenging.
05:30My mum used to go to the op shop and it was like,
05:33well, that's a way of affording a bit more.
05:35And that sort of introduced me to the idea of fossicking through other people's throw-out.
05:40So, that's probably escalated the way I hold onto things.
05:46Shree, what do you think?
05:48Well, I'm thinking this is probably a 1930s bungalow house, is that right?
05:52Yes.
05:52But not this bit, right?
05:54Not this bit.
05:54Definitely that sort of half of the house looks like that's that era.
05:59I love the charm of this heritage home, but the past extension has left a chaotic mismatch of surfaces and
06:06styles, with ornate cornices clashing with exposed brick, concrete shelves and different shades of timber.
06:13So, I need to give this a massive spruce up whilst respecting its beautiful 1930s features.
06:20I'm curious, what's with this cat rung thing here?
06:23We have four cats and that is how they get up and get out into their cat pen, so they
06:30don't get squished on the road.
06:32And you want that to stay?
06:33Yes, please.
06:34Yeah.
06:35So, what else are we looking at?
06:36There's another room at the front of the house.
06:39Why don't you two check this out?
06:40Why don't you two come with me?
06:41Let's go.
06:42Come on.
06:42Let's do it.
06:43Oh, wish us luck.
06:44Good luck.
06:50Wow.
06:55Yeah, it's a lot.
06:57Yeah.
06:59This is the room of chaos.
07:04There's this whole sense of, well, if we laugh it off, we don't have to deal with it.
07:10That's probably right.
07:12But, but...
07:13Yes and no.
07:14Are you getting upset?
07:15Yeah.
07:16Oh, don't get upset.
07:17It's just stuff.
07:19But it's not just stuff.
07:21And suddenly I scratch the surface.
07:23Yeah.
07:23And this comes to the surface.
07:27Well, we have a lot of arguments over it and it gets very emotional for me.
07:30Could this stuff end your marriage?
07:34Could this stuff end your marriage?
07:36I don't know.
07:37Yeah.
07:41We've been going out since we were 15 years old.
07:44I used to ride my bike from my school to hers every lunchtime.
07:47And we love each other.
07:49And we're there for each other.
07:52But it's a battle each day.
07:54The clutter.
07:57Sorry.
07:58It's...
08:00It feels like you can't relax because it's caving in on you.
08:05And I just don't feel like that anymore.
08:09It feels like you're more invested in this than us and that's what the issue is with me.
08:14Is that how you feel?
08:15Absolutely.
08:16Okay.
08:17I can tell you right now, if you stay on this path, this will destroy this family.
08:25When you step into this house, what do you want to feel?
08:29I want to feel love, comfort, enjoyment and family.
08:33Okay.
08:33What do you want to feel when you step into this house?
08:37Serenity.
08:38Okay.
08:38Then, as we're working together, when you look at any item, you have to ask,
08:44will it give me love, comfort, serenity, family?
08:50Okay.
08:51Okay.
08:52Let's go.
08:52Grab anything you want.
08:53Let's go, guys.
08:59To deal with the clutter that's become a huge source of conflict within the family.
09:04Thousands of belongings are boxed up and removed from the home.
09:10I think in the next few days, it's going to be a rollercoaster.
09:13Marg's sort of thinking as a singular person, not how it affected everyone else.
09:18I'm feeling like me and my dad have the same views versus her, so it could be a bit of
09:24trouble there.
09:30Coming up, as the Renault team uncover a nasty surprise.
09:34That is really rotten.
09:36Facing the clutter triggers laughter from Marg, but brings Holly and Chris to the brink.
09:47Can we get a box for games?
09:49Box for games?
09:51Peter's helping Marg clear out her cluttered home, after her love of op shopping spun out of control, and is
09:58now threatening to tear her family apart.
10:04It's really important that when you're packing up as many things as we are today, keep like items together, okay?
10:10All the glasses together.
10:11We'll get it in the truck.
10:12I'll grab some more stuff.
10:21In the front room, Angie uncovers a hidden gem that was buried under the mess.
10:28Mug.
10:28Oh, my gosh.
10:30Look at this.
10:31Isn't she beautiful?
10:32Oh, my God.
10:32I love her.
10:35Chris bought me this for my 21st birthday.
10:39I actually don't know where he bought it from because it was a surprise.
10:42How long do you reckon it's been in here?
10:45It'd be 20 plus years.
10:47I don't think my children have actually had the pleasure of seeing this.
10:51Ever see?
10:51Okay.
10:52Yeah.
10:53While Marg doesn't know the origin of this gorgeous art deco treasure and thinks it no longer works, I reckon
10:59it could be a pretty rare find.
11:01So I want to get it valued by an expert I know and see if we can get it working
11:05again.
11:10With the last room emptied of possessions, everything's transported in loaded up vans and trucks to a nearby warehouse, where
11:20it's all unpacked and laid out into categories so the huge task of decluttering can begin.
11:27The amount of stuff we're dealing with is enormous, and by her own admission, it pretty much all belongs to
11:33Marg.
11:34And while she laughs it off, it's clear her family are at breaking point, with her marriage to Chris on
11:40the line.
11:40So to bring harmony back into their lives, I need Marg to face up to the difficult challenge ahead.
11:47On the count of three, I want you to open your eyes and have a look at the clutter that
11:52came out of your home.
11:55One, two, three, open your eyes.
12:01Oh my god.
12:07That's a lot.
12:10My heart's racing.
12:11Really?
12:13To see it in one space is just...
12:16It's a lot.
12:17It's a lot.
12:20Let me show you what's here, okay?
12:22Here we go.
12:24In front of you are tables and boxes of glassware, kitchenware, platters, plates.
12:32I didn't think we had that much glassware.
12:34There's crafting supplies.
12:36A tonne of furniture.
12:37We have seven racks and five tables of clothes, bags and hats.
12:45That's cheapest.
12:46And here, more than 200 pairs of shoes.
12:51Oh, no.
12:55And that's not all.
12:56Over here on the wall of wonder, we have more than 180 candles.
13:02I knew it.
13:04Almost 70 vases.
13:07Oh, no.
13:08And here, right in front of you, we have 75 jugs.
13:13That's crazy.
13:17This took 350 bins, boxes, bags and totes to get from your house to here in the hall.
13:30This is overwhelming.
13:32Yeah.
13:32It's too much.
13:33It's absolutely too much.
13:36I'm thinking I must find comfort in stuff.
13:39That's a great insight straight away.
13:41Yeah.
13:41Can you help us understand that a little bit?
13:44I'm not really sure.
13:44I think I get a momentary buzz when I find something I like.
13:48Yeah.
13:48And then I bring it home.
13:50And then I see another one that I like.
13:52And another.
13:53And another.
13:54And it's not till they're like that.
13:55I can see, yeah, there's probably maybe one to me.
14:00Even in the house, it looked, you know, everything was piled on each other.
14:04And I find it crazy how you thought that was normal.
14:07I think for you, Mark, we need to reframe what is normal.
14:11Yeah.
14:13To move back into the house that you want, at least 70% of this has to go.
14:20Okay.
14:21Let's get started.
14:21Come with me.
14:22Let's go.
14:23Come on.
14:25Decluttering is one part of the process.
14:28The other is back at the house, where Sheree and her team are getting started on the ambitious
14:34two-day renovation to transform the kitchen, dining room, living room and front room
14:41into functional spaces for the whole family.
14:45First up, Sheree's tackling the kitchen's mismatched surfaces.
14:51While we're protecting the timber floors, which are in great condition, I need to unify
14:55the kitchen's inconsistent style.
14:57The pantry door had been covered with a chalkboard and the cupboard next to it had
15:02a daggy pattern fabric.
15:05But by ripping them off, we've uncovered these gorgeous art deco-style windows that really
15:11complement the home's heritage features.
15:15But not everything in the kitchen has aged well, with the removal of the old sink exposing
15:21a problem with the timber bench top.
15:25God, that is really rotten.
15:27It's definitely been leaking.
15:28Yeah, so if we can rip that out and replace it with a new one.
15:31Yep.
15:32The biggest issue is, you have to get that out without smashing those tiles, because I'm
15:37using those as my colour inspiration for the whole property.
15:40Yeah.
15:41Um, we will...
15:42Try your best.
15:43Try our best to make sure we don't do any damage whatsoever.
15:46Alright, if those tiles crack...
15:49I'm running.
15:54Keep that.
15:55That can go.
15:56Good, good, good.
15:58Marg, Chris and Holly are now sorting through the clutter that was jamming up the front room
16:03of their home.
16:05This is like breaking apart.
16:07Keep.
16:08Get rid of that.
16:09Just be quiet and keep moving.
16:11Why are you telling me to be quiet?
16:12You're making me upset.
16:13Yeah.
16:14Things have already gotten off to a rocky start, with Marg clearly used to getting her own
16:19way.
16:20Keep the record.
16:21And keep that.
16:22Why?
16:22It's for my embroidery.
16:24When do you embroider?
16:25Stop it.
16:26I do.
16:27As soon as anyone dares question why she's keeping stuff, Marg's defences come straight
16:32up.
16:33Sewing machine.
16:34Yes, needed.
16:36But to be honest, I've never seen you when I've had stuff to fix, you brought that out,
16:40I've done that and used that.
16:45All right, donate it.
16:46But it just means I'll have to buy a new one.
16:50Okay, so having a sewing machine and sewing is a great idea.
16:54Yeah.
16:55But the thing is, you're never going to use this.
17:00Okay.
17:01And I can tell this is the argument you guys get into all the time.
17:05It no longer becomes about the sewing.
17:07It becomes about who's going to win and who's going to lose.
17:12Yeah, agree.
17:13Yeah.
17:13You win usually, don't you?
17:15Yeah.
17:15And the losers end up walking on eggshells, getting angry and feeling resentment.
17:21It's exactly what I never thought about like that.
17:24Yeah, same.
17:25Just losing and just giving up and saying, well, couldn't we bother?
17:28Yeah, and then he'll walk off.
17:29Yeah.
17:29And we walk away and we become blind to it again.
17:31But then the resentment builds.
17:32Look at the two of them right now.
17:37Yep.
17:38Okay.
17:39All right.
17:40Got it.
17:40It's not about the stuff.
17:42Okay.
17:43Is this staying or going?
17:44No, it can go.
17:45Great.
17:45Okay, good.
17:46Good, good.
17:47Let's move down here.
17:48Go.
17:48That can go.
17:50What about these?
17:52They can go, obviously.
17:53They can.
17:54This is...
17:55Can go.
17:56Okay.
17:57Mark is now making some progress, but we've barely scratched the surface of the clutter
18:02or her family's resentment.
18:04I need more convincing before I can believe she's made meaningful change.
18:10There's one, two, three, four, a dozen boxes off to donation.
18:15More to do.
18:16Let's go.
18:16Come with me.
18:17Let's just start.
18:17Uh-uh.
18:19Coming up, as the Renault pushes forward...
18:22I don't need any of this.
18:23...Chris pushes back.
18:25Don't look at me like that.
18:26I'm just telling you what I feel.
18:31At Chris and Marg's house, it's time to see if the old kitchen bench top
18:36will come out without damaging the splash back tiles.
18:40Uh, bench top's loose.
18:43Oh, it's popped out.
18:44No tile broken.
18:46Thank goodness, as buying new tiles would have never matched the originals.
18:50But, of course, my troubles don't stop there.
18:53There was an old telephone plate.
18:55Yep.
18:56I asked the electricians to terminate them, but we've now got big whopping holes.
19:00Yeah, big holes.
19:01So, I found one white and one yellow tile in the garage.
19:07Oh.
19:07Would you believe it?
19:07We need to try and get them out without smashing all those other tiles.
19:11Oh.
19:12It's gonna be tricky.
19:14Let's give it a crack.
19:16No, we're not gonna give it a crack.
19:17Nice.
19:24Meanwhile, the team begin transforming the far end of the kitchen.
19:29This area was a dumping ground for Marg's clutter, with impractical storage stacked one in front of the other.
19:35So, we're installing new overhead cupboards and low shelving to provide modern accessible storage.
19:42While adding new bench tops, we'll turn this into the ultimate art and craft zone for Marg to express her
19:48creativity.
19:50Oh, Cherie.
19:52Yeah.
19:52The tile's out.
19:53Oh, my God.
19:54Good man.
19:54All right.
19:55We got him out.
19:56With the second damaged tile also removed, and the spares fitted into place, new bench tops can be installed, a
20:05new sink plumbed in, and the cabinet doors painted.
20:09But to tackle the chaos that was hiding behind them, Cherie has called in an expert.
20:15I've put the first coat of paint on the kitchen cabinets.
20:17Fantastic.
20:18But what I would love you to do is to fix the internals, make them more space efficient.
20:22Okay.
20:23All right.
20:23I'll leave it with you.
20:26Clear containers to see contents, and integrated storage to maximize cupboard space.
20:32Should make sure the family never has trouble finding things again.
20:36Okay, great.
20:42Stay or go?
20:43Stay.
20:45Their table waits, no?
20:46No, we don't need to go.
20:47Good.
20:48Marg and Chris are now trying to reduce the excess Christmas decorations that were buried in their cluttered front room.
20:55That's a costume.
20:56Can I keep that?
20:57We don't need.
20:57We're not going to wear wings or anything.
20:59Can I keep Joy?
21:00Don't.
21:01Don't need it.
21:02I don't, I don't need it.
21:03I don't need any of this.
21:04Okay, I'm letting them go to make space in my house.
21:07No, but hey, but it's not your house.
21:10Okay.
21:11It's not.
21:11Listen, don't say okay.
21:13No, no, no, I understand.
21:13It's not your house.
21:15Yeah, it's our house.
21:16House.
21:16Yep.
21:17Marg's desire to always be the winner in her household means letting anything go needs to be on her terms.
21:24Look handle.
21:25We've got 5,000 of those.
21:26So we've got a hundred, hundreds of things to go through.
21:29Attacking stuff.
21:30We don't need that.
21:31I'm not, I'm not going to stop.
21:32I'm just explaining to you.
21:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:33I need you to listen, please.
21:35But it seems that after years of Chris holding in his feelings, they're now spilling out and he's going to
21:42the other extreme.
21:43How far and birds.
21:45We're not going to hang them up anywhere.
21:47Sorry, don't look at me like that.
21:48I'm just telling you what I feel.
21:49It's your delivery again.
21:51It's everything is no, no, no, no, no.
21:52Take a pause.
21:55So far, Chris, all of this is going.
21:58Yep.
21:59Three bins are being kept.
22:01Okay.
22:02So progress is being made.
22:03Good.
22:04It's a pendulum.
22:05And you guys are finding new ground.
22:09Okay?
22:10Do you love this woman?
22:11Absolutely.
22:12Do you love this man?
22:13Mostly.
22:13Okay.
22:15Do you see?
22:16You did it again.
22:17No, no.
22:17Yes, I do love him.
22:19Okay, you've got it.
22:19I don't want to joke.
22:20He's got to ease up a little bit.
22:21Okay.
22:22I will.
22:23Okay.
22:24You can cut the tension between these two with a knife.
22:28This is my recycling prediction of reusing everything that can go.
22:34It's going to take time for the balance in this 30-year marriage to even out.
22:39But I feel they've already gained some common ground.
22:43Are you going?
22:43Good.
22:44Well done, Mark.
22:45Great job.
22:45Good job.
22:47We started with these tables completely covered.
22:51You are now keeping four bins for yourself and nine bins going off to donation.
22:58Good work.
22:58Well done.
22:59Yeah.
22:59Well done.
23:00We've got lots more to do.
23:02Deep breath.
23:03Good job.
23:04You ready to keep going?
23:05Yep.
23:05Let's roll.
23:06Good job.
23:09Back at the house, gold striped wallpaper is being put up in the dining room to complement
23:14the kitchen splash back.
23:16The mismatched, oversized cabinets and tiny table made for a poor dining experience.
23:22So we're luxing up this space with modern cabinets that'll form a feature wall.
23:27Elegant lighting above new artwork and a larger table that I've ordered.
23:33Next, Cherie shifts her attention to the once dark and crowded living room, starting with
23:39the TV nook.
23:41This built in unit was visually messy, with the TV crammed in the middle, surrounded by
23:46cabinetry and clutter.
23:49So we're simplifying it by pulling out the drawers and side shelves.
23:53And I've also come up with a neat solution to replace the ugly tower the family's cats climbed
23:59up to reach the flap at the top of the window that leads to their outdoor enclosure.
24:04So we put a rung maybe here, and then here, here, and they get out the window.
24:10Yeah, paint them up.
24:12I think it'll come up nice.
24:14As the cat steps are being built, the timber trims throughout the open plan living, dining
24:21and kitchen are painted a crisp white, along with the ornate cornices and exposed brickwork
24:27to tie everything together.
24:30We're also using the same wallpaper behind the TV as we did in the dining room.
24:35This will dictate what colour paint I use on the walls.
24:38So what I want to do is I want to get the wall paint that tonally matches with the gold
24:43stripe.
24:43Now I've identified that colour is Taubman's New Buck.
24:56Coming up, Angie discovers the origin of Marg's treasure.
25:01This model is quite rare.
25:02Wow.
25:03While at the sort, family tempers flare.
25:06You don't wear those.
25:07Yeah, I do.
25:08I've never seen you wear them.
25:14There's over 800 items of clothing here.
25:18That's wild.
25:20Yeah, it's wild.
25:20That's like a whole shop.
25:21Back at the warehouse, Marg's youngest daughter Cassidy has arrived to help sort through her
25:27mum's mountain of clothes.
25:28Go.
25:29Go.
25:30Go.
25:31Go.
25:32Should I go through the next one?
25:34How can you go through my clothes, Cass?
25:35Okay, sorry.
25:36The sheer volume of clothes Marg has amassed through a lifetime of op shop bargain hunting
25:41is staggering.
25:43And while she's resisted help from her family so far, I'm hoping her daughter's honest opinions
25:48will get through their mum's defences.
25:51See, these to me, mum, are all similar.
25:54They all look the same.
25:54They all look similar.
25:55You don't need all of them.
25:56Please try and get rid of some of them.
25:57Shh.
25:57No, no.
25:58Why don't tell her to shush.
25:59Just be quiet, okay?
26:00Yeah.
26:01Things are already a little tense, but while clothes can be personal, this is Marg's chance
26:07to see her family as part of the solution, not the problem.
26:12Mum?
26:13You don't wear those.
26:14Yeah, I do care.
26:15I've never seen you wear them and there's a stain on them.
26:18Let me ask you a question.
26:19Do you feel ganged up on?
26:22A little bit.
26:23Okay, then let's talk about it.
26:25Because for you, this is security.
26:27Yeah, it is, I think.
26:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:29Not for me.
26:30No, definitely not.
26:31See, and for them, it's frustration and anger.
26:35Half of this, I never see her wear at all.
26:37But I have worn it and I will wear it, so you've got to let me say, no, I do
26:41wear that.
26:42You say, I've worn it.
26:45What I actually hear is, I want to keep it.
26:49Okay.
26:49It's fair that if you want to keep it, that's your decision.
26:54However, they just don't want you living in this anymore.
27:00You always say you lose clothes and then look, it's all here.
27:03You know, I have a big saying that if you can't find it, you don't own it.
27:07That's the bottom line.
27:08Yeah, I understand.
27:09So all of this discussion comes from a place of love.
27:13Let's go.
27:13You're doing an incredibly good job.
27:15What about this?
27:16Is this to go?
27:17That's the key.
27:18These can go.
27:19Good.
27:20I wear these though.
27:21Okay.
27:21It feels much more collaborative.
27:23Good.
27:24Marg's finally letting go of more things.
27:27I don't wear it.
27:27And little by little.
27:29Yeah, that can go.
27:30I can see her walls coming down too.
27:33We're down to two racks, one table you're keeping and 23 boxes.
27:42Wow.
27:43Of clothes going off to donation.
27:45We've got lots more to go through.
27:47Come with me.
27:47Let's go.
27:50Across town, Angie's track down hi-fi specialist Philip to see if the vintage radio she found
27:56amongst Marg's clutter can be revived.
28:00She probably hasn't used it in about 20 years.
28:04It may turn on briefly, but it will be well in need of having the amplifier rebuilt.
28:10So what year was this made?
28:121937, made in Australia.
28:15Okay.
28:15What we would call a low buoy, so not a mantle radio, but floor standing.
28:19Mm-hmm.
28:20I would say this particular model is quite rare.
28:22Wow.
28:23This would have been before television.
28:25Yeah.
28:26Everyone would have been sitting around this listening to radio serials.
28:30Second World War, they would have all been listening to the news.
28:32Of course.
28:32Absolutely central to the family being informed and entertained.
28:38How much was this worth back in its prime of life?
28:41Around 30 pounds.
28:44Okay.
28:44And what about now?
28:46In this condition unrestored, $250.
28:50Okay.
28:51The most interesting thing to do with this is to turn it into the world's most beautiful
28:55Bluetooth speaker.
28:56Oh, that is perfect.
28:59Restoring and modernizing this gem to stream music through the speaker won't spoil the
29:03beautiful Art Deco exterior.
29:05And while Chris and Marg can listen to the radio again, Holly and Cassidy can enjoy their
29:10own music too.
29:11It'll be a great surprise for the whole family.
29:14Alright, so I'm going to leave this with you.
29:16Glad you know how we go.
29:21Mum, these are really small.
29:23And they're different.
29:23No, no.
29:24They go with the bowls and set.
29:25Trust me.
29:26I'm being really good, Holly.
29:27Hang on.
29:28Wait.
29:29Let's stop for a sec.
29:30At the warehouse, Mark has managed to reduce her huge china collection, but is hesitating
29:36about the last few items that were bought when Holly was little, but never used.
29:41You want to keep these.
29:43They're cute.
29:44Yeah.
29:44Agreed.
29:45But how will they be used?
29:47Are they important to you?
29:48No, that's why I brought it up.
29:49So are you keeping these for her or for you?
29:51I was keeping them for me, for her, but she doesn't want them.
29:55If Mark is ever going to truly break her collecting habit, she needs to stop holding
30:00onto items she's never used.
30:02Family harmony is way more important, so it's time to let it go.
30:07What are these?
30:09These are just bowls.
30:11Bowls.
30:12Say it.
30:12What are they?
30:13Just bowls.
30:13Just bowls.
30:14Take one.
30:14Here.
30:15On the concrete.
30:16Oh no.
30:17Okay.
30:18Do it.
30:19Do it.
30:20Okay.
30:20What are they?
30:21Just bowls.
30:22Just bowls.
30:23Just bowls.
30:27Smashing china may seem extreme, but it's just the circuit breaker Mark needs before
30:33embarking on her biggest challenge yet.
30:36Over 300 jugs, vases and candles.
30:40Keep the rabbit that we had all the coffee pods in.
30:43Good.
30:44Out of this, do you want to choose a nice set?
30:46I like the squares.
30:47You can keep colouring.
30:48Which one?
30:48I like the squares.
30:49Keep that.
30:50Nice job.
30:51Do you want to keep?
30:52Yeah, yeah.
30:53Good.
30:53Keep that.
30:54That's about your mum.
30:55From there.
30:56At last, these guys are working together.
31:00Picking things to go back into their house.
31:02And it's great to see Mark has stopped laughing off her family's concerns and is seeing things
31:08from their perspective.
31:09Which one Holly?
31:10Which one?
31:11Help me.
31:11I think you've got a lot of the big ones.
31:13I like the red.
31:13I like the red things.
31:14Yeah, the tighter actually.
31:15Yeah, yeah.
31:17It's a group pick as well.
31:18Okay.
31:18Well done.
31:20Look at this.
31:22This is a table of treasures.
31:26There's lots of beautiful things in the world.
31:29Yes, and I can't have them all.
31:30Yeah.
31:31Chris, what are you thinking?
31:33Normally I don't like any of this stuff and I really like what she's picked.
31:37Holly, what are you thinking?
31:38I am so happy that we didn't argue at all during that.
31:42It's collaborative, which means they're committed to these rather than annoyed or overwhelmed
31:49every time they see these.
31:50I'm so happy seeing it at home.
31:51Yes.
31:52What?
31:53Yes.
31:54Are you going to go that far?
31:56Yeah.
31:57Absolutely.
31:57Let's go.
31:58More to do.
32:03At the renovation, rubbish is being cleared from the backyard.
32:10While inside, there's still so much left to do.
32:15With everyone racing to meet the looming deadline.
32:19But the most pressing job is to overhaul the front room, which had been overrun with so much clutter it
32:26was unusable.
32:27I want to transform this space into a sitting room Chris and Mark's daughters can relax in and have all
32:33to themselves.
32:35So, to give it a fresh feel, I bought these lime green cabinets that will really pop against the lemon
32:40wallpaper we're putting up at one end of the room.
32:42And we're painting the other walls the same shade of gold as the rest of the house.
32:49This room also has some old doors that are no longer being used as they connect to a bedroom that
32:54has a second entrance.
32:55So, we're covering them up with curtains.
32:58And while a matching set are being added to the front windows, I'm hitting the shops to choose new rugs
33:04to make all the rooms feel warm and comfy underfoot.
33:09Ooh, that one will be perfect.
33:19Coming up, the family are stunned by the clutter's incredible value.
33:25That's a lot.
33:30The soul just, yeah, they can go.
33:34After a turbulent journey.
33:35I'm trying to be a new person.
33:38They can go.
33:39Marg is clearing the last of her clutter.
33:41Good. You're going well. Keep it up.
33:44With everyone more relaxed and having a bit of fun.
33:47If it's through the hoop, you get to keep the shoes.
33:50Yeah.
33:51Yay!
33:51Even deciding the fate of their biggest possession, a giant, horribly ugly skeleton, is now proving easier.
33:59Is there a desire to keep this?
34:01Definitely not.
34:02Done.
34:03Better help me realise it's just not me in the house.
34:06I always think, I like that, I'll get that.
34:08Whereas now I might reflect and think that someone else might not like that.
34:12Or check if it's something I'm buying because I aspire to use it, when am I going to use it?
34:20Finally, it's time to see if Marg has culled enough to reach her 70% goal.
34:25One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:29One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:31One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:32One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:34One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:34One, two, three, open your eyes.
34:35Oh, wow.
34:35Wow.
34:36That is good.
34:37That's unbelievable.
34:39You started with 350 boxes.
34:43You're looking at 85 boxes, which is a reduction of 76%.
34:50I mean, seriously.
34:54I'm really proud of my mum because I know that was very hard but a rewarding outcome.
35:01It's just a fresh new start and I'm very excited to see what awaits.
35:08Our house is just going to feel a lot lighter.
35:11We're going to enjoy it more and we're just going to feel happy and joyous together.
35:16This isn't the only surprise.
35:18Oh, you are so right.
35:19I want you to see what we are looking at behind you, which is your donate pile.
35:23One, two, three.
35:26Take a look.
35:26Check it out.
35:31Oh my god.
35:36Goodbye.
35:37Yeah.
35:39Goodbye.
35:40I won't miss you.
35:42That's a lot of stuff.
35:44We're looking at hundreds of clothes.
35:46All those little trinkets and ornaments.
35:51You are very kindly donating that on and it will be the cash equivalent of...
35:57Get ready.
35:5827,000 dollars.
36:02Which is very generous.
36:04Well done.
36:05That's a lot.
36:06That's amazing.
36:08Well done.
36:09The donation amount.
36:11I love it.
36:11That is music to my ears.
36:13It just feels...
36:15Like it weights off my shoulders.
36:17Moving forward with the family, it's going to bring us together.
36:24The items suitable for donation are taken to a local charity shop.
36:29While the things being kept go back into the house.
36:32Where Angie and Peter find the best spots for them.
36:36As the new rugs and furniture Sheree ordered arrive at the last minute, styling items are put into place.
36:44I've brought in some...
36:46Oh that's nice.
36:47Green.
36:48I love the texture.
36:49And also this sort of neutral one.
36:51Awesome.
36:51Well they look amazing against the lounge.
36:53Brilliant.
37:01This place has really come together.
37:03Instead of a mishmash of styles, all the rooms now flow into each other.
37:08With a consistent, yet eye-catching colour scheme.
37:11That I really hope the family will love as much as I do.
37:17Next.
37:18Oh my god!
37:20The family are blown away by their transformed home.
37:24It's funny!
37:31Chris, Marg, Cassidy and Holly are about to see their renovated home.
37:37I'm so excited to go inside and see our new house and our new beginnings together.
37:41It's been a bit of a roller coaster and we've done a lot of learning.
37:45And it's been great to reconnect with my wife.
37:48I'm very nervous but very excited to see what's been done in the house.
37:55Marg, Chris, Holly, Cass.
37:57Remember when we first came into this space?
37:59It was such a hodgepodge of furniture.
38:02And let's just say there was a lot of clutter in this space.
38:06On the count of three, I want you to open your eyes and check out your brand new living room.
38:12One, two, three, open your eyes.
38:16Oh my god!
38:19Oh my god!
38:20Oh my god!
38:27Oh my god!
38:29It's stunning!
38:31Oh my god!
38:33The once crowded, dark and drab living room...
38:39is now an open, relaxing space.
38:42Brought to life with Cherie's striking gold colour scheme.
38:48That's fabulous.
38:51It's not embarrassing anymore.
38:55So what we did first of all is we reimagined just this whole TV look area.
39:00It was so cluttered before, you didn't know where to look so we simplified it.
39:05You'll notice that you've got new furniture.
39:07So nice.
39:08We've completely painted throughout, so it all feels cohesive in the space.
39:14We took out all the halogens, we've now got these beautiful dimmable LED lights.
39:19You've got these beautiful curtains that provide privacy but they let light through.
39:24That's just stunning.
39:26But there's one other little surprise.
39:28Remember that big ugly cat tower that you have?
39:32Got rid of that and built you a new cat run.
39:35New steps.
39:36So they hop up, up, up, up, poke their head up and out.
39:40Out the door.
39:41It's got anti-slip matting on it so they won't fall off.
39:45I love that.
39:46I think you're a miracle worker.
39:48What do we think of the beautiful dining room?
39:50That's amazing.
39:52That is crazy.
39:54The dining room was a chaotic clutter of cabinets and trinkets, with the family crammed around a small table at
40:01meal times.
40:06It's incredible.
40:08I love it.
40:09Oh, it's so beautiful.
40:16It's now been given a stylish makeover, with room for everyone to enjoy meals together.
40:24So I actually got you an oversized dining table.
40:27It very comfortably fits six people.
40:30It's amazing.
40:32You had a lot of stuff before, and I know you've got less stuff now, but storage is still important.
40:38So you can see that we've got double bookcases through there.
40:41We've got the underbench storage, and we've got the beautiful artwork.
40:46It's just amazing.
40:48It's just perfect.
40:50It's beyond our vision.
40:51It's perfect.
40:51It's something that I could never even imagine.
40:58Before this, I felt like it was a nightmare.
41:00Now a dream has come true, you know?
41:03Oh, it's not.
41:03It's, like, amazing.
41:05That's high praise.
41:06Yeah.
41:06Cass.
41:07I can finally have friends over now, not feeling embarrassed.
41:10That's lovely.
41:11Want to check out the kitchen?
41:12Definitely.
41:14Let's have a look.
41:16No way.
41:19The kitchen's bench top was rotting, and the mismatched surfaces were an eyesore, while the cupboards and drawers were bursting
41:27with clutter.
41:32Oh, my gosh.
41:33Oh, my gosh.
41:35Where am I?
41:37Whoa.
41:37Is this our house?
41:44It's now a fresh, harmonious, and organised space, where meal prep can be stress-free.
41:52Colour's beautiful.
41:55I wanted to make the whole space feel cohesive, because sometimes less is more.
42:00I worked with the yellow tiles.
42:01They were my colour inspiration for the whole property.
42:04Myself, the Grey Army, and the Grey Care team continued the colour all the way through.
42:09We've installed a new bench top, new sink, new sink tap.
42:12We've installed new lighting.
42:15You'll notice that the chalkboard is gone from the doors, which rebuilds some beautiful glass windows behind those.
42:21So you've got a brand new chalkboard over there.
42:23Amazing.
42:25And it's not just what you see on the outside.
42:29It's also...
42:30Oh!
42:32You can see the back of the cupboard.
42:34And all of these drawers were completely chockers, so we've simplified, and you've got these drawer organisers.
42:41Are we?
42:42Wow.
42:43And because the pantry was on the other side, why not bring the things used most often in close?
42:49That's amazing.
42:51I love it.
42:52That's sensational.
42:53That's amazing.
42:54Yeah.
42:56One of the big things here also was about your creativity.
43:00Take a few steps this way, we've got something else to show you.
43:04Marg's excess op shop finds and an imposing Halloween decoration had taken over the far end of the kitchen.
43:15It's now been turned into a dedicated art space for Marg to get creative with her painting and embroidery.
43:22I love it.
43:23This space we always found hard.
43:25A lot of room to grow here as well.
43:27It's just incredible.
43:28Okay.
43:32The front room was so jam-packed with stuff, you could barely step foot in the door.
43:40Oh!
43:41Oh!
43:44That's insane.
43:45This is crazy.
43:51Wow.
43:52It's so nice.
43:54Oh my God, the wallpaper.
43:55Yeah, I love it.
44:02Cherise transformed it into a calming retreat to suit Holly and Cassidy, while still respecting the home's Art Deco heritage.
44:10It's beautiful.
44:12Wow.
44:13Will you hang out here, not in your room?
44:14Yeah.
44:15Oh my Lord.
44:17I love it.
44:18Love it.
44:19It's really good.
44:21So, I wanted to make it fun.
44:23So, first of all, I saw this beautiful wallpaper.
44:27Got the beautiful window furnishings here.
44:30The old doorway that was there actually created a window curtain wall.
44:34So, at any time you can just pull that across if you ever want to change this room in the
44:38future.
44:39This is so nice.
44:40Oh, wow.
44:41Wow.
44:42And Marg.
44:44Huh?
44:44Look what's back!
44:46Wow!
44:46My baby!
44:47After discovering the vintage radio buried under clutter, Angie had the aging amplifier rebuilt
44:53and added a modern twist, so Marg's whole family can enjoy it.
44:58Look at what it can do now.
45:00You can just whip out your phone and...
45:06What?
45:07Oh, help.
45:09I love that.
45:09Party time!
45:10Really cool.
45:12Wow.
45:12Wow.
45:13So, now you can connect your phone through the Bluetooth, push a button, it comes through.
45:18You can still listen to your AM though too, so don't you worry about that.
45:22It gets a second chance at life in this new space and the girls can have a little party
45:26if you want to.
45:27Awesome.
45:28It's incredible.
45:31I can't believe it and I can't stop smiling.
45:34It feels like a dream come true.
45:37Just opened the eyes and I thought, I'm in the wrong place, but it's just amazing.
45:43It feels like a home now.
45:45I didn't know I could have a house that looked this beautiful.
45:49I don't need stuff.
45:50I just need my family.
45:55Marg's clutter blindness strained her marriage and caused deep resentment in the household.
46:01But her willingness to change and embrace other views has not only helped create a beautiful,
46:07relaxing home for the whole family, it's brought them closer together than ever before.
46:22How she sang Responsi Tiger, she died a given week?
46:26How does she heal with her ceremony when Angelaordu revolving?
46:26Was just looking at the hopes and more for them to bring it up in their jobs like she was
46:27good.
46:27It's been to the house and my family was similar.
46:27You've found this size and the whole family have been stripped of.
46:27So you've got a free video.
46:27You
